Best Indian Cookbook!

Review Date: 2008-12-15
My husband and I are not of Indian extraction, but we've always enjoyed the food, both eating and cooking, and we own a personal library of over 65 Indian cooking titles - including "Dakshin". I tell you this by way of introduction. So when I say that this (and "Festival Samayal" by the same author) is the BEST cookbook of the cuisine - especially South Indian cuisine - that I have ever used, it is no overstatement.

I have made many recipes out of this book, and have never had a failure yet. So far, the most universally loved recipe is the Vellai (White Coconut) Chutney. As Emeril might say, you could put this stuff on a bumper and it would taste great!

Viji (the author), herself, is very personable and encouraging. When I had a special dinner party coming up, she provided me with several sample menus that might be appropriate for the occasion. She also told me about this new edition (I've been using the original) of the book, that simplifies the recipes and menu planning even more. That's what I'm doing here today. Buying a copy of the new one.

I cannot overemphasize this - If you'd like to try your hand at Southern Indian cooking, you can't do any better than this.

Fabulous book. Takes me to my grandmother's kitchen. Well written, clear, simple, beautiful photos. I have two grown girls and it is the best present I have got them. Living in America, we miss the Indian kitchen, their flavours and taste and what a great way to pass on that experience to the next generation, thank you Viji and keep it coming!

The author has made recipes simpler. Shortened recipes and measured cooking times. The reason Viji's books are so interesting is because they act as a record of the recipes of a Tamil Brahmin food, resurrecting old favourites as well as keeping traditional everyday cooking alive. At a time when a sort of pan Indian cooking is invading every kitchen -- rice, dal, paneer, garam masala -- books of this sort are important to preserve the identity of a culture. For identity is inextricably tied up with food habits.

Samayal, for instance, her best-selling book so far, lists 12 kinds of rice, including vaangi bath (brinjal rice) and maangai sadham (raw mango rice). Besides a variety of gravies, vegetables, curries and pachadies, she even gives eight recipes for rasam, and a list of `tiffin' items.

This book has quickly become one of my most used cookbooks. The book contains a wide variety of easy to cook recipes, including many tasty sambars, rasams, curries, and side dishes. There is nothing fancy about the book and I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed when I removed it from the box. However, the disappointment turned to delight when I tried the recipes. Everything I cooked was delicious and well enjoyed by my family. The recipes were fairly easy to prepare, used a manageable number of ingredients, and cooked fairly quickly. Most recipes use a combination of red lentils, coconut and/or tamarind, giving them the distictive and familiar south indian taste. If you are interested in learning south indian cooking, I suggest you give this book a try.

My wife recently got this book and finds it to be very helpful. The cooking (and I am one of the prime beneficiaries) had improved perceptibly and has a lot of added variety. The author is very approachable by email, clarifies doubts (e.g., "cup" is equivalent to American teacup, types of onions, tomatoes to use) and offers suggestions for new recipes. It doesnt get better than that.

My wife also *highly* recommends the book on Tamil festival cooking by the same author.

She has seen the other book mentioned by Amazon (Dakshin) which she feels is relatively "complicated" as the recipes use many ingredients.

This is an excellent book. It is well written, easy to understand and is full of useful examples. As an Organizational Development person, the most astounding element of Galsworth's FiveS+1 method, is that incorporated into the bases of her model is the bases for creating lasting and sustainable change. Sustainable change is a crucial element required for any successful Lean implementation. If applied correctly FiveS+1 definitely has the capability to create the critical mass required for lasting organizational change.

Finally, a book that details a system for applying visual techniques, including color photos and something for every department. A great in-depth treatment of the subject that goes far beyond a cursory Lean discussion. This is a practical, hands-on implementation guide that transforms the shop floor while putting responsibility in the hands - and minds - of the "value add" employees.

I am the Plant Manager of a parts fabrication plant and was absolutely stunned by the simplicity and brilliance of Ms Galsworth's definition of waste as "motion" - the seeking or sharing of information that takes a worker away from his/her value adding station. Many of the writings that I have read in my 15 years of lean experience have provided insight into implementation, but Ms Galsworth's definition of motion is a breakthrough in thinking as it re-defines or amplifies one of the basic concepts of the Toyota Production System. I see this waste in my plant every day, now I can see it differently and can do something about it.

This book is an expression of the excellence alluded to in the title. It has beauty and practicality in a perfect marriage.

Spinning one's wheels trying to get a job done without needed answers and without appropriate equipment: this is an experience that is all too common. It wastes time and energy but, just as importantly, it causes unnecessary frustration and demoralization of personnel. Dr. Galsworth explains how to organize a workplace so that each person has the tools and information needed to accomplish the required tasks.

The secret of the Visual Workplace is that, not only does it lead to increased productivity and quality, but it also creates an environment where personnel feel respected and empowered, where indeed their ideas and insights are utilized and valued. Employee turnover declines and coming to work becomes enjoyable. Enlightened self-interest on the part of management means a harmonious, well-thought-out arrangement of objects and people. This is good feng shui on every level.

With its glossy pages and high-quality paper, the book feels good in the hand. There are fascinating photos of job implementations at well-known and international companies. Various management paradigms are illustrated with clear diagrams. It is fun just to flip through the pages.

Although I am a Dean in an acupuncture school, I found Visual Workplace of great interest. Its organizational concepts, such as ways to reduce "information deficit", were as applicable in our small school as they are in huge factories.

I like this little cookbook. There is a large variety of recipes in here. There is also a section for waffles with whole grains and waffles with fruit additions. Since I have a belgium waffle maker, I usually have to double the recipes to get more than one waffle. Every time I make waffles I'll use a different recipe from this book, and all of them have turned out tasting great.

Best Waffles we have tasted in a long time. Great selection.

I recently got a waffle iron, but the recipe included with the appliance was disappointing to say the least. I borrowed this book from the library because I have been very pleased with German's bread machine books and thought I would test some of the recipes to see if the book was worth adding to my collection. I shouldn't have worried! I could have bought it outright and saved myself a little time! We have tried the Sweet Butter Waffles (they are as heavenly as they sound) and the Peanut Butter Waffles (also very yummy and popular with the kids as well). In addition to the fabulous recipes, German also gives detailed information on waffle making in general (how much batter to use, how to tell when the waffle is done, etc.) and how to adapt recipes if you want to make pancakes instead. She even gives you "permission" to just mix everything together at once if you don't want to take the time to separate the egg (and I can tell you from personal experience, the results are just as delicious!) If you love waffles, or if you've always wanted to make them but were too chicken to try, this is the book for you!

This book is a pleasure to read and to keep around for others to enjoy. I keep it on my desk at work so that my visitors can enjoy the incredible photography. The book also gives a unique insight in to the history of the many firms on Wall Street and how consolidation has led to our current list of players. Many find it interesting to see how certain firms came to be what they are today.

One example of an interesting foreshadow is that the author has included a picture of the Banker's Trust building reflecting off of a Deutsche Bank conference room table. The two frims merged several years after the photo was taken.

Since buying this book I now enjoy walking around lower Manhattan. While before I was caught up in the rat race, I know see the beauty of the arcitecture and can better appreciate the history of Wall Street. This book is full of insightful anecdotes which lead to interesting stories for me to share.

This book is a must for anyone who works in the finacial world for its insight and to keep around for others to enjoy.

I was happily surprised when I saw one of the authors books on Nantucket while on vacation there. I bought the book and was again happily surprised at its combination of photography and narration. I would rate Nantucket Island five stars as well.

Web business success by applying business basics
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-10
In the arguments about taxation of Internet sales, I am firm in believing that they should be taxed. For some time, I have thought that the only protection that net companies needed was from themselves. Launched without a great deal of forethought, market research or even a viable plan, many of them are now crashing. Business on the Internet is no different that any other business, and since that is the foremost point of this book, it is indeed one that could have made a significant difference if it had been published and read two years ago.
The author, a Professor of Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon, was one of the first professors at a top-ranked school to teach the business uses of the Web. The approach in this book is all business, with Return On Investment (ROI), Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) equations being used to make the points. There is not one word of hype in this entire book. If there is one thing that has been so clearly lacking in the explosion of dot-com companies, it has been this lack of management by equation. Guerrilla marketing and fancy ads will get you noticed, but only a positive balance sheet will keep you alive long enough for it to matter.
The remainder of the book covers the modeling of a business constructed on the web using two that he has created, www.datingexpert.com and www.yesnomaybe.com. Both deal with online dating/meeting services and the models of need, perceived value and potential revenue points are "classic" studies in how to plan and execute a business model based on user-generated information. One of the most valuable pointers which shows how much the author truly manages the sites are the data points about how people find the site. For example, on page 177 there is the caption, "Only 1.3 percent of my Web sites' traffic is due to users guessing the site's address." I did find myself wishing that he had shared more information as to how this data was acquired.
While the business models used on the Web are different in degree from those offline, they are not different in kind. The basic rules of business still apply and as the author repeats so many times, it is what you do offline that matters. Lose sight of the business equations and the points where you add value and your company will be another dot.com Titanic.

Build Websites Anchored in Business Reality

Review Date: 2001-10-19
Building effective business systems and web applications requires an understanding of not only technology, but also the organization and the processes in which it will be implemented.

Nick Flor, a Professor of Information Systems at Carnegie Mellon's Graduate School of Industrial Administration, argues that to create high-value business web sites requires business as well as technical knowledge. He draws a distinction between a mere web site, which he says, exchanges information and a business web site, which exchanges value - it generates significant revenues and/or drastically pares expenses.

He says three skills are required is proposed for systematically molding the Web to the specific requirements of the specific business.

1. General Business Knowledge.
2. An ability to analyze and diagnose business activities.
3. An ability to design Web treatments to address those activities.

To equip Web entrepreneurs and consultants with these requisite skills, Flor organizes his book into four sections:

1. Web Business 101 - This section covers the first business skill - the big picture. This general business primer includes a discussion of Return on Investment, Net Present Value, Payback, Internal Rate of Return, production, distribution and the effects of competition.
2. Web Business Engineering - Using the knowledge acquired in the first section, the book proposes a methodology that links technical knowledge with business specific knowledge.
3. Case Studies Putting Offline Activities Online
4. Case Studies Applying Web Business Engineering to Online Activities

Stick with the book until you reach the case studies. They add value to the first two sections.

This well-written book sheds important light on web development. By focusing on the author's definition of "value", managers and development teams will avoid aping successful online companies, building instead, systems that address what companies should be doing online based on their offline activities.

The way it should be done!

Until reading this book I thought I had a good understanding of what it took to design the underlying strategy and processes supporting commercial web sites. After reading this book I clearly saw how wrong I was.

The approach set forth in this incredible book is straightforward and focused solely on business imperatives. I suspect that the author and publisher realized that the title would attract IT professionals and consultants, which accounts for the inclusion of business 101. I almost skipped over this part and am glad I didn't. Even here what I thought I knew about business turned out to be superficial. The education you will receive in Business 101 goes well beyond the basics and I recommend that everyone read this regardless of whether you are an IT professional or have a business background. You might just discover that you've been misapplying common techniques such as NPV, IRR and ROI, or using the results in erroneous ways. In other words, the section titled "Business 101" is much, much more.

I loved the author's approach to value chain analysis, which is straightforward and based on a simple, but effective, notational language. Here, like in every other chapter, I learned techniques that will serve me well in general consulting assignments outside of web business engineering.

The web business engineering methodology itself is one of the leanest, most effective processes that I've ever encountered. I can only describe it as elegant. It's a blueprint for success when success is measured by how well a system is aligned to business strategy and goals. If you follow the method and resist the temptation to take shortcuts you will be rewarded with a system that meets all of your requirements and objectives whatever they may be - and you'll know exactly what the value of that system is to your organization.

A few observations about this book: (1) Give yourself plenty of time to read through this book and work through each example. It took me four times as long as it would for a book of approximate page count and topic complexity. If you're unwilling to make this commitment, perhaps you should pass this book up. (2) I fully agree with the author and a previous reviewer that web systems projects should be managed by business instead of IT. (3) If you're an IT professional get this book and read it from cover to cover - even if you never work on a web project you'll receive an incredible education in business factors and requirements analysis that will serve you well on *any* project. As a fellow IT professional I will assure you that this book will change your outlook.

This book is among the best I've read on any topic or subject and should be required reading for anyone who is assigned to a web project. It's also, in my opinion, one of the most important books published in the past few years.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in creating websites with great business value. As a server-side applications developer, I've been mainly concerned with exploiting the web as a technological medium. This book opened my eyes to the web as an information medium, strategically used to improve a company's bottom line. It truly delivers on its claim -- [serving as] "a bridge from technical understanding to business savvy".

The book is extremely well-organized and has tons of practical knowledge and insight. Furthermore, all the principles are illustrated using easy to follow, real life examples. Excellent throughout -- highly recommended!

Refreshing, Business-focused and Candid

Review Date: 2001-09-14
The author provides a business-oriented (and technology-free) approach to engineering an on-line presence that is effective and should set the standard for a methodology for how to go about such projects. This is embodied in a framework that is defined by four principles (1) work is a combination of physical and informational activities, (2) informational work is accomplished by propagating content, (3) valuable and innovative content can be found in existing manual methods, and (4) an on-line strategy should be based on off-line advantages. These principles are simple, yet powerful. They are also not as easy to adhere to as they seem, which becomes apparent when you begin mapping activities in subsequent chapters.

There are so many things I like about this book, so I'll stick with the highlights. First, the differences between the way IT/IS and business units approach projects are carefully examined. Understanding these differences will make or break a web project, and as an IT professional I fully agree with the author that IT is the wrong organizational unit to lead and manage web projects. Their role should be relegated to that of support.

Second, the author leads you through the basics of value chain analysis, business factors and financial analysis. This is an excellent refresher for business professionals and is essential reading for IT professionals, especially those who claim to be business analysts. I learned a great deal from the discussion on ROI, NPV and IRR. These are not new knowledge areas for me, but learning about the fallacies and pitfalls inherent in each approach that can trap you or lead you to bad decisions was priceless.

What I learned the most from was the Quick Primer on Diagnosing Problems and Opportunities. As in the rest of the book the author uses case studies to reinforce the concepts and principles. In this case you are led through a mailing cost analysis and some of the results are surprising. For example, after all of the cost drivers are mapped out on a spreadsheet you play with some variables and discover that commonsense properties of the model do not necessarily act in commonsense ways. Doubling productivity (assuming it is possible to coax such a thing from humans) only yielded a 2.5% reduction in costs. Using cheaper labor actually cost more in the particular model. As an aside, the model was not contrived to create these counter-intuitive results - it is a plain vanilla cost model that you would commonly encounter or build. In this chapter you are introduced to a step-by-step process that shows how to effectively perform a cost analysis and find the true drivers that can be changed to reduce or avoid costs.

A caveat about this book: it can be easily read, but is merely interesting unless you take the time to carefully step through each case. If, however, you take your time and work through the problems and trace the value chains--a tedious task--you will find that this book has many chapters that are profound. That's a strong word, but in my opinion an accurate one. I've applied the approach in this book on a real-life project and can attest that it works extraordinarily well - and that's the highest compliment one can pay to an author.

First part of the book while describing Distributed Systems, Middleware and EAI lays strong foundation for Web Services. Second part of the book provides an extensive reporting about Web Services Architecture, related standards, service composition and BPEL. Though at the outset this book looks like serving academic purpose but it also provides the great insight of the subject to the programming community.

This book is must have which draws detailed conceptual and architectural views on Distributed Systems, EAI and Web Services.

This book is a little more expensive than most of the flashy Web Services books these days but it is well worth the money. Set in small font and not wasting pages on chapters like "History of XML and SOAP" this book is dense in content on the architecture of distributed systems, including Web Services. We get to learn about the issues of distributed transactions and the differences between conversations, coordination and orchestration. The text is precise but nevertheless easy to follow. One of the best books I have seen on Web Services architecture.

I am using this book for a graduate level class about Web Services. I like the books approach on giving you enough background about middle-ware evolution that makes it easier to understand what Web Services are trying to accomplish. Given that the actual technology (implementation details) change so much in this area the books approach makes a lot of sense. I also found explanations to be concise and clear.

Advice: if you are looking for a hands-on how-to book about XML this is not the book to pick up. Otherwise, if you are looking for a good fundamentals book that will help you paint a big picture of Web Services this book is great!

If you want comprehensive high level overview of today's enterprise software landscape, this is a must-read.

One of the best books which answers the question , Why Web Services?? Unique perspective on middlewares in general.

Do not expect any code examples or details of any particular middleware.

I wish I had this book ten years ago before my first business failed. It would have saved me much heartache and many sleepless nights. The tax withholding information alone is worth more than the price of the book.

This is a delightful basic book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and successful. Richard Stim and Lisa Guerin came up with an enlightening book that provides a road map to success in a small business.

The book gives, step-by-step, a comprehensive guideline of a business start-up process, identifying target customers, promoting the business on a small budget, doing the cash flow forecasts, budgeting and other important issues. It also explains the business risks and challenges and how you can overcome them effectively. I found the information to be very practical and provide critical advice to help entrepreneurs avoid costly errors.

The book is well written in an easy to follow and understand format. The small business beginner will find the book useful, helpful and handy as it provides real life advice that will help your business to stay afloat and thrive.

This book can be read in an evening, and it's loaded with very specific information and resources for setting up shop on a limited budget. Whether it's finding an inexpensive way to design postcards or how to get a website up painlessly, the author goes way beyond general information about conducting business and suggests specific tools for getting typical business tasks done efficiently and cheaply. Written from a legal perspective in plain language, it arms you with the legal knowledge you'll need to set up your business properly and to avoid expensive penalties.

I only wish this book had been out years ago when I decided to venture off into the world of start-ups. This book is a fantastic read if you are thinking of turning your passion into your own business. My suggestion for anyone thinking of starting their own company is to first buy this book and then think deeply about the risks involved, and if you still think they are truly worth it, then read this book AGAIN! Most people don't know that the chances of a start-up succeeding are pretty slim. However, if you are still convinced that your idea is brilliant and that starting up your own company is what you want to do then this book is a must have.

The book explains some of the obstacles that you will encounter and examines both the mundane and the meticulous details you will need to think about while trying to set up shop and navigate your way through the heady world of business ~ all while trying to get paid! The best part about Whoops is that it is optimistic yet honest in its assessment of starting up a new company. A very important fact Whoops touches upon, which is often overlooked is that perseverance alone isn't enough to keep your company in business. If you decide to take the plunge don't do it without Whoops!

Fundraising Made Easy

This book is refreshingly reminiscent of "The One Minute Manager." There are so few gems like this that simply and clearly give the important substance of a topic without wandering through needless arcane rhetoric that sounds intellectual but leaves the reader wondering what to do. Concrete information that every fundraiser needs to know - from creating a budget to finding and asking for money to appropriately recognizing donors is presented in a step-by-step, plain-spoken way. And it all makes immediate sense. Just to make sure the reader grasps and personalizes each concept, Dr. Goldstein makes every chapter interactive. Each principle is reinforced with a few questions for the reader, such as: "List 3-5 `sizzles' that would sell a potential donor," "write a snappy `p.s.' that prompts a potential donor to donate," "list 5 lawyers who specialize in wills and estates who might work with you to find major donors." As a brilliant and most useful caveat, Dr. Goldstein lists different resources specifically related to each principle that the reader can utilize for more information.

I recommend this book to those in traditional sales positions as well as fundraising because many of the principles - compelling sales letters, relationship-building, face-to-face sales calls, choosing the most likely leads, record keeping, effective public relations campaigns and web site development - obviously pertain to both fields. As a former College Vice President of Institutional Advancement, I sent many staff members to workshops that only seemed to promote the mystery of fundraising. This book was really all they needed.

I highly recommend "You Can't Go Wrong By Doing It Right" to anyone who wants to be a success in business, whether you have an established business or are starting a new one. In this age of high tech, there is one constant -- people. If you do not understand and know how to deal with people, all the high tech will not help. This book is a breath of fresh air for people like myself, who are tired of dealing with companies by voice mail and endless menus to make selections that only lead you further and further away from a real person. "You Can't Go Wrong By Doing It Right" is about real people, real situations and the kind of genuiness that keeps customers for life. As I read each of the 50 principles with each entertaining example, I found myself saying I would like to be treated that way both as an employee and a customer. Not only is the book a roadmap to success in business, it is beautifully written.

The title alone is worth the price of admission!

There are 50 invaluable principles for being successful in business in this book. The writing was succinct, powerful and to the point. Very easy and enjoyable reading. I loved learning about the history of Burdines and the Burdines' family. The founder of Burdines was inspiring having failed dramatically 2 times in his life then in his 50's beginning the mega successful "Sunshine Fashions" department store. I highly recommend this book. It should be in every business person's library.

My husband, who recently started his own business, and I loved reading this clever and complete presentation of sound business practices. As we all know, the best way to succeed is to emulate the successful. Dr. Goldstein has given us the history of a famous South Flordia family by outlining their strategies in an easy-to-follow guide. There is something for everyone here from the independent entrepreneur to the corporate executive. You really can't go wrong by doing it right - and by reading this book.

This book hits the bulls-eye!

This is a business book that sifts through the superfluous and presents an abundance of concise, effective and time-tested principals for doing business. It is destined to become a classic. "You can't go wrong by doing it right" speaks to the business novice as well as the seasoned executive; it should be required reading in the classroom and boardroom. Kudos to Dr. Goldstein for resurrecting the lost art of doing business the right way. Perhaps the title should be, "You can't go wrong by reading this book." I highly recommend this book without reservation.

The author has put her heart and soul into this amazing book which covers just about everything you need to know to start a home business!

In all my years reviewing books, I have never come across one so packed with useful information on this topic. Although the subject matter is very broad, Vick breaks each topic down into manageable subjects offering insight and wisdom within each one.

Establishing the legal status of your business is an important first step and the options are explained very well. Of course, being an accountant myself, I was very interested in the chapter on business taxes which proved to be comprehensive and easy to read.

With the internet offering endless possibility for the business world, a large section of the book is dedicated to website strategies and promotion. Vick has obviously done her homework and compiled extensive resources for free website hosting, free internet access and free website submission services which provide an affordable way to get your business off the ground.

Profiles from successful professionals have been included offering both advice and encouragement as you enter this realm.

A fabulous book at an incredible price! I definitely recommend reading this book if you are considering the idea of working at home. You will not be disappointed!
