April Pulley Sayre's Secrets of Sound is an invaluable resource for teachers. It is packed with information yet engagingly written. Not only does the book provide a fresh look at whales, elephants, and migratory birds, but also at the scientists who study these creatures. This behind-the-scenes peek into the lifestyles of these scientists may motivate children to explore a scientific career. At the end of each section, Sayre brings out the conservation effots of the featured scientist. This book on bioacoustics supports curriculum standards which require children to understand the physics of sound. Fine photos bring the text to life.

This book is difficult to find but worth the search. It was about Saxon going back to his hometown to his friend's funeral, but Roberts was able to make me remember a similiar time in my life. He so captured the feelings that they became mine. This book is truly extraordinary, and I recommend you hunt it down.

Very simply: if you want to know a very great deal about topos theory, buy this book. I mean, seriously, if you plan to make real work on topos theory a part of your life, then grit your teeth and come up with the money. If you do not want to know a very great deal about it, do not buy this book. You can use it at the library as a reference.

If you merely want a professional understanding of what topos theory is, then read Johnstone's earlier TOPOS THEORY. That far shorter book gives a better overview. My Amazon review of it discusses others on the subject. Most are more accessible than Johnstone's books and go more into particular aspects of the theory.

This book is a reference on all the methods, and the latest results, in topos theory. If you want the definition of "split opfibration", it is here, along with some 80 pages of background, examples, and motivation. Johnstone does an heroic job of unifying the terminology and organizing the theorems.

More than that, Johnstone has written down an expert, encyclopedic view of the subject today. It is rare for a top mathematical researcher to give so deep an account of their field. It is rare for anyone to even work out such an explicit, coherent, extensive account of the whole. Not everyone will agree with his view. Some would like to see much less of such logical topics as "allegories", others would like to see the logic more formalized from the start. But Johnstone builds a case for his choices: partly implicit in his success at explaining things this way, and partly by explicit reasons.

If you want to know that much about the subject then you want to immerse yourself in this book.

A poetic and truthful book from a gifted photographer(okay, full disclosure: he's my brother!). A journal in words and pictures that teaches us to "slow down" and see that even the tiniest moments in our daily life are rich with joy and insight. A spiritually uplifting and aesthetically pleasing book for coffee table or to give as a gift to any art lover. Enjoy!

The subtitle is not hype; this book mesmerizes

I was skeptical about the title of this book, but enchanted with the picture on the cover. In my hands, there was absolutely no marketing hype. This book will capture your heart with Hemanta Mishra's clarity, humanity and commitment.

Mishra has worked in Asia on a number of conservation projects for over 30 years. This book tells the story of efforts to save the greater one-horned Asian rhino from extinction. He calls it "a mystical beast legendary for its power, its sexual energy, its unpredictable temperament, and its prodigious strength." He describes the political violence in Nepal beginning with the massacre of the king's family in 2001 by the eldest son and ending with the Maoist insurgency.

Kings play a key role in the conservation efforts. The murder of the recent king led to its now uncertain future. In the Tarpan ceremony a Nepalese king must hunt and kill a male rhino and offer the beast's blood in a prayer for peace and prosperity.

Mishra's book puts humanity into the Smithsonian's summary of the status of these rhinos: "Greater one-horned Asian rhinoceroses once ranged from Pakistan across northern India to Nepal, Bhutan, and the border with Myanmar (Burma), and perhaps ranged even further, into southern China. Today, they are confined to a few small, protected populations totaling about 2,000 animals. Most live in several parks in India and in Nepal's Royal Chitwan National Park."

Hemanta Mishra worked in the Nepalese wildlife office in the early 1970s and ran the King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation. He was awarded the J. Paul Getty Prize for Natural Protection in 1987 for "for his ground breaking biotic studies on Mt. Everest, his development of Nepal's park systems, and his work on implementation of "Operation Tiger," the largest conservation project in Asia."

I agree completely with "Scientific American": "Mishra, a Nepalese wildlife biologist trained in the West, is not a professional writer, but his intelligence and wit make this a mesmerizing account that intertwines politics, conservation and tensions between the traditions of East and West."

You can hear Mishra discuss his book and his conservation efforts on Leonard Lopat Show on the WNYC website. You'll hear his voice for a long time after you read his book.

The debut title of a bilingual (English/Spanish) picturebook mysteries series for young readers by author/photographer Elana Ashley, Splunkunio Splunkey: Detective And Peacemaker (Detective y pacificador) introduces a stuffed animal detective who is called upon to find out what has happened to a lost friendship bracelet. In carrying out his investigation, Splunkey helps two friends find more than just one very special bracelet. With a fun and engaging story text so very nicely illustrated by her photography, Elana Ashley's Splunkunio Splunkey: Detective And Peacemaker is especially recommended for family, school, and community library bilingual picturebook collections for children who are preschool through second grade.

As expected, this book from America's greatest writer is fun and funny. It's actually three books, put together in a facsimile edition by Oxford. The first books, _The Stolen White Elephant, etc._ is a collection of Clemens' humorous short stories and speeches. Though these do not get into the same serious criticism of society as _Huck Finn_ or _Connecticut Yankee_, they do have a biting tone and make the reader laugh. Despite the title, the only of these tales with any detectives is the title story. The second book, _Tom Sawyer, Detective_, follows Tom and Huck on a third adventure. Huck tells the story, and though the accent isn't done as thoroughly as in the prequel, the novel is funny and...well, funny! The last novel, _A Double-Barreled Detective Story_, makes fun of the whole detective genre.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who who missed Tom, Huck and Hank Morgan, and to anyone looking for a good laugh.

One of the things I really appreciate about Gary Kroehnert's "Taming Time, or, How Do You Eat an Elephant?" is that you write in it. Lots. It starts on page 9, where you write down what you hope to do as a result of what you learn from his book. By answering his well-constructed, thought-provoking questions in writing, you think critically about how you manage your time--and find ways to improve. This book is not about theory and advice. Each page is geared toward the content that is most relevant to you, then applying it to your life.

Kroehnert successfully balances work and non-work time management, leading you through planning and prioritizing, using planning calendars effectively, and battling six time-wasters. (Those issues are real-world: phone calls, meetings, procrastination, delegation, office organization, and visitors.) The 50-tip summary starting on page 171 is especially helpful.

Readers should know that Kroehner's examples use the Day-Timer system. They should also know that the techniques he demonstrates using Day-Timer will transfer very well to any portable calendar system, with the possible exception of the newer personal digital assistants.

Overall, this book is well worth the investment--if you use it.

I received this book as a shower gift from a teacher that I teach with. Being a teacher, we have tons of books and I read to my son daily. This is his favorite book and the one he always wants me to read. Even when it is mixed up among other books he seems to always find it. He loves all the elephants that pop up and move about the pages. It has held up well for as much as we read and play with it.
