Elephant SongReview Date: 2001-08-04
Yet the thread of humor in Longyear's books still shows though. Since the people who are stranded are cirus people they have an unique way of dealing with this traditional plot.
Over all it's the story of the relationship and significance of the elephant to a cirus.
Longyear reminds me of Theodore Sturgeon in the way he deals more with the human relashionships then with what is considered more hardcore S/F.
This book is a S/F fan must don't miss it now that the publisher has finally reprinted it.

Civil War historical fiction of Indiana soldiers.Review Date: 2008-08-18
"Seeing the elephant" was a phrase used as having "had it" or a soldier having seen enough of war. The Fifth Indiana was forced to "see the elephant" many times. Survivors of the 24th, 9th, 10th, and 6th Hoosier regiments provided first-hand details for this book. The fictional Fifth Indiana was started in 1861 (planned for 3 months) but continued till the war's end.
This book is recommended for all Civil War buffs, but especially for Hoosier soldier enthusiasts. The Indiana influence in several battles including Shiloh, Murphysburo, Brown's Ferry, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Stone River, Nolinsville, Tullahoma, and others is told.
Author, Robert Gray, was also a Hoosier. Why 4 and not 5 stars? Not for the story, but for the presentation. There are a number of editing errors: misspellings, word usage, etc in the book but if overlooked, it still is a wonderful bit of Hoosier history. Perhaps it was self published. No matter, it's a keeper for Indiana history and Civil War fans to say nothing of Hoosier author collectors.

In its 128 pages, it includes all the information concisely, as well
as beautiful pictures showing this great cat in the wild.
Although I wish there were a few more, what's there is admirable
and of high quality. Knowing the author, you can also read it assured that the information is true and accurate. I, without
a doubt, recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn more about these majestic creatures. Even veterans on the subject
will undoubtly find this book beneficial.
