I truly enjoyed reading Dr. Younkins' Capitalism and Commerce. It shed new and insightful light on many topics that I have been previously taught. Not until I read this book did I come to understand the extent to which I was indoctrinated with such a one-sided view in previous years. Since reading the book, I have begun to view topics such as taxation, antitrust law, public education, and the philosophy of natural law in a new way. I found Dr. Younkins' book very easy to read and understand. I have used it as a reference for other classes and papers I have written and intend to do so throughout the remainder my undergraduate years and hopefully into law school.

Capitalism and Commerce offers an insightful, straight forward, and clear description of how a capitalist society should function. From Labor Unions to taxation, Younkins provides an economic and philosophic perspective on a wide range of topics that allows the reader to learn from real examples. While addressing tough issues, the book itself is easy to read and perfect for anyone trying to understand and explore economic principles.

Dr. Younkins exposes to the world the truth behind the current United States entitlement system. The easy to read chapters discuss each aspect of a capitilistic system in its purest form. Each chapter builds on each other allowing the reader to discover the mirage of free enterprise in this country.
This is a very good book and Ed has been able to lubricate the previously dry subject of economics. Any person who believes that Americans live under a free enterprise system should read this book. If you believe that you are entitled to some economic aid from the "Government," read this book.

The problem nowadays with discourse on political and economic issues is that there is much confusion over the definition of terms. Two groups demand rights but they're in conflict because one group wants welfare rights while the other wants liberty rights. Whose claim for rights is legitimate? Well, that all depends on what is the definition of a right.

Younkins' wonderful contribution with this work is not only to demonstrate that words like `rights', `justice', and `dignity' have specific meanings, but from the view point that man prefers freedom over slavery, he eloquently lays out the ontological framework of a free society.

Today many would argue that there's a natural tension between `rights' and `justice' with a tendency for one to happen at the expense of the other. That is not true, according to Younkins. He argues that when these terms are properly understood within the context a free society, they not only fulfill their roles unfettered, they work symbiotically towards producing a happy society.

Younkins covers much in his work and in the process he clears the fog by defining the role of the law, government, corporations, education, etc. within a free society. Younkins book is so systematic, consistent and thorough that it can be used as a litmus test to measure the degree of freedom within a particular society.

My only criticism of this work (and it is very minor) is that though his intended audience are lay persons in philosophy, economics and political science, Younkins' language does get a bit recondite at times. But overall this is thoughtful and brilliant work from a fine scholar. Every person who cares and thinks about sustaining a free society must have this work included in their library.

This inspiring book is a must for all recruiters who understand the leverage power of online sourcing and networking.

As its subtitle suggests, The Virtual Handshake is all about interfacing with business and social contacts through the worldwide web. In my field (recruiting), the lines between business and social contacts blur since everyone I encounter might need either a new job or project, might know someone who does, or might be in a position to hire. Networking is not just about pressing flesh and passing business cards at a luncheon these days. There is a rapidly growing area of opportunity to meet people and make deals on the internet. However, please note that The Virtual Handshake does not merely expound the virtues of the internet or report results of deals closed and marriages made, the authors also make the technologies easy to understand and provide practical advice on how to use what's out there. Published in 2005, the book provides current information on various virtual options and their uses. The authors cover topic such as social software and services online; virtual clubs and associations; tips on managing the deluge of email; basics on blogging; effective use of email blasts without being perceived as a spammer; netiquette; privacy protection; and, of course, real-life examples of the use of the virtual medium. Easy to read and very useful, The Virtual Handshake is a primer for those of us who haven't been hip to the virtual world that's out there. It made me wonder if I've been living under a rock! The good news is it's not too late to learn, and this book will definitely help. I was so inspired by this book that I boldly went out there into the virtual world and set up my own blogsite!

How to make sense of social network technology? This book talks about technology as well as the human aspects of networking. There is nothing wrong in the description, but the authors don't have any viewpoint. They have just surveyed the area and written a bunch of chapters. I would like to be told what kind of technologies work and doesn't work. If it is too early to tell, I would like a really smart author tell me something surprising. Otherwise I don't want to waste my time.

If you haven't read anything on social networks and want a non-technical, very easy read, then this book is for you. Otherwise there is no value-add.

The world is changing and so is business. The Internet, and various "Web 2.0" technologies, for lack of a better (or even good) name, are rapidly becoming an integral part of business and life.

The Virtual Handshake doesn't attempt to get you entirely up to date -- that's impossible, but up to speed -- that's far more valuable.

If you don't have any trusted colleagues you've never met in person or maybe not even talked to over the phone, you need this book. Even if you've spent a quarter of a century online like I have, you need this book. I learned a lot, and still refer to this book often. (If your secretary reads your email to you and you dictate answers, I suggest you retire or read this book ASAP.- You need help catching up).

After reading The Virtual Handshake, and I strongly suggest you do, you'll understand the basics, importance, and success guidelines of social software. You'll be up to speed in perhaps the most critical area of business change in our lifetime. The CURRENT wave of the Internet, and probably more important than the original commercialization and popularization of the Internet.

Hey, what's more interesting, the Big Bang Theory or How Life Came About?? This is the "How Life Came About" part and you'll learn about things like virtual communities and social networking, but far more importantly,- you'll know what to do. Actual steps you should take --- and plenty of case studies to help you understand their importance. Guidelines to harness the power of these new whateveryoucallthem.

Hint: be yourself, act responsibly, and remember you are the same person both online and offline and don't forget it!

There is a lot of valuable information in this book. Plan to read it, enjoy it, and then study it. And plan on concrete benefits.

It's a rehash of common sense. Do not waste your time reading this book.

As an advisor, I wanted to know what I specifically needed to do and how in what sequence of steps. I wanted be effective with my all my efforts in meeting my vision of a great valuable practice. I did not want to spend the time thinking or sorting through all the various ways to build a practice. This book allowed me the luxury to only focus on mastering the skills he explains and teachs. I became confidant that Bowen's research on what works was captured within his strategies and tactics.

Just got a copy of this book. I have been reading Bowen's articles in Financial Planning magazine for years. In Breaking Through he lays out everything in one place to help you create a top tier Wealth Management Firm focused on serving the affluent. Bowen's programs cost thousands of dollars - this book was a great way to learn some of the insights from his programs. It will cost you money if you don't buy it.

John has an in depth knowledge of the financial advisory business. He has been an advisor and has worked with thousands of advisors-from the independent RIA to the wirehouse broker and everyone in between-and has used his research to understand what steps are necessary to develop the type of business desired. This is measured not only in income desired, but also the quality life that you want to live and the time and effort put into the business to provide for both. I encourage you to not only read the book, but to implement the processes outlined.

I am about 3/4 of the way through at this point. It is a fantastic book with a lot of good information. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good methodology for network design. There is also a lot of good hints for things to keep in mind while designing the network.

This book is a very comprehensive reference source and working guide for 3G mobile networks. If you're only going to buy one book on the subject, this is it.

I purchased this book with the intent on gaining a further understanding of the network design process. I really didn't expect the book to give me as through an understanding of network design as what has turned out to be the case. Coming from the network support side this book has been a tremendous compliment to my support and logic in how traffic flows from A to B. I feel now that after having read the book which is an EASY READ that I have come away with enough knowledge to auctually design and implement a small to midsized company network. The authur does an outstanding job of presenting to the reader the many processes involved in through network design, network logic, and what exactly happens when your pc 1st boots and why it takes so long for the logon screen to appear "if this is the case on your network", and countless other topics. If you are just getting into network design or have been in the field and are a seasoned veteran I highly recommend that you add this book to your networking library.

Like the carpenter, the network designer does well to develop a plan before purchase. The title, Top-Down Network Design, is accurate because the author's key approach throughout the book is to consider what works best for the end user and meet the goals of a Request for Proposal. Priscilla Oppenheimer has presented a well structured textbook that covers every facet of networking in general with the intent of training the reader in the best practices of network design. The point of this book is to discourage going straight to product catalogs and picking out hardware when assigned a network project. Even if the customer is not given an RFP, the designer should present an overview of the project that includes the goals and how those goals will be measured.

The reader should have some basic knowledge of networking. However, this would make an excellent text book at a university or trade school since Oppenheimer covers all of the logical concepts and physical aspects of modern networking. The well read and experienced network engineer will find it a good review with a unique insight or tip sprinkled just often enough to make it worth the read. Except for the CCDP exam, the book is primarily a supplement to the student, but a must have reference for the consulting and design professional.

Oppenheimer gives well thought through, easy to read descriptions of technologies. For example, page 208 gives the most succinct explanation of how IPv6 works I have ever read. Another practical lesson is her definition of the "Heisenberg uncertainty principle" as "the act of observing something can alter what is observed." Consultants should be careful that their analysis doesn't become a problem in itself. Top-Down Network Design is a reference you will want to check yourself and those you hire.

Top-Down Network Design, Second Edition is both a new terrific book and still a terrific book. The original took a systems approach to designing a network which could provide the service the people paying for it expected, partly by getting them to clarify their expectations and needs. The new Second Edition does this, too, but it includes material relevant to the networks being implemented today, and they are very different networks than we saw even three or four years ago.

New technologies, such as VPNs, VoIP, IPv6 as well as v4, Gigabit Ethernet and 10GigE, etc. are covered as part of a networking solution, not just as cool and sexy technologies to be rolled out for that reason. Likewise, new business emphases like reliability, redundancy, resiliency (which are not the same thing), security, and even survivability are addressed. Not all new technologies will help solve these problems, and, more often than not, they aren't even necessary. Thoughtful planning is far more important, and working with the network as it is now, toward what it is desired to become, is how you can really solve these problems.

I think one of the greatest techniques you can learn from TDND, 2e is to characterize the flows of traffic on the network. Priscilla Oppenheimer gives several examples of developing such analyses in a variety of situations - campus networks, WANs, a design testing scenario, and so forth. The Appendix with workstation bootup traffic information is especially helpful - the only thing I would have liked to see that I didn't was a little more detail on the contents of the various packets involved, but it is an Appendix, and using a sniffer will let you see them for yourself.

I have both the original and the new Second Edition - and getting the new one is definitely worth it. Networking has changed, and this book will help you handle the new material.

Oni Vitandham shares more tragedy than triumph in her autobiographical story On the Wings of a White Horse. While she concludes by sharing the humanitarian efforts she is making to prevent atrocities like those in her past from being repeated, she clearly shows us the permanent scars war leaves in the minds of those who survive. It is through spare, first-person narratives, that readers wander with her as a lost child alone in war torn Cambodia and Vietnam. She is destined to repeatedly witness horrific violence first hand until providence sees her to America. But, once there, her struggle does not end. Abuse, neglect, and isolation follow her every step. Yet Oni perseveres, eventually finding a path to healing after a serendipitous meeting. She concludes her story with a synopsis of historical events in Cambodia. But, what is most important to her story is what she doesn't share. While she is very open about events, the reader must dig into the context of each chapter to realize and examine the emotional war Oni is waging with herself and her environment at every step.

An amazing book by an amazing woman. I had to read this book for a class in school and thought it would just be another boring school book. Boy was I wrong. I couldnt put it down, wondering what was going to happen next. it is an amazing story. I feel ignorant not knowing how horrible the conditions were in Cambodia. This book has changed me and it will change you.

This book entirely contains self-motivation as well as self-will. I knew a little about the Khmer Rouge prior to reading this book. But has not yet fully comprehended on the horrific happenings that one human can inflict upon another. I was amazed at how much the author has illustrated such a tragic reflecting back to her childhood. She talked about how the Khmer Rouge genocide confiscated her innocent childhood. Every sentence brings the reader into the story. The author, Oni Vitandham, spoke in my Humanities class this morning and utilized many empowering words about her accumulated strength from all the things that she's experienced and endured. I am in awe of her strength and education to become the strong being that she is today and educate a generation of young people who has no clue what the Khmer Rouge genocide was about. She is living proof that one person can definitely change the world.

Man's inhumanity to man never ceases to amaze me. The story is at once tragic then hopeful, despairing then spiritual. Oni has captured the essence of one of the 20th century's worst travesties in a simple almost childlike manner. Perhaps not brilliantly written, it is brilliantly told. This is the first Killing Fields book I've read (avoided for obvious reasons of personal discomfort, although I've read books on Armenian genocide, Holocaust and Dharfur) and I will now join those who work to build on the strengths of Cambodia and its people. I especially appreciated the brief history of Cambodia at the end of the book, and the sweet and simple photos. I felt this strong sense of peace at the end of reading, as if in fact Oni will achieve her goals and be part of a larger vital improvement for the lives of so many Khmer, both in America and in Cambodia.

"And a child shall lead them" -- Oni Vitandham begins her real life story as a child, of resilience and survival surrounded by constant death, destruction, danger, and unimaginable horror. Although dealing with a conflict over 30 years removed, this book could not have arrived at a more poignant time. At its core, the political themes are as relevant today as they were then in stemming the flow of innocent blood.

This book should further resonate with recently honed political sensibilities (per Abu Graib, Iraq, etc) and serve as inspiration to us all not only as citizens but as human beings to stand up for justice and equality (even in the face of dire political rhetoric).

Oni's story reminds us how truly blessed we all are and of our universal responsibility to prevent these horrors from re-occurring.

This book is a must have for people starting a business. I haven't entered ANY business venture without first consulting with this book. I also had the wonderful opportunity to learn with Ed Rogoff himself, he is a very knowledgeable, straight-forward man, and his book is 100% reflective of his real life traits and experience. Great Job Ed!

Ed Rogoff gives an in depth but workable plan for developing a new business. "Bankable Business Plans" gives you what you need to go from your initial idea to your financial source. Examples, forms and step-by-step instructions are included in this comprehensive book. This book is a must for business owners of any size business.

Chapter 10 in this book opened my eyes to a publication produced each year by the Risk Management Association (RMA). It's called the "Annual Statement Studies - Financial Ratio Benchmarks" and is a compilation of information supplied by member banking institutions that get their information from small business loan applicants. The author of Bankable BPs says a sound business plan must favorably compare to the information in the RMA publication, or it probably will not help the loan applicant get her funds.

I recommend after reading Bankable BPs that anyone creating a business plan will do themselves a favor by examining the RMA publication to use as a guide for creating meticulous financial projections included in their business plan. Don't write the business plan first, and then compare it to the RMA publication figures. Instead start with the figures and then write the business plan.

Another similar (but not as good) publication you might want to look at is called "Financial Studies of Small Business" written by Financial Research Associates.

Besides the impressive information contained in Chapter 10 of Bankable BPs, I thought the book was a great read on the subject of putting together a business plan. The author is an associate professor at one of the CUNY schools in New York. I would have liked the book better if he had not emphasized that a business plan was a tool to help raise capital. But he does point out that a business plan is an important tool for running a small business, too.

The author listed 10 action steps necessary to create a business plan:

1. Define the business
2. Figure out initial needs
3. Outline how the business expects to make money (business model)
4. Perform market research (study industry, competitors, and potential customers)
5. Write a marketing plan
6. Describe sales effort as it relates to marketing
7. Systematize operations & team building
8. Decide on capital requirements
9. Put together pro forma financials
10. Write the business plan in an acceptable format

I'm pretty sure the author felt the action steps were meant to be done in the above order. I tend to agree with the list of action steps, but not the particular order. I think #8 and #2 should be sequenced just after #9. I find it hard to believe it is possible to decide on capital resources BEFORE you have figured out the pro forma financials. And, without knowing the capital resources needed, it seems to me it is hard to determine what the initial needs of the business will be.

All in all, this was a very informative books and I am sure it will be a very helpful book to anyone who has to put together a business plan. 5 stars!

This book is terrific because it directly addresses the issue that probably undermines more business plans than any other: unrealistic assumptions. After 20 years as a banker and financial advisor to growth companies, both large and small, I believe that professional equity investors judge entrepreneurs by their ideas, their ability, and the reasonableness of their assumptions. Aggressive business plan assumptions raise significant doubts in the minds of investors, who don't just want 25% IRRs but want 25% IRRs that are achievable. Rogoff wisely advises entrepreneurs to ground their plans in reality, using solid industry data and benchmarking techniques. He teaches you to think like an investor or banker before writing your plan. Very solid advice. A must-read before going to market with your plan.

This book was what got me started on the right track when I had a great idea and didn't know what to do next. Inventor's always need inspiration and this book did it for me.

This is one of the most useful books I've read to date on bringing a product to market. It covers all the basics and then some. I have recommended it to all my friends!

People may joke that Tamara Monosoff became a millionaire with the help of suckers like me buying her book. THAT IS NOT THE CASE! She is an extremely intelligent and fascinating woman. If you cannot launch your own business after reading her book, it is in no way Tamara's fault. I am amazed at how much time and effort she obviously devoted to writing this book. Just when I would ask myself a question regarding something she wrote, she was answering it in the very next sentence. The book is FULL of helpful examples, websites, and addresses. I would STRONGLY recommend this book to anyone.

This book is well worth the money. Short and sweet review and gets to the point now go buy this book!

I thought the first thing I needed to do with my invention was make a prototype. NO! Tamera says the first thing I need to do is get a spiral notebook and keep a hand-written ledger of everything I do, chronologically, to protect myself in court. I NEVER would have thought of that.

She explains step by step what to do next and HOW to do it: how to do market research, patent research, etc. But most of all, she gets right to the meat of everything. Tamera does not fill up her pages with fluff to make a dreary fat book. She guides us through the steps and all the way, she recounts how one particular mom handled these steps. She also puts in so many other examples from other mom inventors along the way.

It seems so easy, and she is inspiring. When I was a stay home mom, I felt overwhelmed, and out of touch with the professional world. Husbands and family aren't always necessarily supportive. Tamera says don't let any of that hold you back: you are much smarter than you think, so get that idea to market!

I recently acquired my Network+ certification thanks to this book. It's very well written and does a good job explaining just about everything you need to know.

My only qualm is that Token Ring coverage is a bit light as I was very surprised to find a lot of questions about Token Ring on the exam. While I had enough knowledge to get through most of them, there were some that the book did not cover in this particular topic. You probably won't need another resource for it, just be sure not to underestimate token ring when you take the exam.

Finally, be sure to take the test at the end of the book. This is probably the closest test of the bunch (CD exams with $50 upgrade and all) to assess your ability to pass the exam.

I just got back from taking the exam and got a 833/900 which yeilds a 92%! I was on a timed deadline for the exam as my voucher was about to expire. I read this book front and back and feel Ive gotten the grade because I did.

The best part of this book was the last 72 test questions it gave. I did these right before I had the exam and they did a great job preparing me for what I was about to see.

Get this book!

Passed the Network + exam, this is the only book you will need. Make sure you read the book front to back, I read it twice.

I'll get right to it and list the good and bad about this book:

Strengths
1. The book is an excellent exam prep tool, it is organized and laid out with great focus on fulfilling the exam objectives and ensuring the reader is well-prepared. Includes some handy exam tips on the types of questions which you can expect in the exam.
2. It has a very useful "Fast Facts" section at the back which summarizes a lot of useful information concisely, good resource for revising for the exam and for memorizing facts.
3. Has a very good section devoted entirely to TCP/IP.
4. Includes better-than-average testing software which has harder questions.

Weaknesses
1. Considering this is not an 'introduction to networking' book, this may not be a big deal, but this book is definitely not a book for beginners, some background in IT and networking is required to make full use of this book. Many times a new term or abbreviation is used without prior explanation of what it means.
2. Although it was published in 2002, I found some of the information in the book a little outdated. For example I found the OS section to cover a bit too much on the older Windows 98/Me than I like. This maybe a reflection of the fact that the exam covers these 'older' OS too, but I'd like it if it has a more current feel. Also some of the hardware recommendations given in the book feels like it was made back in 1999!

All in all, an excellent tool to help you pass your Network+ exam. I know it helped me :)

Excellent, excellent book. This was my main study material for the Net+ exam and it didn't fail me. Like another review noted, read the Fast Facts! Memorize them, get a solid understanding of various environments with different OSs, and know how to troubleshoot networks (hands-on helps if you are new to this).

Definitely easy if you already started down the road of CompTIA certifications.

I highly recommend this book. A much needed look into part of the other side of the argument and another reason why you should research what your being told before taking a stance.

Klaus presents an excellent case against the anthropogenic global warming scam, from the viewpoint of an economist who, as a Czech who lived under Communism and is now the president of the Czech Republic, has seen propaganda and mind control before.
There are economic viewpoints presented that deserve reading whether you are an advocate of AGW or not. This is one of many counterpoints to the junk science currently prevalent.

I'd like to say that Dr. Klaus' book rang a very alarming bell with me. I believe he percieves the environmentalist' movement to be a nascent fascist world tyranny, and I believe him to be correct in that asessment. The world of the future, if they have their way, would be one that those who've seen "Soylent Green" would recognize, I'm sure. The lies and obfuscation and outright intimidation the Greens use in pursuit of their agenda is reminiscent of the "brown shirts" of early Naziism. Dr. Klaus very clearly shows this in his book, and indicates with commendable brevity and succinctness why they can't be right scientifically and economically; and how one must perceive the claims they make through the lens of clear-thinking reason in order to marshall an effective resistance to the alarmism and scare tactics they use against those who would speak truth to power. I heartily recommend this book.

If you have received most of your information about global warming from the popular media, you will be very surprised or even shocked by the information Klaus provides. The existence of so many scientific and economic reasons to doubt the conclusions of the climate alarmists and reject their efforts to control or even "un-develop" modern societies is never publicly discussed. Klaus catalogs these reasons.

The introduction quotes Professor Richard S. Lindzen of MIT:

"Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early twenty-first century's developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally averaged temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and, on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer projections combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a roll-back of the industrial age."

You should read this book.

The book is full of proves about the deception of global warming but be careful when reading this book because your friends won't want to hear about it. Otherwise, they will want to destroy your opinion.
However, it's the only way we still have to fight against this kind of people.

I was given this book as a gift from my son. I read it on an airplane and laughed and cried so much that at the end of the flight, the man sitting next to me said, "you are quite an emotional lady!" I bought a copy of this book for the lady that helped me when I got stranded when the flight was delayed a day. She read one of the stories in it while I was changing clothes and I found her in tears when I returned. It's a great feel-good book.

In this collection of stories from and about mothers, there is something for everyone. Whether you need to be inspired, comforted, or amused, whether if you are looking for a laugh or a cry you can find a story for your mood. The Chicken Soup authors always know how to pick a collection of stories that truly brings the subject to light, a tear to your eye, and a smile to your lips! This time, what a worthy topic: mothers. As a positive psychologist in private practice I certainly know the powerful and permanent importance of our mothers in all of our lives!

I CAN NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! Some real tear jerkers too. A must for all moms.

my family got this as a gift about 8 years ago. I don't remember much about it but I remember the stories about the mother losing her son during a skiing accident, the girl who bought her mom bobby pins for her birthday and the story where they're celebrating a grandmother's birthday and she dies at the end of the party after seeing her entire family at the celebration.
