I have an old, torn-apart version of this book, and I absolutely adore it. Iit's a beautiful colleection of short stories from Asia that are really entertaining, cute and clever. And it's not too long. A great children's book.

This book is about a small boy who's elephant is taken from him by the Emperor. In order to get his elephant back, the Emperor challenges the boy and his village to come up with the elephant's exact weight. The boy lives a simple life but is not to simple to outsmart the Emperor. The challenge was believed to be an impossible one, however the boy uses basic logic to come up with a method to weigh the elephant and is reunited with the elephant after providing his correct weight to the Emperor. The book is touching and thought provoking and the art work is excellent as well. A book I would highly recommend for your children.

Propriety through pachyderm party participation!

Another delightful book by Sonia Levitin. This one is on party etiquette for young kids. Fun and silly illustrations get the point across as elephant gets ready to go to her first party.

The book starts with elephant's friend asking if she can bring a guest to Brenda's birthday party. When she gets the okay the preparations begin! Next there are many questions and answer opportunities regarding the proper attire to wear and what sort of gift to bring.

Some of the topics discussed include: How to get ready for the party and what type of manners you should exhibit when you bring a guest (stay close, introduce your friend and say something pleasant about your friend) and tongue-in-cheek discussions of how you should behave when introduced to the adults, if you break something, swing on the drapes and other wild animal behavior!

Taking turns, sharing, not being greedy, leaving pets alone, not snooping, washing hands after you use the toilet and saying Thank You are some of the other important points covered. The book even discusses that your gift stays with the birthday person!

The illustrations of elephant are charming with her apprehensive and excited looks -- and her pink bow worn especially for the party. A great read for small kids. Teaches manners and what to expect at a party.

Lessons in manners disguised as a humorous story.

Young children will delight in the story of elephant's first invitation to a party and they will also learn social graces and etiquette along the way. In your face illustrations are as big as the party-going Pachyderm and will have your children squealing with joy at her preparations. A clever story that will hold your child's attention and pass on a few social graces at the same time.

A delightful choice for reading with kids

This cleverly illustrated book is a cute story with few words per page, which is great for my two year old. We have checked it out from the library so much that I am now going to buy it. She is learning new vocabulary, for example "scurries". Tonight I turned the pages while she told me the story, word for word. As an early childhood educator I am impressed with the vocabulary, the animation depicted in the illustrations, and the joy it brings to my child and I.

I read Woolly Mammoth.
I though it was interesting because it tells you how they found it.
It talked about how they found and got the mammoths out of the middle of nowhere.
I think kids in grade 4 would enjoy this book.
I recommend this book because it is really interesting.

During the summer of 1997 a young boy discovered mammoth tusks sticking out of the tundra in Siberia. This book documents the efforts of a team of scientists from around the world to remove the mammoth from the permafrost. Information about the behavior, migration, and extinction of mammoths is included. Photographs from the expedition, diagrams, and maps round out the text. The text also raises the question of whether or not it would be ethical to clone mammoths if it became scientifically possible. The ultimate answer is left to the student. This book would be a great addition to any middle school library.

This book is an excellent resource for the classroom
teacher of upper elementary students. Not only are there
numerous interesting & little known facts about the various
types of Mammoths, but one of the participants in the recent
Zarkov excavation shares every facet of the two-year
expedition to unearth a Mammoth that has been preserved for
23,000 years! The photos in this book are excellent, and it
serves as a companion to the Discovery video "Raising the
Mammoth." My fifth graders actually loved this documentary,
and were delighted that the book includes much of the same
information along with bits of trivia about these mysterious
creatures. My students are constantly passing this book
around to share with each other. This is AMAZING because they
don't like to read! I highly recommend this book for its
educational value. You won't be disappointed!

She elaborated the story very well. It was like you could actually see yourself in the mansion. She keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see whats happening next. There is a little bit of humor that mixes well into the story. The characters are described to leave nothing to the imagination. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

This picture book is nicely illustrated and has a nice message for children. (Nice messages in picture books seem harder to find these days.) It is a story of a young elephant who wants to pick leaves for breakfast all by herself. The message to children is that it is good to try new things and be a little independent. However, while they are young they can still use a little help from their parents. A parents help in conjunction with a child's determination makes for a good combination.

This little book is packed with answers to emotions that our little ones experienced in the uncertain days after 911. In a very sensitive way, it gives children a safe way to explore their feelings about 911 without being political or ignoring the enormity of 911.
It was read cover to cover in this house in little more than one sitting. It holds your attention that well. I would highly recommend it for your child.

I read this in two days, it was hard to put down. Get ready for lots of action and deep connection with the main character Jay Bonet. There are all kinds of surprises in this novel. It is reminiscent of a coming-of-age book I read long ago called Catcher in the Rye.

Another book I bought that I enjoyed is Twilight.Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)

Elephants you Fall in Love with

This is the most detailed book I have found on Elephants. It not only informs you all about the elephants history, it tells you all about the Authors many many years living with them and getting to know each one personally. You are glued to the pages and will not want to put it down. It is so captivating that you actually feel as if you are there with the Douglas-Hamilton family. You become involved with each elephant's life. How they are each an individual just like us. How each has their own personality. This is riviting !!! There are parts that you will laugh with, and cry with, as well. If this does not touch your heart, does not open your eyes to the beauty of one of God's most magnificent creatures put on this earth, and enlighten you to the desperate need to help protect these wonderful animals, then this is not the book for you. I highly recommend this for all ages. A MUST read for anyone who loves elephants!!

This book is one of the greatest pieces on elephants ever read, the pace is swift and makes you not want to put the book down. I have always have been interested in elephants and read everything I could on them, and one day last summer I saw "Among the Elephants" at a small library in a suburb of my town, and before I returned it I had read it twice. The book was so good that I wanted to read it many more times, so instead of constantly checking it out I decided to buy it, so others could read it. This book was wonderful and should be read by anyone who wishes to work with elephants, or by those that just want a good book to read.

A Father Christmas

Review Date: 2001-11-24
This book was originally published in 1940 and the end notes tell us that it was the last one written by Jean de Brunhoff before his untimely death at age 37. The story and line drawings were finished but the illustrations still needed to be colored. Jean's brother took care of that with the help of Jean's son who was only 12 years old when his father died. I like the fact that Jean's son had a hand in the coloring of this wonderful story of a father's love and special efforts on behalf of his children at Christmastime.
This book has all the lively and humorous characteristics of the other Babar the Elephant stories, the brightly colored, warm and friendly drawings of our beloved elephant royalty, the antics and adventures of the elephants themselves and of course, our hero, King Babar once again, saving the day, in this book, a most important day, Christmas!
Arthur, Pom, Flora and Alexander, the royal elephant children , together with their monkey pal, Zephir, write Father Christmas a wish list letter and are disappointed when they don't get a reply. This ultimately leads to Babar's realization that the Elephants' Country needs to be included in Santa's regular route, so he goes to heroic lengths to make his childrens' wishes come true. Babar and Father Christmas become fast friends and Father Christmas even gets to take a much needed rest in the tropical climate of Babar's country. The way de Brunhoff has drawn Father Christmas is quirky and jolly and rather different from the image we have of him today but entirely captures the essence of this wonderful holiday icon. If you have loved other Babar stories or if this is your first, you are sure to love it and make it a part of your Christmas tradition.
