Fascinating plot structureReview Date: 2006-07-15
The brilliance of the writing is in what the author does not disclose. The boy's father leaves the family in order to paint - following God's instructions. The author leaves it to the reader and the son to discern what that means - it is presented simply as another fact to place in context. Similarly, the brother's illness (or accident) is never given a cause, diagnosis or prognosis. The sister is left to grapple with her guilt over an unknown without knowledge to justify or assuage the guilt. The boy and girl fall in love - but neither their meeting nor their choice of each other are in the text. Rather the effects of their meeting are shown. And a single paragraph informs the reader of their eventual choice of each other.
The result is a book that mirrors the ambiguities and unknowns of life. A book that allows for the miraculous, the spiritual, the concrete, the insane ... all the while depicting the best and worst life has to offer. The book follows several love stories with all the messiness of real love rather than a romantic, picture-perfect, happily-ever-after, sanitized and insured for life love.
This book is well worth your time.
A Poetic Novel on Love and LifeReview Date: 2006-01-14
The love story itself is a metaphor of how people can become enraptured in another and in the power of love itself. To counterbalance the tribute to love, Williams gives us an unforgettable character, Margaret Gore, who sees that her daughter has become the beloved of the narrator, and who knows that love, in her experience, means trouble. She is both good-hearted and cynical at once: will her thwarting of this love prevent the two lovers from connecting? Williams prose is intensely poetic in addressing love, calling to mind jani johe webster's collection of poetry "sound of a shadow" and the philosophical novel "Written on the Body" by Jeanette Winterson.
A most beautiful and powerful example of Williams' prose is this description: "He was burned to the very rim of his soul, his fingers tingled, his hair stood on end, and he moved from teh studios that was already alight with the beckoning of God. At last ther He was again. God had come to him. The immensity of the rapture and vision beggared everything, and momentarily my father flew through the air. He cruised on the immaterial lightness of the spirit world like a moth and arched esaily across the hallway, the thinness of himself now see-through and clear .... The heavenly chariot was stalled outside in midair above the garden, the steeds breathing the August air, their flanks rising and falling in recovery from the speed of the long journey and their swett falling in the form of apple blossoms."
Williams' prose and this novel are unusual: he combines poetry with straightforward prose: "There is no such thing as chance"; he weaves togther two stories and also poses philosophical questions as he writes on. To read this novel is truly to be on a literary and poetic journey.

The author pushes for the natural body builder (which I highly applaud), and puts down steriod users, but he then praises pro-body builders who are juiced to the gills. Also his section on steriods is filled with false information. This would be a five star book if all the information was accurate.

The author gives honor to his teacher with a picture included.
That doesn't prove that it is real, but worth a read.
Another picture shows the basic standing posture, which is taught in
other books. Postures seem correct.
Can you achieve the same level as the master, the old man? Takes at least 4 years to see results, and 10 years to complete. How many of you have the patience?
Thanks to the internet, and other distractions, I didn't have the patience. No I don't have an IPOD, if I have that, I wouldn't be
doing my Tai chi everyday.
Great for a beginner.Review Date: 2008-07-21

Potentially life changing - must read!Review Date: 2008-02-03
Honestly, most chi-gung books and many classes out there just teach you some physical movements or "standing like a tree".. stand in different poses and hold it without a whole lot of additional instruction as to what goes with it. Mr Frantzis sheds some (in my opinion) much needed light as to what you are really supposed to be doing, the "internal details" of what you are supposed to be doing with your body and with your mind in a clear and straightforward way. Just the first third or so of the book up until the part where he talks about standing is easily worth the price of admission.
I say "potentially life changing" because for a period of maybe a few months I began to do the standing practices (not any of the swings) every morning and every night. After a few days with it, I found that my mind was a lot calmer and I was feeling physically stronger and more vibrant. After a week or two, I felt like I was floating on air.. Ease of movement made me feel like a dancer floating on the clouds, and the sense of wellbeing just continued to increase. It was quite amazing. I was involved in martial arts at the time, and my teacher commented how much better I was getting.. it had nothing to do with the martial arts training though, but just with the standing and dissolving practice. It made my meditation that I was trying to do every day just a whole lot easier.
I let myself get distracted, and stopped doing 1 1/2 - 2 hours a day like I used to. However, you don't have to be that hard-core (though the author said he did 6 hours a day for a time.. if that is whaco or dedication I don't know). I think once a day for 30 minutes or so would produce great results as well, the same as mine eventually just somewhat slower. But there is plenty of material here to get you motivated to put time and effort into the practice. That is another great thing about this book. Not only is the Author obviously very, very knowledgeable, but his story and his presentation is very straightforward and actually kind of inspirational. A must have book for anyone interested in alternative health, chi-practices, or Taoism in general.

The thing that I like is it's written by an M. D. who is also a dedicated bodybuilder. I would highly recommend this book to any bodybuilder's library.
Useful advice on every page!Review Date: 2008-04-02
I picked up this book because I saw this guy Carlon Colker on TV and everything he said made a lot of sense. When you have a medical degree (this guy, unlike most bodybuilding book authors, is an actual doctor) and spend 20 years in gyms, helping pros and aspiring pros get to the next level, you're going to accumulate a lot of wisdom. That's the best thing about this book. Colker tells you what to do, what to expect when you do it right, and what will happen if you do it wrong. And he does this for EVERYTHING. Supplements. Workouts. Eating. Drugs. Rest. Everything.
He knows cheats, too. He knows every little shortcut bodybuilders take to get more weight on the bar and more reps. I found a dozen different things I was doing that I didn't even know were cheats. That's worth the price of the book alone.
Oh, and a word to the wise for beginners: This isn't one of those silly "Grow 40 pounds of Muscle in 40 Days" books. I've been locked into the Colker EME Way for nine months now. I've put on maybe 7, 8 pounds of muscle, lost two inches on my waist, and MY CALVES ARE BANGIN! Slow and steady does it, baby! This book is the real deal!

The best book everReview Date: 2008-11-12
Do yourself a favor. Read this. More so if you are invester with some experience...Review Date: 2007-01-01
I have invested in the stock market for over 15 years. Have read the major investing books. Braden Glett belongs in the top echelons.
The author weaves together three essential foundational topics -- psychological, money management and stock selection techniques -- to bust some old myths and formulate new alternatives.
None of the topics are in themselves new, but the author is able to distill the key concepts and point out key distinctions in a manner that is succinct and very practical to deepen your understanding.
This book will challenge you to revisit your beliefs about investing. For example, do you believe in "buy low and sell high?" (as I did before reading this book).
The discussion of money management techniques, including the author's seemingly counter-intuitive "reverse scale" strategy of "doubling up" when a stock goes up is worth the price of the book alone.
The author presents a very concrete, step-by-step approach to his strategy of picking high-growth stocks integrated with money-management techniques.
In summary this book will help (re)build a solid foundation for investing and formulate a specific strategy for investing in high-growth stocks. Following the specific strategy is not necessary to gain valuable insight to refine your investment approaches.
Highly recommended!
Let me tell you why...Review Date: 2006-05-29
I recommend Stock Market Strategem simply because it discusses subjects that many investment books don't even bother to mention: risk management, for example, and his method for exits (even though I would never use his exit approach, for reasons beyond the scope of this review). Does Mr. Glett present some holy grail, end-all-be-all solution to investing? Of course not; nor should you expect him to. He does, however, honsetly provide great material that you and everyone else should consider prior to risking hard earned money.
Individuals looking for a single book to tell them how to make a fortune in the stock market are in for a bumpy ride at best, and will inevitably lose much money. People who understand that investing is a lifetime endeavor, however, will realize that this ambitious little book is a gem in the rough, deserving to sit beside the texts of the many other great authors that you will (right?) inevitably study as well.
In Stock Market Strategem, Mr. Glett presents one watered-down method for the long/intermediate term investor who wants to actively manage his portfolio. While this method is not for everyone, simply because there is no single method that fits everyone, I do admire Mr. Glett for his honest approach to the subject. I say this with all sincerity, having no connection to the person whatsoever.
The above having been said, I wish you the best of luck with your decision regarding the purchase. And best of luck with the trading/investing as well...
A completely misleading title with dubious recommendationsReview Date: 2006-05-03
First of all, Braden introduces his readers to some common misconceptions of the stock market - anyone who has read Peter Lynch's "One Up on Wall Street" published in 1989 will recognize that Braden's introduction is nothing more than blatant plagiarism of Lynch's book. Since this book is geared towards a beginner, I have no issues in him borrowing these golden rules, but I would expect some intellectual honesty by giving credit where it is due.
The second section of the book is devoted to presenting his strategies for picking winning stocks - this opens up a can of worms right away. The rationale for his strategy is dubious at best, he advocates picking stocks that are at 52 week high with some sort of upward trend. He introduces something called "Growth Factor" which is basically multiplying the share appreciation % with the revenue growth %; the higher the Growth Factor supposedly the better the stock. I've worked in a corporate finance department for more than 5 years and I've never heard of this "factor". Besides, I can't imagine why share appreciation has to be multiplied with revenue growth, sounds theoretically and practically unsound. The whole methodology for selecting stocks sounds arbitrary to me, like some kind of bastardized momentum strategy combined with an unheard of fundamental ratio.
I take issue also with his portfolio management strategy. At the beginning of the book, he encourages investors to actively manage their portfolio, but at the later chapters he tells us to set up a mechanical system that automatically buys and sells our positions based on preset drawdown percentages, what's so active about that?
As I understand, this book is supposed to be targeted at risk management for beginners, yet Braden offers investment advice that is highly risky without informing his readers of the potential dangers. He recommends that we tolerate a drawdown (i.e., a drop in stock value) of up to 34% while waiting for the "inevitable" stock that will eventually go up 10 times the buy price. Fine Braden, how many beginners have the resource and temperament to stomach such a sharp depreciation? What if the big winner does not come along soon enough? Investors with a low starting capital will be wiped clean dry! And isn't this taking multiple small looses hoping for a big win blatant gambling, something which he actively discourages in the beginning?
I urge readers to consider his suggestions critically before following them. There's no such thing as a system that automatically makes money, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is.

It works for meReview Date: 2008-11-27
When I went on the Fagin diet I noticed that I lost a predictable amount of weight each week, about four pounds for the first 1.5 months. I kept the nut consumption low, the oily fish consumption high, and made sure to get lots of extra virgin olive oil as well. I am rarely hungry with this diet, and when I am I just eat a few small pieces of chicken breast dipped in olive oil, or a table spoon of olive oil or peanut butter and I am not hungry for a couple of hours. I never feel weak or tired like I do on low-fat-high-protein diets, nor perpetually injured as on low-carb diets. My weight loss on low fat diets was never impressive, with a max weight loss of 15 pounds with very hard work. This is explained by the carbs creating an insulin response to store fat instead of burning it, according to Faigin. Low carb diets worked OK for me for a while, but after a few months I would feel like I was slowing wearing down, joints become stiff and I started losing energy becoming tired and suffering from joint pain. This was due to the perpetual glucagon catabolic cycle tearing my body down, according to Faigin.
The bottom line is Faigin accurately predicted every problem that I have had with low carb and low fat diets. Faigin also accurately predicted the outcome if I used his natural homoronal diet and exercise regimen, which was a lower weight set-point, feeling younger, less tired, faster muscle growth and I only work out not even twice per week. I hope everyone else gets as spectacular results.

Vital ControversyReview Date: 2008-02-20
This material is not meant to fulfill the extremes of chemicaly induced gauntness or artificial muscle-head aesthetic typically showcased in television and newstands as attractive.
In applying the techniques that are well defined, one will discover a lifetime's practice of a balanced diet (without calorie counting)and exercise (without overtraining)that does not require undue denial/suppression. The common denominator to all of the aforementioned habits(whether as a cause or effect)are hormones. Specifically, insulin, glucagon, testosterone and hgh. It is then no surprise to learn that as we reflect back to the times in our life when we felt most alive, energetic, optimistic and yes, happy, we were most hormonally charged. Conversely, when we were most unhappy, depressed, lethargic, we were hormonally imbalanced, as in our teens (unless you were highly active with exercise, which of course promotes hormonal output). If you are seeking the fountain of youth, look no further than the powerful resources within your own body and supporting/optimizing their natural functions.
As a person who is hereditarily pre-disposed to diabetes and heart disease, this book has provided me with the necessary tools to subvert these formidable life draining diseases. As further testimony, a close friend of mine was suffering from off-the-chart triglycerides and high cholestorol and couldn't understand why. After reading a section of the book on insulin, I realized his daily regimen of Jamba-Juice fruit smoothy was the culprit. Sure enough, as he stopped taking this everday, his levels dropped dramatically. There you have it, factual evidence to support the thesis. Although, don't take my word for it. This could perhaps be the most well-researched/bibliographed book I have ever read, good thing you put that law degree to use Rob. I would sooner consult this book on that basis than any of the complacent medical "professionals" who perpetuate disease containment through synthetics as their methodology to health.
Thanks for the life-long gift!

Excellent Book, Right On The MarkReview Date: 2008-01-04
Focusing on the hormonal response to food, as Rob Faigin does in this book, it becomes clear why sugar and other refined carbohydrates are so bad, if consumed on a daily basis. One reviewer (who apparently didn't read the book carefully) asks: "If the whole goal is to work the ATP/CP and Glycolytic system (glucose as source of energy) then why would you refrain from ingesting carbohydrates". The response is: that is NOT the "whole goal", or even a part of the goal. On page 166, Rob Faigin states: "The notion that glucose (derived from dietary carbohydrate) is necessary for energy fails to appreciate the fact that free fatty acids (derived from bodyfat and dietary fat) can, like glucose, be broken down to ATP. And...free fatty acids are the superior of the two fuel sources for 95% of your daily activity." The goal, as is implied by the title of the book, is to control the hormonal response to food!
That same reviewer complained that Mr. Faigin used Muscle and Fitness "as one of his sources". I couldn't find that source mentioned anywhere in the more than 1,484 references cited in the 20 Chapters of the book. Clearly this book is well documented with citations from over a thousand articles in well respected scientific publications. Even giving the reviewer the benefit of the doubt, so what if one source out of over a thousand was Muscle and Fitness?
This book is clearly NOT hype nor a waste of money. I highly recommend it.
