Tales From The Kodiak Starport is a must-read!Review Date: 2008-11-11
Bite Size Sci-Fi at its Best!Review Date: 2008-09-25
Justin's writing style flows easily and quickly pulls you into his world. When combined with characters you can empathize with, you can easily see yourself as a small businessman taking a chance, a soldier piloting a space fighter or even a paramedic blasting into orbit on a rescue mission. Through out all of the stories is spread Justin's sense of humor as well as a down in the trenches look at some of the real world issues that could come up. I particularly like the story Real Money. It shows a little bit about what kind of support a Starport might be desperate for as well as how important the bottom line would be just to keep things going.
Overall I think seven short stories would be a fine end to seven evenings. You don't have to read all night to find a good stopping place or be distracted the next day wondering how story might end. Each story stands on its own. It's all bite sized quality Sci-Fi at its best.
A read well worth the timeReview Date: 2008-08-25
As an Alaskan, I appreciate seeing works that highlight how important the industries of this state are to the future of the economic and political scene, on a local, national, and even global level. Alaska's economy needs to diversify if the residents of our state are to maintain the standard of living they currently enjoy.
While I enjoyed all the stories in this collection, my favorite is "Combat Fishing." Its theme of ecological recovery combines elements of suspense with the humor which I've come to enjoy from Mr. Oldham.
Tales from the Kodiak Starport offers a wide range of tales that address various facets of life surrounding the fictional Starport. Most of the stories have an Alaskan flavor. I really enjoyed reading it. The brevity of the stories make this book great for bedtime reading.
Alaskans in SpaceReview Date: 2008-07-18
"Coming Home" flowed in much the same way. Jarod, even though a bigger-than-life hero who easily dispatches pirates while only getting a wee bit chilled, is likable and believable because he also invites and allows emotional empathy.
By the end of the book, I'd gotten a good picture of the potential for the Kodiak Starport and had even spent some time reading about the actually existing facility on the web. Any book that sends me to Google for additional research is a winner! I like the challenge. As in Oldham's Politics and Patriotism: The Fisk Conspiracy, the political and economic bits were timely and made sense. I especially liked the way the author obliquely tied the controversies as to why we are in Iraq to the kind of unpopular war with China that we'd most likely see.
"Combat Fishing" brings Oldham's droll sense of humor out in the daylight. Being a fan of good pun-ishment, it left me with a chuckle. For the non-Alaskan audience, combat fishing is what happens on the major Alaskan rivers every summer when the salmon run. Oldham's characters have a slightly different experience. There were other places in the tales where humor slid in sideways, and that added a lot to the enjoyment.
Read the stories. Alaska is the perfect launching point for space flights, and Justin Oldham proves it in his tales.

A Book Written From The Heart!Review Date: 2008-02-19
On a side note, I find it odd for a person to do this level of research on scriptural giving and yet ignore the clear commands/directions that MEN ONLY are to hold the positions she claims to hold. Unless she only ministers to women, which she does not say, then she is wrong in trying to perform a ministry that God has commanded MEN to hold. Having said that (and swallowing hard) I admit she has written a book most men wouldn't read, much less write. But as Bob Jones Sr. said, "It is never right to do wrong to do right". The end does not justify the means.

To ascend into the shining world againReview Date: 2004-12-08
Dr. Alexander's life. Dr. Alexander was tormented and threatened by a vicious gang. Facing possible death, Dr. Alexander defended himself. Alexander landed into a corrupt criminal justice system. He faced adversity at multiple levels but he did not let it stand in the way of his success.
This is a compelling and moving story. As I read this book, I could not help but empathizes with what Dr. Alexander was going through. I was forced to question my own beliefs regarding the criminal justice system. I felt empowered by his strength to carry on.
To Ascend Into the Shining World Again, is written in a style in which you feel as if Dr. Alexander is sitting right in front of you telling his story. He did not sugar coat what happened, he kept it real and told it how it was. He used language that was brusque yet it was the only way to relay this story realistically.
Dr. Alexander's story also incorporates his strong family values and support. His relationship with his father was so moving that you could feel the love in the pages.
I think this story needs to be heard. If you are ready to listen to the undeniable truth, then you will truly enjoy this book!

Keeping it Real: To Ascend into the Shining World AgainReview Date: 2004-04-15
After reading this provocative autobiography, I adopted this book for my graduate social work course entitled "Human Behavior and the Social Environment (HBSE): Social Systems Theory". Students read the supplemental text and subsequently wrote a 12-15 page critical analysis of it. The feelings evoked in students about this book were apparent in their analyses and dynamic classroom discussions. To Ascend into the Shining World Again has also been adopted by several professors at the University of Louisville.
I adopted this book and require it to be an integral part of my graduate level HBSE course because it gives a raw and rare look at institutional and individual racism. Rarely do I find books admonishing the judicial system despite its blatant tendencies to punish and incarcerate marginalized populations. A captivating, thought provoking and riveting book of this nature is sure to make others question, if not embrace, an entirely new paradigm when examining the individual in the context of his or her environment.
Last, I find To Ascend into the Shining World Again to be refreshing in its approach, depth and intensity. It is alternative in every way possible and a must read for anyone wanting to hear the "other side."

Not Just for LibertariansReview Date: 2006-02-18
IDEAS HAVE CONSEQUENCES - 50 of the best essays from CatoReview Date: 2002-12-03
The editor provides an introduction which attempts to summarize the changes in the political landscape over the past quarter century and concludes that classical liberalism is on the ascendancy after a century of many failed experiments in statism. The book is then divided into nine topics with several selections for each topic - these are Ideas and Consequences (3 articles), Economic Growth (3 articles), The Welfare State (5), The Regulatory State (4), A World In Transition (11), Foreign Affairs (4), Trade And international Finance (4), Law And Liberty (8), and Democracy And Culture (8). Read in order, which few readers will probably do due to both time constaints and lack of interest in some of the topics, the book provides both a wonderful retrospective on the changes in the political debate over the past twenty five years and also serves as a comprehensive overview of the relevance of these ideas today. The authors include such well known figures as Milton Friedman, Alan Greenspan, an interview with F.A. Hayek, Dick Armey, Lord Peter Bauer, Jose Pinera and Antonin Scalia, but regardless of the fame of the author all pieces are both enlightening and intellectually stimulating. P.J O'Rourke's brief comments at the dedication of Cato's current headquarters, titled "THe Right To Do As You Please And Take The Consequences" even adds some trenchant and well directed wit to the collection. The longest piece is only fourteen pages and several are only three pages in lenghth, so while some of the topics are difficult if the ideas are new to the reader any can be digested in a single session.
It is impossible to chose a few favorites, although I thought the strongest topic was the collection regarding law and liberty; perhaps that is only due to my intense interest in the area and my belief that a return to the Constitutional protections of life, liberty and property are essential to our continued freedom. And I do strongly recommend that everyone read the article by Scalia (as a judge on the Court of Appeals) and the brilliant critique and reply by Ricahard Epstein. For some added flavor, some of the other articles include "The Case For US Stategic Independence" (Ted Carpenter), "Myths Of Individualism" (Tom Palmer), "Are Libertarians Anti-Government" (David Boaz), and "Enviro-Capitalism Vs. Enviro-Statism" (Terry Anderson and Donald Leal).
In conclusion, this book is for anyone who cares about the advancement of liberty and wants to sharpen their understanding of the topics which it covers. If you want to understand these ideas, whether to argue for or against them, there is no comparable collection that covers them so succinctly and states them so well by their most ardent proponents. N.B., the book is 460 pages long, not the 250 indicated in the description, and all the material is worthwhile but it is a long read that has to be accomplished gradually.
Outstanding collection of essays, still applicable.Review Date: 2004-12-05
It's interesting to see the papers on foreign relations pre-9/11, the papers on privatization of various major Guv'ment spending programs, etc. all written WELL before most of the media started talking about it.
While I don't agree with some of the papers all-together (drug papers for example) I find myself in agreement and understanding positions better than I did before. And further research online filled in the minor gaps from the last papers (circa late 00) to now.
Very nice volume. Very nice. -Ali
Very fine workReview Date: 2003-06-09
Just to tone down my entheusiasm a bit, though, I would add that many of the essays may seem a little elementary to someone who has been reading libertarian publications for a long time. But on the whole, this is a solid, highly readable work full of ammunition for your libertarian debating arsenal.

A Well Balanced Classroom TextbookReview Date: 2004-07-11
The book is broken up into three main segments; strategy, organization dynamics, and practical application with future considerations.
Each chapter within each segment has three main sections; topical discussion, cases, and readings (i.e. journal type articles) related to the chapter's topic in that order. Although I think it would have better to have the readings before the cases, it not really that impeding.
I found the topical discussion to the point, borderline brief, which is good since most people only can remember 10% of what they're reading anyway. The negative here is that this book may have to be supplemented with other material to cover a semester length.
The cases do not present any preconceived questions, so the institution or instructor will have to come up with those on their own. I like this since it allows an instructor to personalize the book to their class, not that they don't do that anyway.
Overall, this is a decent text with up-to-date knowledge (as of 2004) to be relevant for a few years to come.
