Also available in paperback (097638681X, $15.95), The Search For Unrational Leadership: Using Rational & Irrational Methods To Change Your Life by Charles Fleetham (founder of Project Innovations, a management consulting firm serving business and government) outlines a strategy to create a "New Economy" based on the principles of what Fleetham has termed "Unrational Leadership". This refers to a process that Fleetham developed using both rational and irrational methodologies to solve complex problems and in the process, achieving some truly astonishing results in resolving societal problems without the side affect of unintended negative consequences. Challenging, unorthodox, at times iconoclastic, The Search For Unrational Leadership is nevertheless thoughtful, thought-provoking, stimulating reading that is especially commended to the attention of anyone having a managerial responsibility for problem solving within their businesses, their communities, their social causes and political/cultural concerns.

A familiar theme in alcohol/drug abuse therapy (my former career field)is "Your best thinking brought you here"...referring to the error in thought that made anyone feel that they could continue to use their mistaken, thoughtful arrogance in solving a current problem. Organizations, systems, and a variety of government institutions continue to analyze data, create strategic and operational plans, and develop/deliver programs following the logic, the rational approaches of "old school" management. In studying the "Positive Organizational Scholarship" studies of the University of Michigan's School of Business, and now Charlie Fleetham's "Search for Unrational Leadership", I've found many tools to support the development of my managerial and leadership skills. While friends have commented that reading the fairy tale within this book seems childish and pointless, I would counter with the way the story opens up a part of the brain that we neglect - the unconscious, and how it responds to symbols and images. OK, so maybe a management team isn't going to have a "dream circle" in the board room, but it certainly makes sense to discuss dreams in the context of planning, problem-solving, and creation of new programs or initiatives. If our best thinking brought us here - to high gas prices, global famines, multi-national disease possibilities, inadequate government and non-profit support systems to help victims of crisis, wars - we are obligated to find a new way. And Charlie's "new" way may not be so new after all - Native cultures across the world have incorporated many of the techniques that Charlie is reminding us of. Why wouldn't we want to incorporate our entire brain into our decision-making, planning and organizational management issues? Makes sense to me!

I am a consultant who works with senior executives to help them build enterprises capable of remaining innovative, alive and vital over a very long period of time - rather than devolving into stagnant, bureaucratic institutions. The underpinnings of my consulting practice are derived, in part, from Jungian principles - although they are not necessarily explicitly labeled as such with all clients. The ultimate theoretical basis for my work is a collective of individuating Selves, or a Conscious Community. At any rate, I recently came across a book written by a consultant - Charles Fleetham - whose practice complements mine.

In his book The Search for UnRational Leadership: Using Rational & Irrational Methods to Change Your Life, Charles Fleetham has created a path for practitioners to apply Jungian principles to leadership development and organizational change at a much-needed time in our cultural life. The author throws a harsh (and honest) spotlight on the deep cultural and business problems created by our current culture's over-reliance on cognitive rationality, and offers a much-needed antidote via the royal road to the wisdom of the unconscious. The author has created a practical road map for leaders to use Jung's principles in day-to-day organizational decision-making, as well as in times of collective crisis and future visioning. Fleetham has developed a wide variety of tools derived from Jung's principles, including dream work, ancestor visualization, couplings, mandalas, the hero's journey and the I Ching. He has also presented a wide variety of actual case studies, at both the individual and collective levels, where managers and leaders have overcome their initial resistance to using such "strange" tools, and in so doing have created extraordinary and powerful changes in their workplaces and private lives.

Interspersed throughout the book is a newly-created fairy tale, which is (most of the time) fun. Its noble purpose is to engage the reader's unconscious and stimulate a deeper, experiential understanding of the book's concepts. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

Overall, this book is excellent. It is a pioneering book in that it pushes the boundary of Jungian thinking and practice into organizational life, which heretofore has been regarded in many Jungian circles at least with deep suspicion, and very often as simply heretical to everything Jung stood for. My recommendation? Individuate: Buy it and decide for yourself.

An Outstanding Book! Allows the reader to look at and rely on their "darker" (or irrational) side in the decision making process. It teaches you how to confront and partner with your unconscious. Learn how to listen to "the voice that defies reason" and learn the five signs that your unconscious is confronting you. The reader learns how to look into dreams for signs or answers from the unconscious. This book walks you through the stages of life and shows you how to apply leadership to each one. I especially found the chapter on morals and ethics insightful. Charlie Fleetham uses real life situations to support his theory and surprises the reader with a riveting fairy tale! This book not only applies to your professional life, but your personal life as well. I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to look beyond conventional methods to improve leadership skills.

Powerful! Insightful! Will comfortably and uncomfortably stimulate you out of your comfort zone (or Comfortopia zone)! It integrates dimensions of human emotions and behavior with cultural evolution, expectations and growth. This book is one virtually anyone can relate to in multiple ways and provides hope that we can acknowledge unexplored parts of ourselves (our treasures) to make better decisions in any facet of our lives. Though not an easy process, the potential results for taking some personal or professional risks are incredible and even life changing.

Charlie Fleetham courageously shares his own life experiences and his use of unrational leadership in dealing with difficult issues we all face, but frequently avoid or only partially address (problems that defy reason.) His somewhat unconventional use of combining psychological profiling, fairy tales, business and personal case histories, and original modeling of his new approach, keeps the reader amazingly involved...."where's he taking me next?" While reading, I guarantee you'll frequently smile and say to yourself...."boy, did he hit that one on the head!" or "yeah, I've sure dealt with that before." I found myself often sharing paragraphs with my wife, which then prompted some truly meaningful discussions. She's looking forward to reading it.

I believe Fleetham makes a highly effective case for how we've come to rely almost exclusively on rational thought. Though probably a little scary or `out there' to some, most who have the courage to read and contemplate his thinking will see that the `Colossus of Rationality' really doesn't have any clothes on and needs to be told. As he relates, we don't have to give-up being rational or utilizing the abilities and strengths we've built over time.....we just need to include more of ourself (our treasures that we have to offer and work with) into the equation.

The book is bold....different....relevant.....and valuable to anyone with even a partially open mind. One of my favorite books that had a significant impact on my life was The Celestine Prophecy. I think the reasons it was so powerful were: 1) I could see so much of myself in the story; 2) it touched on some things I had previously thought about, but was afraid to talk about with others; and 3) it kindled a somewhat dormant spirituality in me. The Search for Unrational Leadership has some of these same properties.

This book is a breath of fresh air in today's world of yoga and spirituality. It is unusual to read from a teacher who has not only gained intellectual understanding of a particular system, but has also experienced the reality of its practices.

The first chapter 'Fifteen Verses of Wisdom' went straight over my head, which shows I still lack understanding in this area. The chapter 'Talks on Practice' reveals the mechanics of meditation according to the system of Kashmir Shaivism. I found it clear and insightful. This was balanced by the chapter 'Talks on Discipline' which shows that Lakshmanjoo has the integrity to give clear guidelines to the spiritual aspirant on how one should conduct oneself on the spiritual path.

Finally in his last chapter 'The Secret Knowledge of Kundalini' Swami Lakshmanjoo gives real insight into the mechanics of the mysterious subject of kundalini. To date I have found other material on this subject to be rather nebulous and mere fantasy, based in the vivid imaginations of so called gurus and well read authors. Swami Lakshmanjoo takes this mysterious subject out of the category of fantasy and clearly defines how kundalini functions. His intimate description of the various modes of rising of kundalini, based on his own experience are truly fascinating.

This book is a revelation for the earnest seeker on the spiritual path.

Can hardly believe I wrote this review 6 years ago (it is now 24 Feb 2008).

Having delved deeply into the subject of Kundalini, I still find nothing to match Swami Lakshmanjoo's explanations on this mysterious subject. In my continued research I have found that almost all writings on Kundalini are based on what is known as the "Shat Chakra Nirupana," which elaborates on the six chakras in the subtle body. Everywhere you will find illustrations showing the chakra positions along the vertical axis of the spine and the various petals that emanate from each chakra.

After reading the last chapter in "Self Realization" I wondered why Lakshmanjoo made no reference to these commonly recognized lotus petals that surround the charkas. I found the answer in his earlier book "Kashmir Shaivism, the Secret Supreme", in the form of a small footnote which says: "in Kashmir Shaivism the lotus petals are neither experienced nor recognized."

This explains why Lakshmanjoo only talks about the chakras spinning with great velocity and power as the energy of kundalini rises from one chakra to another. Obvious isn't it, since the word chakra actually means wheel.

In this book Lakshmanjoo also explains the difference between prana kundalini, cit kundalini and para kundalini; subjects unique to Kashmir Shaivism. Based on his own personal experience, Lakshmanjoo elaborates with great clarity, leaving the reader convinced of his total authority on this subject.

For those interested in Kashmir Shaivism in general, and Kundalini in particular, I highly recommend this book, and the earlier one: "Kashmir Shaivism the Secret Supreme" which has two chapters on Kundalini.

This book took me to the heart of Kashmir Shaivism. It covered concepts and included both practice and experience. The authors have also provided transliterated sanskrit verses for those who are interested. This is a good begining for any one intending a study of Kashmir Shaivism.

A user-friendly, must-have manual

The Solution Path offers a concise manual on identifying and resolving problems that arise in the workplace and everyday life. The book offers a unique approach to problem solving by presenting practical methods with an emphasis on positive thinking, teamwork, and creativity.

I find the organization of the book extremely helpful. Each chapter includes real-life cases as well as several easy to use exercises that provide readers the opportunity to work on their problems.

Another unique feature of the book is its emphasis on facilitation and teamwork. The Solution Path showed me how to use facilitation and capitalize on the power of my team at every step of the problem solving process. As a result, my team members not only generate many more ideas but also combine them into solutions that are feasible and easier to implement. Facilitation also enabled us to resolve employee conflicts within the team environment. Some of these conflicts were due to personality traits. By utilizing the personality test and exercises, we have started to value our innate personality differences, which resulted in a higher level of productivity.

In addition, unlike other books written on the subject, the author offers spiritual principles that fuel readers with optimism. Readers are inspired to tap into their higher power, view the world as a place filled with abundance rather than scarcity of resources, and approach all their problems in a positive, action-oriented manner. By applying these principles, it almost feels that there are no problems but only solutions.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to maximize managerial skills. The Solution Path is a must-have reference source that I will utilize again and again in my professional and personal life.

The two most precious advantages of this book are its user-friendliness and its effective utilization of "hands on" resources for creating solutions. Sioukas' book will help you reformulate the way you view, deal with, and resolve problems at your workplace and, as I found, within your own personal life.

Throughout my twenty plus years of experience as a corporate executive, I have been exposed to numerous approaches dealing with problem solving. "The Solution Path," not only offers one of the most easy to read and comprehensible tools I have encountered, it also breaks new ground in helping individuals use their inner strengths in harmony with those of their workplace. This book will help you demystify the often complicated processes of effectively working with teams, of envisioning outcomes and developing ideas, and finally, it will empower you to formulate and deliver a strategically sound solution to your problem. It does so by using solid, graspable concepts, and creative, hands-on tools. This book delivers!

I would recommend Dr. Peale's books to those who are interested in the "New Age" type "Secrets" venues as he knew the secret a long time ago. Ever so often, both my daughter & I, re-read his timeless treasure, "The Power of Positive Thinking"; a book my father's generation read and just as pertinent, today, as ever. Read them, give them as gifts for all ages. They will rejuvenate the mind.

Dr. Peale's words of wisdom are skillfully set out by experience and example, personal and otherwise. Many of the characters identified in the book are still living. Dr. Peale candidly offers healthy, inspirational and spiritual techniques to heal the wounds of everyday living with class and resolve leaving the reader to truly feel that life is not a problem, but rather that life is a solution.

Dr. Peale starts out reminding us that Jesus said He came to give us life and to give it more abundantly! (See John 10:10). From that Scripture he goes on to tell us that "You can do no more than you believe you can." Actions begin with the seed of belief. This book is designed to plant the right seeds of belief within its readers.

Faith enables an individual to get in harmony with God. It is through trusting Him that the supernatural is manifested. He emphasizes this point by encouraging us to continually fill our minds with possibility thoughts. Replace doubt with expectancy.

A familiar theme that he drives home in this book and other works is that what you visualize in your mind is produced in the physical dimension. Consider the statement he makes on faith and results when he says, "Think big, and powerful forces are released." Planning for inspiration is essential to the achiever's lifestyle. "Travel, music, art, stimulating friends, and good books contribute to inspirational living," he reminds us.

Some profound thoughts on God's perfect timing are also included. We're reminded of the need to synchronize our timing with His, and that as Christians He lives in us.

Dr. Peale is a master at communicating truth from the Bible. His teachings on how to apply eternal principles is as effective now as ever. Read this book and apply it and you will attain the satisfaction of a life well lived.

That's what this book does -- lifts you up out of the stress and distraction and futility to give you another view of how things are, or could be. My thanks to the author.

A group of high achieving African American high school seniors received this book as part of the "Achievers" program sponsored by the local chapter of the Links. As an African American in mid-career, I decided to get a copy for myself. It was the most important book I have read in at least five years.

The stories are, as a whole, optimistic but also bracingly honest about the obstacles these remarkable professionals have faced. It will inspire the young to believe that their goals are attainable. It will encourage those in mid-career to see that their progress, though uneven, is sustainable. And it will reassure those looking back at the end of their careers that their life's work has been significant if it has made it possible for even one or two others to achieve behind them. I read about one of these stories a day in the gym and frequently caught myself nodding in recognition at the experiences described.

The last profile in the book is of Deborah C. Wright, President and CEO of Carver Federal Savings Bank. The very last line in her profile, and thus the very last line in the book, is "[M]y prayers each morning are, 'God, just make me open to whatever the lesson is so I can get it and get on to the next one.'" AMEN!

Politicians have trusted advisers and strategists who guide them in their every move. There are, however, many professions that require innovative thinking and decision making, and whose practitioners have to be their own strategists. Of course, people in such occupations could do what most people do, which is to use a trusted colleague as a sounding board for their ideas. However, many times a colleague is not available, and even if one were, there is no guarantee that he or she will have the level of discernment needed for a particular problem. It is possible to circumvent the lack of a guru, a spin doctor or a discerning friend, by verifying our own ideas before implementing them. Loehle's book Thinking Strategically: Power Tools for Personal and Professional Advancement, teaches us how to condition our intellect to think ahead so that we can plan a strategy to attain that which is important to us. Naturally, this includes choosing the best path whilst avoiding pitfalls, side-tracking and even derailment from the path. For that, we must learn how to study the particular, while keeping an eye on the whole, and to keep in perspective several logical and causal connections simultaneously. Then, when we master how to think by ourselves, we must learn how to be our own sounding board, that is, how to check our results against all possible errors that can occur during the thinking process and compare them objectively against a known standard. This aspect of strategic thinking is referred to as reality check. The author distinguishes two types: internal and external. The former is important because many of the patterns we perceive are not real but artefacts of our imagination or, may have resulted from an array of potential errors of thinking such as faulty generalization, bad use of logic, incoherence and bad risk checking. The external reality check is like scientific hypothesis testing or the test drive of a new car, and it requires us to submit our result to an array of tests to discredit it, and finally to peer review. One does not need to be a book worm to fully appreciate this book but being reasonably well-read in scientific and technological matters will help to fully appreciate the examples taken from the great innovators. Thinking Strategically is a cornucopia of rich pickings of allegories, common sense and wisdom tempered by the amusing illustrations of Richard Loehle. I recommend this book for anyone challenged to provide novel ideas or solutions to problems still untackled by routine manuals. pires.obrien@netmatters.co.uk

Good content, bad writing

This book was higly recommended to me by a colleague, and after reading it I realize that the content is indeed very good. But the aridity in the author's writing style sometimes jeopardize the content. The text should be more pleasant to read, with more passion and more fun, but instead, it reads like a scientific thesis, with almost no emotion. The few times the author tries to throw a little humor into the text, it looks like it's out of context. But, again, it is worth reading for the very well structured message about strategic thinking tools and techniques, even if ater a while you become a little bored.

The Timeshare Coach is THE BEST industry book I have read to date--FACT!

The Timeshare Coach by Carl Garwood is win/win and timeshare developers worldwide would be wise to include the book with every "new hire" agent orientation materials; project directors and sales vice presidents would be wise to provide existing management with copies of the easy-to-read book, and managers would be wise to create weekly study groups with their teams. Sales agents would be wise to obtain their own copies (and a few to share!), get some 3 x 5 index cards for the pocket affirmations, and create study/support/master-mind groups. The vacationing public would be wise to read the book and apply the principles in their own lines of work, creating win/win/win experiences for all concerned.

This book is a simplified and practical version, industry specific, of The Science of Getting Rich, Think and Grow Rich, The Secret, You Can Heal Your Life, The Success Principles, From Zero to Zillionaire along with other classic titles such as The Greatest Salesman in the World-- all of which remind us that energy follows thought -- FACT!

The Timeshare Coach e-zine is also must reading for all timeshare professionals-- FACT!

Happy selling and vacationing!

I just finished reading The Timeshare Coach and am extremely impressed. The content is focused on sales techniques that he has honed while in the timeshare industry. I also like the integration of proven sales masters like Napoleon Hill. The book is very well written and does not contain alot of fluff. This should be a must-read for all experienced as well as new sales people in the vacation ownership business. Plus, you can sign-up for weekly ezine through his website that reinforces the principles covered in the book.

this book is a MUST if you are in the business. It's simple sales strategies that we all take for granted and the author ( carl ) has gone to amazing lengths to simplify the process of how to treat people with respect, how to sell vacation ownership, and how this product actually makes sense for the right person. Anyone in the business who does not read this 2 times per year is a fool.

I LOVE this book. It's full of great tips on just about anything you can imagine, and not all of them are about saving money. Moms will appreciate the food section because it has a ton of great tips on increasing the shelf life of dairy and produce items. I have been watching my money and my grocery bills for awhile, and I've read quite a few books on the subject, and most of these tips were new to me. If you are a more experienced tightwad and find that most money-saving books don't have much to offer you anymore, this book may just be something new.

Wonderful book! Will pay for itself in a week!

A Great book!!! You can't believe how many solutions to your problems in every day life can be solved . I myself had a a reason to use one of Mary's answers to a problem. I had put 2 sets of old panty hose in my car repair kit . When my fan belt broke I was able to make a temporary fix with the pantyhose. I have to say again what a great book!!!

Mary Hunt's collections of tips for uses of household products is fantastic. This book collects all the little tips that we've all heard "somewhere in the past" into a quick and easy to read reference guide. I highly recommend this book. Even my husband is learning a thing or two ;)

I am not going into an extensive review other than to say that I have reread this book each year for the past three years. I am giving copies to my adult children and have recommended it my employees. If you are interested in improving your perspective of life and want reach a higher level of self satisfaction and appreciate, then get a copy of this book, unline key phrases as you read, and then reread it on occasion. The only reason I am giving this book a five star rating is they do offer the chance to rate it higher.

This is one of the best books I've read so far this year. Mr. Morris successfully turns reading what is usually quite a dull subject into an enjoyable experience. I'm very encouraged to read his other books.

At the end of the day one might agree or disagree with some of the ideas presented in the book. However, Mr. should be given all the credit for his abnormal analytical skills and strong ability in combining philosophy, humor and life experience in one book.

I picked it up thinking it was a spin on the voluntary simplicty view of success, but I GOT SO MUCH MORE out of it! It is fantastic! I have had no previous exposure to Philosophy, but this book really has me inspired to look up some of the works written by the people he quotes in it. Tom's idea of "true success" and how to achieve it can be applied to EVERY PART of a person's life--whether it's work, home, family life, community, etc., and still be congruent with a persons values and long-term goals. A REAL WINNER!

i try to read 50 - 100 books a year and when i read something exceptional, i want to make note of it.

I thought True Success was a brilliant book - well organized, well written, fun and substantive.

It is a road map for personal happiness and fulfillment.

Frankly, I was surprised that I had not heard of this book before. I just grabbed it one day off a book shelf. In my view, had this book been well promoted by the publisher, it could have been a big best seller - it has all the right elements.

Buy and read this book as quickly as you can.

Tom Morris has accomplished something remarkable in this book. He has made the thinking of the history's greatest minds much more accessable for the everday person (like me). Instead of surrounding philisophy with elitist airs, he focuses on how important it is to apply the great thinking of the past to our everyday lives.

Morris begins by debunking the popular myth of success. By weaving the thoughts of Socrates and others cleanly into the text he shows quite convincingly that becoming our best selves is the surest path to lasting success. He view is also quite practical - he recognizes that the measure of your life is in what you do, not just what you think. Also, he understands that money is very necessary part of life; it's just not a satisfying goal in and of itself.

Morris' 7Cs framework is a useful guide to pursuing success. As he points out the path to success isn't always easy. The 7Cs framework is a useful map, especially when you have to navigate the rough spots.
