A terrific find at the Picasso Musuem in ParisReview Date: 2003-09-15
This book, published in 1987 by the Museum, has a wonderful collection of black and white photographs taken by the Brassai -- a Transylvanian-born journalist turned emigre photographer in Paris -- of Picasso, Picasso's works (including sculpture and art), and Picasso's studio. Brassai (1899-1984), to whom Picasso turned as his personal photographer, is also world renowned for his photos of Paris where he engaged in multiple interests in art, literature, sculpture and cinema. Brassai also collaborated in other ways with Picasso, the painter and sculptor, including through various dialogues the two mutually admiring artists held, glimpses of which come through in the pages of this book.
Brassai's photographer's eye, which makes this book a visual feast, is the subject of comment by other admirers in this book, including Henry Miller.

Jewish to Catholic Conversion StoryReview Date: 2001-05-25
Growing up as a Jew in Germany, prior to and during World War II, Stern offers great insights into Judaism and Catholicism under Hitler.
This compelling book, and Stern himself, played a major role in the conversion of Dr. Bernard Nathanson to the Catholic faith. Nathanson is a former abortionist and the former head of NARAL who published his own book, "The Hand of God."
The last chapter, Stern's letter to his brother, is alone worth the price of the book.

Exploring Silent LIfe of PlantsReview Date: 2008-07-13
"The present volume gives a connected and popular account of the researches that have been carried out in the Bose Institute, one of the objects of which...is to associate the advancement of knowledge with the widest possible civic and public diffusion of it.
In pursuing investigations on the border region of physics and physiology, I was amazed to find boundary lines vanishing and points of contact emerge between the realms of the Living and Non-Living. Metals are found to respond to stimuli; they are subject to fatigue, stimulated by certain drugs and 'killed' by poisons.
Between inorganic matters at one extreme end and animal life at the other, there is spread out the vast expanse of the silent life of plants. ....
I have been able to make the dumb plant the most eloquent chronicler of its inner life and experiences by making it write down its own history. ....
I shall take my readers with me step by step as the wonders become gradually revealed to me through artificial organs of extraordinary sensitiveness by which alone the realm of the invisible could be explored. ....."

Denys Sutton provides a nice introduction, four pages in length, (albeit, they are huge pages!), with a quotation from Apollinaire. There are a total of 16 loosely attached and beautifully reproduced prints from Picasso's pink and blue periods included in the book. The book's size is 11" x 15," pehaps 3/8" thick in this softcover version. The prints vary somewhat in their dimensions but the largest is about 10 1/2" x 8".
Picasso lived from 1881 until 1973.
Partially gleaned and edited from two other websites: "The Bohemian atmosphere of the turn of the 19th-20th Century Parisian streets fascinated Picasso and his great friend, Casagemas, from the very beginning.
Paintings from this short period prior to the Picasso blue period are marked with enthusiasm. Reminiscent of works by Gauguin, Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec, they portrayed life in Paris's dance halls and bars. The two young men must have found life in the French capital incredibly liberal subsequent to a conservative and constricted life in Spain.
This happy period was cut short in February, 1901. Casagemas shot himself in a local bar, having been rejected by a model called Germaine. Without his friend and companion, Picasso's euphoria for Paris life ended.
The Picasso blue period did not fully begin until the summer of that year, by which time Picasso had assimilated the tragic death. Picasso later stated that he only began painting in blue once he had actually accepted that his dear friend was dead.
The blue, of course, represented his melancholy existence. The paintings from the Picasso blue period do not deal solely with Casagemas' death, but they do concentrate on solitude and lack of love. This period lasted until 1904."
"In Paris, Picasso's contact with innovative art circles led to his 'pink period', which lasted from 1904 to 1906."
In this volume, we get to see reproductions of the following works:
1. Mateu F. De Soto, 1901
2. Maternite, 1901
3. La Maison Bleue, 1902
4. L'Etreinte, 1903
5. Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe De La Famille Soler, 1903
6. Clown A Cheval, 1904
7. Les Deux Amies, 1904
8. Jeune Garcon Nu Sur Un Cheval, 1904
9. Acrobates, 1905
10. Nature Morte Au Tableau, 1905
11. Mere Et Enfant, 1905
12. Femme A La Chevelure, 1905
13. Grand Nu Rose, 1905
14. Famille D'Acrobates Avec Singe, 1905
15. Jeune Fille A La Corbeille, 1905
16. Les Adolescents, 1905
On the book cover is "Jaime Sabartes," 1901. There is also a pencil drawing (reproduced) in the introduction of a near naked man, sitting on a rock.
Now, I can tell you that these prints are easily removed from the book and people have done so because some slug did it to my (ex-library) copy, absconding with "L'Etreinte"! So if you plan to buy a copy of this book, you might want to affirm in advance of your purchase that all the prints are intact.
I can't vouch for the actual value of this book but I would have gladly paid $30 or $40 dollars to own it. A person who is really into art might be willing to pay a great deal more, but my interest in Picasso is more casual.
I hope that this information has been helpful to you!
