In "Eric and the Enchanted Leaf: The First Adventure," we meet a little boy named Eric. He is very curious about nature and how it works. He is playing outside when he sees an anthill and starts thinking about what was inside. He swats mosquitoes and also threatens to squash a spider when it tries to eat an ant.

As he is playing, a leaf falls and it turns out to be a magic leaf. Eric grabs the leaf and suddenly finds himself to be tiny and now trapped in the spider's web. The spider was about to wrap Eric in silk to eat him when a fairy appeared and stopped the spider from eating Eric.

The sky fairy's name is Sophia and she teaches Eric all about nature. She helps show him how hard ants work and how nature is not always fair. Eric learns about how he affects nature and says he won't bother the ants again.

"Eric and the Enchanted Leaf: The First Adventure" was very interesting and had a lot of easy facts about some of the things we see in nature. The pictures were also nice; they were bright and simple and helped tell the story.

I have shared this book with my first graders ever since it was published. Ms. Frontiera captures the magic of discovery and the curiosity of childhood with a delightful character who pulls us into his adventure. The text is written to the understanding of 6 and 7 year olds, and the beautiful illustrations by Mr. Scott add to the charm of this book. I highly recommend Eric's adventures to all who want to revisit their childhood sense of wonder.

Author Deborah Frontiera received the following statements in a letter from Holley Linn, librarian at Gordon G. Barkell Elementary School, Hancock, MI:
"The children here have truly been enchanted by Eric and the Enchanted Leaf . . . We've had them waiting very impatiently for a turn at checking it out of the library. As luck would have it, it arrived here just as the second graders were beginning a study on insects, particularly ants. So it couldn't have been more timely for our kids."

I always thought I was good at communication until I read this book (text book really). I was particularly impressed by the examples of emails that on the surface look fine until the writer points out the loop holes. Despite its title this book comes in hand for many situations well outside business. I have also used my newly acquired skills in academic, political and philanthropic forums and received very positive feedback from colleagues who noticed a change. Buy this book.

I use this book for my primary text in a Business and Professional Communication class that I teach. The students like how the book is organized; I appreciate the examples that we can use in class for discussion.

Beyond that, the AIDA approach to business writing is clear and easy to use once students get the hang of it. My students' major project is to work with an organization in solving a communication problem, they are responsible for writing memos and reports to both the client and me.

However, I guess that the biggest endorsement is the number of students who do not resell this book at the end of the semester. I have had several tell me that this is one of the few books that they will take with them when they graduate because they view it as a good reference book.

This book is choc-full of useful techniques for good, solid business communication. The samples are well thought-out and are very true to life. However, the questions, especially the ethics questions do not have any answers provided. Even the instructor copy doesn't have any of the answers, so effectively it boils down to your opinions and whether or not you can defend them. Yee Hah, just like real life.

The Family Registry is the most useful tool for gathering and maintaining household information. I keep everything - manuals, warranties, receipts, landscape drawings, system diagrams, everything - in mine. The Registry's forms serve as an excellent guide for cataloging all my home and garden inventory, especially those "unseen" items that one never thinks about until there is an immediate, unusual sudden need. All these bits of information are available to me in one convenient notebook system, and the packaging is so attractive that I keep mine in the living room bookcase. - Lynn Webber - retired RN / Master Gardener / housewife

I cherish household items that are both practical and beautiful. That is why I purchased Family Registry for my home library. Everything I need to know about my home and it's assets are catalogued within the pages of this beautiful and comprehensive resource.

I valued my Family Registry so much, I purchase 4 more sets for my family as Christmas gifts last year and everyone loved their Family Registry as much as me. Family Registry is the perfect home companion - no home should be without one!

"My daughter recently got married and I tried to find something unique and different to give to her and her future husband that also would be a practical gift, not like a toaster. A friend told me about the Family Registry. When I looked at it I new that this would be a perfect gift for them, because my son-in-law is an engineer and he loves everything to fit into a neat place. We always make fun all of his list and charts. They were both excited about the gift, especially my son-in-law. He felt like we appreciated his organizational skills and were helping them start their life together with everything in place. Thank you." Mrs. A. Jones, Psychologist, Michigan

I wholeheartedly recommend Family Registry. Last summer my mom died after a sudden illness, and we were all so grateful that she had left us a precise written record of her assets, what to give to whom, her funeral arrangements, and other details. That by itself was a great gift to all of us! I decided to do the same for my family. But since I am disorganized, with records and files all over the place, I urgently needed the kind of structure I found in Family Registry. working wiht this system was painless--in fact, ti was actually fun! Best of all, I now have a comprehensive record of everything I own and what i want to do with my possessions, all in one place. And it's not just for the future--this record comes in handy right now for lots of things, including taxes. I recently gave my daughter a Family Registry Asset Preservation System of ehr own as a wedding gift, and made sure my elderly relatives have theirs too.

I hope everyone who is not as super-organized as my mom will not wait till the last minute to get their affairs in order--when it might even be too late--and will use this wonderful and unique system. I've never seen anything like it--and I have looked! I also want to express my appreciation to the authors for the thought and caring they put into the creaton of this program and materials. If I could give them more than 5 stars I would! Every family should have the Family Registry!

The authors demystify the art of finance and suggest pragmatic approaches and solutions for every day capital uses and needs. This attractive and attractively priced book is written in an innovative way, making it a useful quick desktop reference as well as an MBA level finance text. The glossary by itself is worth the price of the book. How astounding that the authors are both French, yet write with more clarity in English than any American finance writer I have read of late! ‚Finance for Executives' is invaluable for everybody who needs to analyse companies and wants to know whether investment, financing or business decisions create value. It is written very clearly and is therefore easy to understand. It offers plenty of practically relevant examples, mostly based on one company which is being analysed in its different aspects throughout the whole book. Moreover, every chapter finishes with review problems (including solutions) and useful references. Some chapters offer appendices with mathematical proofs or additional in-depth analysis. - You will not be satisfied with this book if you are looking for a scientific, theoretical text. However, your expectations will be exceeded if you are a practitioner who wants to make an impact in a consulting or investment banking environment. - What does make this book so special? After working through it, you will be able to easily put into practice what you read.

This is a book that I just couldn't put down. Not only for the reason that it's written by a pastor I've come to know and highly respect over the years, but because it clearly shares how the Word of God remains fresh each time we read it. Pastor White brings to life the key aspects of each of the 10 commandments and draws Christians to a closer relationship in their daily walk. Read it and pass it on to a friend.

As a Pastor I am constantly looking for help in preaching and teaching the Bible, Author and Pastor Tim White has put together a book that will be a great resource for any pastor or serious Bible student. It is only 105 pages long, so to me that makes it attractive as it gets right to the point. "Free to Love" is easy to read and full of ways we can apply the Ten Commandments to everyday life, not in legalistic ways , but filtered through the eyes of the Lord Jesus.

As you read this book you can tell it was written by one who loves the Word of God. This book puts the Old Testament commandements into perspective in today's world. The commandements are as relevant today as they ever were and the author does a tremendous job illustrating this point. Too many relegate the Old Testament as not being as relevant as the New Testament, which is not true. The author very adeptly points out the immutability of God. I highly recommend this book for both the mature Christian and those new to the faith.

I read it more than once to make sure all of the truth held in its pages saturated my mind and my heart. I would recommend it as a must read!!!!

I loved this book. He seemed genuine and really care the fate of the Hong Kong Chinese.

Regardless of the so-called hidden agenda behind the rush to the democracy before the handover, the truth was back then none of the patten's predecessors had the political reforms in agenda. They were all diplomats and they only really concerned to kowtowing Beijing. Patten was a politican and he tried to work and fight for the benefits on behalf of HIS constituents i.e. people of Hong Kong. He got unfairly smeared by Beijing in return just because the truth hurts.

The bottom line was Chris Patten did leave a legacy way better than Tung che-hwa, the chief executive of Hong Kong SAR (Special Administrative Region-not the disease) could ever dream of. What an irony it was when the white Anglo-Saxon master who make Hong Kong prosperous and better than the mainland Chinese themselves.

When the Union Jack lowered the last time on June 30, 1997, it symbolized not only the beginning of the fall of Hong Kong, but also spell the death of Hong Kong. Hong Kong-the beacon and the crown jewel of what a Chinese society ought to be back then ceased to exist.

After reading the online review of Theroux's Kowloon Tong (a fictional account of the 1997 Handover of Hong Kong), I am surprised to find that only one customer have contributed a review to Dimbleby's marvelous work on the historical events. Dimbleby provided an excellent and comprehensive account of the political events that led to the signing of the 1984 Sino-British agreement, the arrival of Chris Patten, the introduction of legislative reform, and the eventual derailment of the democratic movement by the Communist Chinese Government. Dimbleby also tell the stories of several Hong Kong citizens and their views of the Handover. Being a native of Hong Kong who have spent my last 12 years in the States, Dimbleby's book brought me up-to-date on the big political stride taken by and the obstacles awaiting the people of Hong Kong.

This is definitely a good book.

This book is one of the best books about the history and political development of HK. It not only gives a brief but interesting historical outline at the beginning of the book, it also traces the development of HK politics. What the governors before Chris Patten did and what have been changed since the arrival of Patten. It also outlines lots of power struggles between the governor and the ministers in Britain and how Patten dealt with them. For sure the relations between the governor and the Prime Minister John Major is a key factor contributing to the "success" of the governor. Of course one would have no doubt about that the close relationship between the governor and the writer, Jonathan Dimbleby, who followed Patten to come to HK and spent several years with him, which does enable him to access some crucial but secret matters that are not easily accessed by other journalists. Being a HK citizen, reading the book enables me not just to know the past better but it also enriches me about the situations of HK at that time. Reading it is just like passing through the history once again, with all those political arguments between China and both Patten and Britain reappearing in real life. Another interesting thing about the book is that it also touches lots of the everyday lives of the ordinary people living in HK, how did they feel about the political arguments and what did they plan to do after the handover of China. This makes the book more lively. This book is definitely a book that students of history/Political Science/HK Studies should read.

Patten struggles for Hong Kong

Review Date: 2000-07-29
Jonathan Dimbleby's The Last Governor is a tour de force that gives the reader an insider's perspective into the tenure of Hong Kong's last colonial leader, Chris Patten. Dimbleby treats the reader to a narrative account of the trials and tribulations that Patten faced as he attempted to enact democratic reforms in Great Britain's last colonial jewel. Although one would undoubtedly expect the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to be vociferously opposed to any belated attempt by the British colonial authorities to bequeath a semblance of democracy on Hong Kong, Dimbleby makes the case that Patten's biggest enemies often came from within his own government. Dimbleby's revelations that selected British cabinet and Foreign Office officials shamelessly sought to downgrade the importance of Hong Kong and sacrifice Patten's proposed reforms on the alter of commercial relations with the PRC, resulted in Dimbleby being investigated by the Foreign Office for possible receipt of secret intelligence materials. Dimbleby was cleared of these allegations, but the vast array of insider information that Dimbleby amassed for this book strengthens the strident arguments that Dimbleby advances. Only a handful of participants in The Last Governor emerge with their reputations unscathed. Hong Kong's local and international business elite is portrayed as willing supplicants in the PRC's efforts to scale back personal and political liberties after Hong Kong's reversion to PRC sovereignty, a position easily enforced by PRC threats to their commercial interests. Martin Lee and Emily Lau, two of Hong Kong's leading democracy advocates, are portrayed as actually weakening Patten's push for democratic reforms through their uncompromising approach. The various representatives of the PRC are painted as unbending ideologues with little appreciation of Hong Kong's way of life. Dimbleby is most critical of the British officials, past and present, who acted to either inadvertently or deliberately sabotage Patten's governorship. Most prominent on this list is Sir Percy Cradock, Great Britain's lead negotiator in the 1984 Joint Declaration and former Ambassador to the PRC. Cradock comes off as a modern-day Neville Chamberlain, willing to cut a bad deal with an unsavory power for the sake of diplomatic expediency. Cradock compounded this error by working both privately and publically to weaken Patten's political position and policies. Dimbleby also argues that the Cradock mentality had infected the entire Foreign Office and selected members of John Major's cabinet, who worked to undercut Patten and sell-out Hong Kong in favor of better commercial relations with the PRC. The greatest strength of The Last Governor is also its greatest weakness. While such open access to Patten gives this book the necessary dramatic propulsion, it also strikes the reader as serving as Patten's mouthpiece. While Dimbleby does downgrade Patten for underestimating the challenges he was to face as Governor, Dimbleby's portrayal of Patten as the lonely David fighting against the multi-headed Goliath seems to diminish the numerous allies Patten needed to help him accomplish the limited reforms he was able to enact. Dimbleby could have also delved deeper into the political rationale behind the PRC's bargaining position and policies regarding Hong Kong. The Last Governor is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in Hong Kong, Chinese, or British affairs and to readers interested in how bureaucratic politics affects international diplomacy. Dimbleby's prose is brisk and should easily captivate and entrance the reader. Keep in mind that this is not an academic tome, so Dimbleby's point of view is repeatedly expressed without reservation or apology.

Five (5) Star Rating . . . ISBN is 0-88415-753-9 . . . First Impressions:

As a quick reference guide, GLOBAL BUSINESS keeps its promise to "help every business professional understand how all these components fit together to create a truly global business."

Here's a well conceived and crafted collection of "lessons learned" by a savvy team of collaborators.

Among their "308 Tips" are timely tricks and traps to avoid when navigating the global business maze!

* Their profiles of effective international distributors and agents provide useful best practice benchmarks for setting realistic expectations. These tips were the highlights of three (3) sections on "Market Entry Strategies"

* Tip 288 focuses on the human factors blocking ongoing inter-cultural information exchanges. I was happy to find author Charles Handy's paradoxes cited in their coverage of managing "The Knowledge Explosion."

Handy's THE AGE OF PARADOX Synopsis: In an age of ... rapid change, one of the most brilliant and engaging thinkers of our day extends a guiding hand in the search for order . . . the author of THE AGE OF UNREASON proposes bold ideas for navigating through this brave new world . . . GLOBAL BUSINESS delivers a practical decision support framework to help its reader's rescue more order from the grasp of chaos!

* The book's back cover business management blurb on how to recognize scams and frauds also grabbed my attention! As a pioneer in Electronic Commerce information protection, I found their concise tips 109 and 110 with its "Red Flags" were right on target!

This book should be on the desktop of anyone considering the expansion of his or her business into international markets. Global Business manages to combine practical tips with the wisdom of seasoned professionals who have an obvious sensitivity to the complexities of cross cultural business communication and development.

As a desktop reference, Global Business is well organized. The reader can quickly find a topic of interest through the table of contents or through the well-conceptualized index. Once the topic is located, the reader finds a detailed, checklist-style set of tips. If you want to know how to pack goods for export, go to page 86; how to establish pricing policies go to page 77; how to create a NAFTA product go to page 53. The reader is encouraged to access the book at any point based on his or her particular interest or need.

Global Business is more than a desktop reference, however. Taken as a whole, the book is a great overall introduction to understanding the problem of expanding a business into worldwide markets. Though practical in its organization and style, it is comprehensive in its content and is equally as useful for the practitioner and the student of international business.

Global markets now offer wonderful opportunities for small and mid-sized firms. Unfortunately, these firms do not always have the expertise and know how to accomplish the complicated task of expanding into these markets. Global Business is particularly well suited for individuals in these companies endeavoring to take their companies global.

Koslow and Scarlett have provided a most useful guide to the new millennium of global business.

a very timely book. Lenovo, SAIC, Benq, TCL, CNOOC - they are all bidding for European or American firms. And they are right to do so. These deals will propel them on the forefront of international business.

Thoughtful, organized and impactful

Global Future is a world-class book - an excellent guide to global strategy. While the argument is at times very dense and tightly written, it is also very clearly and succinctly put together for corporate executives to follow. The authors understand the real world - the complexities and challenges firms face when they address global opportunities. The author's treatment of global issues is not just worth the reading, but a book you will want to keep within reach from your desk.

Timely and provocative
