they deserve, except, of course, for THE CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, the
posthumous novel published a dozen years ago by LSU Press. Too bad, as
sometimes one reads a novel such as WHERE THE RIVER BENDS and feels it's not
going to get the coverage it deserves because of the size of its publisher
(SMU Press).
But this book ranks with Philip Roth's DYING ANIMAL and the new novel
PRAGUE, which I have just read, as well
as EMPIRE FALLS by Russo--which, by
the way, I do not regard as a "regional novel" even though it is all about
Maine.
Nor do I regard WHERE THE RIVER BENDS as a regional novel, even
though it is all about Texas. Novels with hefty themes
and universal
characters transcend their setting. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool New Englander,
and I loved this book. Let's
hope the wider public takes notice of it. -- A
reader from Arlington, Vermont.

i happend to be a honors student in art school no drugs or alchol and recovering frm bulima when my father intended to keep me from school by trying to tell a doctor iwas ill.despite he was told to leave me alone .. the next fifteen years of my life were draged into hospitals on lies and hysteria. i was subject to for no reason .. ect. and drugs and i had nt even suffered depression i was a higly educated and adjsuted happy person till my father began to do this.. he admitted this to but not to doctors my father was a md so it was easy to get away with this . my fahter was also a food aholic and gamblerand sick.. see a movie called terror in the family it goes into the lies parents tell of children and who realy is the sick person...
my life was destroyed by these places and i saw first hand what goes on and parents who realy need the places not kids who ar exposed to sick families dysfunction who are basicly reacting to an illness.....
they realy need to have the parents admitted along side the kid id they do this ...
i was kept sick for 115 years and negelcted of anything i said that would have saved me . as a reslut my life suffered ill from truama.... i saved my own life when i escaped this cycle of doctors looking for insurance. butthe effects of damge it left on my life eventuly despite i live about four to five years very happy super healty like i was before this happened i will now die from thethings that were done to me inthe years i was [mistreated] by this system.....

Interesting Book for EnterpreneursReview Date: 2004-11-02
This book is unusual because it's written by a person who created a landscaping company -- not a high-powered Fortune 500 CEO. That's not to say Mr. Grunder's a slouch! He's got a university degree majoring in business to back him.
Mr. Grunder's nine super simple steps to entrepreneurial success are not totally revolutionary to anyone who has spent time studying the topic of being an enterprenaur.
Mr. Grunder brings a combination of motivational encouragement and simple down home truths that can help a person to be a better entrepreneur and business person.
For instance, the Chapter "Get Paid to Learn" suggests that a budding entrepreneur should spend some time working in the field of their chosen passion to both learn the ropes and determine if their passion is truly lifelong. That's a good idea, but a fairly commonly understood one.
Chapter "Ask Questions" seemes to be the most important chapter. Mr. Grunder asserts that we should never be afraid to ask questions, gain knowledge and learn best practices from our mentors and competitors. Excellent advice.
Mr. Grunder even offers a free critique. Just fill out the form in the back of the book and mail it in for some free feedback from the author. Beware, you may find yourself mentioned in his next book!
This is a good read for entrepreneurs who need to revisit the basics and build up their motivation and courage.

How Far Would You Go to Rescue a Loved One?Review Date: 2008-12-16
That's one of the primary questions author J.A. Leary raises in his new book, The Angel Hunter. Most medical experts chalk up those bursts of extraordinary strength to a momentary rush of adrenalin. However, the effects of the so-called `fight or flight instinct' are short-lived, lasting long enough to remove you from the dangerous situation. But Leary explores what happens when people need more than that one-time surge of super hero strength to save those they love the most.
A nail-biting saga of a mother's unwavering devotion for her twin infants, The Angel Hunter probes the depths of love, bravery, and family bonds. The novel's heroine, Victoria Hunter, is a recently widowed young mother mourning her husband's death. Then her world is shattered yet again when someone, or something, kidnaps her twin sons. The mysterious kidnapping catapults Victoria into a frightening and dangerous new reality. Her agony is magnified when everyone around her fears that she may have harmed or murdered her baby boys.
"We've all experienced rough times in our lives," says Leary. "Some of us have triumphed over enormous loss or heart-breaking tragedy, and it's truly a testament to the resiliency of the human soul. So for this story, I was interested in exploring what happens when you're shaken to the core of your very being. And that's what happens to Victoria."
While Victoria struggles to prove she's not to blame for her boys' bizarre disappearance, she begins unraveling a dark family secret. As she ruthlessly forges ahead in her quest to bring her boys home, Victoria must confront the painful and sinister truth about herself and her sons' destiny.
"To me, one of the most fascinating, universal questions we ask is whether a person can be inherently good or inherently evil," says Leary. "And that's a question that we've debated for centuries. Was Hitler born evil? What about Stalin--was he capable of goodness? And on the flip side, did Gandhi or Mother Teresa possess an innate goodness? Then if you want to take that another step, you have to wonder how goodness or evil might affect our ability to cope with a crisis, or face dangerous situations."
Although most us will hopefully never find ourselves running into a burning building to save our child, or trying to carry an injured spouse down a treacherous mountainside, we'd all like to believe that we could harness that super-human strength to save our loved ones.

This is One Talented StorytellerReview Date: 2008-09-08
Short chapters weave together the characters--Victoria and her babies, as well as her mother, the FBI agent investigating the disappearance of her twins, the priests embroiled with the history and goings on of the grotto, the doctor looking into the presumed case of postpartum depression to name a few. Leary's disciplined writing is rich in detail and feeling. The story moves forward quickly, laying out the details in a way that makes what is actually a bizarre tale highly believable.
Reading this novel was an interesting departure from a summer filled with memoirs and women's fiction. It was both creative and intelligent and J.A. Leary is clearly a talented novelist. I'm really looking forward to next book.

Makes you stop and think.Review Date: 2008-04-15
stop and think about some of it quite a bit. My comment is WOW! I
have done a lot of reading and am familiar with some of the books you
had mentioned. I also believe the premise that we only "reap what we
sow" in this world of ours. But now I have to go out and get hold of
a couple more so that I can answer some of the questions your book has
raised.
My hope for your book is three-fold. One, I hope everyone enjoyed it
as much as both my husband and I did, two, that it makes people stop and think about their beliefs, and their lives and the world we live in,
and three - that it's a fantastic seller!
Anyway, we both really enjoyed it, and have had a few conversations
about it. I really can't wait for The Tantalus Key.

Best Auction IntroductionReview Date: 2004-03-27
I used it for understanding how companies organize their e-procurement.In particular this book is among those few dealing with Covisint, which is a common auction platform for automotive brands.
It starts with very simple concepts and classifications of auctions and ends up with real examples. I would rather advise "The Auction-App" only for those who want to get in touch with B2B approach to auctions. It does really worth its price.
Too basic but full of examples and referencesReview Date: 2003-05-25
The biggest benefit of this book is lots of examples & reference. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the book is case studies, resources/reference. So you're already know how to run online acution business but just lack of information, this is it. If not, better look somewhere else.
I only recommend this book to people who know about online auction business but just don't have time to collect information themselves. This is an easy solution.

Shandler provides an unmatched wealth of insightReview Date: 2005-03-15
In his projections, Shandler includes a host of statistical measures that you won't find anywhere else, and they have led me to a lot of insights I wouldn't have had without the book. The highlight for me was the PQS pitching log, which turns a subjective look at starting pitcher performance into a valuable quantitative tool. I also enjoyed the essays that he and his staff put together, looking into the minutia of baseball performance.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain an edge in fantasy baseball or to anyone with an unsatisfied curiosity about predicting baseball players' stats.
Great tool and secret weapon for fantasy baseball beginners!Review Date: 2005-01-12
This book puts the mind at ease and also is a great read if you're getting into baseball and wanna understand the natural progression of talent and skill. Yes, it does come with an oh-so-handy spreadsheet and chart, but it does give you the tools needed to make educated choices and sleeper choices that are above "sleeper" quality.
Definitely a great tool to use and parlay come draft day. If anything you'll appreciate the number 26!

The shop eventually closed when we had to give up our location, and cancer claimed Mom's life. I have been feeling the urge to have a shop again lately, and wanted to re-read the book. Apparently I've lent it to someone who never returned it to me! Mom's copy was nowhere to be found either, so I ordered another copy. A small price to pay for the information and guidance imparted within.
