As an old timer going back to college, I purchased this book for my spring semester course. My daughter is in medical school, and she looked it over. Her pronouncement was that she knows most of these topics in more depth, but that if I master the contents of the book, it will be like "med student lite". That's a definite compliment.

This is a great book. It gives a perfect amount of information, not too much, but not too little. I love the pictures and the diagrams. I have the newest edition, 3rd. It's only about 5 pages more than the 2nd edition, so if you need to save money, you won't be missing out on much if you get the 2nd edition.

This book is such an interesting read that I could not put it down until I finished.

It is not just about his psychic ability but also about his life with an abusive alcoholic parent and his experiences with narrow-minded people. An inspirational read.

This was a beautiful book - although difficult for me to read because of my own life. The author portrayed his life honestly and with integrity - never trying to feel like he was a victim - even though that would have been an easy thing for him to imagine. I received it for christmas and finished it that day. It was hard to put down.. a good read for anyone going through an awakening - or for anyone who is a child of alcoholism..

I Knew I Would Find Phil Jordan Again

Phil Jordan saved the life of my son.

In one chapter of this book, Phil relates the story of a child lost in the dense woods of upstate New York, and how he came to rescue the child through his gifts of psychic awareness.

I was eager to read this book. First, of course to read Phil's account of the story, and then to learn what turns his life has taken in the intervening twenty five years.

The book was rewarding, demonstrating Phil's triumphs over the ignorance and narrow mindedness of his contemporaries, as well as the threads of mystical awareness in his family background and a wonderful willingness to share the secrets of his soul and personal epiphanies.

In chapter eight he writes "...to Tommy Kennedy and all those involved I shall be forever thankful." Tom Kennedy's mother can only hope that this gifted man can know her eternal gratitude, and that after twenty five years I can thank him once again for saving my son's life. Kudos to Phil for having the courage to write this book.

This book is a must have on chess history. It is a little pricey but the content is trememdous. If you are new or old to chess this book is for you. I never tire from the great games the masters have played. This book is seldom in print but if you can get it snatch it UP. You won't be disappointed.

Review Date: 2003-10-02
This book is fun to read. And unlike an ordinary chessbook, this is one you actually READ, as opposed to study. The ratio of words to game annotations is unusually high.

What's really great about the book is the number of relatively obscure players who receive attention. Fischer, Lasker, and Steinitz receive the most, but 45 other players get their own separate sections, in addition to the Italian School theorists and the 7 Pleiades of Germany.

Paulsen gets a much-deserved section as a player far ahead of his time and typically overlooked in chess history. Writes Fauber, "The tragegy of Paulsen is that only the players who went beyond his successors ever understood him. His play has such a contemporary feel that it is hard to appreciate what a true pioneer he was."

The two noteworthy omissions, Bronstein and Tal, are perhaps forgivable, if not laudable, for those players have popular, excellent, and readily available autobiographies. (Sorceror's Apprentice & Life and Games of Mikhail Tal.) However, there are no GAMES of Bronstein's, and only a non-tactical loss for Tal.

There are many players mentioned in passing, and though there are no post-Fischer games, there is at least a chapter discussing the three K's, plus Polgar, up-and-comers, and the damned computer itself.

With this coverage, Fauber dovetails nicely with Saidy's March of Chess Ideas, which concentrates on mid to late 20th century players and has full chapters on both Tal and Bronstein. Also, Saidy goes into more depth on the smaller number of players covered. I recommend buying BOTH books, if you can find them.

Euwe's Development of Chess Style, which concentrates on playing style rather than on biography, provides an interesting comparison. You would not regret purchasing all 3 books.

Back to Fauber.... There is a complete index of players and their opponents. There is also an index of openings, which serves mainly to demonstrate the wide coverage of the book as the annotations are not thorough enough to make this a useful treatise on openings. (Get Dumont's 500 Master Games if that's what you want.)

There are over 200 games, many well-known. I did not find the annotations particularly enlightening, aside from the simple threats mentioned in many of the games of the first half of the book, and I doubt that a stronger player would see much value in them either. But the primary aim, according to Fauber in his introduction, is not instruction, but rather, "to spotlight the major players and their contributions to chess. Games have been included that attempt to portray the style, [and] the personal touch which goes with the greatness, of the players. Sometimes, though, a game has found entrance because it is pretty, and the readers will enjoy it. That is the ultimate aim of this book, to offer some evenings of enjoyment exploring the rich past which chess bequeaths to all of us."

He succeeds in this aim: A chess book for all fans, weak or strong. But sadly out of print.

At last - a book on auditing that combines verve, panache, and a mountain of useful information. I have been an avid follower of O'Regan's writing for several years - his classy articles and IIA books have been a constant companion in my professional life as an auditor. He seems sometimes to be leading a one-man crusade to lift auditing writing out of its generally stuffy doldrums and onto a higher plane.

"International Auditing" is O'Regan's best achievement to date, and the intellectual self-confidence that underpins it is almost breathtaking. Who else would dare to undertake, in one book, all of the following: a history of auditing in its various forms, guidance on international risks, advice on logistics and safety, and a detailed country guide that covers economics, politics, history, and demographics? In my opinion the country guides are worth the price of the book alone, and are a pleasure to read.

In summary, my message to O'Regan is "Well done!" More, please...

Create A Profitable Online Business Presence!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-13
Despite the downturn in the corporate business world, the Internet still exists as a means for enterprising people to market their business ideas to make a living. Opportunities are boundless and growing numbers of people continue to give the Internet a try. There are plenty of resources available to help them succeed.

Internet Prophets offers readers an excellent collection of business concepts, strategies, and instruction to help them start online businesses. The book features information about creating sound business plans, managing businesses - including money matters, creating effective Websites, marketing business Websites, online resources, and general business information that will make an impact on the way people do business - while being mindful of operating budgets!

Throughout the book readers are reminded about setting clear goals and objectives. Planning every stage of one's business is of paramount importance - the business plan, the Website, marketing, search engine strategies, and knowing what the competition is doing are all aspects of a business that demand close attention to detail and determination to carry out.

Most fascinating about the book - in my opinion - are the business strategies provided. Readers are exposed to some exciting and very practical ways to draw attention to themselves and to maintain professional and profitable business-client relationships. Strategies include establishing online communities, setting up auction services, creating portals, providing visitors access to information, joining e-marketplaces, adding interactive tools to Websites, hosting live online events at Websites, adding dynamically updated content to Websites, and thinking globally when planning the action.

The tone of the book is serious and the rewards for gleaning from it are enormous. The strategies are sound and the resources provided will put people in touch with the companies, products, and services they need to develop a meaningful online business presence that will produce positive results for them. The book is ideally suited for start-up business operations and those existing businesses that want to and probably should make the move to the Internet to promote themselves. Essential reading!

This is a book for any small business that's thinking about how to use the Net to build their business. Thank goodness, this book is past the Internet hype and on to what really works in the real world. Chapters cover topics such as online shopping, digital delivery, "think globally, click locally", and (hello!) customer service.

Although it purports to apply to small, medium and large businesses, it's most appropriate to smaller businesses who need a practical guide to moving their business on the net. I especially liked the chapters on "Marketing Your Web Site" -- practical, spam-free advice on raising your profile online...

I am so thankful to have found this book. The way the author distills down information that I would have otherwise had absolutely no knowledge about is helpful beyond words. It's also nice to pick up a 450 page resource and not be afraid to dive in and use it. Having little icons and images to guide you through the book was also helpful.
It is so packed full of information you might clall it an investors bible. And if seeing all the forms first hand wasn't enough, it also comes with a cd rom with everything you need to make money work for you.

I don't get motivated to write reviews very easily, but this book is definitely, as the proverb goes, worth its weight in gold!

This book, published in 1984, is one of the first to actually focus on a specific award. In this case it's the Iron Cross; a German award that is possibly the most recognizable medal in the world (along with the Purple Heart and, perhaps, the Medal of Honor).

Gordon Williamson has gone into great detail in researching the history and legacy of the Iron Cross. He relates well the history of the award, from it's inception in 1813, through 'the glory years' of 1914 and 1939. Included in the book are many pictures of awards and awardees along with information dealing with detecting fakes, and the traditons of the awarding of the Iron Cross.

Although the book is not large at 5.5" by 9" and 176 pages it includes many clear (b&w) pictures and a wealth of information that any militaria collector cannot do without.

Those who have any interest in militaria, German military history, medals and ribbons or uniforms will be happy to aquire this book and the information contained within.

Mr. Williamson, through the publication of this book, is recognized as one who has made the collecting of militaria in general, and Third Reich militaria in specific, a respectable, enjoyable and rewarding endeavor.

Excellent piece of research; a must for collectors

This book is no longer in print, but is should be. A must for the collector and enthusiast. The author begins with the origins of the 1813 Iron Cross, which was first awarded during the Napoleonic Wars. Always interesting and difficult to put down. The book contains information provided by several World War II recipients of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Fascinating read. Apolitical, it simply details some of the exploits of some very brave German soldiers, sailors and airmen (some non-Germans as well) who fought for their county, served the German Fatherland, and were given the gratitude of their nation in the form of a very special medal.

Fascinating and Interesting book about forgotten warriors

A great book that tells the story of German Soldiers and Sailors who achieved the Iron Cross from the Napoleonic Era through the end of WWII and the forming of West Germany. The author did an excellent job of explaining the lives of these heroes of battle and how they earned the Iron Cross (Germany's Medal of Honor). From Von Buehler to Otto Skorzney all of the recipients had to face battle and overcome overwhelming odds. Some of the winners of the Iron Cross do not deserve it but you can tell who the real warriors are from those who are just petty imitation. Highly recommended to any military history and WWII enthusiast.

I am the officer technical lead for a 50-person military intrusion detection operation. I read Mr Green's book to get a broader understanding of the telecom world, of which network intrusion detection occupies a small but highly visible part. This immense book (774 pages of text, plus URLs, acronyms, and a glossary) addressed nearly every topic I had encountered reading communications magazines, speaking with the telecom industry, and researching the Web. While no single book can provide the depth needed for truly understand a specific technology, Mr Green's work provided the foundation for future research. For example, after getting the context for SS7, I may now buy "Signalling System #7, 3rd Edition" by Travis Russell. I didn't give the book five stars, as I was not completely comfortable absorbing the material. This is the sort of book that requires you to read the whole book twice in order to appreciate the early chapters. References to technologies like ATM or frame relay in the first half of the book make much more sense after reading chapters dedicated to those issues. If Mr Green had given me slightly more to grasp while reading the early material, or had perhaps organized the book with the telecom novice in mind, I may have given five stars. Nevertheless, if you're looking for one-stop shopping for telecommunications, I highly recommend this book. Don't be fooled by the "business" classification on the dust jacket -- this book is a technical volume, with protocol headers and other details included. Great work Mr Green!
