I have used this book in my Environmental Biology classes at Stanly Community College. It is well written, but at a reading level not beyond that of most high school graduates. It covers basic knowledge and current environmental problems. I really enjoy the Global Perspective sections. I highly recommend this book as a beginning environmental science book.

Superb textbook and reference guide for project finance professionals
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-19
This textbook and reference guide is by far the best textbook/reference guide I ever saw on capital projects (i.e. project finance, infrastructure finance, etc.) evaluation and risk/return decision-making analysis. The book is broken out into four major parts:

1. Foundations (accounting principles, financial statements, proposals for capital projects, project cash flows, estimation of capital expenditure, etc.)
2. Evaluation (TVM, Discounted CF techniques, inflation, taxation, discount rate, decision analysis, sensitivity analysis, scenario analysis, etc.)
3. Risk Assessment (risk and return, CAPM, CoD, CoE, WACC, Monte-Carlo simulation, real options analysis, etc.)
4. Financing (financial markets, types of loans, project finance, public-private partnerships, etc.)

The best thing about this book is not only the book is extremely well-designed and well-written, not only it is comprehensive and filled with truly useful information but also it contains numerous case studies WITH SOLUTIONS; furthermore, each chapter has multiple review questions / problems WITH SOLUTIONS.

In other words, this superb all-encompassing book is perfect for self-study.

I am not sure why the author thought this book's target audience is engineers - I believe every type of professionals working on capital projects, including financial professionals, engineers, lawyers and government officials would greatly benefit from this book.

Ideal Intro bk for a Financial Engineering/Risk Mgt course
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-27
This is probably the ideal introductory textbook for advanced undergrad or MBA/MSc Finance majors for their first Financial Engineering or Risk Management courses.

New students of these subjects would benefit more from reading this textbook than from reading the much more celebrated (whether deserving or not is up to debate) and yet much more expensive John Hull's classic 'Options, Futures, and other Derivatives', despite the fact that Hull's book is a favorite among many college professors (Hull's book was, incidentally, the textbook used in my MBA options and derivatives course)

There are many reasons that I feel this book represents good value and provides a smooth introduction into the world of financial engineering:

1. Comprehensive: All the major financial products and derivatives are thoroughly covered. Advanced topics such as Chooser options and real options are included as well.

2. Available computer/spreadsheet models: To supplement the excellent coverage in the textbook, the author have made available codes on his website for students to download and to further their self-study. The spreadsheets are professionally done and I found them very useful, either as learning tools or as template to develop more advanced models.

3. Clarity of exposition: The style is straightforward, avoiding unnecessary jargons. Yet the authors walk you through each step of the way using examples, graphs(plenty of them), fully developed equations, and tables.

4. Math and theoretical Rigor: This book does not lack mathematical rigor. Technical appendices are included as well, e.g. Ito's Lemma. If needed, relevant literature is quoted for the student to further his/her study.

5. Solid Value: this book can be had for less than fifty dollars. A bargain compared to many other finance books of similar caliber. Getting this book is like getting two for the price of one: both the financial engineering section and that of risk management could have been sold as two separate volumes.

With this book the authors have paved the way for the new students of FE and Risk management to explore these fascinating world. You will not regret the purchase.

An Educational Asset To The Field Of Aquatic Toxicology.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-31
This textbook is literally a constructive piece of scientific genius. Rand is perhaps one of the most knowledgable and most well respected authorities on Aquatic Toxicology and its many subdisciplines.

After persuing through the first few chapters of this wonderfully written scientific text, one becomes very interested and more hungry for knowledge dealing with this subject. Unlike many other novels of this nature, this one is very unique in that it gives the read a clear and very indepth picture of Aquatic Toxicology and its impacts on the environment as a whole.

This text deals with aquatic toxicology from an environmental pollution aspect dealing with manmade and natural chemical toxicants. It also deals with the ecotoxicity affects of man-made pesticides when aquatic organisms are involved in the bioecologicall food-chain.

In short one can soon surmise that this text is an ideal educational asset for all who are desiring a more comprehensive background and informative session in the field of aquatic toxicology and its subdivision. It is superbly written and it details every single aspect of toxicological studies dealing with aquatic organisms in their environmental setting.

A seminal, benchmark publication.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-04
The product of the Committee on Genetically Modified Pest-Protected Plants' inquiries into the risks and benefits of crops that are genetically modified for pest resistance, the urgency of establishing an appropriate regulatory framework for these products, and the importance of public understanding of the issues involved with transgenic crops, this critically important report is an invaluable and timely addition to agricultural and genetic science studies collections. Genetically Modified Pest-protected Plants also includes a critical review of the federal polices toward transgenic products, the 1986 coordinated framework among the key federal agencies in the field, and the rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency for regulation of plant pesticides. Case studies explore the commercial production and oversight of transgenic crops including the most widely used "Bt" transgenic pest-protected plants. This is a seminal, benchmark publication that is highly recommended reading for agricultural students and family farmers, agribusiness professionals, governmental policy makers, public health advocates.

Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-20
This book is an excellent desk reference and text in the area of health and environmental risk analysis. The appendices are excellent and provide over 25 tables related to the field. Included are tables listing various RCRA and CERCLA hazardous substances. Also in the appendices are tables related to hazardous air pollutants health effects such as subchronic and chronic toxicity, and carcinogenicity. The text covers the latest methods used in hazard identification, consequence analysis, and exposure assessment. Methods to estimate toxicity of chemicals based on structural activity relationships are also covered. I highly recommend the book to anyone working in the field.

How the lights stay on
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

Roe's and Schulman's book does two things. It provides an inside look at how the California electricity system managed to provide a highly reliable service despite the many challenges it faced. It also uses this site to draw general implications for high reliability in other critical infrastructure systems, such as security, finance and communications. Extremely well written and engaging the book takes us right into the control room to show us how through the use of particular practices and skills operators and other professionals juggle extreme and volatile demands and in doing so make sure that millions of individuals and organizations will continue functioning without disruption. Roe and Schulman go beyond explaining this miracle to develop provocative ideas about high reliability management that challenge current thinking and have many important insights for practitioners. This is a highly rewarding reading.
