Want to know about Festivals - This is the book!!Review Date: 2008-03-02
Excellent, Unique, AuthenticReview Date: 2006-12-31
My wife recently got this book (with the other book by the same author.. do not buy the more expensive and outdated hardcover editions) and finds it to be very helpful. The cooking (and I am one of the prime beneficiaries) had improved perceptibly and has a lot of added variety. The author is very approachable by email, clarifies doubts (e.g., "cup" is equivalent to American teacup, types of onions, tomatoes to use) and offers suggestions for new recipes. It doesnt get better than that.
My wife also *highly* recommends the book on South Indian Veg Cuisine by the same author.
Ahh...nothing like good south Indian food...machan!Review Date: 2006-08-15

This book: An Unplugged Version of FinancesReview Date: 2008-08-05
This author really knows how to transform the most complex subject into a pleasurable walk in the park. This book is a perfect complement for your "academic" textbook. When the "academic" textbook fails to clear out the jargon, this book disentangles the mess made up by the "academic tone". If you are studying a BBA or an MBA in Finances this book fits perfectly beside the large and boring class "tome". With this book you will really learn about finances. Sorry Profs...
One of the most comprehensive books out there.Review Date: 2008-06-27
To my surprise the book was amazingly concise, coherent and well structured. Mr. Estrada accomplished a difficult task in managing to write a well-balanced book which unites major theories in finance and its application (with emphasis on the latter). In fact, the author goes the extra mile in explaining how different point of views of a single model leads to different results. (i.e. CAPM and how investors approach it).
The book is divided into 4 parts.
Part 1: Risk and Return - ( 12 chapters ). Subjects covered include: Risk Adjusted, Diversification, Portfolios, Systematic risk, CAPM, Optimal portfolios.
Part 2 Valuation - ( 8 Chapters ). Subjects covered include: WACC, Reverse valuation, Market risk and Default risk, Duration and Convexity.
Part 3 Other Important Topics - ( 6 Chapters ). Subjects covered include: Real Options, Currencies, Options, Futures and Forwards, NPV, IRR.
Part 4 Statistical Background.- (4 Chapters ). Subjects covered include: Normality, Non-Normality, Regression analysis.
Pros:
*Short and independent chapters
*The consistent level of discussion. (leaning towards practicality rather than academic)
*The Problems section
*The Humorous style of Mr. Estrada which cracked the intensity of some chapters (two thumbs up for that)
Cons:
*Some tables and models are referenced in other chapters which requires flipping back and forth between chapters. And sometimes you end up reading the whole chapter, however I think this is a small price to pay for self-contained chapters.
*Part 3 which covers the futures and options could have been expanded a bit.
*The excel sheet (solution for the challenge problems at the end of each chapter) do not contain the formulas, only the numbers. Which misses the whole point of excel (it's all about formulas!) However if you followed the book you shouldn't face any problems it would just be a bit time-consuming.
Overall it's a great book with excellent presentation. nonetheless, it IS a nutshell which plainly means it does not cover topics as same as a book with 800 pages dedicated for a single subject.
I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject from professional to students.
A terrific handbook to have on your shelf for a quick refresher or as supplementary readingReview Date: 2006-05-15
Another group that will benefit greatly from a handbook like this are people whose job is focused in an area that uses a narrow portion of the subject matter, but occasionally need or want to refresh themselves in matters not part of their everyday work. Picking this book off the shelf and reading a few pages on the relevant topic will put you right back in the swing of things.
The book has thirty clearly focused chapters that are broadly organized into four parts: Risk and Return, Valuation, Other Important Topics (such as NPV, IRR, Real Options, Corporations and Value Creation, Options, Futures and Forwards, and Currencies), and Statistical Background. Another really nice feature of the book is that, where relevant, the author includes material to help you implement the chapter material in Excel. Using spreadsheets is the way to go in finance, and this material is most useful. However, it is basic information and there are other books to help you with advanced topics and Excel. There are also a few problems provided in each chapter for you to work through and develop more intuition on the subject matter.
The author writes clearly, has chosen good intuitive symbols for the equations, and is clear where there are differences of opinion, problems with certain models, and cautions the reader on certain aspects of investment (such as currencies). Yes, this is NOT a substitute for more in depth reading on these topics, but it is a wonderful handbook and great for a quick refresher.
I am quite happy to have this on my finance shelf.

What is your FIQ? And how about your organization's?Review Date: 2008-10-24
Several years ago, I read and reviewed Finance for Managers, one of the volumes in the Harvard Business Essentials series. The material provided in it is drawn from a variety of sources which include William J. Bruns, Jr., Michael J. Roberts, and Robert S. Kaplan as well as Harvard Business School Publishing and Harvard ManageMentor®, an online service. Samuel L. Hayes served as subject advisor to Richard Luecke, author of this and other books in the Harvard Business School Essentials Series as well as more than 30 other books in the series as well as several dozen articles. What we have in Financial Intelligence for Entrepreneurs, co-authored by Karen Berman and Joe Knight with John Case (also author of Open-Book Management and The Open-Book Experience), are information and advice that respond directly to the needs of those who are planning to launch a new company or have only recently done so. I think the material will also be of substantial benefit to decision-makers in companies that seek to become more entrepreneurial.
At a GE annual meeting, then CEO Jack Welch explained why he thought so highly of "small, sleek" business operations: "For one, they communicate better. Without the din and prattle of bureaucracy, people listen as well as talk; and since there are fewer of them they generally know and understand each other. Second, small companies move faster. They know the penalties for hesitation in the marketplace. Third, in small companies, with fewer layers and less camouflage, the leaders show up very clearly on the screen. Their performance and its impact are clear to everyone. And, finally, smaller companies waste less. They spend less time in endless reviews and approvals and politics and paper drills. They have fewer people; therefore they can only do the important things. Their people are free to direct their energy and attention toward the marketplace rather than fighting bureaucracy." This seems to have served as a model for "bowing up" of GE after Welch became its CEO in 1981. At that time, its market value was $14 billion; twenty-three years later, it was more than $410 billion.
I share all this by way of creating a frame-of-reference for what is provided in this volume, a new edition of a book first published (entitled Financial Intelligence) in 2006. Although the focus in this second edition is on entrepreneurs, the material provided will help all managers to develop the entrepreneurial mindset to which Welch refers, and, to acquire a highly-developed financial intelligence quotient (FIQ). Moreover, they can then do everything they possibly can to develop a high-level of FIQ among others at all levels and in all areas of their organization. In the Preface, Berman and Knight explain what their reader will learn:
1. How to read the three major financial statements (i.e. income, balance sheet, and cash flow) and how to interpret what they contain
2. How to calculate critical ratios and to understand what they reveal
3. Why net cash in a given time period is not the same as profit and why a company needs both profit and cash
4. How to use various return on investment (ROI) tools to analyze big purchases in order to make certain the investments add sufficient value to the business
5. How to manage working capital that helps to improve a company's cash flow and profitability even when there is no change in sales or expenses
6. How to use the three main methods for establishing the value of a business (i.e. the price-to-earnings ratio method, the discounted cash flow method, and the asset valuation method) "and many other tricks of the financial trade"
"Along the way, we'll let you in on the finance profession's little secret, which is that finance is as much art as it is science." Berman and Knight explain why understanding this "little secret" is so important to acquiring a high-level of financial intelligence.
They carefully organize their material within 30 chapters that are divided among eight sequential Parts: The Art of Finance (and Why It Matters), The (Many) Peculiarities of the Income Statement, The Balance Sheet Reveals the Most, Cash Is King, Ratios: Learning What the Numbers Are Really Telling You, How to Calculate and (Really) Understand Return on Investment, Applied Financial Intelligence: Working Capital Management, and Creating a Financially Intelli9gent Company. They also provide three appendices: Sample Financials, Exercises to Build Your Financial Intelligence - Income Statement; Balance Sheet; Cash Flow Statement; Ratios, and Under Armour and eBay Financial Statements. At the conclusion of each Part, there are contributions to the filling of the reader's "Toolbox."
Other reviewers will have their own reasons for admiring this book. Here are three of mine. First, this is not a "Finance for Dummies" although a financial novice will find nothing in it that is over her or his head. With consummate skill, Berman and Knight present and explain substance without compromising it. And when doing so, they prepare each reader to help others to increase their own FIQ by providing a model for those initiatives. In fact, Berman and Knight consider those efforts to be so important that they devote the final three chapters (Part Eight) to explaining how to create a financially intelligent company. I also appreciate this book because the authors immediately establish and then sustain a personal (rather than professorial) rapport with their reader. They use direct address throughout the narrative. For readers who are financial novices, they anticipate and address the concerns. For other readers with more developed FIQ (especially CFOs, comptrollers, office managers, and accountants) they offer a systematic review of material (e.g. nomenclature and core concepts of finance) that is already familiar to them. However, there is much to be said for reminders of what can sometimes be neglected or ignored. Finally, I appreciate the dozens of examples drawn from real-world situations that illustrate some of Berman and Knight's key points. This is especially appropriate, given the conversational (rather than professorial) tone that they sustain throughout the narrative.
One final point: All organizations have an urgent and constant need to reduce (if not eliminate) waste. Increasing the FIQ of as many workers as possible will enable them to recognize and, better yet, understand the bottom-line impact of waste and will thus be more likely to become not only involved but engaged in efforts to help their organization to reduce (if not eliminate) waste. If I were a CEO of a company, I would purchase a copy of this book for every line manager and make it required reading. And if my company has not already devised and then implemented an FIQ education program, to be implemented throughout the enterprise to varying degree, I would immediately appoint a cross-functional team of my best and brightest to do so.
I congratulate Karen Berman and Joe Knight together with John Case on a brilliant achievement. Bravo!

Five royal weddingsReview Date: 2007-10-01
This handsome little souvenir album is to commemorate an upcoming wedding anniversary -- that of England's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who will have been married for sixty years, in November 2007. It is also a look at how Royal weddings have changed and evolved from fairly private ceremonies that were witnessed by close family members and courtiers, to now what is a spectacle watched by millions on the television and launching a flurry of books, magazines and various souvenirs from the pleasant to the grossly tacky.
The five weddings themselves occur in a period of time that spans just over a century, from 1840 to 1947, with the criteria that either the bride or groom would be a monarch of the United Kingdom.
The first wedding is that between Queen Victoria and her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, in 1840. Victoria had been Queen of Great Britain for two years when her wedding was celebrated, and public curiosity was intense as to who she would choose to be her consort. With the rise of new printing techniques, there were now ways that the public could observe, albeit from a distance -- there were special prints and panoramas that were printed to feed the curiosity about the event.
About twenty years later, the next royal wedding occured, this time between Victoria and Albert's eldest son, Bertie, the Prince of Wales and the future Edward VII, and his fiancee, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, 1863. Now there was the art of photography to add to the documents; some of these were hand-tinted to create a nearly painting like quality. The gifts were also more opulent, and this time, were described in a special magazine that supplied all of the details from what the guests were wearing to engravings that showed various aspects of the wedding service itself.
Thirty years later, another wedding occured, this time between Bertie's son, George, Duke of York, and his cousin, Princess Mary of Teck, in 1894. This time, celebrations and public notice were high, with various royalties from around Europe visiting to pay their respects. The gifts were put on public display this time, and admission was charged, with the proceeds going to a charity. The bride's trousseau was described in various ladies magazines in lavish detail and illustrations.
The fourth wedding was that of George VI and Queen Mary's second son, Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. No one really expected them to become sovereigns of Great Britain, and so the celebrations were not quite as extravagant as might be expected. But one notable addition was that this was the first royal wedding to be filmed, and soon there would be opportunity for anyone to see it, all for the price of a ticket to the cinema, and sitting through a newsreel.
The fifth wedding was in 1947, with that of two of Queen Victoria's great-great-grandchildren -- Princess Elizabeth, and Prince Philip of Greece. After the dreary years of WWII, and the troubles of rebuilding, London was ready for a celebration. The outpouring from the public was immense, and it seems that all of England took the day off for a holiday. The marriage proved to be one of the most successful in the royal family, and appears to be still quite solid after nearly sixty years.
Each wedding goes into some detail about the clothing, providing pictures and closeups of the brides' gowns, showing some of the intricate sewing and decoration that went into the making. As was traditional, all of the clothing worn were made from British materials and designers. What I found especially beautiful were the samples of lace and embroidery, often with monograms and special designs incorporated into the designs. A very brief history of the couple is also included, talking a little about their childhoods, and what happened after the weddings. At the end of the book, there is also a listing of what music was performed at each wedding, with a few surprises tucked in.
What may surprise you is what you will not find in this book. There isn't any mention of Lady Diana, or of the notorious wedding of Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson.
For anyone interested in royalty, and how what started as a private celebration soon became an opportunity for public celebration, this is a lovely, well-made and designed book. The photographs and pictures are unusual, many of which I had not seen before, and gave a sense of intimacy.
The author, Jane Roberts, is the Royal Librarian, and has compiled a beautiful little volume on the lore of royal weddings. For anyone interested in the English monarchy, it would be a nice addition to their collection.
Five stars. Recommended.
