I suspect only economists with a strong interest in property rights theory analyzed from the perspective of modern institutional economics will like this book. It's not for the average reader who isn't willing to do some hard slogging to understand key theoretical ideas. But there are few who can match Barzel's understanding of the development of "enforcement" or "governance" institutions that both facilitate - and limit - the potential gains for specialization and exchange that neoclassical economics takes for granted.

The protector or ruler is assumed to be self-seeking. Individuals will install a protector only after they create institutions to control him. Organized protection engenders legal institutions that enforce rights. A "state of nature" then gradually turns into a rule-of-law state. Individuals employ both the state and other third parties for enforcement. The fraction of agreements that the state enforces determines its scope. Rule-of-law states encourage market transactions and standards that facilitate trade. The larger the domain of the state's ultimate enforcer, the greater the advantage of scale economies to contracting. This force may explain the creation of rule-of-law empires.0521597137Economic Analysis of Property Rights (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions)0521671345Institutions and the Path to the Modern Economy: Lessons from Medieval Trade (Political Economy of Institutions and Decisions)0393334171The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict0465016154The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else0521855268Economic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books2587Economic Conditions2581Economics3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books11086History & Theory11079Politics53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books11083General11079Politics53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books713490011General AAS11079Politics53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books16022631General16022621Political Science11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books713501011General AAS16022621Political Science11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB0006RV6XWhttp://www.amazon.com/Identification-economies-stochastic-production-environment/dp/B0006RV6XW%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0006RV6XWRita E CurtisUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishDept. of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, Agricultural Experiment Station, North Dakota State University13Book2001Dept. of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, Agricultural Experiment Station, North Dakota State UniversityDept. of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, Agricultural Experiment Station, North Dakota State UniversityIdentification of economies of scope in a stochastic production environment (AAE staff paper)0000002592General355577011Popular Economics3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713066011General AAS355577011Popular Economics3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155BooksB0008SD8MGhttp://www.amazon.com/Banking-generalized-functional-estimation-economies/dp/B0008SD8MG%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0008SD8MG6631627Colin LawrenceDigitalThe Gale GroupHTMLEnglish595USD$5.95Ohio State University Press11Book1989-08-01Ohio State University Press2005-07-28Ohio State University PressBanking costs, generalized functional forms and estimation of economies of scale and scope.: An article from: Journal of Money, Credit & Banking595USD$5.95100011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewcB2ivHpF66rOSLzhg2wSqZMPKvUuT44bZV4V696uJ%2BRU8ho3tTPZWabK1c%2BMYMrRGXjrYMK8%2FeRn2NSNGz5Zf6eVxm5dk9gW595USD$5.95Available for download nowThis digital document is an article from Journal of Money, Credit & Banking, published by Ohio State University Press on August 1, 1989. These findings rule out scope economies and U-shaped cost curves. The rejection of the generalized flexible form postulated by the above authors is necessary but not a sufficient condition to justify a Cobb-Douglas specification. Using restricted generalized functional forms, we find that the composite output of Cobb-Douglas specification is an inadequate description of banking and cost technology. Translog specifications with multiple products capture the data best suggesting the presence of both scope and scale economies. The objective of this paper is to examine how to scale-up Pakistani banking efficiency through operational specialization and diversification, and size expansion. The estimated cost structure indicates that state-owned commercial banks are large enough, while development financial institutions and private banks can expect to obtain cost-saving advantages by expanding their operations. Since scope economies are significant, portfolio diversification generally increases bank profits. In addition, privatized banks are the most efficient, followed by foreign and private banks. Public banks are the least efficient. 318593011Elsevier583314By Publisher551440eDocs504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books1000Subjects1Arts & Photography2Biographies & Memoirs3Business & Investing4Children's Books4366Comics & Graphic Novels5Computers & Internet6Cooking, Food & Wine86Entertainment301889Gay & Lesbian10Health, Mind & Body9History48Home & Garden10777Law17Literature & Fiction13996Medicine18Mystery & Thrillers53Nonfiction290060Outdoors & Nature20Parenting & Families173507Professional & Technical21Reference22Religion & Spirituality23Romance75Science25Science Fiction & Fantasy26Sports28Teens27Travel283155Books699209011HTML618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB0006QXYF6http://www.amazon.com/Enterprise-developing-Business-International-business/dp/B0006QXYF6%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0006QXYF6Frederick E BalderstonUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishProduced and distributed by Center for Research in ManagementBook1992Produced and distributed by Center for Research in ManagementProduced and distributed by Center for Research in ManagementEnterprise scale and scope in the the [sic] developing economy (Business & public policy working paper [i.e. International business working paper])0000002747General2741Small Business & Entrepreneurship3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713070011General AAS2741Small Business & Entrepreneurship3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155BooksB000RQYKX0http://www.amazon.com/Choosing-among-alternative-function-specifications/dp/B000RQYKX0%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000RQYKX0http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QYS7E08SL._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QYS7E08SL._SL160_.jpg160118http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QYS7E08SL.jpg500368M. The estimates from a multi-product Composite cost function [Rev. Econ. The results show that the composite model provides a better description of data and highlight the presence of global scope and scale economies for the 'median' firm of the sample. 318593011Elsevier583314By Publisher551440eDocs504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books1000Subjects1Arts & Photography2Biographies & Memoirs3Business & Investing4Children's Books4366Comics & Graphic Novels5Computers & Internet6Cooking, Food & Wine86Entertainment301889Gay & Lesbian10Health, Mind & Body9History48Home & Garden10777Law17Literature & Fiction13996Medicine18Mystery & Thrillers53Nonfiction290060Outdoors & Nature20Parenting & Families173507Professional & Technical21Reference22Religion & Spirituality23Romance75Science25Science Fiction & Fantasy26Sports28Teens27Travel283155Books699209011HTML618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB0006QRT6Ghttp://www.amazon.com/Competitiveness-transition-economies-appreciation-working/dp/B0006QRT6G%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0006QRT6GKorneÌlia KrajnyaÌkUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishInternational Monetary Fund, Research Dept55Book1997International Monetary Fund, Research DeptInternational Monetary Fund, Research DeptCompetitiveness in transition economies: What scope for real appreciation? A short-run translog cost function is estimated using monthly time-series data in which pension/compensation expenses are regarded as a quasi-fixed factor, and the variables of operating characteristics for freight and passenger services are incorporated. Our results show technological change in the Taiwan Railway is not Hick's neutral, and both economies of scale and scope are present. Further, TFP growth has improved in recent years and is mainly driven by technological progress and scale economies. 318593011Elsevier583314By Publisher551440eDocs504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books1000Subjects1Arts & Photography2Biographies & Memoirs3Business & Investing4Children's Books4366Comics & Graphic Novels5Computers & Internet6Cooking, Food & Wine86Entertainment301889Gay & Lesbian10Health, Mind & Body9History48Home & Garden10777Law17Literature & Fiction13996Medicine18Mystery & Thrillers53Nonfiction290060Outdoors & Nature20Parenting & Families173507Professional & Technical21Reference22Religion & Spirituality23Romance75Science25Science Fiction & Fantasy26Sports28Teens27Travel283155Books699209011HTML618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB000PAUHW6http://www.amazon.com/Digital-identity-attributes-identifiers-Information/dp/B000PAUHW6%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000PAUHW6http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YCXWBW4XL._SL75_.jpg7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YCXWBW4XL._SL160_.jpg160116http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YCXWBW4XL.jpg500364M.L. It uses conjoint analysis survey techniques to develop empirical data on how users value the attributes of online identifiers. It is concerned in particular with three issues: (1) the degree to which identified subjects value increasing the scope of an identifier, i.e., the ability to use a single identifier to access services offered by several organizations; (2) the degree to which users' choice may be constrained by switching costs; and (3) the value individuals place on privacy and data security relative to other attributes such as cost or scope. The survey population was located in South Korea. The results indicate that e-mail addresses dominate the world of online identifiers for ordinary consumers; that consumers highly value increased scope (e.g., single sign-on capabilities) and the security of their private data; and that switching costs are high. 318593011Elsevier583314By Publisher551440eDocs504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books562770Management509382Business & Investing497642Subjects551440eDocs504358Formats251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books2683Management2675Management & Leadership3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books699209011HTML618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB0006YCJ9Ahttp://www.amazon.com/Economies-Discussion-economics-Woodrow-International/dp/B0006YCJ9A%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0006YCJ9AJohn C PanzarUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishWoodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton UniversityBook1981Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton UniversityWoodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton UniversityEconomies of scope (Discussion papers in economics / Woodrow wilson School of Public and International Affairs)0000001000Subjects1Arts & Photography2Biographies & Memoirs3Business & Investing4Children's Books4366Comics & Graphic Novels5Computers & Internet6Cooking, Food & Wine86Entertainment301889Gay & Lesbian10Health, Mind & Body9History48Home & Garden10777Law17Literature & Fiction13996Medicine18Mystery & Thrillers53Nonfiction290060Outdoors & Nature20Parenting & Families173507Professional & Technical21Reference22Religion & Spirituality23Romance75Science25Science Fiction & Fantasy26Sports28Teens27Travel283155Books
