Great insight for anyone trying to exploit data warehouses
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1997-06-25
Bruce makes sense of what everyone is now calling "data warehousing." There is still a lot of confusion and hype in this market; however EIT provides the clearest frameworks and real world examples of how to truly exploit the data warehouse within the enterprise (and beyond). The author was ahead of his time in identifying that applications, not simply underlying technology, are were companies can gain an ROI in DW. However, EIT goes beyond that to identify specific business applications that deliver the greatest "bang for the buck" (pardon the cliché). I strongly recommend the book to both IS managers and business unit managers who are building or have built a data warehouse and must now figure out what it is good for. Solid "10!"

EIT has stood the test of time.

Bruce Love's book transcends the well-worn nostrums of data warehousing and wisely avoids the tired and homiletic redefinitions of database, networking, and data mining technologies. It is a book of case studies, grounded in experience and focused on business value, and is as useful today as it was in '93. For those who have read it, EIT is a valuable collection of metrics to return to regularly; for those who haven't, click on "Add it to your Shopping Cart," above

You will need lots of bookmarks as you will find this book an important reference to re-visit often as your systems evolve

I have read alot of books on Java, and this one is the only one that seems to clearly explain all of the details. It makes development easy by providing sample code, and explanations. It contains many photos that really give you the grasp of a potentially complicated coding process.

This book is outstanding in that it approaches Java Servlet development more practically than most other books. It shows the problems that you run into during development and heads them off by showing you what you may end up encountering and the approriate solution. This book saved my team alot of hours of headaches in that we ran into alot of the issues that the author had explained about in the book. Also his explanation of object pools and LDAP connectivity was excellent. I highly recommend this book to any development team.

This is the bible for MDM Architecture

Review Date: 2008-06-16
This is a book which belongs on every desk of Enterprise Information IT-Architects, CIOs and business decision makers interested in optimizing their current business processes using Master Data Management! It provides a complete MDM Reference Architecture including component interaction diagrams, MDM architecture patterns and MDM Solution Blueprints for various industries. Furthermore, it explains why MDM is a key SOA enabler and why security and privacy are of paramount importance for MDM deployments. Finally, in a dedicated chapter on Data Governance, a critical success factor for implementing MDM is explained. Another amazing aspect is that this book focuses on architectural principals and is absolutely software product agnostic. Therefore, the key principles explained for designing MDM solutions the right way without a product feature/function discussion make this book very useful for a long period of time. It was a lot of fun to read and I drew a lot of useful insights from it. In my opinion an absolute must read for MDM practitioners!

I found "The Entrepreneur's Success Code, How to run a high performance business and have a life", really amazing. It's the "...and how to have a life" part that really caught my interest. It's a study course that encourages you to ask questions of yourself such as:
What is abundance?
What are my personal objectives in my life?
What does money mean to me?

It helps you:
Transfer you inner wisdom to your business.
Create a business (or find a vocation) that serves your life.
Be certain your work allows you to become who you really are.

These are not things I expected in something that had anything to do with Donald Trump. Surprise! Surprise! You'll never be all you can be if your life is not in sync with your inner self. This course shows you how you can do it.

Finally some actionable information

"The Entrepreneur Success Codes" with Donald Trump and Jeff Burrows is a terrific product that could help any entrepreneur grow a business and run their business more effectively. Burrows does a nice job of explaining how to put proven business systems in place that let you run your business -- instead of having your business run you. As an entrepreneur, I related to that, totally; I found this product well worth my time and money. For $39, I got a lot more out of this product than I've gotten out of many $2500 seminars and entrepreneurship expos.

One of the things that makes this cookbook so great is that the index of recipe titles is in both Hungarian and English. If you only remember the recipe in Hungarian, no problem! The index directs you to the fully English written recipe with both ounces/pounds and kilograms. This is one of the first cookbooks I use for sure-fire rave reviews! Just like mom makes.

Both sides of my family are Hungarian and I grew up
having most of the these dishes as a child.

The only way I ever knew the recipes was by calling
my Mom or my Grandma, a province away, to ask what I
needed to complete a dish I relished as a child.

What a pleasant surprise to find a cookbook that had
everything I ever remembered. Some of the recipes
are identical to ones I have scratched down on pieces
of scrap paper

Thank you to the author for such an easy book to follow.

Hungarian Cookery has a special place in my heart, as I am of Hungarian ancestry. While there on the market a number of legacy recipe collections that are quite good, Eva's fills a different need.

Born in Hungary, she now lives in Canada. She and her husband John travel back regularly and her recipes are more correctly a blend of both traditional methods and current Hungarian cooking. I have tried a number of her recipes and they always work. I recommend her Langos, Roast Pork stuffed with Sausage (sometimes referred to as "in the manner of Debrecen"), and her Mock Venison. This is a worthwhile addition to any collection of Hungarian cookbooks. It is also an excellent value.

Everything you wanted to know about shareholder value... and then some!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-28
As a former management consultant, I have never ceased to be amazed by the relative lack of attention given to cash flow amongst many successful businesses and business leaders. Despite the fact that the linkage between shareholder cash flow and market capitalization is more or less iron-clad, and the typical executive fixated on shareholder value (or more correctly, share price), in my own experience most business leaders still tend to retreat to the safety of GAAP-based metrics when setting market strategy.

While this book doesn't attempt to answer this paradox, it does present a detailed "how-to" guide to applying the principles of cash flow and shareholder value. This obviously isn't the first book on shareholder value, but Profit Pools distinguishes itself from its predecessors by adopting a much more pragmatic approach, providing a series of familiar examples (sorry, no buggy whips here) that should allow even first-timers to apply the concepts of shareholder value to their own businesses, no matter how big or small. Furthermore, Jones fills in what I would consider to be the "missing link" in shareholder value theory -- whereas much of the existing literature focuses on the value created within a business, this book also addresses the equally important issue of how value is created in the marketplace.

A few caveats are in order -- some of the terminology here takes a bit of getting used to (market inflection events?) and because Jones has taken such a comprehensive approach to the subject, this book is not a quick read. Stick with it, however, and you will wonder why you hadn't applied this approach to your own business earlier.

A Practical and Insightful Guide

There are far too many business books out there. Most at best have 1 or 2 new ideas wrapped in 200 pages of fluff. Well this book is different. It takes a very practical view of what really matters in business - profit - and looks at it from end to end. In general it stays away from conceptual models and focuses on what people can really do to improve their business. It is a great hip pocket book for any business strategist or consultant that cares more about business results than powerpoint.

... and it's written in a practical way -- no finance formulae, arcane accounting rules, or esoteric notions. It's great -- it gets to the point quickly and succinctly; gets around accounting and other issues to see real value creation in all parts of the business at a `granular' level. And, then, it sets out why managing the long term is critical, and how that can be done to grow a lot of value. I'm a believer. The middle part could be a lot shorter -- I guess there's stuff in there that's new thinking. The rest of it just distills established value thinking (like The Value Imperative by McTaggart, another favorite) into actionable approaches. Take note -- it doesn't explain WHY we should manage to drive value growth, but I guess we've come to accept that as a mandate in the last few decades. Good luck with it.

Excellent and critical book

I was an IBM Fellow and Chief Architect for IBM Software Group. I helped lead the team that produced many of IBM's SOA products, as well as author many of the industry specifications. I am currently a Technical Fellow at Microsoft.

This book is excellent for teams starting SOA projects, or moving to the next level in SOA and Web services. IBM's products appear complex due to the depth and breadth of functions. This is not the case. The most common question in my customer briefings was "What do we do next, and how do we get started." IBMers presenting the big picture and next steps is not scalable; there are only so many briefers.

This book codifies the most important information that teams need. The authors have extensive experience working on projects with customers, and enabling successful projects. Writing this information in a book will allow other teams to succeed based on best practices and hard won experience for early adopters.

This book is a critical resource for any SOA/Web service team

Falling Awake by Dave Ellis, has been the turning point in my life and only in three months. It rivals Simple Abundance;A Daybook of Comfort & Joy, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff(& all of Richard Carlson's great sequels), Kitchen Table Wisdom and The Roadless Traveled (all of which I loved.)

The difference is that Falling Awake is a valuable resource book full of tools that are broken down into 12 major success strategies that can be used interchangeably with relationships, families, finances or careers. These strategies are presented as tools that will pull you into the future you desire. You begin planning with a mind that has been fine tuned with your own self-determined wants based on what you have personally determined to be what you value through exercises early on in the book.

These success strategies are first explained with great clarity as to how they can change how you live your life. Each chapter is interspersed at appropriate breaks with guided invitations to journal or interact with exercises that are designed to integrate the content of Falling Awake with your own spirit.

What I loved most about Falling Awake over other self-enrichment content is Ellis' contention that you already "have it all" and with simply applying the 12 strategies you will finally wake up to in every action and moment of your day.

I have realized great success in the relationships, personal fulfillment and professional endeavors that I was either already in the middle of or have since created in the short three months since reading and living the strategies.

Falling Awake has been useful since as a resource book to facilitate habits of thought and action in whatever way you decide to reenact the strategies, while other self-enrichment concepts loose their luster after the newness fades.

Well, you really HAVE to read this for yourself. But be aware: Once you take this book in your hands, you won't be able to put it down until you reach the last page.

An engaging English police procedural

Review Date: 2001-09-25
In West Sussex, Managing Director Alan Wainright apparently committed suicide. His will, changed a few months ago, leaves the lion's share of the estate to his nephew Alexander. Alan's influential son Graham is outraged, though he inherits a sizable amount, but not close to what he expected.

Following a police investigation and an inquest that is ruled suicide, Graham asks ACC Harper-Brown to reopen the case because he thinks someone murdered his father. Because he wants DCI Andrew Fenwick to fail, Harper-Brown assigns the case to him with instructions not to disturb the family or rekindle the media frenzy. With his hands tied, Andrew begins an investigation that he sure will substantiate the current official position. To his surprise, Andrew and his crew begin to find discrepancies and perhaps illegalities that reach from Wainright Enterprises to the local community leadership.

FATAL LEGACY is an engaging English police procedural that entertains sub-genre fans due to a story line that works on two levels: that of the investigation and a glimpse or two at Andrew's personal life. Though the murderer is in clear site the climax uses sociopath behavior (someone kills Alan at the beginning of the tale), it seems unnecessary, as avarice would have sufficed as the motive. On the contrary the most likely associate to the killer gets off free because of a lack of solid evidence and the need for closure due to the immense visibility of the case. Elizabeth Corley provides a strong tale for those readers who interested in a tight investigative novel.
