I'm a computer guy working at a biotech and wanted to know more about what the guys in the coats are doing. This book is a very good introduction for those with a science bent.

I especially enjoyed reading about the Bohr model of the atom (which is what I learned in school) only to have it totally dissed after 3/4ths of a page as inadequate!

I don't know how well it works as a class room text (this is night-time reading for me) but for a enjoyable well written text on Biochemistry this is an excellent choice.

I enjoyed reading Civil War in the American Workplace, regarding the nature and interplay of different behavorial profiles at work. In clear passages sprinkled with keen insights and humor, the example of human relations profiled became so familiar and informative.
The metaphor of the battlefield is particularly apt for illustrating the points throughout the book. It reminds us that the concept of business strategy evolved from the study of war, and that those who contribute most to the success of any strategy -- the people employed in the organization -- derive their roles and behaviors from the same tradition. Whether one's battles are fought with real soldiers or toy ones, the book's engaging analysis will be a valuable guide to each reader.

She helped me understand human behavior.

Civil War in the American Workplace by Dr. Linda Rosene sheds light on why there is conflict, turmoil and disagreement between individuals and groups. The primary focus is work situations. However, it is applicable to all aspects of human interaction.
Differences in individuals can be viewed as a drawback. "Why can't everyone be like me...this would be a perfect world." Dr. Rosene shows another side to this thought.
Behavior traits can be suppressed, beaten, bent but not changed. Dr. Rosene demonstrates how people can and do put effort into beating or bending. On the other hand, we can recognize behavior and effectively channel it to where people are comfortable and productive at work. When this occurs, employees attain an acceptable degree of satisfaction. When the job fits the employee, turnover is not a problem.
Behavior is predictable. Once we realize this, we are a step closer to recognizing our behavior and that of others. Differences may result in conflicts or they can be nurtured and turned into opportunities where they can be complimentary. The empowered don't resent differences; they realize that differences are necessary to achieve growth and the consequences that accompany it. Dr. Rosene demonstrates the four personality characteristics in an effective analogy supported bypractical examples. She paints a picture to help the reader identify the players and understand that conflict doesn't have to be the natural consequence.

This book is a great read and it does what it says. It helps you to see things in perspective and make real, positive change. The steps are easy to understand and practical but it also seems to be well researched and backed up with sound psychological theory. I would also recommend it to anyone working as a business or life coach as I think it explains the fundamentals very well.

This book was so much more than one would think by looking at the cover. It doesn't look like much, but as they say, don't judge a book by it's cover, because this little book is packed with a step by step plan for making improvements in whatever area of life you would like. One couldn't help but make positive change following the guidelines in this book. There is no fluff to wade through. The authors have pulled together information from a multitude of sources and made one concise, straight forward resource. I just finished reading it, and can't wait to start putting it to good use.

As a coastal manager it's really hard to find information that presents good theoretical stuff next to down to earth examples. It's usually one or the other. This book has both right in one spot. This book lives on my desk, not on the bookshelf!

i thoroughly enjoyed this book. content is based on the direction of coastal management and implementation of planning mechanisms around the globe. the text is supported with case studies from locations all around the globe, providing a global analysis. the style of writing is very informative, with exceptional detail - and quoting sources to allow confirmation of the text content. it is quite clear that both authors are extremely active and interested in the field of coastal management, with a 'hands-on' approach taken with each of the case studies included. a nice touch, is the use of images and diagrams to highlight certain aspects, providing ease of understanding - these thoroughly supporting the text. this book takes a step by step approach to introduce the reader to the complex issues and intricacies involved with coastal management and planning, opening the door to the next century. a thoroughly enjoyable read - definitely recommended!!

Ok I knew the author Steve Mott years ago when we worked togeter at the AT&T Sourcebook. The way it is written reflects his personality. Funny most of the time but serious others. It is very good and pretty much sums up college life.

I bought this book for my brother who is entering college this year. The book is an excellent summarization of all the advice an entering college student needs (I know since I just finished college). It has both serious and fun advice, following the format of Life's Little Instruction Book (Jackson Brown). I recommend it for any friend, relative, or parent of a college freshman!!

This is probably the most quoted book on the history of the Shenandoah Valley. It was a landmark publication debunking the myth of self-sufficient farming in the Shenandoah Valley. Commercialism was an important part of Valley life. Modern scholars now realize what an important contribution this book was to the history of western Virginia. I have been trying to obtain a copy of this book for more than a year. If you are a serious student of Virginia history, this book is perhaps one of the most important studies of the Shenandoah Valley ever written. I would even be happy with a xerox copy of the book. rdmartin

This may be a life changing book. The rules are simple. Do not try the unusual to get ahead. Be extremely good at your work and follow the conventions of the workplace. Advancement most often takes time, is not a quick jump up the ladder by calling attention to yourself.

The real story of how to get ahead
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-14
This book is an unknown classic. It tells the real way to get ahead in a large bureaucracy. Most of the Tom Peters type books on success in business deal with the 2 percent of companies that are run by a great, innovative leader. The other 98% are the real world in which many frustrated managers create mini-fiefdoms where they yield power and stifle productivity. This book is funny but it provides real insights into how to navigate up the ladder of business. I have a MBA and have read many of the top inspirational business books and this is the best, most practical book on how to get ahead in the real world that I have read. It is a one of a kind, I strongly recommend it. The author is a Ph.D who worked for the Ford Motor Company. Very funny.

Dawson goes over many concepts that are common sense such as realizing the qualities of a good decision-maker, finding categories for decisions. I found it helpful for students taking courses on general OR/MS. The author provides a guideline to categorize the decision problems. Is it a problem or an opportunity you must decide upon this distinction is important. Do you really have to make a decision at all?

Dawson emphasizes something that students must learn what is OR/MS is all about. One must have access to information to be able to understand the problem and make a decision. The author also emphasizes at length the importance of intuitive decision making as well as logical decision making. Both are equally important for any decision. I feel that, while students know how to do it logically, this book helps them to understand it even better. Successfully decision-making is not a talent but a 'learned skill' composed of 'concentrated though'' and 'rapid reasoning powers'. His predictable formula for reaching the best decisions and solutions combines analysis, synthesis and judgment and requires developing a sense of timing and ability to handle uncertainty and elements of risk.

The book contains interesting topics categorized into twelve chapters: The Qualities of a Good Decision Maker; Categorizing the Decision; Blueprinting the Decision; Intuitive Decision Making; Developing Rapid Reasoning; Expanding Your Options; Logical Decision Making; Reaction Tables and Decision Trees; Huddling; Barriers to Confident Decisions; Styles of Decision Making; The Nine Traits of Great Decision Makers; and The 21-Day Plan for Confident Decision Makers. Dawson lists seven steps to confident decision making, these are: Accurately categorize the situation so you start looking for the solution in the right decision. Blueprint the problem accurately, so your mind totally focuses on the problem it has to solve. Saturate your mind with facts about the problem. Position your mind for Rapid Reasoning by shutting down the left brain and stimulating the right. Move away from the problem, either physically or mentally, so your mind can view it objectively. Increase your options through a checklist of ten creative possibilities. The last step is illustrated in the book by several examples which show that often our intuition lets us down and we make sub-optimal decisions. Some decisions require for the most part, logic. Dawson uses the same example most instructors use in classrooms that of the coin toss. He describes using the coin toss to help make a decision, if only to see how you really feel about the outcome of the coin toss. He suggests making a list of the many possibilities, rating those possibilities on a scale of 1 to 10.

The author discusses reaction tables and decision trees in chapter 8. He uses a very good example of whether or not to build a house on a piece of land he owns. This decision becomes extremely complicated with costs rising or falling, different house styles, falling in love with someone who hates the house, etc? 'Decision Tree enables you to break down decision so that you can manager uncertainty more effectively. As you develop your tree of options, you need to accurately predict the likelihood of something happening or nor happening. That's where the science of probabilities comes into play. Dawson stresses the importance of showing the likelihood of an out come happening on a decision tree. Finally I would like to leave you with Dawson's 'Good' Decision Makers: Having a high tolerance for ambiguity, having a well-ordered sense of priorities, being a good listener, always building the consensus around a decision, avoiding stereotypes, always remaining resilient, being comfortable with both soft and hard input, being realistic about cost and difficulty, and avoiding a decision minefield. Overall, I have come to value the idea and usefulness of making decision using logical tools such as decision trees. I recommend 'The Confident decision Maker' for everyone interested to know what OR/MS is all about.

This was a great book that gave a step by step management system to assist in getting your financial matters in good order while dealing with the economic and psychological effects of losing your job or dealing with a downturn in the economy. Topics that were covered included rent strategies, dealing with credit card debt and bill collectors and simple ways to save money when you are unemployed. There is also a section that touches on compiling a resume and offers suggestions and strategies for a more successful job interview. I am glad that this book is on the market. My son just lost his job and I intend to get him a copy as well.

David Schwerin has brought fresh, new insights into a business model primarily concerned with power and greed to one based on caring and ethics. His years of experience and his wisdom and understanding propose a timely new model which will provide healing to each individual touched by business procedures. His personal illustrations and documentations have added power to his ideas. The inspiration and dedication to these new principles is peppered with humorous subtitles and phrases. While proposing an ideal model, the book also gives practical illustrations and specific guidelines to effect change. It takes us from self-defeating practices to a winning archetype. A great inspiration!

In 'Conscious Capitalism' David Schwerin goes beyond what we normally consider business ethics. He gives his readers a deep spiritual foundation for values in business, something that we've rarely seen in the twentieth century but that will surely be crucial for the twenty-first century.

Author David Schwerin is that rare combination of successful businessman and esoteric scholar. And this combination makes for a fascinating book, both instructive and insightful, and with compelling examples and stories.

If any reader wants to know what spiritual and ethical business will look like in the future, this is the book to read. We can't recommend it highly enough!
