This book is a terrific resource for anyone thinking of making a living by harnessing his or her talent. So often creative professionals learn the hard way that talent is not enough to make a business successful. Blumenthal clearly flags the pitfals, but, more importantly, offers some smart and clear advice about how to charge for your services, oirganize and promote your business, and continue to grow it. What's more, he manages to phrase it all in an engaging style that caters to the short attention span of many creative types. Amazon needs to carry this book and soon!

This is a must read book for anybody starting a business or even thinking about starting a business! Joan Hartley delivers what she promises. Her book is a basic toolkit that will help every business owner.

We all know that every business is only as strong as its weakest link. This book can help you prevent disaster and ensure success by helping you take a very clear and concise look at the essential activities in starting or developing a business.

This book is written in simple language, yet the content is not simplified, as one would expect from a book with this ambitious a title. The author has successfully create a book that is basic, practical and precise.

I will give this book to every friend I know who is starting a new business activity!

This book can decrease your business frustration BIG TIME!

One strength of this book is how it helps you evaluate whether "doing" your own business is right for you. If it ISN'T for you, you have saved yourself way more than the price of the book by knowing not to start!

If "doing" your own business IS for you, this book provides a systematic path to identifying your core values in a way that will enable you to integrate them into a mission statement and business plan.

I saw this book while at a book signing by the author and was impressed with how "down to earth" her advice was to people chatting with her. I really like the way she approaches both task management and time management. She helps the reader define tasks clearly, in increments small enough to easily track progress without getting mired down by any single task.

Her approach definitely encourages a potential business builder to stay on track and motivated, and her anecdotal inclusions illustrate material in a way that helps it "stick"!

In retrospect, I see that this book covers a lot of ground in addressing the many areas in which the reader needs clear direction to develop and build a business. BUT it does not DWELL on details that could get in the way of the basics. (Maybe the author could write a sequel for those who use this book as a stepping stone to success!)

Anyway, I especially liked that there is a lot of basic information but in the context of integrating values, vision, and vitality (Ooh!--maybe I should be a writer!) I recommend it to ANYONE thinking about starting business. It can definitely decrease your frustration while increasing your enjoyment of business life!

A Calculus book that made me fall for Calculus

I have always wanted to gain a degree of mastery over the subject of Calculus, knowing the power and elegance of this topic of mathematics. I had searched in vain for a text that made the subject matter comprehensible, fearing no such beast existed. I stumbled onto this book virtually by accident and to my great surprise and delight, I found the text easy to read, with the subject material presented in a sequential manner that aided complete understanding. At no stage of the text did I suffer the pangs of not knowing where some pertinent information had arisen. Further, many of the examples in the book had a practical application of Calculus to the real world, making the subject even more rewarding to learn. In short, this Calculus Book has made the Calculus a pleasure to learn. My enduring and hearthelt thanks to MR. HOFFMANN and MR BRADLEY for their wonderful gift to me

I just finished reading this book to my grandson, and he was totally absorbed in it from start to finish. In fact, he had his grandma finish reading the story when I had to quit, then asked me to read it to him again the next night! And this is from a kid who's very hyper. The lessons to be learned about life in this book are good for every kid, and they're presented in a way that's spellbinding to them, but not oversimplified. I highly recommend this book!

My name is Tessie and I am 9 years old. I read the Candle and the Magic Boat. I like this book very much because it brings me into the book when Candle flew out to OOzooland and when Coozoo took Candle to the Magic Mirror Factory where Foofooth was. The Mirror Factory was very pretty and it was my favorite place. The story is really exciting and the pictures are almost "magical". I would recommend this book to everyone.

Career Bounce-Back! was an invaluable tool. When I lost my job, I couldn't believe that it could happen to me. One minute I was angry, the next minute depressed. My life was "out of control." I thought it was all my fault, until I read Career Bounce-Back! After reading the book I realized that you could manage through the emotional wave that unemployment brings, and also learned the importance that networking plays in the re-employement process. Career Bounce-Back! helped me get the job.

This book is well-written and was extremely helpful to me. The author, who also has started the PIT oragnization, has provided a resource that otherwise seems to have been missing in the world of job-searching/unemployment. The book goes through the different emotions and practical steps that someone laid off form work must (usually will) go through on the way back to employment. Actual stories of people who where downsized or just plain laid-off, and the description of steps that they took on the road to reemployment (effective networking, collaborative job-searching, and effective interviewing) are inspiring and insightful. In all- a worthwhile read.

Essential Guide for Today's Working Parents
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-18
Career Management and Work-Life Integration provides excellent career information and many great self-assessment activities. The main point of the book is that we all need to take control of our own careers given that no employer these days will do it for us. Beyond making this important point, the book then provides ways for the reader to understand what is happening in the world of work, and how best to manage their career in order to maximize personal and professional success.

As a working father with two young children and a demanding job, I found the book provides an excellent "how to" guide to better understanding and approaching the always difficult issue of striking the right balance. While I did not complete all the exercises in the book, I could see myself returning to it as a resource at different stages of my career/life. Overall, an excellent and highly useful read for any working people, especially working parents.

Useful inside and outside of the classroom

Review Date: 2008-05-28
I used this book as a textbook during graduate school, but found its application reached far outside the classroom. It was a quick and interesting read providing a balance of theory, exercises, and anecdotes. I found the exercises to be exceptionally useful. Performing a self-assessment using various tools helped me identify the values that are most important to me. Additional exercises, such as drafting a 10-year plan, helped me identify which jobs would enable me to reach my career and personal goals.

I would recommend this book to anyone struggling to decide "what they want to do" as well as people looking to achieve a better work-life balance. When I started reading the book, I was unsure what my next career move should be. When I finished, I felt confident in my next move, and now have a career plan based on my goals and desired lifestyle.

Bringing Passion to Change
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-16
By putting the heart into business everyone wins. According to Carmel change is not working in many companies because of the lack of passion. Change Activists make things happen because they care

Carmel creates a compelling case for becoming a Change Activist. This benefits the individual, the business and society as a whole. She learnt her activist skills at the Greenham Common US Air Base in the UK and has successfully these skills into the business world

The free flowing style is refreshing. And her case is backed up by many interviews with the likes of Anita Roddick of Body Shop fame

I've recommended this to my website members and they've told me that it has helped them to - take control of their lives, turn up the volumen on what they really care about, and above all - make things happen.

Definitely different and definitely recommended

Hope for frustrated idealists

Ideal for people who work in or own any size company and fear they have 'sold out' in order to earn a living wage. McConnell demonstrates in humorous yet logical sequences how one can influence a corporate environment or control one's own decisions and settings with cooperative and socially responsible attitudes and more importantly, actions. Her short quizzes cut right to the issues and actual behaviors, leaving one with hope and even an action plan for becoming a "change activist."

Forget Moving The Cheese. This Is Your Life

Review Date: 2001-05-31
About 30 years ago I read Alvin Toffler's FUTURE SHOCK wherein he described the rapidity of change and impact it would have on society and the individual in the coming decades. I have since observed in my personal and professional lives much of that dispossessing "shock" where the future meets the present. I could well have remained immobilized in the wake of recent life path switcheroos but for the wholly manageable techniques laid out in Paul and Sarah Edwards CHANGING DIRECTIONS. Clearly they have done their homework and have fashioned a plan of action that anyone can commence and complete, regardless of how stranded one may feel or uncertain the road may look. The book's life lessons allow individuals to reset the compass, fuel the engine, align the steering, inflate the tires and provide some fresh views of roads taken or not taken. Last year's WHO MOVED MY CHEESE provided a nice little fable and easy read for time-strapped rat-racers. But it might leave many feeling a bit undernourished in the how-to department. Paul and Sarah Edwards have set the table nicely with a six-course feast ("to go") of work and life-changing wisdom. Just desserts await those who faithfully follow their recommended menus.

Well worth the read...

I found the book to be extremely helpful in identifying what it is you wish to change in your life, eliminating the fear and psychological blocks which stand in the way, and manifesting the dreams you've always had...yet often forgot were still locked inside, waiting to be fulfilled. The authors have written in a way which is immediately accessible, entertaining, and easily digested. There is a gentle urging which draws you closer to those "fantasies" many of us let go of, only to replace with a half-life of others' belief systems that ultimately have not led to our fulfillment. "Changing Directions" gets you in touch with what you may have forgotten or forever released as "inappropriate" or "irresponsible choices"...and challenges you to once again embrace them as perhaps the only appropriate, responsible choice you can make if you are ever to achieve happiness.

A must for Users and Providers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-17
Bierma and Waterstraat have very accurately described a proven outsourcing process to reduce both chemical usage and chemical costs. The book is excellent for newcomers looking to use chemical management as a tool to reduce usage and costs but has enough information for those that are using chemical management to improve their programs. At any level the book offers "practical and proven" examples to illustrate implementation and documented the results. The authors have cleverly descibed the total life cycle costs associated with chemical use and why it make both economical and environmental sense to implement chemical management. If you are a user of chemicals or a supplier of chemicals this book challenges you to look outside of traditional buy/sell relationships and move towards outsourced chemical management. This book sets the stage for a rapidly growing industry that is no longer a trend but a very effective management discipline. It's a must for users and providers of chemicals.
