Roland D. Nolen is urging people in Corporate America to adopt a new perspective on success. "Most people work hard, if you think about it," Nolen says, "When it comes down to it, you have to differentiate yourself. The people with interpersonal skills, communication skills, and team player attitudes are the ones getting ahead." He claims that it is imperative for workers to see their weaknesses and strengths through the eyes of others. Communication is also crucial, claims Nolen. Most employees work very hard and produce good results; however, if they can't communicate their progress to others successfully, these people may never enjoy positive recognition. This has become increasingly more important as technical skills have gained value over interpersonal skills. With such intense emphasis on technology, employees rarely appreciate the significance of communication and perspective. Because of Roland D. Nolen, my career is finally going places!

This books is really worth it ! Great Job !

A window on the 20th century (told largely in flashback) but beautiful, beautiful, beautiful; artfulness concealing art. If you like Proust, or if he sounds too forbidding, or if you've never even heard of him, this book is for YOU; you'll wolf it down. If it's really still in print, BUY IT NOW; you'll want to pass it on to your friends... PS I had never heard of Maria Bauer until I stumbled across this book!

Reviewed by Brian Smith for Reader Views (3/06)

I can still hear my father saying to me, "Son, if you want to succeed in this world, just remember one thing. It's not `what' you know but `who' you know that counts." Like most young people, I was naive and certainly idealistic and didn't put much weight into what my father had to say. Little did I realize at the time how right my father was. In an idealistic world, how you look and how you act is not important. You are who you are and everyone should accept you as you are. However, in the real world, how you look and how you act is everything. The reality is that most people make a decision within 20 seconds of meeting you: whether they like you, or not; if they want to get to know you better, or not; and if they want to do business with you, or not. (Is it fair? No. Is it right? No. Is it the real world? You bet!)

Networking - the art of building relationships - should be offered as a full-time course at all business colleges and universities. Author Bette Daoust contends that "networking does not provide you with a get rich quick scheme for acquiring new business. It does, however, provide some guidance as to where best to spend your time." As a part-time college professor and full-time training and performance consultant, I couldn't agree more with the author. Networking is everything. Success in business is about building relationships. Someone you know, knows someone, who knows someone that you'd like to know. (It's kind of like six degrees of separation.)

Daoust's book, "Networking - 150 Ways to Promote Yourself," is a must-read for anyone contemplating starting up their own small business, or is in the business of selling a product or service. You'll find the tips helpful, and the self-paced exercises sprinkled throughout the book, a real bargain. The checklists, like the one that appears on page 17, will help you get focused on what's important to you and assist you in formulating a much-needed action plan. (Fail to plan - plan to fail.)

I like Daoust's writing style. I found the book easy to read. There is something for everyone in it. Even people who have been in business for a number of years will benefit from reading it and checking out the Resource Guide beginning on page 195. You can never have too many contacts or too many ways to let people and organizations know what you can do for them.

You've got to get `in' the game to stay in the game. What you know will keep you there, but `who' you know will get you there. Daoust's book might just be the catalyst for success that you've been looking for.

If you have a product to sell this is the book for you. I have never seen a work that is so packed full of ideas and information to help you get ahead and done in such a clear and concise way.
On each page you will find a great tip to use to promote yourself and our author explains each one and how to use it to your advantage. Here is an example of a few topics:
Under "Event Marketing," Your Pitch; under "What To Join," Cost of Membership; under "Web Relationships," Tips & FAQ, and this is just naming a few that are included in this work.
Want to get ahead? This book will surely help you. Very thought-out and extremely well-done.

As I do with a lot of purchases, I browsed through this book in a bookstore, then ordered it from Amazon. In my brief scan, I could tell it contained some nuggets worth ingesting. This is not a long book- it's a short read, but Mr. Roberts quickly hits every nail on the head. I do wish he had expanded even more on some of the topics, but keeping it short will make it easy to read again and again, for the things he tells you must be learned and practiced and become habits, and that does not not come without repetition. Reinventing yourself (if you have to go that far..and most of us do) takes more than a quick read of the rules and just saying, "Okay, now I'll do that
My editor eye couldn't help but notice a few typos but I was able to dismiss them and focus on the good information.
One word of warning, the author uses the "D" word and the "C" word....discipline and commitment.

possible tool to save a brand from death

The cover attracted me and I bought this book in UK during a trip because the subject sounded great and the praises serious. It is in fact a kind of rich tool box with lots of examples (most of them quite relevant indeed). Lots of books about brand are worthless, so that's the reason I'd like to recommend this one. The chapter "Modifying the brand's identity" could have been more detailed may be. But the rest of the content really helped me to know what to do now (and quickly), especially the brand scorecard which really works. So I guess it could help some other brand managers. But I still find the cover peculiar...

I read an earlier edition of this book years ago. It taught me how to recognize the stumbling blocks that litter my life and to logically develop my own plans to get over, around or through them successfully. I have applied the principles explained in the book many times over the years and they work every time. The book is easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to apply. If you read it and apply it, you will be glad you did. (When I say easy to apply, I mean easy to apply the logical methods taught in the book. Some of the changes that the logic led me to understand that I wanted to make have taken time effort to achieve.)

I've had the opportunity to hear Henry Marsh speak and was very impressed. He is dynamnic, funny and his topics are relevant and important.

His book is just as good, maybe even better. I just loved the personal stories and how much he overcame to accomplish the things that matter to him.

This book has truly helped me be a better person.

There is so much to like about this book-the engaging voice of the author, the tidbits of history woven into the narrative, the unusual (quirky) characters Mr. Higgs worked with and met on his journey (not to mention his bizarre wife). Richard Higgs is a unique and fascinating storyteller--curious, introspective, intelligent, poetic--not to mention his high sense of irony. This book is a pleasure and a treasure.

A book written by an actual entrepreneur about how she started her own business that includes quite a bit of insight and wisdom!

Review Date: 2007-06-06

A wonderful book for women (and men) entrepreneurs who have dreams of being their own boss and want to read about a woman's story of turning her dream into reality. Quite a fun read! Much of what is said in this book is material I cover during my face-to-face sessions as a volunteer SCORE counselor.

If you are lucky enough to get a copy of this book, then you will learn about the importance of the following if you want to be self-employed and your own boss:

1. The need to get organized.
2. The need to get your finances in order.
3. The need to research your business idea and write a business plan.
4. The need to systematize your business' processes.
5. The need to continually improve your business' marketing program.

I particularly enjoyed the discussion of the importance of intellectual property concepts and why one should consider created a tradename, trademarks and possible patents. There was valuable insight offered about the significance of trade secrets. And don't forget how much mentors can help, too.

I also liked the insight provided regarding the use of temp workers exclusively. That seems to be a growing trend in America today. And the message that not having a storefront with a reasonable profit is better than having a strorefront with minimal profit. One should be in business to make money - not just put on a show of being self-employed.

I would have liked the book better if copyrights had also been mentioned. And I was kind of surprised the author said she personally used Quicken instead of QuickBooks. If she really does use Quicken to keep her business' books, then it is smaller than I envisioned it. And I would be surprised she had a need for a tax attorney as she said. 5 stars!

I am completely enthralled by the wonderful world of Political-Economic perspectives on the human body. Just think about how horrible it would be if the right wing masses started opening McDonlalds in 3rd world countries throughout the world. The horror ! ! !

Tom Leatherman is a genius......His psychic abilities are amazing. He is so damn smart, he can actually read poeples minds. His life has been dedicated to these studies, and just think where mankind would be if we could'nt identify the "barrirers" to prenatel care among the poor suffering minorities of South Carolina. What would we do if he had not studied the dietary changes of the Mayan poeple.

I say hooray to this book and hooray to all of the life changing work professor leathermen is working on.

BRAVO ! ! !

This is an attempt by biological anthropologists to bridge what they see as the ever increasing gap between cultural/symbolic/postmodern approaches to anthropology and biological/medical/scientific approaches. This divide is apparently destroying many departments and is moving both of the two approaches away from what makes anthropology distinctive as a field (its comprehensivity). The merging of theories is great for an early (and I hear solitary) attempt at this and the case studies are fascinating and maybe not quite as brilliant as the earlier post would have it. Still, this is a must read for people who are concerned with where anthropology is going.
