I am a history teacher, a Jew, and a woman. This book showed a real respect and understanding of the Jewish women's role in the history of American culture. My grandmother also loves it.

This book is amazing! It was THE book in my history class.

This book was a genuinely original piece of research. I loved it. You can learn about Jews, about consumption, and about America. I was lucky enough to hear Dr. Heinze speak a few years ago on Jewish Women in America, and he (unlike many other writers on the subject) really understands the role of Jewish women - yesterday and today.

James Josiah Webb was a young enterprising man in his twenties who made several trips down the Santa Fe and Chihuahua Trails in the 1840's and this is his account of what life was like then. While not exactly filled with tales of high adventure or edge of your seat drama, it is a good character study of relationships between Americans, Mexicans and Native Americans. The chapters on his 1846 trading venture during war time Mexico are very insightful and gives the reader a feeling for what it must have been like going through those tense and turbulent times of political unrest. A good book.

In January 1888, a few months shy of his 70th birthday, James Josiah Webb sat down in his Connecticut home and began writing his memoirs of his days as a Santa Fe trader, which had consumed 17 years of his life from 1844 to 1861. Unfortunately, a year later, after writing about only the first three years of that experience, Webb died. Although unfinished, this is Webb's manuscript as it lay in his desk the day he died.

After settling in St. Louis from his family's home in Connecticut, Webb became interested in the trade caravans that took goods between Independence, MO, and Santa Fe (and other points in Mexico). In 1844 he made his first trading expedition; although it wasn't a huge success, he returned to St. Louis and, with a partner, planned another trip. This second venture the following year was a big success. But the war with Mexico threw a monkey wrench into things, and on his third trip the partners decided to bring their goods beyond Santa Fe to near Mexico City. They were arrested in Chihuahua, where they remained prisoners for a month, and when finally released, proceeded on to San Juan de los Lagos, where they sold their goods. His account ends with their return to St. Louis.

Webb must have had a phenomenal memory because his narrative is packed with anecdotes and encounters with other traders and trail travelers that seem fresh and complete. He apparently kept all his account books and business records for all his years spent in the trade, but there is no mention of him keeping journals. His style is breezy and informal, and the book hasn't been "doctored" in any way by the editor (except for spelling and grammar corrections). The editor, Ralph Bieber, has done an excellent job (in footnotes) in identifying geographical features mentioned and expanding on various people encountered by Webb. The only criticism I have is the book is lacking an index, which would be useful. It's a fascinating first-hand account of life on the Santa Fe Trail (and Mexico). Webb's manuscript ran some 250 pages yet covered only three years; one can only imagine had he lived longer to complete his memoirs how many volumes they would comprise. If the rest were only half as interesting and informative as this volume, they would still be worth looking into.

This book is well written and a must read for a marketer or advertiser. Its focus is on what you must do to keep your customers AFTER you have them. Goes way beyond tired old books on customer service. I recommend it

My teacher in grad school used this book in our database marketing class and Mr. Vavra hits the nail on the head. If you own a business or work in a company chances are that reading this book will open your eyes - and the deficient marketing practices and priorities that you see will blow you away. This book is written without the stodgy business speak.

Amazing book, very insightful, and great stories as well. Really enjoyed it. Oh... and I learned a few more poker tips along the way. Highly recommend it! :)

This book is an amazing merging of the experience , knowledge and wisdom of three experienced developers that gives the reader concepts, stories, tools and exercises to develop the type of skills any leader of this new millennium should own.
I believe that any Executive should have it and use it in his everyday activities and that the ones who help Executives in companies like HRD, coaches and facilitators should own the whole package for their greater results.
It's a very enjoyable book, a good manual that makes itself be read with interest, fun and ... action. We need more 'Alpha Leaders'!!!

This should become THE management book of 2002

Some talk about the emotional intelligence of leaders, others talk about level 5 leadership. This book focusses on what a leader should do in practice. It is written around a simple model I really like. It consists of 3 basic dimensions: Anticipate-Align-Act and 9 principles that come with these 3 dimensions of leadership. Anticipation requires that one can detect weak signals, has the agility to understand them and that the organization is flexible enough to respond. Align, the second dimension, is about assuring that the core purpose, values and beliefs of the organization are aligned with the actions of their leaders and their people. People's attitudes, values and the company culture need to be compatible with each other and this book lists attention areas and tools to increase this alignment. Finally, the third dimension has to do with acting fast enough, with attention for the 20% that makes the biggest difference and with the willingness to pursue goals with enough determination and patience. Simple as it seems, one wonders why so few leaders in companies apply this model today. I hope this book will be the stepping-stone some people need to become real "alpha leaders".

It's so well written that's irrelevant whether you have ever heard of NLP. When I wrote "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence", I wanted to make my book accessible, helping people to develop a practical EQ, using the findings of behavioral sciences such as NLP. The authors of this book have done the same for the field of management, and I think they've done wonderful job! The result is a practical book that fits amongst the top business books, and I hope that Wiley will be able to put the needed marketing efforts behind it to turn this masterwork into a bestseller.

It's fully applicable by anyone leading an organization, so that doesn't leave many excuses for not being a good leader...

While many would agree that the Cole clan of Fairbanks knows the story of the Interior, nobody can tell it like Dermot Cole. Cole is able to tell a tale about Alaska like no other Cole can. If you want to get a true slice of Interior life, then buy Dermot's books. His twin brother Terrance is not half bad either.

A Time Saving Reference

If you are like me, you frequently do not have the time to search all of the environmental periodicals for useful articles. This latest intallment of an annual series compiles some of the most important magazine articles from the previous year into a single volume. The editor (John Allen) has done an excellent job not only in selecting the articles, but also in ensuring that the selections represent the diverse field of environmental science. Each volume also contains an index that cross-references the topics as well as a list of important web sites that supplement the topics.

As an environmental educator I have found this to be an exceptional reference tool for my classes. I frequently have my students purchase copies rather then send them to the library to copy the articles directly. As many libraries can't afford a complete set of environmental periodicals, this is a time and money saving reference.

I have also found that this book can be an enjoyable read for anyone who has an interest in environmental issues. Most of the articles are short (3-5 pages) and presented to the non science audience.

An Excellent Book to Guide Your Career and Life

This book provide a very solid approach to combining the spiritual aspects of life with your career or personal life. Many of us during our lives start to question the value that we are contributing both in our personal and career life and this book helps to bring these issue together. Father Byron uses the excellent approach of the Pauline Criteria consisting of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faith, gentleness and self control all from the scripture outlined by Saint Paul. By utilizing these basic criteria it helps to refocus everyone on what is important in life and once you have that focus you will achieve a balance to live and enjoy your life for eternity.

I would recommend this book especially to Executives who are struggling with where they are in their own life and where they really want to be, which is to align your life in all aspects with a high authority God to help us operate in our daily lives. In addition, it is an excellent step for others to refocus their entire direction in alignment with all aspects of life.

I have used the Pauline Criteria everyday since I started reading the book for daily reflection and I will used it forever in my view. I have already reread the book three times because I am so impressed by its content with real life and the need for spirituality. I am already more peaceful with who and where I am then I was over three weeks ago when I purchased the book. It helps give a new direction in my life. I do have a religous and spiritual belief but this has made it even more solid in my life.

Congratulations on an excellent book. Father Byron thanks for the lesson on eternal life. Attitude is the key as you have outlined so nicely.

Excellent book to help anyone get the most out of each day

I was surprised that this book was so balanced, being written by a Roman Catholic Priest. It is a broad based, easy to read and very stimulating summary of one sound approach to establishing a spiritual basis for your worklife that will carry you through the trials and tribulations that we all face at some time. There are no miracles claimed here, just hope and a methodology for maintaining it. This common sense approach to daily living focuses on joy and peace, rather than "The Art of War" that has been the most common business philosphy in the past. It shows how each of us can make a difference and bring the workplace a little closer to where we wish it was (secretely in our hearts). A must read for anyone who is a little burnt out or frustrated, as well as anyone just starting out. With William Byron's approach to work, there can be hope and joy even in the most demanding and demeaning jobs!

A great textbook for end users of mathematics

Review Date: 2000-04-27
This book is just very good. It is a top-quality, superbly on target solution for end users of mathematics. I had selected and subsequently used it as a textbook for a freshman calculus course aimed at prospective economics majors at an Ivy League college. My goal was to present a broad scope of the fundamental concepts of applied mathematics relevant to the social sciences, while keeping the exposition at the basic level of mathematical sophistication. Given the objective, one needs a textbook that would replace most proofs with carefully chosen exemplifications, rely on technically undemanding exercises, but enable the teacher to introduce concepts at a lively pace and tie them to interesting applications. This textbook meets all the requirements.

Our course used essentially only the more advanced parts of the book. The selection of topics was systematized by the idea of staying focused on some of the basic mathematical methods designed for solving broadly understood problems of optimization, extrapolation, and prediction. Formally, students were required to learn algorithmic skills, like finding extrema of functions of one and several variables, linear programming, basic routines for ordinary differential equations and Markov chains. Primary emphasis was put on understanding the differences and similarities between continuous and discrete, deterministic and random. The book served us well and we felt truly rewarded by its amazing collection of well selected, well thought-through real-life applications. I am enthusiastic about this book and so were very many of my students.

This is not a book for a beginner, but is an excellent book for two groups of readers: those who have some background with R and wish to learn about its capabilities for spatial statistics; and those with some background in spatial statistics who wish to learn how to use R. The authors, and especially Roger Bivand, have been the main developers of the spatial statistics packages on R, and therefore know the packages intimately. But the authors also have a deep knowledge of the spatial statistics literature, and I found myself learning something new about these methods in every chapter. Everyone serious about spatial statistics should see what R has to offer. This book is the easiest way to do that.

The best practial introduction to R spatial

The R spatial packages are the leading edge for spatial analysis and spatial statistics. This book, by the primary developers of the R Spatial packages, is the best introduction to the subject that I have seen.

Now, if you are comfortable with it, you can dive an and download R and R spatial and go to down. But if you need some help, this is a good place to start. This would also make a good textbook for a class on spatial analysis.
