A good book with some very practical advise on how to succeed as a manager, but also how to deal with issues in everyday life. I think the managerial aspect of this book means it is more for those who already find themselves in lower management and want to move up the corporate ladder.
I appreciated the insight into life of the Author and the tips, quotes and "remember this" at the end of each chapter are well worth making note of.
Time will tell if it will get me a promotion ;-)

"It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Joel Weiss' inspirational book is geared towards career minded individuals who want to move from where they are today to a place of greater influence and success. The subjects covered in this book reach beyond the business world and can apply to anyone wishing to succeed in life. Some of the topics include:

Having a Positive Attitude
Being a Doer, Not Just a Talker
Putting in Extra Time and Effort
Being Gracious at Winning and Losing
Striving to be Fair
Being Responsible and Reliable

On the very practical side, this book teaches you how to prepare for meetings, map out your career, ask for what you want and communicate in a way that ensures success. Throughout the book there are tips like this called "Remember This:"

"The support and cooperation from the people around you will greatly determine your success. Don't try to go it alone. Use the best talent to brainstorm and help on projects. Delegate and recognize all contributions. Extend your network beyond your normal boundaries." ~ Pg. 41

After reading this book I can say I can think of a lot of people who would benefit greatly from reading this excellent book on living a more successful life. Even one quote from this book could change your life or send you in a new exciting direction. This book will be especially appreciated by anyone who intends to accept a promotion or who is already in management or a position where they have to make decisions for others on a daily basis.

This is the type of book you want to buy for all your friends as gifts because it will further their success and give them more job satisfaction over the years as they reach for their dreams. I especially enjoyed the "recap" at the end of the book, which has affirmations for success and it can also be used to measure your current success so you can make goals for your future.

"You realize you can learn from others and have become much more observant, identifying good role models for yourself." ~ pg. 139, Recap

Wished I Read This Book Earlier In My Business Career

"How To Get From Cublicle To Corner Office" by Joel Weiss is the kind of book I wish I read when I was starting my business career more than 50 years ago. This is a practical fast-read guide to achieving success in the business world. There are no elaborate formulas or extensive theories. Rather,Weiss stresses the importance of basic skills that helped propel him up the corporate ladder. In a chapter titled, "Present the Unshakable Facts." Weiss quotes a memo from the late Harold Geneen, chairman and CEO of ITT, who wrote to him as well as 100,000 other employees under his command about "apparent facts. assumed fact, reported facts and hoped-for facts." Weiss cites his military experiences as an intelligence officer which enabled him to reach good solid decisions through a six-step process. And in a chapter, "Ask For What You Want," he related a story of sitting next to his CEO on a 3 hours plane ride, he presented his case that the company needed a chief adminisistrative officer and that he could do the job. The job was created for him and he became Chief Administrative Officer of the Burger King Corporation. This book is crammed with such examples and strategies on improving your status in a business organization . I particularly recommend it for the new college graduate and those in mid career.

Excellent Book - my secret little bible for job success

This book is the accumulation of common sense from a very accomplished businessman, Joel Weiss.

Essentially, this book is all the important advice they don't teach you in school. I graduated from Yale in 2003 --it was a great school, but they didn't teach me a jot about how to succeed in business. This book has become my little bible for doing the right thing on the job. Some advice is common sense, like 'show up on time.' But other things I never would have known, like 'ask to read their business plan.' (You should have seen my boss's eyes light up when I asked to read the plan...)

My favorite thing about this book is the format. Each chapter is only 5-6 pages long, and covers a specific piece of advice. Joel backs up every piece of advice with a story or two from his own experience, which really gives the book a human element. Each chapter ends with a few famous quotes to back up the main theme. This is a book to read, and re-read for advice. It sits by my bed, and I'll read a chapter or two to psych me up every once in a while.

This isn't some new 'job philosophy'--it is about 30 specific suggestions for doing well, getting promotions, and even creating new job positions within a company. It matters less and less where you went to school--people only really care about job performance.

I have to say that this would make the perfect graduation gift to anyone planning to get a job.

Elva Anson has written an outstanding book here. As a family therapist for over 15 years, Anson has distilled many of the "trade secrets" that therapists teach their clients. If you're a parent, you can pay someone like me $125+ per hour to teach you these skills...or you can read Anson's book.

Ms. Anson focuses on important points like

* How we keep kids dependent
* Support must precede a challenge (VERY important)
* Encouragement is the key to growth

and most important of all....

that home is the classroom for learning life skills.

As a professional counselor, I highly recommend this book.

Do you struggle to get your children to clean their rooms and help with family chores? If both you and your children are frustrated after these battles, read this book and apply the principles described by this author. As a marriage family therapist and former school teacher, Anson offers both concrete education and insightful personal tips to improve communications and relationships between parents and their children.

"Understanding your Teen" was especially useful to me. This is a MUST READ for parents with teens. Everything changes as teens struggle to define their independence. This step is critical for rearing a capable, responsible adult-but how can parents respond in a healthy way?

If you care about your children and the world we leave them, read this book and rear responsible, respectful, loving children.

Anson provides both a philosophical framework and practical suggestions for enlisting your kids as partners and sharing the responsibility for every-day chores, as well as teaching them larger life lessons and living skills. Very easy to read and with helpful ideas for specific kinds of problems such as organization and keeping the bedroom clean. Definitely recommend.

Elva Anson really strikes a chord in building family harmony when all adults and children participate in caring for the home and edify one another. HOW TO GET KIDS TO HELP A HOME is on the top of my gift-giving list to families with preschoolers who will get the full advantage of growing with the program presented for delegating household chores by age and ability. However, even parents of older children can benefit from the strategies presented in this quick read. I totally agree with the author "Home is the classroom for learning basic life skills. If you are a parent, you are a teacher."

When you finish reading this book, your own home will be super organized and set up to run efficiently, family members will be cheerfully interacting with each other, mutual respect and love for each other will color all your days, and helping is never an issue. Anson knows and respects the uniqueness of every child and shows you how to work with that uniqueness to inspire the confidence each child needs to succeed in life. She provides age-related charts of what to expect, concrete directions on how to train and encourage, all the while maintaining the all-important respect for opinions and contributions. For instance, instead of just saying "clean your room," tell them what that means and exactly how to clean, step by step. No open-ended directives but understandable perimeters. Organize closets so things can be put away easily. Be a role model: kids do as you do not as you say. If your room's a mess, their's will be too. This book is chock full of everything you need to know, with easy to follow instructions with minute details that will encourage you to help out at home yourself. Children love to please and your job is to encourage that. Thank you, Elva Anson, for this valuable contribution to our culture. If people complain about how kids are these days, it can only be because they haven't utilized the knowledge presented here.

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting - it is that engaging. The author has been through so many ups and downs in her career journey, yet, you come away knowing she has just become all the stronger. I personally am not the best when it comes to prioritizing and can easily procrastinate and do the things that are comfortable verusus challenging at times. This book inspired me to stop that! It's a great idea to tackle the tough stuff early in the day. I also love her tips on staying grounded and learning to laugh at yourself. Overall, I was really inspired by this guide and highly recommend it to all working women.

The principles, challenges and ideas in this book are very real for anyone who lives on this planet. As someone who for the past ten years has been an eyewitness to the events and actions that gave rise to this book, i can unconditionally attest that the only thing more real than the book, is the author. Happy readings!

Networking can be a lot of fun if done right and Chien Wang's "It's Who Knows You" will show you how to have fun, meet great people, build relationships and grow your business. If you follow the steps he lay's out you will be surrounded with a huge Network of friends who "Know You" and that's the ultimate goal. Chien Wang isn't some professor who decided to write a networking book based on theory. Chien Wang is an Entrepreneur who has built several successful businesses by actually doing it. He has been a member of 20+ various Networking communities and still is a member of many to this day. There isn't an organization that Chien Wang hasn't visited and within the Networking community in Southern California "Chien Wang" has become a household name. The steps he lay's out in his book are based on his own experiences in finding what works and what doesn't. As he fine tuned his Networking skills, he established a Network of several thousand professionals. He was receiving so many party invites, breakfast invites, lunch invites, dinner invites, after dinner invites that before he knew it, he became the undisputed #1 Professional Asian Networker on the West Coast. Next he was being invited as a Speaker at Events and then he wrote the 2nd edition of this book, after which he was asked to speak at even more events. If you are going to throw a party or hold a networking event, Chien Wang was the first person you called because if he was your friend, he could promote your event using his several thousand strong mailing list. And if you follow his steps and learn from his experiences and use what he has learned. You too will have a Network that will propel you to the top of everyone's "Who to Know" list. Before you know it, you will be "The One" everyone wants to meet, you will be "The One" being invited to breakfast, lunch, dinner and all the Parties. Because..."It's Who Knows You"
(Note: I met Chien at a Networking Event in Early 2007 and read his first book "Its Who Knows You" (this is the 2nd Edition). Since then we have crossed paths at many Networking Events and even ended up doing business together (he mentions it in the book). So my views are based on the content of the book as well as having the good fortune of knowing Chien personally and actually seeing him put his advice into action at Networking Events)

Chien Wang is the real deal. As someone who coaches professionals and consultants on how to find clients, I recommend this book on a regular basis. Wang helps people overcome the common excuses and mistakes about networking, like " I don't have time," "I don't have the money," "I don't drink," "I'm too shy," and "I never get any business from networking."

Emanuel Carpenter's book, "A Job Ain't Nothing But Work is a light-hearted and inspired stroke of genuis that takes a look at the convoluted rigmarole of trying to climb the corporate ladder without really trying. The book is a must for corporate stuffed shirts who take themselves too seriously. It is almost a therapuetic bandaid to all of one's problems. I know - I almost popped a rib laughing at the comic timing of all the situations presented in Emanuel Carpenter's humorous take on all aspects of getting a job, keeping a job and adjusting to the mind-numbing parade of characters and psychos that one spends the better part of their days with, called co-workers and bosses. Emmanuel Capenter displayed his comic good timing and his writing dextrity by executing a perfect foil for stress- "A Job Ain't Nothing But Work."

"A Job Ain't Nothing But Work," is the written, laughing national anthem for work. The author, Emanuel Carpenter, does a great job of poking fun at the real side of working in the New Millenium. His take on humor will have you cracking up. As a retired military man, who is looking for a job, it was great relief and I could definitely identify with the various circumstances and situations presented in this book. The author is on the money about the perils of working: from explaining the desire or lack of desire to get off your butt and look for a job to dealing with the dynamic personalities and situations within the job place. His transitions are smooth, timely and very laughable. Trust me, you will be able to identify with the author's views and he will leave you with a smile on your face.

Review Date: 2004-09-23
This is the kind of book that could be made into an ethnic man's cinematic version of the cult classic, "Office Space". Emanuel Carpenter is a black man offering his candid perspective on the occupational hazards of, well occupations. The book is a series of frank insights wrapped in a cloak of humor. His experiences with a lifetime of seeking and gaining employment have provided him with valuable information he passes on to the next generation. He takes the grandiose ego of managers and supervisors down a peg or two; to him they are elevated employees who believe themselves to be way more important than they are. Tales of bizarre interviews and the interviewers who conducted them are recalled as a series of off the wall methods of finding the "right" person for the job. His tales of co-workers and their world do not focus much on race, but on the sheer weirdness of human nature in the corporate world. I found the constant trademark symbols (™) whenever he mentioned cars, fast food brands, office machines, and the like a bit distracting. Mr. Carpenter could have done it on purpose, in which case it added to the insanity of our label-intensive world. I would recommend this book especially for high school and college students about to embark on the corporate world.

During a time when unemployment is high and morale is low, Emanuel Carpenter's new book is quite apropos. He covers those moments most office workers have dreaded with both a keen eye and great humor-- the bathroom, office gatherings, and arriving to work late. While much of his advice is to be taken tongue-in-cheek, the main suggetion we should all keep in mind, whether looking for work or looking to get out of it, is that a job ain't nothing but work.

Startlingly honest portrait of life as a lawyer
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-27
I've never practiced law, but I still know a good book when I see one. This is no less than an excellent, detailed examination of what it's like to be a lawyer (in 1995, anyway). Author Walt Bachman focuses mostly on the negative aspects of the profession, but I never caught any unfair / invalid generalizations, or got the sense of a guy grinding an axe. The maladies he points out are well-reasoned and substantial, and definitely worth contemplating for aspiring law students.

The book is quick to dispel the glamorized image of lawyers in the media. Bachman claims the nature of the job to be highly stressful, in part because of excessive hours but even more because of the burden of being responsible for the fate of another. There's a vivid parable about a science experiment with several pairs of monkeys, in which only one of them had the ability to stop a painful electrical shock that affected them both. At one point, the scientists took away the control but the sense of responsibility remained, eventually causing all the "control" monkeys to die from stress.

Another major lesson is that morals, as defined by most of the population, have no place in the world of law. Your role is that of a moral mercenary, representing any client that comes your way no matter how reprehensible. Worse, arguing strategy is less about the battle of truths, and more about discrediting and attacking your opponent, humiliating and exploiting witnesses, or in some cases, simply prolonging the process so that the other side won't bother to fight. He also warns that the effects of all this often spill over into a lawyer's personal life, often jeopardizing personal relationships. Finally, he makes a precise claim that more than 40% of clients are complete "assholes" -- and since they usually seek like-minded lawyers, it drives the demand for regular, balanced lawyers even further.

Other complaints: the work is far more boring that it seems. Supposedly, most lawyers spend most of their days working out the minutiae in boring paperwork, and it's rare to see a trial room. Billable hours have become the dominating priority, even higher in importance than quality of work. Also, a disproportionate rise in the number of lawyers since the 70s means there are roughly 1,000,000 lawyers out there today -- way more than the market needs. He tells stories of many un- and under-employed new grads, and tells of the desperation to pay off crippling student debts.

I could go on, but why not just read it for yourself? Heck, it's only 140 pages.

Honest, well conceived, and to the point...

In nine quick and easily accessible chapters, Bachman outlines many striking truths about what an aspiring lawyer can expect to encounter in contemporary practice. This text is an absolute must read for anyone pondering law school.

Bachman reveals some brutal truths, such as "Lesson Seven: 10% of a lawyer's soul dies for every 100 billable hours worked in excess of 1,500 per year" (p.107). I appreciated his earnest approach to quantify, as scientifically as possible, his ideas about problems in the law.

As for others criticisms of this book- that he outlines only the problems and does not present possible solutions- well, that's just too bad. The very fact that he chooses not to is a direct reflection of the severity and fixed nature of these problems.

Excellent source for lawyers wannabe!

This book is mind opening for those who want to be lawyers. It presents the reality in the life of the lawyer within himself, family, work and society. It also presents the truth that lawyers are afraid to say when working for a firm. After reading it you might learn that the time and money spent might not be worthy. It is an insight in the career for those who know nothing about what they will be facing.

Should be required reading for all aspiring lawyers

A seasoned attorney gave me this book when I was in my third year of law school. Eight years later I remain very grateful that I received this gift, because it is the most poignant, blunt, and accurate synopsis of the legal profession I have ever come across. The point of this book is not to deter people from being lawyers or scare the daylights out of them. Rather, it aims to prepare aspiring lawyers for what lies ahead of them in the real world of the law. If you're in law school or thinking about going to law school this book will open your eyes to the practice of law, but even if you're already a practicing attorney there is plenty in here that you'll recognize and appreciate.

Excellent Beginning, Elaboration on Author's Analysis Needed
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-15
This book is EXCELLENT and the kind of book to buy and KEEP on one's shelf as a law student and lawyer. Fast moving, easily read in one afternoon but material to be digested slowly. The author's vivid, extraordinarily creative analogy of lawyering to a money experiment - only that one short chapter - is well worth the price of this book...and then some. That analogy was well-crafted, like a great trial lawyer would tell. What the author begins here on his sociological analysis is absolutely TOO DAMN GOOD to skim as he did. I was left wanting of more depth to his observation, more thought, more help.

To me, this book did not warrant five stars because I place a higher burden on this author with what he has started here. I feel it is the duty of an author of such intellect and keener, stronger analytical ability than others to take us not further, but deeper, into understanding what this book has the potential to do, what it introduces us to in its 140 pages.

NONETHELESS, this is the kind of book that needs to be written, one which needs to be read BY EVERYONE, NON LAWYERS ALIKE!!!! to better understand ourselves and our present society. Excellent beginning job for Walt Bachman.

I love this book! This is not just a book about dressing beautifully no matter your age, size, or budget; this is a book about bringing your inner beauty out into the world. Janet is a loving guide as she helps you connect with your essence and then helps you dress it into the most gorgeous package possible. If you can't work with Janet in person this is surely the next best thing.

This book is filled with humor and personal stories from Janet's own life that anyone can relate to. I laughed, I cried as I read this jewel of a book. I have read many sections over and over. This book is full of great information from a loving professional woman. She writes like she speaks and is full of compassion and geniune caring for women. Janet volunteers her time helping women with this information and more in addition to being a highly paid image consultant with some major Fortune 500 corporations. At this price to have her expert knowledge put into such an easy to read format, it is a gem that will become a classic. MUST READ.

Listen up, ladies! Buy this book -- (better yet, hire her if you live in the New Jersey area!) It's a quick read jam-packed full of her wise and witty adages, relatable stories and specific how-to's. It feels just like sitting down to chat with her over a cup of tea.

After hiring Janet to work with me as an Image Consultant, I knew I HAD to buy her book. She is such a font of wisdom -- and funny, too -- and so REAL. Reading and re-reading her book has re-affirmed and solidified everything I learned from her about how to "look damn good".

With Janet's help, I feel incredibly grounded and confident in my own beauty. I feel and look better than I ever have (even though I'm near the top of what I've ever weighed -- go figure!). And I get compliments wherever I go. (Which comes in handy as I am going through a divorce! LOL)

Do yourself a huge favor and buy this book. And buy a few extra copies to give to the special women in your life -- then you can help each other Look DAMN Good every day!

I was delighted to find a book that puts "caring" and "leadership/management" together. At a time when so much emphasis is put on risk management in Personnel/Human Relations, it is reassuring and liberating to have support in using our natural instincts in our roles in management.

James Autry takes us right down to the fundemental source of good management and successful relationships: a deep and abiding respect for the people that we share our work and our lives with. A corporate culture is something that we create, one person at a time not some "evil other" that demands that we abandon our principles and our humanity.

A most humane perspective on the science of management.

Like most middle managers, I sometimes feed compelled to read a management tome from time to time. Love and Profit is different! It proves that a financially successful company does not necessarily have an inverse relationship to one that is humane. Autry writes in short segments, usually of an anecdote from his career, and then analyzes it from a business perspective. There are a lot of Aha! moments in this book. This book shows us how we should treat others in all situations - which makes it all the more exceptional as a business book. The only reason there is a 9 in my rating is the poetry

Cold lemonade on a hot afternoon

As an in-house leadership development consultant for a large company, I read alot of management books. This one is truly a keeper! It isn't full of "fad", impossible ideas about exploiting employees, just ethical ideas to consider about people, in the workplace --what should that environment should be like and how should supervisors and managers contribute to creating and sustaining it.

Reading this book is like enjoying a cold lemonade on a hot afternoon. It is a fun and easy read that really makes you stop and consider the basic, critical, beliefs about how we should treat each other -- in the workplace or anywhere.

I strongly recommend this book, which considers both "love" and "profit" in the workplace -- it is neither an oxymoron nor illegal.

Wes,

Is a very impresssive guy. While well established and respected. He is the all American clean cut, well spoken and super professional. If I had a large corporation, I would hire him in a heartbeat to do a motivational
speech and workshop. He reminds me of some of the famous folks that fill concert halls with motivational tools but in a much smoother fashion.he remimds me of the College quarterback with the 4.0 and the complete package. He is a great guy and deserves all the fame and fourtune that comes with the program. He reminds me of one of the guys on the "Apprentice" that is super motivated and talented. This is 100% true and unbiased in anyway, shape or form. Kepp up the great work, and keep the golf handicap down!
All the best...Buddy

Wes Moss "bootstrapped" his first ventures when he was in his teens, turning his businesses into award-winning, prosperous enterprises. Moss appeared as a candidate on NBC's popular show, The Apprentice, with Donald Trump. A graduate in economics from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Moss became a vice president at one of the world's largest investment firms after just five years. He is also a Certified Financial Planner(tm), managing more than $100 million in investments for high-net-worth individuals and corporations. Moss has been interviewed on The Today Show, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox and Friends, Regis and Kelly, and radio stations around the country. "Wes reminds me of a West Point cadet ...it's just his demeanor, his attitude, and his level of strength."

-Donald Trump

There's a special class of entrepreneurs that Fate seems to have smiled upon: the overnight gazillionaires. Perhaps they got in on the cusp of the dot-com bubble, or stumbled onto some mundane product the world nonetheless seemed to be waiting for, or caught the eye of an angel investor who graced them with a healthy infusion of cash. Frankly, you can't relate to such stories. You'd love to start your own business--you even have an idea you're excited about--but you're relatively certain you weren't born under a lucky star. Is there a point to even trying . . . or should you just keep plugging away at your day job? Don't despair, says Wes Moss, author of Starting from Scratch: Secrets from 21 Ordinary People Who Made the Entrepreneurial Leap (Dearborn Trade Publishing, November 2005, ISBN: 1-4195-2106-3, $22.00). You don't have to hit the "business lottery" to make a nice living on entrepreneurial avenue. Passion and good old-fashioned elbow grease go a long, long way. "I wrote this book because I wanted to prove that ordinary people can take charge of their financial destiny," says Moss, an investment firm V.P. who is best known as the cool, calm, and collected candidate on season two of NBC's The Apprentice with Donald Trump. "I wanted to restore people's faith in the American Dream. It's not about having the planets line up just right. There's nothing magical about entrepreneurship, but it is a hugely rewarding way to live your life." To start your own business and make it work, you'll need both practical advice and inspiration. Moss provides hefty doses of both. In Starting from Scratch, successful entrepreneurs from 21 different industries and business concepts--a lawyer turned gourmet baker, a paralegal turned yoga studio owner, a saleswoman turned designer shoe retailer--reveal real-life secrets that can set you on the road to financial independence. (The book's subjects have an average net worth between $2 million and $20 million.) The bite-size, business-secret-packed stories in this book make entrepreneurship sound downright doable. In fact, Moss has identified a four-step mode of operation that led all of his book subjects to success.

I've read 65 or 70 books on the Christian marketplace movement in the last 8 years. This is the first book (on this topic) I've read that opened my eyes and heart at the same time, showing me what God is doing in the marketplace and how He wants to use me as a piece of His glorified puzzle. I recommend you buy this book, read it and then order a case to pass out to your friends. That's what I did!

Like many others, I had heard and read much on Christians in business and the marketplace but it never seemed to be accompanied with any real and practical application. In this book, Bob Frazer has been able to articulate the reality of what God is really doing in every area of the marketplace beyond a conceptual viewpoint. He has tasted it, breathed it and lived it. I found it of great encouragement to push into God and pursue what He has placed within me. Great to find a likeminded one. If you are serious about God and your/His business you better grab hold of this book.
