In this true life adventure British journalist Nicholas Gordon journeys to Tanzania, Africa, to investigate the status of the declining wild elephant population. (20,000 slaughtered in ten years leading up to 1990 when he was there).

Elephants are frequently referenced but not directly encountered. The emphasis is on how the socialist government is trying to convert the native people's from hunting, and or poaching, to other forms of food production.

He interview numerous officials and violators but presents his material in the form of a narrative which is quite intriguing and well written as you might expect from an accomplished journalist and magazine editor.

Well worth reading.

Intriguing Life of Elephants in Zoos
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-05
This nonfiction book looks at the life of elephants in zoos. Since Dr. Schmidt was the zoo veterinarian of the Portland, Oregon, zoo for 25 years, he was entrusted with the health and well being of the herd of elephants that lived at the zoo.

Whatever your beliefs about animal rights, you will be interested to read about today's zoos. Dr. Schmidt traces the history of elephants used as tools of war and as laborers in the forests. He shows how the life of labor that these animals lived was more suitable to them than the lives they now lead in sterile, cramped cages in the zoo.

What are our responsibilities to these animals and how can we change their living conditions? There are no easy answers to these questions. This is a book that disturbs me. Will I continue to look for the answers? Perhaps. If you have thoughts about something that intrigues you, you may look into a book for the answer. However, I believe some books are written to ask important questions rather than to provide the answers.

This beautifully illustrated book by McIntyre and Henderson serves as a guidebook for parents and children alike who are struggling with the tauma of loss. Best read together, the book provides a trail map for parents and children who may be struggling to understanding the progression of feelings associated with loss of a friend or loved one. With map in hand, the journey can be far less troubling. McIntyre draws upon her extensive training and experience to point the way and provide a wonderful guidebook of understanding for grieving families.

Elephant, Mouse, and all their friends work together and have fun. "Just a Little Bit" is a sweet story about friendship and teaches us all a great lesson. As it was inscribed to me by my friend, "Keep this book on hand to remind you at times when you may be tempted to give up on something, that it may just be that next little bit of effort, that little extra push that makes a world of difference." This book made me smile and I loved the illustrations too!

Just when the trip gets good, the boat sinks.

Peter Gault writes in a scatalogical, satirical and often hysterically funny way. The premise of the book is that a lawyer chucks it all to sail away on his boat. His adventures and characters are great, especially Sir Charles. What Gault does to the end of the story can only be called derailing. I was laughing out loud through the first two thirds of the book until the author drops acid or decides that the readers are jerks. The ending deserved better treatment especially for so talented a writer. Overall, it is a quick worthwhile read for the few good laughs and insights

Good CD shame there is no book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

The CD is great, one of the few that my son and daughter will both listen to. I like having more than one story on one CD, it makes is good for pre-bedtime listening.
I did, however, think it was a shame/a bit mean, that there was no book to read along with. This is the first story CD I have bought that did NOT include the book to read along with, having to buy the books separately makes it pretty pricey. 4 stars for the product 2 stars for the value for money.

Magical Indeed

I received this book as a Christmas gift. I already owned Ratisseau's book on Mermaids, so I had high expectations for this book. I was not disappointed. The book is lovely.
The hardback is of good quality as are the pages. The pictures are gorgeous. There are quotes from various books, people, songs, etc. about those that practice the art of magic. Each quote has a corresponding picture. The quotes & illustrations refer to a wide variety of cultures and legends, including Greek, Arabian, German, Arthurian, even Tolkien, as well as many others. There is an index, in the back, that lists the title and artist of each picture.
I highly recommend this book to those who love magic, mythology, legend, or just beautiful artwork. This is a great piece to keep on the coffee table.
Also check out Mermaids (Magical Beings) by the same author.

It's hot, Eddie's drank all the lemoande, what will Maisy do
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Why the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's world.

Both of my daughters love the Maisy books; there's something about their simple stories and colorful pictures that even appeals to adults. The books are short and easy to read. But, the stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.

Maisy's enjoying a cool drink when Eddie decides to slurp it all up. What will Maisy and Eddie do? I guess I've read enough of these to my children that I'm developing favorites. This is one I always seem to enjoy reading to the kids and, as usual, they love it too.

Surprising!

When I opened this book, I wasn't expecting to see a big cloth trunk inside--and neither was my 11-month-old son, who was instantly delighted.
The illustrations in Mama Loves Me are nice--I'm partial to blue elephants, so I was bound to like these happy characters. The text tells about things that the mother and baby elephant do together. Although these activities (like playing with lemurs) aren't things that most children have experienced, many readers will be able to relate to the warmth of the parent/child relationship. The specificity the author uses in description of the elephants' activities makes the story more interesting.
There isn't much of a plot to this book, but I don't know how much plot a person can expect of a board book. Mama Loves Me is a feel-good story with an interesting format.
