This book is so sweetly put together. The images were carefully chosen; so beautiful and elegant. Ratisseau did an exquisite job. Her Mermaid book is just as lovely too. One will also like Lori Eisenkraft-Palazzola's books too if they like this one.

This beautifully crafted little book is a thin volume just 7 1/2" x 8 1/2" with silvery accents on the cover. It is a satisfyingly enchanting compilation of rare fairy art and delightful quotations on the subject of fairies. If you have been a fairy lover for any length of time you will have probably seen a few of these wonderful paintings but most will probably be new to you as Elizabeth Ratisseau has done a brilliant bit of treasure hunting to come up with these images. The work is broken down into sections for each of the four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water, as well as a section on Fairies of Childhood. Usually, I find several disappointing images sprinkled among the good ones in compilations or calendars featuring fairies but each and every one in this book is truly magical, hauntingly fey. I encourage you to get this as a treat for yourself or any other fairy person you love.

For not yet published...I find it odd that I have a copy. Needing more copies for friends, which they will also enjoy. The pictures are truly wonderful, and children love them. The adults will love the quotes. A must. I truly enjoyed the book.

The other reviews center on the diner language. That's all very well, but I like the quirky characters. Does anyone else perceive Frank and Ernest, especially Ernest, as the epitome of capable masculinity, like in movies from the 1940s? They are cool, they are witty, they ooze dignity and they are well-dressed! Where are real life men like Frank and Ernest!?

I liked this book A HOLE LOT!!! It's an easy reader book but it is interesting how they talk in such an odd language. When I was much younger every night I would read this book.

This book is unique in that it is written in language used in a diner. For example, is you order ham, they might say "Noah's son". If you are familiar with the name of Noah's sons you would guess this right off the bat!!! Also, my husband and I are Dr Pepper collectors and Dr Pepper is mentioned in the book. We were so thrilled when we read this and honestly, that is the only reason we bought the book!!! I do plan to read it to our young friends. I think they will get a kick out of the way it is written.

Diner Lingo for Kids and Adults

Review Date: 2002-03-13
Never much a fan of her Carl books, I nevertheless love this one, and am saddened to see that it's out of print. Frank (a bear) and Ernest (an elephant) make their living operating businesses while the owners are on vacation. When this pair agrees to run a diner, though, they must learn a whole new language--and we right along with them.

Kids love this, or at least my son did. For some time, we'd use diner talk from the book, calling donuts "life preservers," coffee with cream "a blonde" and vanilla milkshakes, "white cows." The language is revealed naturally in the text (though word mongers will love the glossary in the back); customers order in ordinary language such as "A tuna sandwich on toast, please and a Dr. Pepper with the ice left out" and then Frank calls the order to Ernest using diner talk: "Ernest, I need a radio sandwich down, and an M.D., hold the hail." It is fresh, funny and wonderful.

For the fun of the language, the warmth of these characters, whom no one seems to notice are an elephant and a bear, to the detailed illustrations (you could easily craft a stage set from these paintings), this book reminds us, as children do, that food, after all, is fun. Finally, the diner's retro design and the book's nostalgic feel might make it a fun read for grandparents, who possibly remember such places, to share with their grandchildren. I hope that this book will be reissued, as it is a truly pleasurable one.

I found this scholastic paperback at a thrift shop in Yuba City. The illustrations caught my eye and then I realized it was an Alexandra Day book. Going to a restaurant is so much fun when you know the lingo of the cook! And just look at the concoctions Ernest and Frank came up with. Even though this book is out of print you must try to get a used one. It is well worth your child's imagination! The little boy who had my book took very good care of it.

This Green Tiger's Publication of Mother Goose Rhymes is my 2 year old's favorite book to read. It has a great selection of nursery rhymes, and some have several verses. Each nursery rhyme is given two pages, with two accompanying vintage illustrations for each rhyme. My daughter loves to gaze at the old-fashioned paintings and woodcut illustrations while I read the rhymes. She never gets tired of it!

It was given to us as a gift when my daughter was born, and I'm now purchasing several copies to give to my friends babies. Highly recommended.

I have gone to various libraries, bookstores, read countless reviews and finally settled on this Mother Goose book because I wanted to avoid the amateur cartoonish looking drawings that many Mother Goose books have nowadays. When I purchased this book, based on other reviews, I thought it was going to sound like the King James bible but fortunately it didn't. You don't need to be too concerned about the type of English used in this book. Half of this book's pictures are professional musuem quality art which unfortunately lack humor. They are just too serious. I was bored and so was the child. Yes, some of the illustrations are humorous but only a handful. The publisher claims to have chosen the best pictures but I would have to strongly disagree. The other half of the illustrations look like 40's and 50's commercial art. Nothing wrong with that but, not what I was looking for. My other concern was if there were a lot of black and white pictures. The book was okay there. There are two pages allotted per rhyme and at least one is always in color. I wanted a book that did not substitute Jack and Jill with animals etc. but have to mention Sylvia Long's Mother Goose because it is just beautiful and creative. She DOES substitute all characters with animals but it is just impressive. I have not decided to purchase that book however because I want a book that does not change its characters in its pictorials. I will keep searching but may just ask my mother to find the mother goose book that I had grown up with. Believe me, there is a reason why this Mother Goose book is not a best seller. Iona Opie's Mother Goose books have the highest ratings but the illustrations are so similar to the "Tom and Jerry's" cartoons.

This is a truly beautiful book. The illustrations are museum like quality -- no amateur artists here. The selection of Mother Goose tales is impressive. The paper is thick stock, high grade. This is a book that you will want to keep for many years, that both children and adults will enjoy.

My wife and I had been searching for a high-quality, hardback edition of Mother Goose both to read to our daughter and to treat as a keepsake, and we struggled to find something we were happy with. This edition ended our search - it is just fantastic. It has a great range of nursery rhymes - all the traditional ones and plenty of less common ones; and each nursery rhyme is accompanied by two beautiful illustrations (that come from notable illustrators from the turn of the century through the 40's and 50's). The production quality is very high for the whole book - especially the illustrations. And my daughter loves it...she asks for it every night, stares intently at the illustrations, and has started repeating the rhymes throughout the day.
The book has preserved the traditional language of the nursery rhymes as well, for better or for worse depending on what you are looking for. Some of the language is very British, and there has been no modern updating of either language or themes for any of the nursery rhymes - something that some Mother Goose books have taken on.
All in all, we have just been thrilled with this book. It has absolutely served the purpose of being fun and readable and being a special, high quality edition worthy of treating as a keepsake/special book.

WoW! I bought this book for my 5th child because I was looking for something sweet and sentimental that would appeal to a little boy. He loved and still loves this story, many years later. He loved reading this one over and over and it was one book that I never tired of, either. It required snuggling up and I felt soothed by the beautiful colors and sentimental story. My little boy (now 7) will still have me read this one to him if the older kids aren't watching! I'm saving it for my grand-kids. It's just a wonderul book that reinforces all the special things about being a family.

I love the Humphrey book series, but I have to say, this one is not the best. Of course, it's beautifully illustrated, and is still a lovely book. But the story just doesn't hold my toddler's attention like the other Humphrey books do. It's a bit too detailed and long-winded, and the story doesn't go anywhere. I recommend "Humphrey's Birthday" or "Humphrey's Bedtime" instead.

I found a Humphrey's Corner baby book while I was pregnant with my son and decided that this had to be the theme for my sons nursery, and then while looking for the stuff for his nursery, found the books and fell even deeper in love with Humphrey, these stories are good wholesome, innocent and fun stories, I like reading them to my son, and he likes hearing them. I too, got him the stuffed Humphrey, and baby Jack. I wish there were more stars, cause I would give a ton more.

This book is absolutely adorable. The illustrations are charming, the font is perfect, and the story is very sweet. It follows Humphrey, a little elephant, as he collects his favorite things looking for the perfect place to play. It is a wonderful gift from a mother to a child (the ending will melt every mother's heart!) I gave it to my daughter as a first birthday present, and she won't enjoy the story for a year or two yet (too many words to a page for a 1 year old) but I had to have it for her. There is also a stuffed Humphrey available that I bought her at FAO Schwarz.

This is one of the best of the Elephant & Piggie Books, because it shows such strong emotion that young children can really relate to. Though they are excellent first readers because the stories and artwork are excellent, they are also great books to read to young children. Mo Willems should be a part of every child's library!!

Mo Willems is one of the best writers in children's literature today. The Elephant and Piggie books are great for little ones learning to read. Mr. Willems has a unique gift for making books with few words and simple illustrations laugh-out-loud funny.

My 4 year old daughter loves all of the books and has most of the Elephant and Piggie books memorized. She loves to read them aloud. She also loves to look for the sly appearances of characters from the other books that Mr. Willems includes in every book he writes.

Bottom line: Great books for kids and fun for Mom and Dad, too.

My son loves the whole Elephant & Piggie series. In fact, these books are what taught him to read at age 4. They are repetitive and use short, easy words. Plus, they are hilarious. My son wants to read them each night. "I Love My New Toy" was just as funny as the rest of the ones we have. Mo Willems is the best children's author out there, in my opinion. We have all of his books, and they get read repeatedly. The whole family enjoys them when they are read aloud.

Mary's book is a wonderful addition to any child's library, but there are a couple of errors on this page. Firstly, the book is a hardcover edition with a jacket and second, the age level is much lower... more like 0+ because it works as both a read-to-me and a read-aloud book. This is a great present for grandchildren and a trip back in time for grandparents as well. Kudos to Ms. Crowley.

Mary Crowley's lovely new book. I Love To Visit My Grammy, is just beautiful. Mary's illustrations are soft and colorful, and her message is one that should appeal to adults and children alike. I think this book would make a wonderful Christmas gift for parents to read to their young children and it would become a favorite! Older children can easily read it for themselves. The glossy pages are a reminder of favorite books I had as a child in the 1940s. I highly recommend this book for every child on your list.

This book is really cute and such a joy to read! I read it myself before reading it to the Kindergarten class, and I honestly thought it was good but I wasn't overly impressed; however, when I read it out loud to the Kindergarten students, the kids absolutely LOVED it! It kept their full attention to the very end and they all laughed out loud a couple of times. It was really cute. They enjoyed it so much that they asked me to read it a second time. The kids can really relate to the story and the emotions and thought processes that the elephant and piggie go through. I am so happy that I bought this book. It is now a class favorite. I definitely recommend it.

An emergent reader series that is not boring! It's funny, you can actually listen to it again and again and again, which if your child is learning how to read or a struggling reader you will:)

It is emergent/early reader, think level 1 with decodable words repeated and introduced perfectly. Enough to gain skill but not too much to bore. (Think Dick & Jane.......easy to decode but boring)

By the author of the "Don't let the pigeon...." & "Knuffle Bunny" series and "Leonardo the terrible Monster" Mo Willems is a Caldecott winner, former Sesame Street writer and a genius!

Buy them all & look forward to nighttime or anytime storytime. (I keep some of them in the car)

Lots of fun

My son (almost 3 1/2) started with "Today I Will Fly" a month ago which he LOVED. As soon as we finished reading this one I was instructed to immediately read it three more times that morning (and 2 more times that afternoon). He loves that he can retell the story based on the pictures, the expressions and the short phrases. This is definitely a favorite in our house, so much that my younger son ( 1 1/2) likes to "read" them too.
It is humor that my son "gets" and adults should enjoy too.

Scaring people is fun. There is really no getting around this fact. Kids know this better than anyone. Mo Willems knows that kids know this better than anyone. And now he's gone and written a book about it. Fitting right in with previous "Elephant & Piggie" titles, "I Will Surprise My Friend" provides a situation kids will relate to, presented with playfulness, wit, and an ace sense of humor.

The story begins when Gerald (the Elephant) and Piggie come upon a squirrel who is about to surprise his friend. They like the idea so much they decide to give it a try on on each other. They creep up to opposite sides of a big rock and wait to get startled. This setup is ripe for some silliness. Gerald and Piggie both start to wonder where the other one is. They look around the rock at the same time - no one there. They walk around the rock at the same time - nothing. When our heroes finally give up and head out to find each other, they finally get the shock they were hoping for.

The author's knack for getting inside the head of youngsters and seeing things from their perspective is on display here. From the way Gerald and Piggie immediately want to try something they see to how they end up waiting for the other one to scare them, beginning readers will identify with this title.

Willems continues to get his PHD in emotive minimalist illustration in "I Will Surprise My Friend". Each page brings expressions and gestures that announce the mood of each character as clear as day. Similar to other titles in this series, the story is told completely through dialog in the form of word balloons. This makes it a good choice for some good ol' individual reading. And kids will definitely want to read this one - be sure to have a couple copies on hand.

Hi Stephanie,

I just wanted to give you an update as to how I believe your CD has worked for me so far.

While listening to the CD I saw myself having a conversation with a woman that is becoming a partner of mine. In our last meeting she stated that she didn't want to charge for our services. That she wanted to give it away. (We will be working with Children that have learning disabilities and she just wants to help.) I thought long and hard about this and it just didn't sit well with me. I saw myself having a conversation with her explaining that we needed to charge and I saw this conversation going very well. So having said that, I met with her the next day at a local Starbucks. She sat down and before I could begin to tell her what was on my mind (and before she even got her coffee) she started to tell me that she thinks we should have a fee for our services and that she was wrong to think otherwise!! I looked at her and giggled and just was amazed at how easily this had happened. I shared with her that I had meditated on the fact that we would come to an agreement and she would understand why we needed to charge. She and I had a fantastic meeting and it went so well! I just had to giggle throughout the day as to how easily this had worked out for me.

I am so happy to say that I really believe that your CD helped me to manifest this going so well! Thank you for your gift and I look forward to giving you more testimonials!!!

Blessed not stressed,
Jonnata

Bravo !!!!

Without a doubt this is the BEST Program that I have heard yet on the Law of Attraction. What I find so very different about this CD is that it not only gives you the theory behind Manifesting your desires, but it also sends you soaring into the emotions that drive the vibrations through the roof of good feelings. It is the good feelings that are the vehicle which is needed to get you to your desired outcomes. Other programs seem to tell you what needs to be done and why, but fail to provide the means of getting you to your Desired Destination. It is like having a luxury sports car with the gas tank empty, and no gas station in sight.

This CD not only provides the luxury sports car, but fills the tank and even pushes the gas pedal for you. All you have to do is relax and know where you want to go, and it gives you the means of getting there effortlessly.

I absolutely Love this Program.

The book and labels are fantastic! I purchased some old luggage, applied these labels, and had instant, vintage luggage! The labels are great reproductions with vivid color. The booklet has a lot of information on the history of luggage labels and the Golden Era of travel. A great addition to any collection!

This booklet and 40 luggage labels does the trick! I wanted to decorate an old travel case and didn't want to go to the expense of buying lots of vingage luggage labels that are now worn and easy to tear, so I bought this collection and it's perfect! Clear, crisp images of various sizes and from lots of different hotels around the world. I was more than pleased!

Harold Darling's booklet and actual luggage labels are fabulous...they have transformed my old beat-up leather suitcase into a work of art! Thank you so much for your wonderful collection.

My Teacher Sleeps In School helps us to see the more human side of teachers. It brings out the wild imagination but makes sense at the same time. It makes the reader wonder about the real after school life of teachers. A very intersting book, never a dull moment.

I think this book is great book. I like how the characters are like in this book, because it seems that they very enjoy school. And also i like it because it something different having elephants going to school, and this reminds me of my friends and I having fun at school.

This is a wonderful story about kindergarten kids who think their teacher lives in the classroom. She plans a surprise field trip to show them she is a real person, not just a teacher. This is a great book to help kids understand that teachers are people too. As a teacher of 2nd graders, I highly recomment it.

A great book- I have always liked this one. A girl named Molly thinks her teacher lives at her school. Molly and her friends look for clues to see if she is right. This book has good plot elements and a nice ending. Four students suprise their teacher with a home made card and a snack. Soon, the whole class thinks their that their teacher, Mrs. Marsh, sleeps in school. Who ever thought that their teacher lived at school? This book is definitely worth reading. Does Mrs. Marsh really sleep in school? Read the book to find out!
