Given the breadth of the issues covered, the abundance of sources, and the insightfulness of analysis, this is probably as good as it gets in terms of scholarly writings about Central Asia these days. Unlike many of his western colleagues, Sievers is multi-lingual, and he takes full advantage of this: his coverage of sources is virtually unprecedented in the English-language literature on the region. Although written by a lawyer, this book is not a legal treatise. A sweeping account of the great expectations nurtured in the region in the early 1990s and the grand failures that ensued thereafter, this volume is a true eye-opener for the Anglophone public as well as a useful addition to the personal library of a student and a scholar alike. Whether he deals with civil society reforms or environmental regimes, Sievers is thoughtful and encyclopedic about his subject. Not only does he describe the experience of Central Asian states during their first decade of independence with enviable insight and commendable accuracy, but he also unhesitatingly challenges the many myths so uncritically popularized by other scholars. The fact that it is easily readable adds further value to Sievers' work.

To help understand the complexity of organized crime and how it effects all of us, this is a must read. Cleveland's roots in the Labor Unions, the Jewish Crime Syndicate and modern day Mafia runs deep and Friedman was bold enough to discuss his trials and tribulations within those ranks. Schwarz captures Friedman's struggles with betrayal amongst his "family" and his quest to ultimately do the right thing. Allen Friedman was not one to pull punches- he tells it like it was.

Absolutely required reading for anyone wishing to learn more about labor unions or engage in the organized labor debate. The 1984 publication date makes the book slightly outdated, but the arguments still remain valid. Succinctly written by a leading mind in the field of labor relations, Reynolds uses rigorous empirical analysis to form his arguments. While the arguments are supported with strong academic reasoning, the book is approachable and provides a sound overview for anyone interested in learning more about the history, laws, and economic effects of labor unions.

Thsi book was written by people from the AFL-CIO. It details the way to conduct an organizing campaign with your head held high, speaking to the "angels of our better nature" in Lincoln's words. There is an emphasis on on-the-ground tactics and interpersonal skills and phraseology used by activists and organizers, very nuts-and-bolts description of different phases of a campaign.

I heard that people in the religious right were studying Saul Alinsky with a view toward getting a handle on how to organize a community. They shoudl have also been studying this as well.

Now, unions get a bad rap in some quarters, but the bald fact is, we would not have an American middle class without them, nor would we have minimum wage, child labor laws, social security, and a long list of other things that have improved the lives of all of us. This book presents a way to sell a union from a positive point of view, and a way to use principles of American democracy that apply to everyone, in favor of improving our lives. This book captures an effective counter to the usual fear, divisiveness and mistrust sown by management.

I can't help but think that the recent victory by Barak Obama took so many ideas and principles about how to run a campaign, out of this book and the tradition it represents.

This is an amazing book. I could not put it down. If you are going to read only one book on trading Blocs....make it this one. Well written with a unique prose style and an easy to read font, it will make you laugh, it will make you cry, but most it will touch you in a way that few economics books can. It truly is an enjoyable read, and will make you an expert on the subject at hand. Get it, read it, and use the knowledge wisely. Attilio Stajano's book has been published at the time of the finalization of the Council of Ministers' agreement on the 7th EU Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration (2007-2013).
