I came upon this book while looking for information on wild animal trainers to research a fiction work I'm planning to write. This book not only gave me a good impression of what it's like to train a wild animal that is also your close companion, but also made me laugh out loud. Imagine a frightened pet that insists on sleeping with in your bed with you--not a cat or dog but an elephant, which is crowding your spouse out of bed! This book is full of lively anecdotes that, with a little adapting, could also make a great children's book or comic movie. Fun for anyone who likes animals.

I grew up in the same town the Hammonds (and Ashby's) lived in when they "adopted" Mignon. I was fortunate enough to babysit the elephant and many of the other animals in their menagarie. I didn't realize a book was written about this animal loving family & their "adventures"! I lost touch with them when the moved to a bigger farm but never forgot them. The funny thing is that as a child this seemed so normal to me, I neglected to document it with pictures. They were a unique family and it was a wonderful experience being involved with them all....Kathy (Mills) O'Boyle

Well Done History of Elephant Hunting

This is a well-written book that covers the history of elephant hunting, provides biographical sketches of some of Africa's prominent elephant hunters, relates the author's own elephant hunting experiences, and discusses the animal and its conservation as well. I enjoyed it and felt that I learned a lot. Sanchez-Arino is unquestionably one of the most experienced elephant hunters of modern time, and any serious student of African hunting should spend some time with this book.

This is a magnificent book. I first saw it at my local library. I fell in love with it and ordered a copy for my home library. It is a magnificently produced compendium about elephant knowledge and lore that is probably unique for being contained in one volume. And--you can't beat the price for such a beautiful book. Highly recommended.

This book is great for children. It teaches them to help other people and to give of themselves. My 6 year old daughter loves reading all the Elmer stories. She especially enjoys,Wilmer and his ventiloquist act.

Awesome, just awesome!

If you have a little elephant lover in your house then by all means, buy this book! It is the cutest thing I've ever seen and I'm glad to find out that there's more of Elmer than just this book. I about lost it when I opened it to read to my little one and saw a patchwork elephant who was trying to help a little baby elephant find his lost teddy bear. Then his cousin Wilbur was introduced and he is a black-and-white patchwork elephant. Okay, then I did lose it - I was really laughing at this book because it is just adorable. What an imagination! When Elmer and Wilbur (don't you just love those names too?! Cute!) find the lost teddy and return him, they also indicate that you don't have to be different to be special in the end. It's just very, very cute and lends a bunch to a child's imagination. We had to read this one a bunch of times tonight. What a great, great book!

My 3 years and 9 months old loves it, and more importantly I LOVE IT! It's one of those few books that I as a parent am so pleased to be asked to read. Brightly and intelligently illustrated. Good story line. Fun, fun, fun.

Upbeat fun even for two-year olds

My two-year old loves the bright bold illustrations of Elmer the patchwork elephant, his five gray elephant friends and their bright blue tag-along birds. The story is fun and playful, however, the text is a too wordy for my daughter to follow. I paraphrase the story when reading it to her, but it is fine for a four-year olds as recommended.

I like the fun, upbeat story which includes a lesson on relativitiy (it may feel cool today, but it's warm compared to the snow) and a little trick by Elmer which adds interest for young readers.

I purchased this book 8 years ago when my son was a toddler - it was a favorite which we read over and over and over... The rhyme and fun deliver a wonderful message with colorful, action-packed illustrations. Now I am trying to purchase it for a friend having a baby, and sadly, I am unable to find a new copy. If you have a copy, HOLD ON TO IT!!

Read this on a rainy day
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-20
It's not easy to write a review for a book of poems. I will honestly say this book is not for everyone. Actually, God Noise is totally different than any kind of poetry I've ever read before. Don't let that scare you away. With the popularity of spoken word and performance, it's good to be reminded that poetry can be gentle, quirky, and unapologetically experimental. Unlike many experimental works, however, these poems do not seem pointless.

By creating a book that doesn't condescend, but instead makes the audience exercise their curiosity, Daniels has created something special. It's hard to say exactly what this book is about. Something is happening, but Daniels has a distinctive way of keeping us outside of the events. I agree it can be elusive on some levels, but I'm still giving it five stars. The language is deceptively simple. I thought the ending was clear (and sad.) I even love the individual titles! This is a book you can read over and over on a rainy day.

Graceful

This modest-looking collection of poems is wonderfully readable. It took me a while to figure out what the author was doing because the book is not meant to be read quickly. The poems can be read in sequence to create a haunting story without a clear start and end.

Each poem works with the others to create a strange montage. The "story" is retold from different points in time, different perspectives in seemingly independent poems. This unconventional approach to story-telling is actually quite good. I didn't have a hard time getting into the plot and adjusting to the author's style. There's a sameness from poem to poem, and at its most challenging parts, the voices seem vague and detached. At its best, it is deeply personal and undeniably moving. Be patient. The result is rewarding.

The author of this book has done an excellant job of providing detail descriptions of life in the 1940's for this particular family. Interesting story about traveling to Alaska and all the humorous and sad experiences they had. Makes you really appreciate the ease of travel today. A book all high school students should read to obtain a better perspective on the true American History.

Hansa: The True Story Of An Asian Elephant Baby is a remarkable picturebook for young readers about a baby elephant born in the Woodland Park Zoo. Children will learn that Hansa was 235 pounds when born and by her first birthday had gained almost 800 pounds! Filled cover to cover with true facts about elephants and splendid color photographs from the Woodland Park Zoo, Hansa is very highly recommended for young people who want to learn more about this wondrous, exotic animal species.

Even though this book is really written for older children, my 17-month-old son loves it too! We don't read the words to him, but he loves to look at the pictures and make elephant sounds. As he gets older, I'm sure he'll appreciate the information more, and my husband and I find it very interesting too.

The book is very well written and the pictures are great. I highly recommend it for all ages, especially if you have an elephant fan of your own at home!
