I must congratulate Ms. Windham on her excellent book "Dead Ahead". I think I must have read it more than three times by now. I am a consultant and my company is involved in web design and development. On many of my assignments, I relied on this book as a guide and many of her ideas have worked very well with my clients.

Dead Ahead covers the 'new rules' of web-based commerce, from using existing businesses and strategies to succeed to establishing recognition and associations via the internet. Important chapters on investing in the right technology and conducting e-business make for important insights on the rules and atmosphere of the web.

An *EXCELLENT* book, written in a very easy-to-read style, that puts the Internet revolution in perspective. If you are a confirmed 'nethead, then this book is not for you - it is only telling you what you already know. If you don't "get it", and/or you are sceptical about the net, then GET THIS BOOK. It has changed our lives and will continue to change it for some time to come. Chuck uses real examples from real companies and people to drive home his points. Some of the links need to be updated on his website, but other than that, I highly recommend this. A good companion read would be James Martin's "Cybercorp"

Sound, detailed, helpful at all levels. Get this one.

In a domain positively viscous with lame literature, this book doesn't have any serious competition. It's very helpful at all levels, but its witty and humane approach is particularly good for business people moving onto the Web for the first time. Martin gives sound, detailed explanations of Web advertising, branding, business planning and building an on-line community by using the actual experiences of Net companies that are building today's new Internet economy

Good book detailing realitites and possibilities of the net!

If you've been awake and actively using the net over the past few years, you probably already know just about everything in this book. Martin has very good insight into what the web can really be...beyond all the technology hoopla, building virtual communities, supplying appropriate content, making a corporate web site that is actually useful to consumers, etc.. A GREAT read for those trying to make sense of the web, understand how people use the web, and see how other companies have created successful enterprises or applications integrating the internet. The copy I got had some duplicate/missing pages in the introduction of the book.

This book is a "must read" for all company owners and managers involved in the corporate planning process. The Digital Estate digs into the successes and failures of pure on-line businesses and electronic efforts of other companies to define the principals of doing business today. This is not a "technology book" and is not targeted for "net heads" or persons already in the Internet business. It is a business book for executives that contrasts the "old way" and new methods that are transforming business thinking. It is a book for business heads that need a grounding in business on the Internet. Written in a clear and concise manner, sans hype and jargon, it is engrossing, clever and insightful. I can not over emphasize the importance of this book to all business executives.

This book is not for beginners, and contrary to the reputation of O'Reilly press, this is not for experts.

The book uses a simple way to discribe many cases of things going bad. But it stays on the superficial layer of the problems.

The paradigm it uses is describe the problem, ways to prevent it, and how to get off the hook. This may seem very tempting to read because of the easy way to analyse the content of the cases. I like the 3 step aproach, but I didn't see and substance of the way she explained and the conjectures of details each process entails.

The book in general is a simpleton... and its boring.

Doing eBay Right

I was unable to find something I really needed from my usual sources, and turned to eBay for help. Sure enough, there it was! I was an eBay virgin, unsure and feeling very vulnerable. Should I try it?
This is exactly the point where "Don't Get Burned on eBay" comes in handy. Reading this book was like finding a good friend and a compass while wandering lost in the wilderness. I started out marking the impor-
tant points I came across but soon gave that up since there wasn't a lot that I didn't feel like underlining. It's crammed full of useful information.
One aspect that doesn't get enough play for the prospective reader in
my opinion is that the book not only tells you how to avoid the scams
and frauds, it also tells a newcomer how to buy and sell with the legiti-
mate people and do it right the first time. To me as a newbie, that was
just as important. And even if you read this and never do an eBay trans-
action, you will have likely learned something about mail-ordering from
anyone. This is a good reference that I will keep in my library.

A great resource for new and experienced eBayers alike.

I've been using eBay since 1999 as both a buyer and a seller. I was amazed at the amount of things I learned from this book. The policies at both eBay and PayPal have been updated significantly over time, and I'm sure like many other people, I was not aware of many of the changes. From tips on insurance and shipping to information on how to block and cancel bids, this book is valuable to any eBay seller. It also provides tons of information for buyers and sellers on how to avoid common scams associated with eBay. For example, I didn't realize that some people would actually switch a new item for an old and try to claim a return. I also didn't realize that eBay flat-out warns against using Western Union - and that even money orders are not secure in an age of easy counterfeiting.

The book is also filled with real stories of eBay snafus which clearly illustrate the author's points. In addition, the author's sense of humor makes the book a pleasure to read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is active in eBay - even if you don't read it cover-to-cover, it would act as a great reference guide.

Worth Ten Times the Price

This book should be mandatory reading for every person who buys OR sells on eBay. Both sides need to understand their rights and responsibilities clearly, and understand what exactly to do when things go wrong. In addition, both sides need to know common scams, common problems, the ins and outs of insurance and shipping, and common payment issues. This book covers every important issue clearly and concisely. EBay should give a copy to every new user, and give them a quiz before letting them bid or sell.

In addition to being clear, the author has a sense of humor, which makes this not only informative, but entertaining as well. The chapter layout makes it useful as a reference tool, to which the reader can turn when she has a question. The reader should read the whole book once, but afterwards, it is easily used to refer back to for specific questions or occurrences.

I'm a librarian in a university library, and I evaluate books all the time. For its purpose, this is one of the clearest and best I've seen.

Takes the fear out of eBay

Whether you've been using eBay for years or have been afraid to try it, lest you be ripped off, this book is an invaluable tool. Unlike other books that deal with online subjects, it's actually fun to read. The wit makes these tips and tales very easy to absorb and remember while bolstering your eBay confidence and savvy.

I've been using eBay since 1998 and I still picked up dozens of new things and now understand some of the more esoteric features of the site. When I lent the book to my mom, who has shyed from the site because she felt it was too risky, she proudly made two purchases using only the book as a guide. I wish all DIY and instruction style books were this much fun to read, I'd know how to do a lot more things if they were.

The book is 6 years old, yet the topics covered here is still useful for any entrepreneur to get $$ from venture capitals (VC):

1.Borrow $$ from friends/relatives to build a prototype
2.Beta test this on large and small firms, to build up clients
3.Build a better product/service based upon their feedbacks
4.Write a concise business plan with killer PowerPoint slides
5.Get the insider VC to arrange meetings
6.Answer intelligently on any VC concerns
7.Get the $$$, start the firm
8.Grow the firm for 3-5 years with track records
9.IPO and make Billion$$$

Sounds like a great formula! But this is 2007, VC is not the only game in town. They are Private Equity, Hedge Funds, Debt Financing, many other avenues to get $$$. Rob Ryan, are you contacting them?

Very informative and through!

Rob have wrote a book that should have been use during the crazy internet start- up era. Maybe all those companies would be thriving if they have gone through Rob's boot camp. Ok maybe not all of them but I feel that 80% of the dot com companies may be still existence.

I am still working on my hi-tech company but I have not been able to because they are not up to my standards. I got good ideas but I am just not feeling ready to go solict for funding just yet.

But anyway this is a great book! Rob gives a lot of good information that you would normally pay big money for a consultant to tell you the same thing!!

...is that it's not out in paperback so that I can buy 50 copies and give them out to people to show them why I babble on about it. Rob Ryan's "Entrepreneur America" is the *single most practical* book about entrepreneurship you will find on the market today.

Rob founded Ascend, and he tells you exactly how he did it. And even though Ascend was a pure technology play, his lessons are broad enough that they can be applied to non-technical inspirations as well.

Kudos also go here to Phaedra Hise. She has captured the voice, verve and essence of Rob Ryan and got him down cold on paper. Quite an achievement.

Ever since my husband and I started our business about two years ago, we are constantly in search of good books on small business management. Having read many of the books out there, Tom's is by far the best of its kind! Tom walks you through the life cycle of a small business, alerting you to the possible pitfalls and giving you advice along the way. Almost the entire book has been directly applicable to our small business, and has steered us in the right direction many times. Whether it's financial management, IRS questions or employees problems, Tom's book can help advise almost any small business owner today. Thanks, Tom!

This book was written by someone who understands the real world of corporate America: the world of the cubicles! You will not learn the lessons in this book from corporate trainers. These witty, often hilarious, bits of wisdom come from the core of cube city. Those who have been there will read this book and think: Why didn't I have this when I first started to work? Those who have not been there need to read it to understand what it's really like to be one of the folks who do the work in corporations. A great read!

Judging by the cover, LIGHTS, CUBICLE, ACTION! appears to be yet another Dilbertesque comic book making light of the corporate world. Appearances in this case would be very deceiving. A quick perusal of its pages reveals the truth behind corporate rhetoric, unvarnished by any gloss or glamour. Instead, the wisdom offered is hard hitting, intensely critical and remarkable insightful. Indeed, its rather scathing evaluation of the cubeville reveals the harsh truths of cube dwelling that your boss would like you to forget.

A.A. Cantor captures the brutal heart of corporate America in every page. Occasionally amusing, always astute, each page deftly reveals the ruthlessness of business and the keys to survival. Moreover, LIGHTS, CUBICLE, ACTION! offers far more than the cheesy optimism of teamwork and chasing the cheese characteristic of most books within this genre. A must read for all cube dwellers, LIGHTS, CUBICLE, ACTION! comes very highly recommended.

Everyone likes their own ideas and everyone believes that their own ideas are fool-proof. There's no way to check and grind your idea/business plan before going to actual VCs. Till now the only way to analyze your idea was by going through the 3Fs (Famliy, Friends and Fools).
Here is where 'The New Business Road Test' comes in as a savior. This book has all the ideas/ procedures/ questions/ & guidelines to review and grill your idea to perfection before plunging into the real venture. There are many books out there to tell you HOW to write a business plan, but none to actually analyze your business plan.
The presentation of the book is quite simple to understand and refer to in future. The 'Seven Domain Analysis' diagram really makes it simple to review any idea/plan and term it as feasible or not-feasible.
I read the book before going into my first venture and it made me look at my business plan in a whole different way. I was not only able to identify the loop holes but also the ways i could improve my business plans. Even today while I am lookin at a new venture, I find myself always going back and refering to this book.
Once Read, this book will make a place in your entrepreneurial life. This is a must-read book for entrepreneurs as well as VC aspirants.

This is a "can't put it down" read with something for everyone. There is the husband/father, Scott, dealing with the responsibilities of his families farm, his wifes illness, and raising two teenagers alone. The Grandmother, Catherine, with her own losses and bitterness, and Celeste, a single woman with a promising career, and yet still searching. The teenagers in the story, Tawnya and Ty,are working thru real issues that face teens today. This is a book that most anyone at any stage in life, from teen to grandparent, would enjoy and find relevant. There is such a message of hope and truth woven throughout the story! What a great book. I wish Julie Eller much success! And I hope there are more stories to come from this author.

"A New Promise" is a beautiful tale of forgiveness and hope for a family shattered by sickness. This novel portrays the journey of each family member as they deal with the fear and despair that comes from dealing with a mother/wife stricken with Huntingtons disease.

Julie Eller invites her readers to cheer, cry, and laugh right along with the Parnell family as they struggle to find meaning and faith in an otherwise hopeless situation. Julie's words serve as a flashlight shining the truth of God's comfort and peace in dark times, and is an inspiration to all.

If you're looking for a good read with realistic, three-dimensional characters that takes place in the heart of a beautiful farmland, look no further. "A New Promise" is just for you.

Promises, promises. Everybody knows what a promise is and has probably made hundreds of them throughout their lifetime. When you get married, in a Christian ceremony, you are promising your spouse a lifetime commitment. The notorious words "till death do us part" are a part of this oath taken at the wedding. Scott Parnell has made his wife, Rachel, a lifelong commitment. They had fallen in love when in high school. They have been blessed with 2 children, teenage Tyler and 12 year old daughter Tawnya. How were they to know that Rachel would be stricken with Huntington's disease? Would Scott be able to remember his promise of "no tubes or wires to sustain life" they had talked about years ago? Would he be able to let go when the time came?

Letting go is never easy. It's not an easy thing for Rachel's mother to let go of her daughter. She is a well meaning grandmother who tries to help Scott with the kids but is out of touch in raising children in these troubled times in the 21st century. Tyler is in a rebellious state. He doesn't want to lose his mother but doesn't want to show that her health condition bothers him. His best friend, Dwight, is dealing with some family problems of his own. But, will Tyler go as far as Dwight's actions to escape from reality? Tawnya is at a difficult time in her life. She is dealing with her adolescent problems and a grandmother who insists that she is too fat. She turns to a destructive lifestyle. Celeste is Rachel's younger sister who always wanted to trail along with Rachel and Scott during their courtship. Celeste has a successful career in Seattle and agrees to give Tawnya a female role model, yet, she has never been a parent much less in a serious relationship. As Tawnya and Celeste become closer, will Scott be able to keep from growing closer to Celeste too? They have both made promises to Rachel, but will those promises be broken even as Rachel's life is deteriorating? Just how far will these promises keep the Parnell family from telling all the issues of their life?

"A New Promise" is an excellent book by a very talented new author, Julie Eller. "A New Promise" encompasses many issues of the 21st century. The book is a must read for anyone who enjoys a great storyline and seeing how God works in people's lives for His purpose. Sometimes when faced with adversity, it's easiest to blame God rather than see His blessings throughout your trials. Julie Eller has certainly used her God-given talents in order to show Christ's providence. I hope she writes more books in the near future. Pick up "A New Promise" soon, you certainly will enjoy it.

The book was wonderful and so expressive. The insight Julie has into a teenager's world, the characters all so well defined, the scriptures and wisdom given when confronting a difficult situation and the evidence of God's grace, along with the smooth flow of words and descriptions of inner turmoil or overflowing joys of life...well, I don't know why we couldn't see this one on the best seller's list. Julie Eller is good at what she does. I look forward to reading more and hope to see her books in all the book store shelves!

I couldn't put this book down. This is a richly crafted novel about opposing cultures, youth, love and political conflict. Daanish and Dia are real. The author crafted their characters with such complexity that I felt as if we were all in the same room together. The stories of each family are spun as smoothly as the silk on which the story is based. Brilliant!

I came across this book because I mentioned to a friend that I was sick of books written about 'the post-9/11 Muslim disaffection' and she said that TRESPASSING was written BEFORE and ABOUT pre-9/11 disaffection, so I might want to give it a try. I'm glad I did. It's a shame this book isn't getting as much attention as the spate of post-9/11 books, because there are so many things it puts into deeper perspective.

The character Daanish is studying in the States during the 1991 Gulf War, and the alienation and anger he feels as a young Muslim male during the Iraq invasion and subsequent American 'victory' are an eerie foreshadowing of the current crisis. It's not just the anti-Muslim media that oppresses him, but the general apathy of ordinary, even friendly Americans who don't want to know about their country's foreign policy. This book implies that the cost of this apathy is more anger, more alienation -- and more violence. If you want to know that the world we're living in today did not begin on 9/11, I highly recommend this book.

Amazing look in the complexities of contemporary Pakistan

Uzma Aslam Khan pulls off a very difficult feat in this novel. She successful creates a wide range of compelling characters who wind their way through various aspects of Pakistan of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The main protoganists are a male student who has returned home from America and is being set up with a woman from a well-connected family. The other is a free sprited local woman who has never been outside Pakistan and has fallen in love with this recent returnee, who is being set up with her best friend. Their relationship tests the limits of what is tolerated in a very traditional culture.

Other characters explore the political nature of life in Pakistan, from involvement in a movement against the government, to anger expressed at foreigners (i.e. Koreans fishing off the coast in traditional fishing waters to the First Iraq War.) This book is authentic in the sense that it explores the frustrations of Pakistani people, regardless of its justification. In fact, the author doesn't justify anything. She presents and lets the reader make his/her own judgements.

My only criticism is that she uses anti-U.S. Iraq War sources (i.e. from General Ramsey Clark) that the average Pakistani would not have access to and is very one-sided. However, this does not detract from the overall message that the average Pakistani was most certainly against the 1991 U.S. war in Iraq.

This is a moving tale and you feel sympathy for all of the principle characters who are caught in a system not of their own making and from which they cannot escape. The concerns are political, social, and economic.

Most Westerners have a difficult time seeing life through the lenses of those who don't have the freedoms and wealth that most in the world do not possess. Though I am an American who has lived many years overseas (I live in Taiwan), I live in a relatively open, prosperous and democratic country. Life here bears no resemblance at all to life as portrayed in Pakistan.

Ms. Khan deserves praise for daring to present to a Western audience the realities of Pakistani life as seen through her eyes. Even if you don't agree with some of the conclusions and beliefs of some of the characters, particularly vis a vis the United States, they also can't be denigrated or ignored. Even if you don't agree with the feelings of those in another culture and you feel they are the result of incomplete information, the feelings are still real and are ignored at our peril. Ms. Khan effectively weaves this into the story without being overly judgemental in her own right.

This book is a must read.

An amazing story of love, lust, power, greed, self-preservation, and self-loathing. The author does an amazing job of challenging our own value system by pushing us to see how all of these powerful states of being emanate from the universal "need to belong". Trespassing is a scintillating tale of the existential angst experienced by its characters, as well as an poignant cautionary essay on how the personal becomes political and vice versa.

Looking forward to Ms. Khan's next novel!
