Intriguing Life of Elephants in ZoosReview Date: 2002-08-05
Whatever your beliefs about animal rights, you will be interested to read about today's zoos. Dr. Schmidt traces the history of elephants used as tools of war and as laborers in the forests. He shows how the life of labor that these animals lived was more suitable to them than the lives they now lead in sterile, cramped cages in the zoo.
What are our responsibilities to these animals and how can we change their living conditions? There are no easy answers to these questions. This is a book that disturbs me. Will I continue to look for the answers? Perhaps. If you have thoughts about something that intrigues you, you may look into a book for the answer. However, I believe some books are written to ask important questions rather than to provide the answers.

Good CD shame there is no bookReview Date: 2007-08-03
I did, however, think it was a shame/a bit mean, that there was no book to read along with. This is the first story CD I have bought that did NOT include the book to read along with, having to buy the books separately makes it pretty pricey. 4 stars for the product 2 stars for the value for money.

Magical IndeedReview Date: 2007-01-03
The hardback is of good quality as are the pages. The pictures are gorgeous. There are quotes from various books, people, songs, etc. about those that practice the art of magic. Each quote has a corresponding picture. The quotes & illustrations refer to a wide variety of cultures and legends, including Greek, Arabian, German, Arthurian, even Tolkien, as well as many others. There is an index, in the back, that lists the title and artist of each picture.
I highly recommend this book to those who love magic, mythology, legend, or just beautiful artwork. This is a great piece to keep on the coffee table.

It's hot, Eddie's drank all the lemoande, what will Maisy doReview Date: 2004-01-28
Both of my daughters love the Maisy books; there's something about their simple stories and colorful pictures that even appeals to adults. The books are short and easy to read. But, the stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.
Maisy's enjoying a cool drink when Eddie decides to slurp it all up. What will Maisy and Eddie do? I guess I've read enough of these to my children that I'm developing favorites. This is one I always seem to enjoy reading to the kids and, as usual, they love it too.

Surprising!Review Date: 2006-01-03
The illustrations in Mama Loves Me are nice--I'm partial to blue elephants, so I was bound to like these happy characters. The text tells about things that the mother and baby elephant do together. Although these activities (like playing with lemurs) aren't things that most children have experienced, many readers will be able to relate to the warmth of the parent/child relationship. The specificity the author uses in description of the elephants' activities makes the story more interesting.
There isn't much of a plot to this book, but I don't know how much plot a person can expect of a board book. Mama Loves Me is a feel-good story with an interesting format.

Elephants are frequently referenced but not directly encountered. The emphasis is on how the socialist government is trying to convert the native people's from hunting, and or poaching, to other forms of food production.
He interview numerous officials and violators but presents his material in the form of a narrative which is quite intriguing and well written as you might expect from an accomplished journalist and magazine editor.
Well worth reading.
