The book arrived in good condition. I was anticipating it to arrive sooner than it did as my daughter needed it for a class but aside from that, the purchase was a great value and served its purpose well for a college class.

What a great little book!

I really enjoyed this book by Andy Hill. Not until he realized his own successes and failures did he fully see all that he learned from coach Wooden. The foundational principles taught by coach Wooden are one's that we can all admire. "Make each day your masterpiece." Buy this book, then give it to a friend.

Excellent advice for anyone in a leadership position

The book begins with a brief summary of Hill's introduction to Wooden and Hill realization that the only reason he's made it this far is because Wooden's teachings so ingrained in his mind from his time at UCLA and that they are applicable to all aspects of life. He relates Wooden's 21 "secrets" to his business life, and demonstrates how they guided him to the top. It's amazing how perfectly these teachings fit into regular life. John Wooden is truly an enlightened soul.

In fact, I have implemented a few of his lessons into my life already, and it has made quite a difference. In a band I have gotten together, I have gone for talent, in keeping with rule #1 "The team with the best players always wins". I have gotten the best singer, the best metal guitarist and the most unique drummer. It's incredible that Wooden's teachings even apply to a heavy metal band, something at the opposite end of his spectrum. Whenever I am selected to be in a leadership position I skim this book to better prepare myself to succeed. The way these "secrets" apply to every aspect of life where success is an issue is awe inspiring.

A renowned writer and speaker, Zig Ziglar is known for his passionate and empowering presentations - even if you're not a self-help junkie, do yourself a favor and pick up one of his audio books for the experience. 'Over the Top' is all about goal setting, performance, and motivation. As with any self-help book, there is plenty of repetition, and a few insightful examples. Personally, it helped me identify several new areas for improvement, as well as, reminded me of several habits which I have forgotten. The only word of warning: there is a heavy dose of messaging on spirituality and religion. If you're new to the self-help section, I would recommend starting with Jack Canfield's 'The Success Principles'.

Thank you Zig Ziglar

I have read Zig's books, attended his seminars and listened to his audio tapes.....I think I like this book the best of them all. His ideas are timeless and I love his positive mental attitude. Also, he is a funny guy and that comes through in the book. He is a model of success and his strategies in this book, if followed, will make you successful. Finally, this book is easy and quick to read....

I am a christian and have read the post about the person trying to make void what Zig teaches because he is a Christian. It is probably a good guess that the post was from someone that does not know God. I love Zig, his books are awesome and his insights; I am sure come from the Holy Bible and God. The truth always comes from God. I love all of the posts for this review. I even like the one from the anti-christian because in a way it shows that God can work through his willing and obedient people to teach men the best way to live. Some people want all the rewards w/o the sacrifice.

Coaching Into Greatness is written for absolutely everyone and provides very simple steps that will allow you to accomplish your goals personally and/or professionally. The tone of the book is not not preachy or judgmental, just informative. In fact, Kim uses stories from her own life to illustrate many points throughout the book. It's an easy read that has allowed me to accomplish concrete steps towards my goals and allow me to grow in ways I could only have imagined.

Coaching into Greatness allows you to learn/recognize things about yourself that you might not have seen before. With the help of the book, you become aware of what's keeping you from living up to your highest potential, and most importantly: how to overcome it. This book is different from most "self help" books. Its viewpoint is that you already possess the needed skills and you must starting doing what you can do NOW to live into greatness. It was a life changing book for me, and one that I HIGHLY recommend.

The first half of this book was hugely valuable to me and I've found that sharing some of what I gained with folks that work with me has been extremely helpful to them as well. My disappointment came toward the latter half of the book as I found myself overwhelemd and tired of the "languaging" - can't explain that well other than it just seemed like term after term was used and they all started to blend together.

As I said, glad I read it but it was the first half I gained the most from.

I found this book very informative, and down to earth. Often books of this type are dry and didactic. I like the way the writer blends her own experiences and those of her clients into the writiing.

This book is more like reading a letter from a good friend than a "How-to" text.

I'm a business coach myself. I learned a lot about how to coach and about myself as well!

Egonomics

egonomics is the kind of excellent, well-researched book that only comes along every few years. The content plays a vital role in our journey from good to great as part of a major service organization in a large, global company. Specifically, the principles, processes, and tools that apply humility, curiosity and veracity to our business issues, have allowed us to have candid and productive dialogue that were difficult, if not impossible, to have before we read this book and applied it.

egonomics goes beyond self-assessment and self-awareness. This book provides grounded, practical, insightful answers that drive behavior and performance improvement. Applying the principles and practices in egonomics has allowed us as a team to work through significant organizational changes by engaging in focused, candid discussions and subsequently acting on key issues tied directly to business results. Their material has had a direct and positive impact on our performance that I don't think we could have achieved in any other way.

Right to the heart of the issue!

'Egonomics' is a superb account of the effects of excessive and inadequate ego on business performance. Thankfully, the authors took a practical and applied approach to their work instead of the more typical complex, theoretical approach so often seen in other bodies of work. There is ample evidence for anyone who pays attention to human interaction, particularly in the business environment, of these qualities of humility, curiosity, and veracity either contributing to or detracting from productivity at every level of the organization. If `Level 5' leaders possess these qualities as well, that's about all I need to know to be sure we're on the right track, aside from good common sense. Few authors have laid it on the line and it's long overdue. Marcum and Smith have done the business world a huge favor.

Fresh approach to an age-old business problem

Review Date: 2008-01-07
This book is a huge advance over their prior tome and worthy of national attention. Almost every page sparked some thought for me which is more than I can say for most of the more than 300 volumes in my personal library on business and leadership.

I really liked their idea of duality. This insight excited me and made me say to myself, "I've never thought of that." When the "freshness" of an idea like duality can get me motivated to implement that concept NOW, the book has struck pay-dirt with me.

I likewise really liked humility as being the equilibrium and not the direct antithesis of ego and the concept of "unconditional positive regard (UPR)."

I could really put to use Smith and Marcum's list of practical non-defensive humility openers:

"You might be right...," "I haven't really considered that...," "Even though that's hard to hear, I appreciate your bringing it up...," "Even though I'm not happy about what you're saying, I'm glad I'm hearing it now rather than later. What are some...," "Would you mind saying more about that?"

I wish we all could impliment the concepts of this book--maybe some world politicians will also get their hands on a copy !

If you are looking for a book that uses current lingo that is so easy to understand then this is the book for you. Like me you have probably read the prosperity Masters and yes, the lessons are timeless, however to read modern day examples are priceless! I felt as if I knew Ms. Gaines personally. Her stories were hilarious, thought provoking and a blessing to my life. I dare you to try the first law which is tithing and watch something miraculous happen in your life! We all have read or heard about tithing but Ms. Gaines breaks it down like its never been broken down before. I was so moved I tithed to her for writing this classic! Don't pass this book up! Every seeker needs this one in their prosperity library!

I heard it many times before - tithing will demonstrate to the universe that you trust that there will always be more.... yet I never did it. That is until I read this book. What made it easy for me where 2 things, one Edwene didn't tell you where to tithe to, other then wherever you are spiritually fed.... well that makes it easy. The second point was - try it out for 6 months - if it didn't work for you you can stop.... well I was hooked after 2 weeks. Now I receive money and I am excited about sharing it with whoever inspired me ~ fed me spiritual food... my children, my church, Edwene, a speaker, a song writer, etc. This book has touched me deeply.

I absolutely LOVED this book! I've been reading several books about attracting prosperity, but they were all lacking one thing. That one thing is how God is involved. This book finally connected the two for me. I now see how you can attract prosperity and still honor God. What I appreciated the most what the difference between "go" signs and "stop" signs. Sometimes I get confused on what God is trying to tell me. I recommend this to all those spiritual people that are still trying to find guidance.

Coaching for success

Review Date: 2002-04-22
Success 2000 is a basic tool in my coaching toolbox. It is the starting point for all of my clients, whether they are seeking a change of employment, feeling unsure of their future, or looking for fulfillment in life. I have suggested for family, friends and those inquiring about coaching to read this book as a way of beginning to examine what is important in their lives. Are most people innately able to look at themselves and figure out what to do next? I know I was not able to do so, despite having advanced professional training in an allied medical field. I did not know where to start to make the changes I felt somehow were necessary for me to find fulfillment. Vicki Spina presents a user friendly format to assist the reader in self-assessment, and to start the process of reflection which precedes change. I appreciate the straight-forward philosophy and techniques which gently move the reader forward on the search for meaning. This is a book worth reading and rereading. It is a great resource for learning to move from A to Z in finding what one wants in life.

I probably have seven or eight coaching books on my shelf. Coach Anyone About Anything has been the most helpful book I've read for establishing a coaching business. I have a part time coaching business and have been trained by a nationally recognized and respected Christian coach training organization. This book has given me fresh insights that make so much sense, but that I have not come across in either my training or my other reading. I am restructuring my coaching business from the foundation of re thinking and re writing my coaching philosophy to re defining the niche market that I really enjoy working with. Because of this book, now, when someone asks me what life coaching is about or what I do I will be ready with a concise, well thought out and powerful response. Ned and Germaine are great. I consider this a "must read" for business and life coaches.

I have read lots of books and articles about coaching, but no one like this.
The way the content is presented forces you to learn, to keep reading and feel confident.
After every chapter you can read an inspirational thought.
The way the book has been constructed, to use a visible expression, shows author's interest of teaching in a simple fashion way. The graphs are very good and the content very well organized.
Every coach should have this book.

When my boyfriend first handed me this book I was unentuhused, "Yet another book about coaching??" As a Peak Performance Expert, Master NLP practitioner and a Master Life Coach for The Certified Coaches Federation, I've read tons and tons of books on empowering others to succeed. As such, when I first cracked open this book I did so with little expectation of learning anything "new". I must must confess, however, that I was dead wrong...and dutifiully humbled. This book was filled with wonderful gems of insight and many innovative exercises and ideas. It will be a resource that I will return to again and again to use with my clients. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing this book.

Coaches, Leaders, Parents, Teens, Educators, Employers, Employees, Anyone with a Pulse:

If you genuinely care about your success or the success of another...If you or someone you love desires better...You can save yourself the frustration of trying to figure out which book will deliver results.

Chapter Six is my favorite. By itself, it stands above the crowd and shows the way to achievement by teaching how-to:

+ Improve Knowledge
+ Sharpen Skills
+ Build Confidence
+ Motivate - Others & Yourself
+ Discover why most people don't take the action they need to succeed.
+ Who wouldn't want to know this?

Though the utility of some of the charts are not immediately obvious, they quickly become useful tools because the authors present solid substance and real-world examples over fluff and fiction.

This book is easy to read and the proven methods are easy to implement.

For yourself or someone you love, I highly recommend is as an opportunity to grow into the life you desire. You can make a difference. Will you?

If you think on starting to coach co-workers, family, friends, team, thumb around and look for another book. The authors start mentioning you can read the book from cover to cover (what I did). I would recommend reading it upside down.

Writing is not clear enough, and, unless you are an experienced and enthusiastic coach, nothing will make sense for you.

On their defense I have to say the version I read was translated into Portuguese and some of the essence may have been lost in the process.

One of the best books I've read that describes the nature of work and the human condition. Whyte captures so beautifully the emotions I feel as an independent consultant who spent time inside some large organizations. These days I feel that need to be "part of something", and just as strongly feel the need to use my own voice and find my own way should I go back inside an organization. Whyte describes this tension of wanting to be a part and wanting to express who you are inside an organzation brilliantly. I can't imagine anyone who hasn't struggled with these fundamental questions. It was affirming to know that my conflicts with those desires are not unusual.

Finding Fulfilling Work Means Embracing the Uncertainty of One's Journey
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-06
Each of us will likely reach a point in our professional lives when we ask ourselves what is the value of what we're doing. Some may ignore the impulse and go on with their routines with little adverse effect, while others may feel they are on the edge of a precipice with no path marked toward fulfillment. Author David Whyte, who is both a professional poet and a Fortune 500 consultant, certainly has the experience to write a book about self-discovery, and his most pervasive theme is one of pilgrimage toward our real selves. What makes Whyte's book essential reading is how he is able to translate this journey to our working lives. For many, work is a means to ward off fears of poverty, but the author illustrates how work at its best can be joyful, a "hidden trove of imaginative treasure that we hope can give us self-respect, independence and the ease we desire". At the same time, the harsh reality is that most companies deprive us of time and spaciousness and cause us to lose our creative spark, even ourselves.

Using his life as a guiding post for the reader, the author reveals many of the questions, crises, and turning points in his own search for meaningful work suited to his nature. He candidly discusses the life-changing encounters in his life, as well as the family memories and formative experiences that shaped his own psyche. More specifically, Whyte discusses his stint as a naturalist in the Galapagos Islands and the key role his ancestors have played in shaping the structure and form of his creative work. This emphasis he places upon our inheritance from those who have gone before us is probably the most inspiring message he conveys here. He cites his inspirations from William Blake's paintings, Rainer Maria Rilke's poems, and from the way poet John Keats lived his brief life. Keats believed that truly great people have the ability to accept that not everything can be resolved, that they can thrive in uncertainty. Such dependence on what Keats called the "holiness of the heart's affections" is what Whyte feels needs to be valued now.

Keats' concept of negative capability is the crux of Whyte's thesis, that one should follow one's calling and be guided by one's desires and aptitudes in spite of the uncertainty. Choosing or working at a job or career one is not suited to by nature is a mistake many make due to blinding factors like keeping up with the bills or placing emphasis on what others think. Whyte shows why and how to get back in touch with one's nature and get back on track and why it is so important for people to do so. This is not a stepwise manual toward self-fulfillment. Rather, it's a book of the author's own decisive path, and as such, certain sections of the book will be more relevant than others. Fortunately, Whyte knows firsthand what the corporate world is like and shows how he got back to writing poetry and what the costs and benefits were of doing so. Now he works in the corporate world, using his poetry self to help those who have left behind their creative, inner selves to regain them. It appears he has found the best of both worlds.

I was "moved" and inspired by this book which was a gift from a respected Executive Coach. This books assists all that want to deepen their connection to their life's work or find out what their life's work is. The author states that far too many people trudge through a mediocre work life - scrambling through day-to-day "busyness" towards exhaustion. Rather he encourages more time for self-reflection and analysis. While many most often want to get away from work - it's where many spend the majority of their time, and it's where many spend much of it wishing they were somewhere else, doing something else. Many overlook how work can actually be our greatest opportunity for discovery and growth - and author explains how. The Chapters include the following:

1) Setting out with firm persuasion
2) A stranger at the door
3) From Powerlessness to participation
4) Ambition, Horizon and Arrival
5) A short Sea Crossing
6) From Exhaustion to Wholeheartedness
7) Arrival and Authenticity
8) When the real you wants out
9) Escaping the Prison of Time and Work
10) A voyage through the hours of the day

A practical, beautiful, insightful and soul-stretching work of art.

I don't often pick up books that threaten to be more touchy-feely than substantive, as the title of this book and its first few pages implied to me. But I read it upon the advice of a friend.

David Whyte has one foot firmly planted in the practical with the other firmly planted in the spiritural and, by the end of the book, you have an idea about how you might achieve a similar posture. One of the reasons Mr. Whyte can pull this off is because he is both a genuine artist--a poet--and has substantial experience in the nuts-and-bolts corporate world. In fact, he has billed himself and sold himself (lucratively, apparently) as a corporate poet.

"Crossing the Unknown Sea" refers to the author's life adventure in search of a career and a meaningful life. I suspect it is because of his roots in poetry that he can write as a novelist--not by virtue of plot or character development, because there is little of that other than the plot of his own life and the development of his own charachter--but because of his ability to use words to capture subtle and deep meanings without sounding as if he were trying to do just that.

I could go on. The book as been a kick-off point for my own life's adventure for which I had already been preparing. However, it is a book well worth reading for its own sake, even if you aren't in the market for a life adventure for yourself.

Wondering how real-life experiences relate to business? Want to learn savvy business strategies that produce a win-win for you and your customers? And have fun (the book cover says it all)?

That's what authors, Tina Forsyth and Andrea J. Lee, share in their hot-off-the-press book, Money, Meaning, and Beyond.

These two ladies deliver out-of-the-box thinking with practical applications. It's one of the few books that truly operates like a manual to be referred to often for inspiration and fine-tuning your business.

P.S. If you like Money, Meaning and Beyond, there are promotions at the back of the book for additional products and services that more than pay for the book itself. Now, how's that for a deal!

Sound Advice That Needs To Be Carefully Implemented

I was at an airport bookstore when this book jumped off the shelf and into my arms. No wonder, I had just been extolling, to a client group of high powered lawyers, that times are changing (radically) and business-as-usual could well be fatal for many of them. Along come the Freiberg's extolling the importance of blowing up doing business-as-usual. And to think that I had missed their previous books even though being such a voracious reader of business books.

The notion that business-as-usual no longer cuts it is certainly not new. Guru's like Tom Peters, and more recently Seth Godin, have been shouting this message for years.

What the Freiberg's do very well is combine this notion with sound self-empowerment advice which is certainly needed in order to have the courage to challenge the status quo that exists in so many entities.

Here is the conundrum for managers who heed their advice. With the dramatic changes going on in the market, never has there been a greater need for radical change in every industry, and in almost every company. BUT, with the downsizing that is going on, never has it been a riskier time to be popping-off to ones boss about the needed change. Very tricky!

For entrepreneurs, or entrepreneurial managers, this is a terrific book. For managers stuck in a dinosaur company, I would think one would want to be very careful about how one implements the strategies outlined in this book. The latter is not a fault of the book as much as it as a function of the fact that the times have changed dramatically since the book's publication last year.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to following the Freiberg's work and writings more closely. Their main message is one that resonates well with my own beliefs about how our country needs couragous business and political leaders who are willing to challenge, and change, the staus quo.

I truly don't understand what the fuss is all about. In terms of background, I am a successful entrepreneur and business owner who has read a hundred of these types of books. I found this book vague, rather remedial and the authors simply regurgitated the same old stuff. It sounds very much like their book "Guts" which was actually a pretty good read. I feel you would be much better off re-reading one of the classics like Think & Grow Rich, an early book by Dale Carnegie or a true new classic like Visionary Life or Visionary Business by Marc Allen. Trust me .... you will thank me.
