A Cornucopia of Visual Representation for Gothic Architecture
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-23
At what must easily rank as the single best book on medieval architecture for the layman, "Principles and Elements of Medieval Church Architecture in Western Europe" by Les Editions Fragile is a cornucopia of visual delights. The book consists of detailed diagrams and drawings, extensive informational material, and a glossary of terms all rolled into an aesthetically brilliant design. Translated from the original French, the book does contain a small share of textual errors and irregularities, but this is certainly the most brilliant execution of the topic I've seen to date. I originally picked up both the French and the English versions in Amiens, France, during a visit to the massive Amiens cathedral, and have since used the books to illuminate and extend my understanding of medieval church architecture. The volume covers both Romanesque and Gothic architecture. It's not an inexpensive text considering its relatively short length, but I must say that for anyone wishing to learn and understand this topic more fully, the book is fully worth the price. I only wish more texts like this were available. Seven out of five stars.

George Nelson: Design is much more than "Design"
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-31
We all know the designs of George Nelson, but I was amazed at the depth of understanding revealed in this book. Mr. Nelson ranges far and wide on why design is so important in elements much larger than a piece of furniture. Nothing less than society and cities is fair game for his take on the world. Mr. Nelson asks why things are the way that they are and examines urban centers to see what works and what fails. If all you expected was a set of pretty pictures of his chairs, then you should pick one of the many other books that cover his designs. But if you want to know the WHY's of what he designed, then this book will begin to explain the far-reaching approach of one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. Highly recommended!

British propaganda efforts to trick U.S. into entering WWI
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1997-12-29
I am so glad to find this title and order it. Although it's been years since I read this book while a student at the U.S. Army Intelligence School, its impact on my awareness of propaganda and allied persuasive activities has stayed with me. The author, an insider in the campaign to trick the U.S. into joining Britain in WWI, covers in detail the various levels and means of deception employed by the British, and coordinated by a single committee charged with succeeding in bringing the US into the war. Financial bondage (because the British purposely set out to borrow so much of our money that we could not afford to let them lose), lecturers and actors on tour circuits around our country, political intrigues, "spin-doctored" news and propaganda, planting a fake diplomatic telegram, the Lusitania affair, and, of course, Colonel House, the anglophile counselor to Wilson's White House, were some of the ploys used.

Frederic O'Brady, currently back in Paris on the stage, was from 1964 to 1972 an extraordinarily successful teacher of French at Princeton University. Propos pertinents et impertinents, developed at Princeton for use in his innovative conversation course, benefits on every page from the author's wide range of experience as an actor, linguist, and teacher. O'Brady landed his first role in Hungary when he was 15 by faking a lisp; his play and film credits since then, in perhaps a dozen languages, include Orson Welles Monsieur Arkadin and the dubbing in French of Peter Lorre's voice in many thrillers (O'Brady is listed in a who's-who of movie heavies). He began WWII in the French Foreign Legion and ended it in jail, having been imprisoned in Marseilles for aiding British agents. His artistry as a puppeteer, discussed in Charles Gervais's Marionnettes et Marionnettistesde France, was seen here when he appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. In 1960-61 he toured America in the French review La Plume de ma tante. Since 1950 he has published three novels in French and one in English. His autobiography "All Told", published in 1964, contains an account of his music, his languages, his pioneering experiences with acupuncture, and other aspects of his life that have contributed to the shaping of Propos Pertinents et Impertinents, a book which brings a much-needed measure of wit to French Instruction at the University Level.

Form and Function in Church Architecture
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-05
I have recently read two other of James F. White's works. This is a very practical analysis of the theological function behind the various historical forms of church architecture. His emphasis is on the font, altar, and pulpit in various treatments of worship space. He limits himself to the main sanctury. Historical development is focused on the understanding of present practice. He gives perspective on Eastern and Western traditions, the American developments in the West, recent studies of Early Christianity, and recent changes due to Pentecostal theology. He is a defender of lay involvement in worship with an emphasis on the work of worship in liturgy. This is an easy read, and a good introduction to his other works on worship.
