I bought this book for the CD. Most of the Elektra catalog is out of print and was never re-released on CD. The CD is great, though I would have liked more international folk music. There's only one foreign language song on the disc. The book itself turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. While I am only about one fifth of the way through it, I'm finding the story of Elektra Records fascinating. I didn't realize (or, more likely had forgotten - you know what they say about the 60s) how many big names in rock got their start there. A great read about the little record company that could.

One of the best books on the music industry I have ever read. When you read a book about a band or artist, or about an era in music or whatever, what you mostly want is to feel like you were there at the time these people were recording and gigging and just being bands. Follow the Music gives you a first-class seat in Elektra's offices, at its artists' concerts, in rehearsal spaces, in restaurants where biz wheeling and dealing is done . . . You come away knowing Jac Holzman underpaid his staffers and artists, but that he genuinely cared about the quality of music his label put out, and about artists' integrity. I wish there had been as much on Arthur Lee and Love as there is on the Doors, but then the Doors were Elektra's biggest-selling act, so I guess it makes sense that they get the most ink in the book. I also didn't like the way the sections on the MC5 and the Stooges - two of the most important bands in the history of rock - are so short, while the one on Carly Simon is so long. But that's because I like the MC5, love the Stooges and wish Carly Simon would go away. But these are quibbles. I loved the book. How much did I love the book? I don't even like the Doors, save for 5 or 6 of their songs, yet I drank in every word about them, and went back and listened to their debut and L.A. Woman because the chapters on those two albums were so moving.

Simply the best

I have read my share of music industry books and this is by far the best one. And what is inspiring is that you do can make good business in this industry and still keep your integrity, just follow Jac Holzmann's example describe in this book. Awesome read!

This is a must read for music fans! There is something for nearly everyone here: The story of the founding and growth of Elektra Records (how an energetic young man, Jac Holzman, with a few hundred dollars, good musical taste and a ton of ideas could actually start a thriving record company). The history of many early folk music performers such as Theodore Bikel, Judy Collins, Jean Richie and many others. The story of the creation of Nonesuch Records (a low-cost Classical division). The history of many Rock performers (including Jim Morrison of the Doors). There is even enough technical info about early recording, studio design and Dolby units to satisfy a tech geek (such as myself)! The image conjured up of a young Holzman setting out with a Magnacord P-6 recorder strapped to his Vespa scooter, to record folk music performances in NYC really conveys the "shoestring" attributes of Elektra Records in the early days. At the other end of the scale, the design of studio "B" was perhaps representative of the "excesses " of the rock era.

The copy of this book that I got from Amazon included a "bonus" CD that contains many tracks of early Ekektra performers that have not been re-released on CD. To me, this CD was worth the price & the book was essentially "free"!

It is sad that only a few recordings from the early Elektra "folk period" have been re-issued on CD. This situation is starting to improve, (see my other reviews for some early Elektra folk "gems" that I have found on CD).

If you spend time in traffic, this is a must have. Classic 5 to 10 minute segments will get you thinking about improving almost anything you are doing... work, raising kids, relationships, fixing up your house. Perfect for the curious mind or one stuck in a rut. Even my 11 year-old thinks it is interesting to listen to!

I got the item for my husband for his birthday. Amazon created a duplicate order and cost us almost $120 in over draft fees because of THEIR duplicate order error. They will NOT address the fees at all. It took almost a month and a lot of fighting to even get back the purchase price of their duplicate order!

Thanks and happy birthday...

Nightingale recorded Lead the Field back in the 1980s. As such, when you listen to it you will first hear that the audio quality is quite awful. But do your best to listen his words, because they are extremely motivating. Nightingale gets you thinking about your goals and your attitudes.

A lot of what he tries to convey to the listening is self-empowerment. You may try to make up excuses as to why you are not successful, such as your family's background. Nightingale will inspire you to create goals and to remind yourself that your attitude determines a lot. These sound like simple concepts, and they are, but most people don't spend anytime thinking of them, or they think about them a lot but not in the right way. They see a goal as being unachievable and give up. Nightingale explores these topics and gives us memorable facts and fables.

Teachers should hand out Lead the Field to every high school senior, it is that good.

I highly recommend this audiobook. I'm sure that I will return to it when I need a good kick to get me back on track with my goals.

Simply delighted with both. He has an engaging, captivating way of sharing his inspiring words. I would recommend it to anyone.

When I first opened this book I thought someone had been snooping on me. Robin Roffer's ideas about core values and authentic promotion of "you" are beautifully aligned with what many personal branding and professional coaches preach. And I am no exception. Yet, she did it in a way that was pure fun to experience! Her exercises are easy to follow and easy to implement. I have shared this book with many clients and would recommend it to anyone - woman OR man who wants a position in life that is noticed and that comes from real goals and real vision.

I bought this book a while ago, but still refer to it and the plan that I mapped out. It has you really look into the brands that you relate to that currently exist to see what the values are of that brand. Practical tips on everything from thinking about your real values or skills to presenting yourself professionally as a woman.

Tips are practical and can be used immediately and really help with mapping out a performance plan and development milestones without the preachy tone of the goal setting, quiz, and other leadership and development books that have you focus on one thing at a time. For a queen of multi-tasking, this was the way to go.

I admit, this is the first personal branding book I got (the only one in the bookstore), but it's a great way to start learning about the philosophy.

I don't think men should be put off by what's written on the cover, since Roffer's methods are pretty much applicable to anyone. Her writing is very learned, practical and authoritative, but her style is friendly and not unnecessarily enthusiastic.

Right now, thinking about it, "Make A Name For Yourself" can be more geared towards women if it had a section on "managing expectations and realities." There is still some discrimination towards women when it comes to their careers and the kinds of work they seek. So, if I were a woman, I'd like to get a few tips (or a whole chapter) on how to maximize my personal branding efforts so that employers will see my strengths and potential first, and my gender next.

Apart from that, a wonderful, wonderful book.

This is a fascinating account of Churchill's life up to about 1904, written around 1930. Even if you are not interested in Churchill (hard for me to imaging if you are reading this review) just the perspective into the late Victorian era is worth the price of admission. It was a totally different world.

The place to start.

PS: The film done about it (using the book as the script) is also very good if a bit slow in parts (specially political speeches).

If you want to know about Winston Churchill's early life and just how well he was able to write well then look no further. The prose is rich, his vocabulary is extensive and the phrasing is pure Churchill. This is a great introduction into his life and writing ability and many sayings and phrases Churchill is known for are given in this volume. Few, if any, are willing to risk potential embarrassment by stating as one of their life's accomplishments any book that they have read. However, if one is able to add having read this book among those achievements then at least that part of their life will not have been wasted.

Tama shares her vulnerable side and foibles along with her success, making her story accessible to the reader. She did it and so can we! She is especially good at leading the reader to trust in themselves. I followed her recommendation of savoring each chapter, rather than reading it all in one sitting. If you are thinking of leaving your career to be an artist or writer, this book is helpful. I plan to read it again. Better yet, sign up to hear her speak!

I enjoyed Tama's writing style and honesty. This story is inspirational to people who are stopped by 'shoulds' and judgment in their lives. She shows us how to trust our inner voice during times of change, how to remain constant and sacrifice the superfluous for what matters most. She is an example of making a difference in this world by having the courage to follow her true path.

Tama Kieves was a successful Harvard grad/lawyer who walked away from her office with a view and high paying job to do what she most wanted to do. When she made her choice to jump in with both feet, she lowered her expenses and took a waitress job to sustain herself while she followed her dream.

She believes that people can and should be able to make a living doing whatever they are naturally gifted at and love to do. She wrote this book and when it didn't get picked up by a publisher, she self published it and then a major company approached her and bought it.

I have read a lot of self help and "Do what you love.." type books and I have to say that this one is awesome. I couldn't put it down. There is so much good advice on just about every page, and the thing is, it's all stuff she knows because she's experienced it.

I wish I had known that the secret to life is doing what you love to do when I first started working. But then, how would we know what we love if we didn't do all those things that we didn't/don't love in the first place?

This is a great book that I highly recommend and would give as gifts.

What's important about work? What's important about life? What would you tell your kids if you wrote them a letter about what's important, what work and life mean to you?

Bill Jensen is a self-described simpleton dedicated to fighting corporate stupidity. Living a simple life in this complicated world is challenge enough, but this brave soul has committed to an even deeper mission. Cutting through the stupidity, bureaucracy, and politics, you'll discover that corporations are comprised of people. People. Ordinary, heart's-in-the-right-place people. These people have feelings, experiences, perspectives, and stories to tell. They have vital messages to pass on to others.

Jensen has collected those messages. Thousands of them, in the form of letters. Written documentaries from the depths of consciousness of the writers. Some are short, some long. Some deep and profound, others relatively shallow. Each has a message. This book is a collection of samples of the letters Jensen has collected. They are assembled on these pages, not to be read necessarily from cover to cover, but to be selected and absorbed at will. Picking and choosing letters, as the author suggests, is not easy-you'll probably read most of them anyway.

The letters are organized into chapters representing what Jensen calls his Five Discoveries: Finding Yourself, Finding the Lessons to be Learned and the Questions to be Asked, Finding the Choices that Really Matter, Finding the Courage to Choose, and Finding Joy, Serenity, and Fulfillment.

The book concludes with a valuable chapter on getting started with your own understandings and choices. This publication is a learning, a sharing, an inspiration to look more carefully at your own life to see what really matters. Curl up with this book next week-end.

What Is Your Life's Work? by Bill Jensen is more than just advice: it gathers life stories and case histories of those who succeeded in identifying what really matters, using the letters and work diaries of others to mirror reader struggles. While the overall message lies in identifying life purpose, all the advice in What Is Your Life's Work can be directed to business solutions and issues as well as more general life concerns over risk, worth, and achievement. An excellent, cathartic inspiration for change.

Personal Reflection, Universal Wisdom

How often do we define ourselves by our work? How often do we equate who we are in life with our job title: assistant director, associate vice deputy, CEO, chairman, stay-at-home mom, etc.? So many people focus so tightly upon their job description as their identity that they ultimately lose sight of their true self.

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK examines what truly matters from a distinctly human perspective. It does so not by dry, formal statements of principles (e.g., the 7-steps, the 10-tenets, the 9-objectives, the 431 value-added theorems . . . you get the picture). Rather, the author offers the wisdom of numerous individuals, precious metals refined in the furnace of everyday existence. The letters and journal entries, selected by Bill Jensen from countless thousands, answer the questions of what really matters in life and how one awakens (or reawakens) the passion in one's soul. The lessons are personal, poignant, and powerful; they are also as unique as are the individual personalities.

In lives of depth and meaning, certain themes emerge: self-respect, integrity, balance, the importance of family, faith, passion, selflessness, and compassion (to name just a few). Mr. Jensen's selections, for the most part, emphasize the transcendence of the individual toward a greater purpose than the accumulation of possessions, or the aggregate of mere activities and accomplishments.

There are two individuals, whose legacies to their children are sadly that of egotistical arrogance and strident selfishness. The reader will quickly recognize these shallow individuals - their stories too are most valuable.

Although a scant 200+ pages, WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK packs a tremendous wallop, a wonderful wake-up call to those who have languished in a low-level comfort zone, or to those who aspire to a higher place. It is a wonderful series of discoveries to those seeking a life of fulfillment and meaning in those areas that truly matter.

The Spanish have the great idea of "work to live," many American s though have the "live to work" mentality, finding themselves not doing what they want to do, or being who they want to be. If you truly want to be something or do something, then this is a book that will help you overcome your own self-doubts, and your own worries knowing that if you are happy and doing the things you should be doing, then everything else follows along nicely. Nevertheless, if you want to learn what people have been saying about people being successful, in that if you listen to your own inner voice because you know you best, then you want to read this book.

Business schools teach that the top 10% of people carry the organization providing over 50% of the total revenue of the company. What is common about these people is that they all are doing something that they believe in, want to do and in many cases love to do. This is the key to the book, clear out your mind of all the things that don't make sense, and start being your own person, your own boss, and start doing the things you want to do, the things you love to do, and if you are very good at it, then you will do just fine in the longer run.

Five of Five stars for this book, was very good to read, and should be part of anyone's own personal business discovery.

Thank you Mr. Cox, you are a Master Teacher and you have another winner here in this very compelling book.

Allan Cox's book, "Your Inner CEO", is a true gem and hidden treasure for any executive. It will soon be recognized as a business classic, carefully prepared and documented by a seasoned expert who knows the ropes and has been there, on the front lines, numerous times. It should be required reading for anyone who aspires to be a CEO, is a CEO or finds themselves thrust into a position of leadership and wants to effect true and constructive change within themselves and in the lives of those in his or her environment or field of influence.

Cox systematically shows the reader how to dive within and do the inner house cleaning and self-evaluation and self-discovery needed for one to be clear, effective, productive, practical and powerful on the surface. Highly recommended, especially for those who understand and believe that the top job and head position is open and available to those that have the courage to look within and gently, effortlessly yet constructively, face their weaknesses.

She isn't Moses and it's not Mt. Sinai, But "Designed for Success" clearly spells out the ten most important commandments for women in the workplace. But although Dondi Scumaci speaks to women, the tone of the book isn't anti-male. It's more about how to overcome the stereotypes women have been raised to accept, and how to become the best woman you can be. Fully female, but also business savvy and successful.

With a new commandment for each chapter, we reconsider mentoring and being a mentor as a powerful tool for women in the corporate world. We learn to "Lead From Your Current Position", probably the most positive of all the commandments. Each chapter explores anecdotal employees facing problems that relate to the commandment being discussed, a nice break from some of the drier subject matter. Questions for Reflection and Action Items also help to summarize each topic and to offer practical applications. The book is light on Scripture and spiritual reference.

Scumaci points out that as girls we're taught not to be pushy or to rock the boat, and we end up not being able to be assertive when necessary. We're taught to avoid making a mistake at all costs, so we play it safe and don't take risks. She argues that what we believe about ourselves is what we communicate to others, so changing how we see ourselves is vital to becoming a leader. She suggests making the mental shift from negotiation (something most woman avoid) to collaboration, and negotiating doesn't seem as daunting. Making the shift from "It's important for everyone to like you" to "It's important to make a difference" is a powerful mental adjustment that frees us to step out and move forward.

These tenets are geared toward employees and managers, not entrepreneurs, and the milieu is consistently an office with a boss/employee dynamic. With so many women running or starting their own small businesses, it would have been a nice angle to cover, although some of the wisdom in this book can certainly apply, like the idea of falling in love with your job again and ways to add value to what you do. Strategies for communicating more effectively certainly carry over. Effective tips include responding to negative comments or disagreeable suggestions with the simple statement "You may be right", thus disarming a potential conflict. Not thinking like a victim or carrying a chip on our shoulders will go a long way to leveling the playing field.

Is there really a glass ceiling? Most definitely, Scumaci believes. She argues, "When men are direct and straightforward at work, they are called leaders. When women are direct and straightforward at work, other words are used to describe them." Facing this reality head on helps us to debunk the stereotypes while still embracing our feminine strengths. It's not necessary to be angry or militant about breaking that barrier, but acknowledging its existence is vital to moving beyond it.

Possibly the biggest revelation in the book will be helpful to women in all walks of life, whether in business or not--that through our own self talk we're often much meaner to ourselves than we are to anyone else, holding us back from achieving our goals and dreams. What do we say to ourselves when we look in the mirror, or when we make a mistake? Scumaci makes the case that if we women can change the way we see and talk to ourselves, we'll open up the possibility of doing great things, as we've been designed by our Creator to do.

OK, I didn't even know this book existed until my job was eliminated, I was sent home on severance and unemployment checks, and am trying to look for a new job.

Because I am home for now, I had the opportunity to watch John Hagee on TV, and saw the interview with Dondi. From the first moment, I KNEW I was hearing from an anointed, professional, and lovely person. I have been in the corporate world since 1985, starting out as a clerk, and now am at the executive assistant level.

I have applied for many wonderful-sounding opportunities, and have been interviewed, but the doors have not opened yet. I am 60 years old, look more like 45-ish, but I am facing something I have never had to face before: my competition is the age of my daughters and grand daughters!! I could tell I needed to learn something more before God would open that door to my new job.

I have read every review to date, and I totally concur with all of them (except the one negative response). Not only do some professionals (I guess I am referring to men) not take women seriously, but when they have to answer to a highly successful female, they consider her a [...] (pardon me) most of the time. And forget it, the rest of us females are either not taken seriously, or, if we are upwardly mobile, we realize that we have to play tough, really tough sometimes, just to be respected. A vicious cycle.

My hat is off to you, Dondi. Thank you for being so used of God, and for helping us to not only succeed professionally, but to bring glory to our Sweet Lord in the process.

I, too, look forward to hearing more from you.

It's not just our imagination. Women do have unique challenges when it comes to the workplace. Women are often overlooked for promotions. They tend to make less money. Many find themselves delineated to den mother status.

With that said, much of what happens in the workplace is of our own making. We patiently wait for our boss to notice our efforts. We shy from conflict or any sort of negotiations. Then, when we are asked for input, we talk more about our problems than our successes.

Designed for Success looks at both the problems that women often experience in the workplace and the unique qualities that they possess. Given the right outlook, the appropriate skills, and understanding of workplace dynamics women can be a valuable asset to the office.

Mixed feelings about this one

I have some real mixed feelings about this book. On the one hands I really like how Mr. Whyte used such unconventional ways to get his point across (he uses poetry to point out the flaws in the corporate world), but on the other hand, a lot of the points in the book made me scratch my head and go 'huh?!'.
The material is very deep and even where there is supposed to be just a small, simple message, Whyte seems to make it complicated so that the meaning looks to be more profound.

How much of our corporate productivity is impeded by pettiness and posturing in the workplace? Seems a corporate healer like David Whyte is needed to stand for finding and reminding folks of a different bottom line.

Connections Found!

Whyte has a unique capacity to make powerful connections between the inner core that fills us with emotion and caring and the places we do our work, sometimes even at the place where our job is located, though not often. His observation that we leave as much as 55% of our true self "in the car" each day when we go in our office to work is so powerfully true. I dare say there are few among us who cannot relate to that feeling. And yet, it is the 55% of ourselves that the company we work for really wants and needs but rarely gets. Unfortunately because of the patriarchal environments that many organizations (not always corporations or even private sector businesses) create we all too often find no real fulfillment in the workplace. That is sad because I never have read any mission statements that pronounce "We ABSOLUTELY are not going to have fun or like one another around here." That makes me think that the realized, oppressives outcome are not intentional. However, we often find ourselves working in and hating very dysfunctional cultures, even if not by design. Whyte introduces the concept of hope in a effort to replace the all-too-present doubt and hegemony of the workplace. We may not be able to express ourselves freely at work but Whyte allows us some freedom to dream of that possibility during our reading of this book.

David Whyte writes in a truly inspiring way. When I worked at the Monterey Bay Aquarium many of us read this book as we struggled to grow better as an organization. This book was the catalyst to many personal "AH HA!" moments. Not just for me, but for many of my colleagues as well. From there I found myself in love with poetry again too. David's poetry is powerful and meaningful. The heart aroused is your own, and worth coming back to.
