This book is like a treasure box. When opened it reveals the beauty of the midwest from an angle that not too many people
have thought of. The photographs make you look at structures in another way, thus opening up a whole new "treasure box" when
you begin seeing these architectural elements in real life no matter where you are--Midwest or not! It's even more exciting
to take a road trip and actually drive by these featured homes and buildings. This is a must for those renovating victorians, those
partial to victorians, and those interested in preserving the old structures in your town. If you are a RAGBRAI rider (The
Register's Great Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa)and have been captivated with the simple beauty of Iowa, this book will open
up yet another avenue of enjoyment as you proceed through the small towns of the state.

Incredible photography, a nicely written text, a good bit of history, and the fine condition of so many of these buildings
(mostly homes) make this an joy for anyone fond of architecture and a real treat for anyone seeking more knowledge of victorian
architecture.

David Li has written five books on Chinese Chess and all are essential reading for non-Chinese players unfamiliar with the
written Chinese. He writes clearly and concisely and the annotated games are well selected to provide clear instruction.

This (like all the other books in the series)is an excellent book. The elephant is very much the neglected piece.Often dismissed
or ignored by others. This book proves them wrong. The many subtle uses of the elephant are described in detail in the quiet
opening ,the mid-game and its often crucial role in the end game. The elephant is MUCH more than just a defensive piece and
this book teaches you how to use it to full advantage. One of the best books i have ever bought.

This is a really sweet book. My 22-month-old loves it. It is written in the style of 1,2, buckle my shoe, and some of the
text is a little bit awkward if you're thinking of that while reading, but it didn't seem to bother my daughter. Overall
this is a great book that I enjoy reading to my little one. Nice illustrations and sweet text (I love you all the way up
to ten and back down again).

If you enjoy political satire at its best, you must read this book!
I read it first as a high school student during the Vietnam era when my friend lent it to me.
I had searched for it off and on over the years and finally found it via Amazon. The characterization of political nonsense and power still holds true today. GREAT SATIRE. GREAT BOOK!

PACHYDERMS ARE PRECIOUS...

This is a wonderful, well-written book about elephants and their role throughout history, as well as their present state in
the world. I confess, I did not know much about elephants before reading this book. I now feel I know something about them,
and what I have discovered is fascinating. I did not realize how complex and intelligent these magnificent creatures are,
nor how dangerously close to extinction they have become. It would, indeed, be tragic were that to happen, for elephants are
sociable, sentient, and intelligent.
The author takes the reader on a tour throughout history, describing the elephant's interaction with humanity and its role in the affairs of mankind and its impact on the environment. The book traces the influence of the elephant and the various uses to which mankind has put this great creature. From being used as a conveyance in times of war, to being paraded as an object of wonder and curiosity, to being hunted down mercilessly for its ivory tusks, the elephant has had a somewhat checkered history in terms of its interaction with human beings.
The author also carefully relates the elephant's own social structure, which is a sophisticated and complex one. Their mating rituals, their family life, and their handling of death are all addressed by the author, who paints a picture of a multi-faceted and remarkable society of elephants. It is only in the twentieth century that its complexity has begun to be understood by man. It is hoped that this is not a case of too little, too late.
Unfortunately for the elephant, however, its positive qualities have taken a backseat to its value as a commodity. Elephant tusks may eventually bring about the demise of the entire species, if the world does not take heed. A portion of this book is devoted to the ivory wars that have decimated the great elephant herds of Africa, turning elephants into an endangered species. Were elephants to be driven to extinction by pure, unadulterated greed, it truly would be tragic. This book effectively drives that point home.

Who hasn't dreamed of Africa or longed to protect its amazing and endangered creatures? Through the eyes of a reflective child,
the reader learns of the dangers that face Africa's national treasures; the majestic elephant, the fierce lion and the mountain
gorilla. This beautifully illustrated book inspires readers both young and old to value and preserve the wildlife of Africa
for all future generations. African Dream would be a great addition to any library and would make a wonderful gift.

African Elephants is a great book for young readers. It covers basic characteristics and habits. For example, "African Elephants
travel in groups. A group of elephants is called a herd." (p.18) There are about two sentences in large text on each left
hand page with a good quality photo on the right page. New words are listed in a glossary and are in bold font in the text.
There is also a short list of other resources (print and web) and an index. Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book

Up to now I've been to East Africa 3 times. I still regret not having bought Kunkel's book "Ngorongoro" the first time I
saw it. I've got quite a few photography and painting books on Afircan wildlife but still regard Kunkel's pictures to be
the most stunning. He has crossed far over merely documenting wildlife and his immense artistic talents are fully shown
in the pictures. Fortunately, unlike "Ngorongoro" (now out of print), the publisher of "African Elephant" has decided to
reprint this title. Highly recommended. A must for all interested in African wildlife and/or wildlife photography.

A Great Book for Giggles!

My daughters and I read this book each night at bed-time and always end up giggling like wild! This unique and wonderful
story is told completely by pictures. It is a story about an elephant who buys a bouquet of posies and is, unfortunately,
quite allergic! An elephant sneeze is a mighty powerful sneeze! It causes quite a ruckus and involves not only an elephant
but also a mouse, a rhinoceros, an owl, and a hippopotamus. The details of the pictures and the facial expressions make
it easy to "write" your own story. We just love it! This is a great book to spark imaginations and create lasting memories!
