I found this book better than three or four others I had looked through. Complete in that it covers areas the other books neglect. The exams at each chapter end bring the reading and exercises into focus. Do the same with the Design and Implement book guys.

This lexicon has been of the utmost assistance in my latest translation work on a piece dating around 1026 AD, where classical Latin dictionaries made me more confused than ever. It's now an indispensable part of my library. It is definitely a must-have for anyone beginning a career in medieval history or literature.

"Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert."

-Isaiah 43:18-19

"... This manual is itself a parable of transformation---telling some of the change-story of MCS and of the broader mediation field. At the first MCS Summer Training Institute in 1985, we participants were each given a slim manila folder in which to collect the week's hand-outs. Copied on blue paper and pre-dating high-class wordprocessing and copying equipment, their somewhat ragged look is still precious to me---like the new teeth of a young child. Ron Kraybill's early distillation on paper of so many key concepts condirmed my own growth and invited me onward---both spiritually and intellectually. By the time I joined the staff in 1988, Dave Brubaker had organized 40 or so pages into loose-leaf binders for the now popular and oft-repeated training institutes. But Ron's bulging black "trainer's notebook," the mounting stack of Conciliation Quarterly newsletters, and John Paul Lederach's arrival were daily reminders of the burgeoning field and foreshadowed the rich editorial work that lay ahead. 1989 and 1992 each brought published training manuals, both editions a bit weightier in pages---and hopefully in diversity of voices and collective wisdom---than the last. In the 1995 third edition, editors Jim Stutzman and Carolyn Schrock-Shenk added much depth to issues of power, justice and diversity.

Each edition also continued to radiate farther and farther beyond those first 20 institute participants reading their blue study sheets in the Mennonite Central Committee chapel---into universities, community centers, church basements, and groups of people gathered here and there to ponder peace under the welcome shade of a tree. Now this change process has taken yet another step with this 2000 edition for the on-going benefit and growth of us all: trainers and students alike.

"Transformation." The term began to emerge in various writings in the field in the late 1980s and first appeared in the title of the MCS training manual in 1992. In the 2000 edition, it is as ubiquitous throughout the manual's varied authors and chapters as it is in our North American lingo at-large. While some efforts have been made to "capture" the term, to give it a prescriptive definition---as in "transformative mediation" ---like the concept itself, it cannot really be "fixed." For it---and we---and those whom we serve with these "foundations and skills for constructive conflict transformation" ---need always to be poised, ready to "do a new thing."

Do you not perceive it?

Mad and brilliant

The masterpiece of Chateaubriand is the epitome of romanticism: describing his whole life from his birth to his grave (the book was supposed to be published after his death), he speaks of litterature, religion, politic, love, architecture, he embraces everything and lets nothing in dark. Of course he has peremptory opinions on everything, his studied humility hardly hides a tremendous pride, and many aspects of his toughts and opinions now seem out of date or prejudicied. But many things remain very interesting even now, from his general thoughts on the French revolution to his funny little anecdotes (for example, he met in the deepest forests of Canada a former ballet dancer from Versailles who now dedicated his life to politely teach court dances to the Hurons).

And there's the style. The wonderful, shamelessly romantic style of the author, precise when needed, marvellously lyrical all the time, a style so impressive that the young Victor Hugo was to say : "I'll be Chateaubriand or nothing".

Iritating at time, but always fascinating, one of the greatest books of the 19th century.

A very good introduction to basic problems of philosophy
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-27
This book is based on conversations - interviews that Magee conducted for a BBC series . In it he tries to introduce philosophical problems and ideas to a wider audience. The written text of the book was based on the transcripts of the talks. But these were worked on considerably both by Magee and those he interviewed. The effort was to make as readable a text as possible and to eliminate the repetitions, the paraphanelia of speech. He opens the dialogues with a talk with Sir Isaiah Berlin on the question of why anyone should take an interest in Philosophy. Berlin talks about the way we all live with assumptions which when questioned philosophically undermine our security. And he indicates that as one possible reason why so many avoid philosophy. On the other hand he says when there is no questioning when all is taken as it is , the mind and imagination dry up. In these lectures Magee does not allow the mind and imagination to dry up. He engages in dialogue with many of the most prominent philosophers of our time beginning with Berlin, and then Charles Taylor, Herbert Marcuse, William Barrett, Anthony Quinton, A.J. Ayer, Bernard Williams, R.M. Hare, W.V. Quine, John Searle, Noam Chomsky, Hilary Putnam, Ronald Dworkin, Iris Murdoch, Ernest Gellner. He tries to be inclusive in these talks and have representatives of all the major schools of philosophy, and representatives of all the major areas. To my mind there is an over- representation of the analystic and positivistic type of thinker, but this is perhaps indicative of the character of philosophy today.
This is a very good introduction to basic problems of philosophy.
Parenthetically, the fact that this review is the first of the book posted on 'Amazon' would seem to me a small piece of evidence in support of Berlin's thesis that the mass of mankind would rather not have their own assumptions question and their own beliefs tested.

This is one of those projects that should almost never be attempted - one thinks of the sequel for Gone with the Wind for a crass example, and yet Doug Low will surprise you. Not speculation or conjecture, but a thoughtful, well developed thesis based on a wide body of relevant writings, research and analysis. If Merleau-Ponty is in your pantheon of great 20th century philosophers, this is essential reading.

An Excellent Selection for the Casual Woodworker
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1998-03-06
I have thoroughly enjoyed this title. From the clarity of the instructions to the selection of the projects, I find nothing to complain about. The premise that the average home woodworker has only a modest selection of handtools to choose from is right on. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to build usefull, attractive outdoor furniture.
