Making College Count has to be the most realistic, accurate account of college success available to students today. Not only does one encounter all details of college life, but many aspects of life beyond the books. Pat O'Brien came to speak to my graduating senior class this year about the reality of college and how to make the best of it. I think it was a good thing to put the end in perspective first and make goals for yourself in order to make your path towards success even more efficient. His Winning Characteristics are not always easy to accomplish, but with discipline and hard work anyone can achieve them. Basic tips on studying, getting to know professors, extracurricular activites, and internships are helpful in envisioning your undergraduate years as challenging, but exciting experiences. Overall, O'Brien offers sufficient and real information that every college freshmen should know, and if he or she utilizes O'Briens advice they will be much more likely to be successful.

This is a very good, perhaps great [?], book masquerading as a "how to succeed in business" tome. It is in reality a powerful handbook for those of us in the 4th period of life to try to make some sense of all we have done, all we have left undone, & what is the purpose of it all. I'm 65; I found this a clever combination of Jung, Jung's theory of the 'shadow', & strong suggestions for living with inner tranquility & financial success; O'Neil is a gifted & insightful writer; I doubt that many under the age of 50 would find this book worthwhile - my opinion. A minor criticism: O'Neil cites 6 - 8 - 10 authorities in this field who have written books; he provides an index; but no bibliography? Why? A very minor criticism. Extremely well done. Easy to read.

It is an amazing journey through our deepest fears and questions about life whether personal or professional. The first part goes through those questions all of us have or have had combined with real life examples and a second part where the author shares his insight as to what to do with all those questions and answers we start to get by reading the book.

I have read this book once before back in 1995. Since then I have learned a lot about shadows. I am aware of my shadows and this book is helping me to be a better person.
I have a friend who is intellegent and smart. However, after reading this book second time I am beginning to know his hubris and. I do not know how to relate with this person.
Knowing my own shadows I am now less critical of others. We all have multi-selves.
The book should be read by any adult who wants to have a balanced perspectives of life and deal with others appropriately.

Must read for all leaders

I first read this book when it came out, at the time the O. J. Simpson story was just breaking. It was PERFECT timing - offering insights into how otherwise highly-successful people can have darker sides show up in their lives unless they periodically renew themselves and take stock - what might be called taking an "internal audit" of oneself. I've often thought the title for this book could have been "The Shadow Side of Success."

I highly recommend this book for anyone who's in a position of influence, power and responsibility (or who WANTS to be). The author has included a rich assortment of ways one can avoid the egoic pitfalls of success and fame - a real MASTERPIECE!

David Fischman has a wonderfully loving way of expressing truths through the "Master" character that makes them easily understood. I really like his approach and have already passed this book on to the next person who I know will benefit from it. It's no coincidence that this book became available to me the way it did. The connections that are made between our thoughts, actions and reactions and our past is clearly illustrated and the message cannot be missed. If you are truly ready to move beyond the seduction of historical thought processes that affect all areas of your life, get this book. A great read and a wonderful AH-HA! Enjoy!

A first rate professional book. It deals with complex issues in a clear, intelligent and original way. The book offers a lot of added value to both consultants and managers. I find myself leafing through it many times, never failing to find new insights. The book contains both a thorough theoretical analysis and practical tools and concrete tips for dealing with tough issues that impact organizations, such as power, accountability and the "positional trap" . The book is full of inpiring insights on the possibilities of making organizations more robust through empowering people. After reading the book, we cannot help it but seing systems in a new and refreshing way.

Seeing Systems is a brilliant book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-25
Seeing Systems is a brilliant book; Dr. Oshry has here succeeded in
relating a set of practicable principles in a highly readable and
entertaining fashion. The particular charm of Seeing Systems -- what
distinguishes it from other books of its type -- is in its pedagogical
style; it is designed not only to describe, but to teach the theories
which are there presented for inspection. The teaching itself is
twofold; the first part (which Dr. Cummings seems to think should be
the only part) consists in explaining an abstract theoretical model
for systems thinking. The second part is phenomenological, in that it
seeks to help the reader identify and sympathize with a range of
experiences that occur in system life. To this end, Dr. Oshry employs
evocative description and sympathetic re-enactment to great effect.
The result is that the contents of the book are easiest to remember
when that of other books are easiest to forget -- that is, when one is
caught up in a whirlwind of intense experiences.

The phenomenological part of the book manifests itself in the
distinctive manner of phenomenology; as winding and discursive. There
is no remedy for it, other than to stop doing phenomenology. If it
were not phenomenological, Seeing Systems would be as Dr. Cummings has
described it -- a mere shadow of "Systems Thinking: managing chaos and
complexity". Its prosody would be direct, as direct as it was dull;
its illustrations quite businesslike, and forgettable. It would never
be lightened with something so childish and so right as a mob of black
dots at a committee meeting. It would be a primly respectable little
book, fit to grace an executive desktop and be charming until opened.
And I for one should not read it.

Thankfully, Seeing Systems is not such a shadow. It deigns to stay
charming even after it is opened. It is not like other books in the
same field; but those books have been written already, and by other
authors. It is a book unto itself, and is all the better for it.

I read this book about 6 years a go as a part of my graduate program on organizational learning. My reaction at that time was, "Wow! I feel as if I was blind and Now I See!." It was like I gained a secret lens through which the organizational behaviors were making more sense to me. I felt so enthralled with the book, I called the number on the back of the book to inquire how I could explore, experience and learn the Seeing Systems concepts further. I have not done that before or since. 6 years later, I still feel Barry Oshry's teachings are one of real gems in understanding organizations and their behavior mysteries. I have integrated these concepts into my own ways of thinking and being and use them to generate partnerships for impact. I most highly recommend this book to anyone who works with organizations including executives, organizational developers and change agents.

Indispensible Principles from the Original Self Help Visionary

Review Date: 2008-08-22
As difficult and improbable as it might seem to match the excellence of Think & Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill accomplished the task with this book. If Succeed & Grow Rich Through Persuasion has any weakness, it is that it followed Think & Grow Rich that already introduced us to may of these fine principles.

Napoleon Hill has the astounding ability to communicate success principles in a resounding nature. He uses real world illustrations that provide timeless examples to justify his points. Hill follows his book of principals with a full chapter on motivational epigrams that will leave even the most lethargic of people energized.

Napoleon Hill was a visionary in the self help industry and Succeed & Grow Rich Through Persuasion represents yet another dynamic and fulfilling example of his work. This book easily stands on its own merits yet is also the perfect compliment to Hill's earlier works. I highly recommend this book to all seeking to achieve at any endeavor.

Wealth of Information

Review Date: 2007-08-15
I'm still in the middle of this book. Some of it is a little silly, and I gleam over those parts in a rush. They are relatively few and far in between, and the wealth of useful knowledge and insight throughout the rest of the book is worth it. I am beginning to apply many of the principles for the first time... its not a magic formula, but it has initiated noticeable progress where before I was stagnating for some time. Its small and easy to carry around to read when you only have one or two minutes available.

The only strange thing about this edition is that authorship is credited to Napoleon Hill, but much of the book speaks of Hill in third person, as if the revising author (who I think is W. Clement Stone) takes liberty to speak on behalf of the original author.

Among my first batch of books...with greatest influence on attaining personal achievement in life!
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-21
The first batch of significant books that had the greatest influence on me in terms of attaining personal achievement includes mostly Napoleon Hill's books:

- The Law of Success;
- Think & Grow Rich;
- The Keys to Success;
- Success through a Positive Mental Attitude;
- Succeed & Grow Rich through Persuasion;

The others were from Clement Stone, Dale Carnegie, & Earl Nightingale.

That was the early 70's when I had just started work as a young engineer.

The author, Napoleon Hill, had impressed me most by his relentless dedication in spending some two to three decades of his life in pursuing & researching the success secrets of the rich & famous...with a little help from Andrew Carnegie, of course.

As matter of fact, many of the famous people he interviewed were also favourite role models of mine e.g. Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, just to name a few

Till this day, I have never forgotten what he said:

"The most powerful instrument we have in our hands is the power of our mind."

I have never ceased to be fascinated by the simplicity & the potency of his ABCs of personal achievement: CONCEIVE, BELIEVE & ACHIEVE!

It is certainly enlightening to note that even Stephen Covey had drew inspiration from Napoleon Hill's work even though he never made that credit. He only admitted that the
7 Habits had its origins from "200 years of success literature in the United States." That remark itself is self explanatory.

Anthony Robbin's Mastery program as embodied in his books as well as his audio/video resources is no exception, even though he has been influenced in larger extent by NLP.

If you look at & compare the 17 principles of personal achievement in 'The Law of Success' &/or the 13 Steps to Riches in 'Think & Grow Rich', one can obviously see the uncanny resemblance of the 7 Habits & the Mastery principles...in one way or another.

At this juncture, let me outline the principal theme of each book:

The Law of Success: the original course on the fundamentals of success - all the seventeen essential principles of personal achievement;
Think & Grow Rich: The seventeen essential principles are reframed & condensed in terms of thirteen concrete steps to wealth creation (in actuality, this is a condensation of the Law of Success);
The Keys to Success: a further elaboration of the seventeen essential principles with concrete suggestions, exercises & advice;
Success Through Positive Mental Attitude: joint authorship with Clement Stone, with a further emphasis on developing a positive mental attitude;
Succeed & Grow Rich Through Persuasion: joint authorship with Clement Stone, with a further emphasis on developing master salesmanship & networking;
[It is pertinent to note that Clement Stone actually built his insurance business empire with these principles.]

My most productive, personal learning experience from Napoleon Hill's work is the understanding - & application - of his success principle #1: Develop Definiteness of Purpose.

[Very surprisingly, J Y Pillay, former Chairman of Singapore Airlines, - who had been credited for building the airline to what it is today, A GREAT WAY TO FLY! - also credited his work axiom to this same success principle, but he attributed it to an ancient Hindu scripture known as Bhagavad Gita.]

I am certainly gratified to note that Napoleon Hill's work had casted so much influence on - & empowered - so many people in the world, including myself.

Great book on mastering persuasion!

I have to admit that I am a confirmed fan of Napolean Hill. I love Think & Grow Rich, have bought many copies and recently added the new and revised hardback to my library.

Succeed and Grow Rich Through Persuasion was one of those books that was collecting dust on my library shelf. I had browsed t his book a couple of times, but never read it completely. In fact, I have been doing that with a lot of my books recently.

The principles in Succeed and Grow Rich are like the principles in Think & Grow Rich. They are timeless. And they work. If you want to master persuasion, read this book.

I met Nick Irons and his mom, Connie, two and a half years ago in Chicago at an awards celebration after his book won an award. Having finally read Swim Lessons, I realize what extraordinary things we can accomplish if our reason WHY is strong enough. Oftentimes, a person presents a challenging idea, and people emphasize the impossibilities. Nick's WHY was strong, his father has Multiple Sclerosis and Nick wanted to raise awareness of and funds for MS research to find a cure. The HOW fell into place with the entire Irons family and volunteer crew members stepping forward along the way. If swimming 1550 miles down the Mississippi was not enough, Nick fulfilled another extraordinary feat--a 10,000 mile bike-ride around the United States. Nick, I hope you are writing another book about this journey. A worthy read and an inspirational holiday gift whether or not you are touched by MS.

Nick Irons and his amazing family have done it again! As if swimming the Mississippi River and cycling around the perimeter of the continental U.S. was not enough, they had to write a really inspiring book. Nick makes it very clear that even though he was the one doing the swimming, it would not have happened without the help of his family and friends. Swim Lessons not just catalogs Nick's big swim down the Big Muddy in an authentic voice but it also adds practical tips on accomplishing goals. Just telling the compelling story would have been too self-serving for Nick who seems to be driven to help others. The size of the goals Nick and his family have accomplished lends credibility to the advice.

I recommend this book to anyone (young or old) who would like to learn about the interesting story of the Mississippi Swim for Multiple Sclerosis, creative fundraising and public relations, or pushing yourself to realize your dreams. It's also a touching testament to the power of love and family. Congratulations Nick (and family) for producing this wonderful book and thanks for sharing your story and ideas.

I could identify with many of the Type A "good girl" women Quinlan describes. She's right on target. She makes you think about your daily life in a whole new way. And, afterall, this is first step in making a change.

I recently read Mary Lou Quinlan's book and enjoyed it because at times, Women Can't Do It All! Being a mother, a spouse, taking care of the house and managing a career doesn't always provide women with the time to take a break and consider what we want for ourselves. This Sunday's NYTimes (business section) interview with Mary Lou Quinlan made me realize that this is a much bigger issue.

We need to slow down, take charge of our lives and start
LIVING, rather than racing.

Sometimes we need know it's o.k. to cry "uncle."

As I was reading this book, I felt like I had met my soul mate. I, too, am a Type-A "good girl." ("You need this report by Friday, would Thursday be better?") Fortunately for me, I was forced into a sabbatical before I really knew that I needed one (and then, of course, spent the next two years struggling with the fact that I had my entire identity wrapped up in my job/career, that only now am I beginning to enjoy life). I was floored when Mary Lou wrote about being so tired that incurring enough injuries to require a stay in the hospital (without being life-threatening) seemed an attractive way to take a break from the craziness. That thought had crossed my mind more times than I would like to admit. If you're thinking about taking time off, or are so tired that you can't even think, then you might want to pick this book up. Even if you can't financially swing a sabbatical, it's helpful to understand that you are not alone in feeling overwhelmed with your life.

4 Way Win

Review Date: 2008-11-28
The purpose of Total Leadership is to "improve performance in all domains of life--work, home, community, and self." It's not at all about balancing the 4. Rather, it's about "creating mutual value among them." Doing this successfully is a 4-way win. This premise is similar to those expressed by Stephen Covey's in his 7 Habits of Highly Successful People.

Exercises accompany each chapter. Initial ones focus on identifying values and testing if proper focus is being applied to them. Next, readers identify stakeholders in their lives. They work to collect information about their stakeholders' expectations and share their expectations as well. Additional exercises are geared toward coming up with actions that will provide benefits in multiple domains. It's all about making your values come alive in everyday actions within the 4 domains.

Friedman's states, "Being a leader means inspiring committed action that engages people in taking intelligent steps in a direction you have chosen, to achieve something that has significant meaning for all relevant parties."

If people take the time to do the exercises in the book, and make the commitment to follow up on the suggested actions, at the very least they will clarify their values and become more productive. More importantly, they'll also have a good shot at improving the lives of themselves and those around them.

This is a somewhat odd book. I'm not very familiar with field of self-improvement books, and had to read it as a part of a work assignment. I've read through about a third before giving up due to being very bored (thank goodness assignment was not really mandatory).
I suppose this is just one set of many recepies for people that are very unhappy with their life up to the point of being fully paralyzed and now knowing how to start changing things. While idea of "stakeholders" may seem new for some people, it's only logical to ask people that you are involved with about what exactly they expect from you, so you know what expectations you're supposed to live up to. And general advise is "try to change things and see where it leads you".

The best kind of self-help!

About 16 hours into the return trip from Japan, I started reading this book, so the circumstances were far from ideal. Even so, I really enjoyed reading the work! This is one of those books that is the culmination of much work, both in the classroom over a period of many years and in Stew's personal life, and the quality of the thinking and writing is simply superb as a result. Basically, this is a self-help book, and I'd recommend it to anyone. However, there is a major caveat: to really use the book requires weeks and, realistically, months of working through the exercises in prioritizing, reflecting, communicating with others, experimenting, and monitoring the results of experiments. Having said that, I can't imagine a better time investment for most of us. This is incredibly insightful, honest, and ultimately caring and humane. Great stuff!

I have read this book as one of my elective courses at Wharton West. Prof. Friedman discussed in his book about how acting with authenticity (being real), integrity (being whole), and creativity (being innovative) affects performance. By acting with authenticity, I feel much more purposeful at work and home. I am more committed and drive persistently in myself and people around me, which help to improve the performance for myself as well as people around me. The leadership skills I have learned from this book:

Align actions with core values by choosing what matters most: I become more result oriented and focus on those important tasks that matter most to my core values.

Cultivate awareness of true leadership priorities in all domains: I have shared the new concept of leadership in this class with my boss, my colleagues, my husband, my son and friends and I do see the action from all domains.

Ethically influence others to generate support in all domains: The efforts I have put in the experiments have generated positive results both at work and home.

I hope this review help you to choose this book and act with urgency to lead a richer life with four ways win at work, family, community and personal level.

What a Fantastic Read!

Thank you Stew Friedman! This work is engaging, enlightening, and inspirational--giving us all insight into what it means to be a 'Total Leader.' It answers the fundamental question most people ask about how to integrate all of the various pieces of our lives. I especially enjoy hearing the stories of the Total Leadership participants, and how they've grown and are able to see the world in a different light after going through the program!

I'm definitely sold on this Total Leadership Program! However, it is, not without constant work and reevaluation, as Friedman notes, that we can achieve both a meaningful and professionally successful life. I recommend this book to anyone, especially women and those in transition, as a useful guide about how to structure your life in a meaningful and productive way. It certainly helps me rethink the things that are important to me in my day to day life. :)

The "how to" leadership books are spilling off the shelves, so I thought that "Trust Me" to be another ineffective book on this subject. However, as I began to read I couldn't put the book down. I read it through in 2 days. I've then re-read it 2 times. It is GREAT!

Ron Potter and Wayne Hastings have managed to peel away to the true core of leadership.

From insight about the greatest leader of all time to colorful stories about other leaders, it's a riveting book.

This book has personally changed my life and my leadership style. I have incorporated the principles from the book and have created personal goals in an attempt to be a better leader.

If you lead people...either a business executive, production line worker, a team player or a parent, "Trust Me' is essential reading.

Character Inside before Power Accumulates Outside: That's How Leaders Evolve

I found this book fascinating as the authors focus on the internal world of leaders who are trustworthy, and the nurture of a character that others will want to follow. My favorite quotes:
--To be teachable, one must devote a significant amount of time to learning.
--Leaders are defined buy those who follow them.
--A successful mentoring experience does require a significant prerequisite: a quality person to mentor.
--The mentoring or coaching role is mainly about creating a safe environment to discuss any topic.
--Trustworthiness means being reliable, faithful, and unfailing. Trustworthy leaders are honest and transparent, committed, dedicated, and keep promises and confidences. They also have the moral courage to do the right thing and to stand up for what they believe even when it is difficult to do so.
--In practical, day-to-day leadership, only what is accomplished matters.
--Compared to high-profile leaders with big personalities who make headlines and become celebrities, the good-to-great leaders [leaders who have taken companies to unprecedented long-term growth] seem to have come from Mars. Self-effacing, quiet, reserved, even shy--these leaders are a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will. They are more like Lincoln and Socrates than Patton or Caesar.
For aspiring leaders, this book will help you clarify the character traits needed inside before the power accumulates outside.

SPIRITUAL VALUES & LEADERSHIP

Review Date: 2005-05-20
Presents a style of leadership based on 8 values: humility; development; commitment; focus; compassion; integrity; peacemaking; and endurance. The authors explore how these spiritual values are keys to building trust with people and becoming a successful leader, as well as building a successful career. This book has its distinct point of view-no question about it. But given the abundance of bad leadership in business, politics, and other spheres, the spiritual qualities this book links with effective leadership deserve serious consideration.

Wayne Hastings and Ron Potter have written an inspirational book that provides the key principles we all need to guide us in our personal and business lives. It is a book to be kept close at hand to keep our thinking and actions on the path of a principle based life. The real life stories and the opportunity provided to reflect after each chapter with thought provoking questions about ourselves and how we interact with others helps teach us how to be leaders others can trust.
