Baker is a master author and this is one of his best works. It covers the subject of personal enlightenment as only one who has been there could. It offers secret techniques to achieve a better understanding of your inner self and its relationship to the universe. A must read for anyone on the Path.

It's high time that Glendinning's Jimmy and Joe series got even just a little notice for the unknown treasure that it is. And "Jimmy and Joe Catch an Elephant" is a representative gem of the series. I have read it many times to each of my 3 children during their preschool years. They all loved it. It is a story of the mad cap antics of an elephant on the loose as 2 boys and the elephant keeper try to bring it back to the circus. The pictures by ('paintings') by Paul Frame are wonderfully life like. The book is imaginative, endearing and wholesome...perfect for the kids.

I purchased this book at my local supermarket clearance bin for $1.25.
My 6 year old son loves it so much he has had me read it to him every day since I got it last week.
The story is interesting and it comes with poster, map, and an audio CD which he loves to listen to.
The book is part of a collection by the African Wildlife Fund.
Now I have to get the rest of the collection for him. We are both looking forward to getting the other books (zebra, gorilla, lion, hippo, rhino, leopard, etc).
The same company (Soundprints) also has a great dinosaur collection.

Life as an Elephant, aka...

This wonderfully warm, humorous, entertaining and beautifully written book gives an overview of Jungian Psychology. That's right, warm, humorous, entertaining, beautifully written, and a psychology book. 'Jungian Psychology Unplugged: My Life as an Elephant' is comprised of six chapters. Chapter one addresses Jung's Basic model of Psychological Types. Chapter two deals with `Getting to know Yourself' and explains the basics of archetypes and complexes, persona, shadow... Chapter three, `The Unknown Other' is about projection and identification, including the challenges involved with intimacy and relationships. Chapter four deals with the `Anatomy of a Midlife Crisis' which is most often fueled by the need to develop a relationship with one's self, or with the unexpressed aspects of our personalities that have not been honored and given a voice earlier in life. In chapter five Daryl Sharp writes about 'The Analytical Experience,' including his own, which I found most refreshing. All to often, one will pick up a psychology or self-help book in hopes of finding a recipe to improve one's life. That's not what happens in Jungian Psychology Unplugged: My life as an Elephant. Instead, in vulnerable fashion, Daryl Sharp shares some of his more personal moments during the period when he was seeking council. The author well knows that another person's recipe is worthless when it comes to finding one's self and living an authentic life, and he doesn't pretend to be an authority and try to prove otherwise. Chapter six is about 'Psychological Development,' the process of becoming more conscious by developing a relationship to one's soul. Sharp addresses the need to be true to our vocations, our true callings in life, and venerates those who have the courage to do just this--listening and being true to one's inner voice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in living an authentic life, not just those who have an interest in Jung or psychology.

Daryl Sharp is the author of 17 books. He is also the General Editor of Inner City Books: Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analyst. Learn more about the entire list of Inner City Books at www.fisherkingpress.com

A POWERFUL MESSAGE, SWEETLY ILLUSTRATED. A SMILE OF A BOOK.

This book speaks to the hearts of children as well as adults. Mr. Poltarnees prefaces the book with the words, "The Kindness Book is blatantly moral." We all need reminders to do the right thing. The book accomplishes that mission with beauty and sensitivity so reflective of this author.

The book is small, a size that feels good in your hands. The words are powerful quotes; poignantly visual with pictures of babies, dogs, old and young people expressing kind acts. Using illustrations from the late eighteen-hundreds to the early nineteen-hundreds, one is immediately touched by such scenes as a child bringing a bouquet of flowers to a grandmother, or Mother Bunny administering first aid to Baby Bunny, wiping a tear away. The message I received was reflective and immediate. Kindness is powerful in its simplicity.

I have purchased additional copies of "The Kindness Book" to keep on hand as gifts for little visitors and sometimes even little visitors moms and dads. This book will touch your heart.

Like all of the authors creations, buying one is impossible, you must buy extra for giving. When you do KINDNESS multiplies.

A very creative and truly funny book about how the last elephant on earth hides from his pursuers. This is great! He disguises himself as the fifth head on Mount Rushmore, as a tank, periscope, and my favorite as part of Picaso's "Guernica". This is not a kid's book. And it is way above "Waldo" Excellent artist.

This is a book I loved when I was a child (in the 60's) and that I am now reading to my children. I love it for the old-fashioned 'french'iness (Babar drives an old citroen car, dinner is a mandatory family affair - even if a kid has fallen asleep beforehand etc). But my children (4 and 8) also love it, like the story line and always find something else to see and point out in the illustrations. (this review refers to the French edition)(Highschool french is sufficient though to translate on the spot)

This book has everything you could want in a children's storybook. It has a plot with humour and suspense and has beautiful artwook to go with it. Moreover, it makes excellent use of English at just the right comprehension level. It provides excellent examples of sentence construction while holding interest from page to page. My daughter and I love reading this book in the evening just before bed.

A Disturbing Beauty
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-03
The best book on the wildest of wild African game. This is a handsome book which takes the reader through perhaps the most densely populated big game reserve in Africa. The Chobe and Savuti are synonyms for wonderous African wildlife, and it's all here, in a text that is powerful and gripping in its expose of the lions' lordship over eveything (including hippo and elephants - this is a very good examination of the misunderstood and half-believed stories that some lions
routinely hunt the mega-game successfully)and the struggles of all to survive the caprices of the drought and unseasonal rains. There has not been a more intelligent and thorough description of the hunting techniques of lions. Be warned that the author's text and pictorial evidence of kills are unsentimental and make no attempt to play to the fantasies of lions efficiently killing with one sweep of a paw or expertly breaking the neck of prey. The buffalo and lion confrontations are very well documented. The Savuti lions customarily take on the belligerent bulls, unlike their cousins in other parts of Africa, and the writing spares no detail and respects the intelligence and curiosity of the reader.
All in all, the next best thing to a safari

Ely: My all-time favorite elephant...

Cynthia Moss' "Little Big Ears" is an endearing story of the struggles of Echo's robust young calf during his first year. It is an excellent portrayal of one little guy who beats all odds from the first few traumatic days of his life. An uplifting "tail" of elephant behavior that children can learn from, love and appreciate. I've recommended "Little Big Ears" to various elementary school teachers when asked what would be a good book about elephants to read and show pictures to their students. All have reported back that this book was thorougly enjoyed by their students. One drawback was the reluctancy of most teachers to show a picture of young Ely eating elephant dung (which is natural behavior for young calves). That is the only possibly negative thing teachers have told me when they used this book in the classroom. Myself, I believe it is necessary to show life as it is, the picture was not that offensive to me. Excellent plot and easy to follow and understand. Great photography by Colbeck.
