Mr. Prather's "We have taken a city" is a heart- wrenching, yet true account of murder and madness. Taking place 100 yrs ago in "post-Civil/War" era- Wilmington NC,this book provides the reader with- deep insight into turn of the century race-relati- ions,in a "re-constructionist" South. A wonderful- ly sad tribute to those who suffered most, and lost everything but their dignity. If you only read "ONE" book that deals with these ever constants of life(race-relations,injustice)I highly reccommend Mr. Prather's excellent offering in "We have taken a city". /Johnny Stone/jstone9323@aol.com "Mr. Prather lives in the Nashville TN area" Where he is a retired Professor of History at Tenneesee State University" you can write him at.. I just received my order and read this book immediately. This is a very well written story about a curious ferret. He is silly, smart and ... (you have to find out). Although it is a book for children, it has a very important message for all of us. The illustrations are just wonderful. I strongly recommend this book. I also bought three extra copies for my nieces and nephews.

I have a 5-years old son and a 1-years old daughter who love books. They really enjoy reading Weagol's Big Mess. The uniqueness of the story, its characters, and the colorful drawings are very appealing to my children. The story is well-written and the moral is very appropriate for children. I happened to meet the author and the "star" of the book at a bookstore in Orland Park, IL. My children enjoyed watching the ferret play and Mr. Torres was highly approachable. I recommend this book to any parent who has set high standards for their children!

This is a well written book that expertly envisions the story of Apple's early years. Rose provides an in-depth look at the people involved and draws out the fascinating stories that surround Apple's early existence. This is by far the most accessible and enjoyable account of Apple's founding. The only problem is that it was written in the early '90's and doesn't reach the amazingly entertaining last few years the company has gone through. If only Rose would write a sequel...

West of Eden reads like a novel which makes me wonder if it's all true. After having it gather dust on my shelves for years I finally decided to read it and it's fascinating. I had a hard time tearing myself away in order to get my final progamming assignment done. Whether it's all fact or not one thing's for sure: now that Steve Jobs has been back at Apple for a while I hope Mr. Rose writes a followup!

A brilliant history of Apple through 1989

This is going to be a tough book to get but for anyone wanting to understand Apple Computer, this makes a perfect companion book to Jim Carlton's book, Apple The Inside Story of Intrigue, Egomania, and Business Blunders.

Frank Rose takes the reader from the startup of Apple to the many misadventures during the Macintosh era of Steve Jobs and John Sculley. Sadly the book ends in 1989 when mismanagement had long since become part of Apple's culture.

To understand why bringing back Steve Jobs to save the day at Apple can only cause more misfortune, the reader only needs to turn to page 160 where Rose writes, "Andy was reading a book about Atari that had just come out, and when they were on their way to Florida he passed it on to Woz. As he read it, Woz learned something he didn't like: Years earlier, before they'd started Apple, when he was working at Hewlett-Packard and Jobs had gotten him to design "Breakout" for Atari for a fifty-fifty split, the fee wasn't $700, as Jobs had said, but $5,000."

This was a great little book. I read it in an afternoon. It could have been a little more involved, with more tips and suggestions, but it did succeed in inspiring me...as a father it is so easy to get bogged down with all the troubles and conflicts in life and you almost forget what a magical and special gift you have in a daughter.

a classic

this is the best book you'll find anywhere on father-daughter relationships and, specifically, how to deepen that relationship. Cucchiara has delivered a classic. his book should be required reading for all would-be dads. i also think it will prove, in time, to be a collector's item of enormous value when Cucchiara, sooner or later, surfaces from his relative obscurity to become recognized as the cutting-edge expert he is. if you think i'm being hyperbolic, just pick up the book and read it for yourself. it will transform the way you view your fatherhood and virtually guarantee that your daughters grow up to be the confident, self-loving women you hope they'll become.

There is a reason why it takes both a man and a woman to create a child... because fathers matter. Another valuable study on why single parenthood on either side is not to be undertaken without serious consideration. Many studies confirm that women who are "father's daughters" tend to be more confident, self-loving, accomplished, solid, and emotionally secure. Their counterparts on a whole did not fare as well. My father and grandfather both pushed me to focus my mind and be strong and independent without apology. I credit this upbringing with why I choose to be very career-oriented and unafraid of seeming intelligent around the opposite gender. If a man was scared off it was his weakness and I never would dumb myself down in response. Once a female has experienced the over-protective father who demanded her to focus on her own growth... she is not as vulnerable to being preyed upon by men with dishonorable intentions. This book is a testament to fathers everywhere.

What a breath of fresh air. This wonderful book tells you exactly how to create a beautiful relationship with your daughter for not only your benefit but for hers too. "There is a very good chance that a daughter will grow up to date and marry a man similar to her father. Most likely, she will allow men to talk to her and treat her the way her father talked to and treated her and her mother. So just how important do you think a healthy, loving relationship is between a father and his daughter? YOU DECIDE." What an important and timely book. So many women, especially women in the church, are struggling in their marriages and not telling anyone. I was one of those women. Julie's transparancy is greatly appreciated and greatly needed. I could certainly relate to her in many areas of my own marriage.

God placed this book in my hands at just the right time. Julie's insights have helped my marriage. The prayers she has written at the end of each chapter are excellent.

I don't know if the author really talked to 101 successful entrepreneurs or not. I suspect not. Instead, this book might better be sub-titled 101 tips on financing a business.

There are people who simply have to run their own business. It's a lot easier to work for someone else, just show up on time, work reasonably hard, go home a little bit later than most prople and so on. Some of us have a very hard time doing that.

I've started several businesses over the years. Each one has been more successful than the one before. Experience has taught me several things. And I'm going to use that experience to comment on some of her 101 tips.

Tip #1 - Do a business plan. There are several software programs that are almost fill in the blank. Get one and fill in the blanks. Even if you never show this plan to anyone else, it will force you to think through your whole business.

Tip #7 - Start on a Shoestring. It is much easier to get money to expand a business than it is to get money to start from scratch.

Re a bunch of Tips on borrowing money - Don't. It has to be paid back. Unless you are very, very certain that you can pay it back in a very short time - DON'T!

Tip 46-48 - Yes, yes, a hundred times YES!. Live cheaply. Don't buy the big car, big house, whatever.

Tips 77-80 - Government Programs. Forget them, they aren't worth the time they take.

Tips on venture capital and going public. This is a basic business decision. Do you want to run a small business or create a public company that you can get out of?

This lady understands what she is writing about. But keep in mind that you are talking about your business, your ideas, your future. Read a book on business.
Get a business started.
Read a book on business.
If it works great. If it doesn't, get a job for a while, start another one in your part time using what you learned from the failure of the first one.
Read a book on business.
Switch to running your business full time.
Read a book on business.
Repeat as necessary.

This book provides real-life examples of how startups get started and find the money needed to get started.

This was a wonderful book. It covers the basics as far as the options one has when planning to start a small business. Do you draw from your savings? Do you tap on family and friends? Do you mortgage your home? Or do you visit a bank and beg for some money?

The simple truth of the matter is that there are no free lunches in this world. Starting a business is very similar to buying a car or a house. You can pay for it with cash savings. Or you can put up collateral and borrow the money you need to pay for it. SBA doesn't make bank loans - they guarantee some of them. So don't think the SBA is going to do much for you when it comes time to start your small business.

This book covers financing the startup and financing the proven venture. And it does it very well. I loved the part about how business plans will explain how much capital (money) your business needs AND CAN REPAY. This is why banks and other lenders or investors will want to see the business plan you put together for your business venture.

I also thought it was good that the author pointed out that lenders and investors rely somewhat heavily on your leadership ability when determining if your company is likely to succeed. Said another way, they will rate you as a leader when evaluating whether your business plan is good. Good plans get money. Poor ones don't.

Take a look at the Table of Contents for this book. You'll see that the book covers all the bases when it comes to financing your own business. Well done. 5 stars!

I can attest to the fact that author Jan Norman interviewed each of 101 different individuals quoted in this book in the course of researching and writing it.

Indeed, she talked to many more than that, just as she had for her other books in the series: "What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business," "What No One Ever Tells You About Marketing Your Own Business" and the next one in the series which will be out in early 2006, "What No One Ever Tells You About Franchising."

The interviews were detailed, often grueling work and always time-consuming, but invaluable for readers. Each of the 101 persons interviewed for each of Jan's books has a unique story to tell, and her books have shared those stories with countless others.

This series of books published by Upstart, a division of Dearborn Publishing, finds its greatest value in the very diversity of the experiences represented by the 101 individuals in each book. For the reader, it is an opportunity not to read some self-anointed "expert" author's solitary opinion, but instead read the real-life experiences of 101 people who have been there and done that.

Each book is a compilation of 101 mistakes and/or successes that others learned from, and that readers can learn from vicariously, then apply to their own entrepreneurial efforts.

Decent Advice, But Perhaps Not the Advice You Need

Review Date: 2006-08-03
The author deserves credit for interviewing all these entrepreneurs and conveying their stories and lessons learned in a clear style. Nonetheless, I found little of value here. I'm not sure exactly why. In part it's because I had heard most of it before. But in a more fundamental way the notion of relying on the advice of successful practitioners carries with it a positive bias that proves less than helpful to struggling entrepreneurs. Her former venture capitalist who founds a financial services company, for instance, has a huge advantage in financial expertise and contacts over most of us. So it's not surprising that his new venture succeeds in raising money.

What many entrepreneurs need, in contrast, is advice on how to overcome their very difficult circumstances, including personal shortcomings and destitution. So actually lessons learned from accounts of semi-competent entrepreneurs' failures to obtain financing could prove more realistic and valuable. Most of us are semi-competent at best! And of course entrepreneurs starting up innovative tech product ventures face an altogether more challenging and even forbidding set of obstacles to raising money than those launching a new flower shop or bookkeeping service. The simpler a challenge your business represents, the more helpful this book manages to be.

This book has transformed my professional life from an amateur to a professional

Greg McCann's book has transformed my professional life from an amateur to a professional. Without this book and all of its insight about social intelligence, I would not have progressed so much in all of the walks of my life. Not only has this book taught me how to fully take responsibility for my work, as an aspiring entrepreneur When Your Parents Sign the Paychecks has raised my standard for my goals and the way I plan to accomplish them.

One common misconception about this book might be "I don't have a family business; therefore this book may not be for me." Well after reading this book, I can tell you that that statement is false. I am not from a family business, although I have definitely recommended this text to those families in all stages of business and transition. This book will give you a new outlook on a way you can transform your business as well as your life. If you follow all the exercises and look into topics discussed in the book, such as the life plan and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, your professional life will improve greatly. The life plan that Dr. Greg McCann has you do in a latter chapter of the book is the best exercise I have ever done in my life.

As a young man still trying to figure things out, I have found this book to be a guideline for me. This guideline has really helped me bring my parents back into my life, not only by me being able to be myself but also in discussing my plan with them. The book also showed me ways and habits of communication within my close network of friends and family which has helped me in countless situations. The amount of self-assurance that I received after reading this was priceless and really put things into prospective for me.

Lastly I would like to comment on the way the book is written. Not only was it a compelling read, it challenged me to look back at myself and see the big picture. While I was reading it, I really felt like I had a life coach talking to me. The book's layout is well structured too; with key definitions and charts laid out to help you truly understand the material. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to get serious about their life - for parents and students of all ages.

As a professional with one of the world's top firms serving the next generation of families who own businesses and families of wealth,I found this book to be the best resource I have found to assist young people in their career quest. The author articulates the issues I hear about from my clients every day in his description of the "eight challenges". These challenges face anyone considering working with their family business. This structure provides a systematic, step-by-step process that has never before been available. The best part is that it goes beyond just talking about it in terms of a career decision and goes deeper helping individuals assess their passions and thinking in terms of what is best for them, their family and the business.

It is about self development and awareness for individuals and includes tools that can help a family get along better and have a more successful business. At its core it helps young people take ownership for their lives, a core issue at this life stage, especially when your family owns a business and/or has great wealth.

The book is written in a voice that makes it accessible for an audience of teenagers but in my opinion it is extremely useful for all ages including parents and advisors working with family owned businesses. It even comes with a Parents Guide to coach the senior generation how to best be a productive part of their child's use of this book.

In my experience I have never read a book that has given me so much insight into how to advise members of the next generation and I would recommend this book to anyone considering working with their family, parents who own a family business and advisors who work with families in business.

Fantastic and fun read!

Most family businesses don't survive the next generation of family members. "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks: Finding Career Success Inside Or Outside The Family Business" by Greg McCann (Founder of the Family Business Center, Stetson University and the family business consulting firm of McCann & Associates ) offers a comprehensive and superbly organized guide to having a career within or without the family business. Professor McCann teaches the reader how to create and evaluate an education and career plan where decisions are made for the right reason instead of by default; develop 'marketability' for themselves instead of merely feeling entitled to a position through nepotism; build a career portfolio, obtain work experience outside their family business, and recruit objective mentors for themselves. Of special note is what Professor McCann has to say about preserving relationships while dealing with family expectations with respect to entering the family business; the importance of attitude and communication styles; and avoiding the downside of undeserved pay and benefits arising from participation in a family business. Using examples of three young people with family businesses, "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" deals with 'the amateur', 'the semipro', and 'the professional'. If you have a family business that you'd like to see your children take on, of if you are the child of a parent with a family business expecting you to take over, you need to give Professor McCann's "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" a close and careful reading. This is a unique and seminal work that should be a part of every college and community library's Jobs & Careers reference collection.

Anyone interested in Ohio High School basketball should read this book.

This book was fantastic! How this team came together to win the state championship is amazing! Roy Meyer sounds like he is some kind of player!

I own this book and really enjoyed it. This is a great book about the underdog becoming the winner. But don't be fooled, this is not just for sports fans. This ia a human interest story you will enjoy. Anyone who grew up in a small rural town will connect with this story. This is a must buy for parents who want to encourage their children about achievement, for sports fans who enjoy tournaments, and for all of us "small town" folks who remember having to do chores before homework.

Having read this book, I can only say that I was awestruck by the imagery and passion within its covers. I could not put it down after I started reading it and had to reread it several times. I got more out of each time I read it. Being an author and poet myself I appreciate the depth and character included in this book and within the author.

This is a book of free-style poetry written in refreshingly personal language. After the book was published, I realized (while talking with my poetry's mentor, Rosarito) that anyone could claim to be the author of my book. I prayed about it and asked God for guidance and clarity of mind regarding my authorship dilemma. The next morning, I woke up with one idea on mind, "I must tell the world about my name. I should claim the authorship of my book." I could not let the "light" inside be cover with a cup, it must shine bright for others to see!

With this book, I am allowing the readers to open "The window to my soul". The book is the story of my "spiritual growth and walk with Jesus". It is a book written with a lot of passion and gratitude to Jesus for not giving up on me.

This is my way to tell God ...
..."thank you for my gifts and talents of writing"
..."thank you for trusting in me to share your Word with others"
..."thank you for letting me show you that I could be a good steward of your message of truth"
..."thank you for helping me to help others to know you, to love you, and trust in you like I do.

This is a book for those who would like to take a closer look at their relationship with Jesus- and find ways to walk closer to Him.
