Great book for teaching student producers

I use this book in my course "News Producing" at the University of Missouri. It provides an excellent combination of practical lessons and context about the producer's role in television news. There is information about working with other players in the TV news environment, from anchors to the assignment desk to production staffers. This is especially helpful for young producers trying to navigate a world where most of their colleagues are older and more experienced than they. Sections on writing, using production elements, helping reporters with their live shots, ratings and understanding who's watching the local news are also very helpful. The book includes first-person advice from television news professionals, which really brings the textbook to life.

I bought a copy of this book when I was a student at Universite Laval in Quebec, Canada. It beats Bescherelle off the charts for conjugation help. There is NO book ANYwhere that conjugates more French verbs for you. If you are a student of French or a teacher or you just want to know EXACTLY how to conjugate EVERY verb, this is the book for you. I am now a French teacher and my students borrow my book regularly for use in class. It's the best!!

Marie-Antoinette: Correspondance Secrète
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-11
This is a faithful-to-the-original reprint of a 3-volume work published in French in 1874. It is composed primarily of letters between the comte de Mercy, the Austrian ambassador to France, and Empress Maria-Theresa and span the years from Marie-Antoinette's arrival in France as dauphine in 1770 to the Empress's death in 1780.

There are also some letters included between Marie-Antoinette and her mother but the primary emphasis is on the letters between Mercy and the Empress. They concern everything from grand-scale politics to the minutiae of the court of Versailles and are well-worth reading for anyone interested in late 18th Century French History.

I suspect, but do not know, that the reason for the paucity of letters between Marie-Antoinette and her mother is that the Austrian Archives may not have released all of them by 1874. These missing letters may be found in Evelyne Lever's 2005 work, "Marie-Antoinette, Correspondance 1770-1793," also in French, which would make an excellent supplement to the Correspondance Secrète.

This is an ABSOLUTE MUST for those interested in Morocco, or Moroccan design. This is a huge book (with over 330 pages) full of bright pictures showing very detailed designs. The book is in French, however, even if you don't know French, the pictures alone are worth owning this book. Quite a reference for anyone in design, or for those who just simply love it "MOROCCAN STYLE".

Marvel Masterworks: The Rawhide Kid Volume 2

Few silver age comic book series are as enjoyable as the Rawhide Kid. Viewed from both a story and art perspective, issues #26 to 35 of "Rawhide Kid" includes an outstanding mix of text ant illustrated tales.

Firstly, let's all say a big THANKS to Marvel for the Marvel Masterworks series. Where else can you buy 10 issues of classy art and vintage stories for only $55 us? Today, if you were to purchase mint copies of the individual issues, you would be spending a heck of alot more, and not only would you bag and board them, but you would also buy reading copies. That would be a great collecting day for anyone, but, it almost defeats the purpose if you just want to read Stan Lee comic book oaters.

Back to the Kid, volume two. This run of issues is special for a few reasons. They are, Stan Lee stories, Jack Kirby pencils, Don Heck art, Paul Reinman art, Jack Davis art, and Sol Brodsky art. Now, you're saying, Sol Brodsky art? Not only was he a premier art director, he was a darn good artist too. Issue #33 includes "There's A Shoot Out Coming" by Brodsky. Even Al Hartley gets into the Rawhide Kid too!

These volumes are sheer delight. While today's western comics are dark, instrospective tales, the Stan Lee 5 pagers are short vignettes in the life of a gunslinger. Originally, the comics were printed on pulp and had a muddly look to the art, but on glossy paper, the art shines and the new coloring truly makes these look new. Printed today for the first time, I believe they would still sell well.

This particular volume is of interest to me because of the Jack Davis art. Years ago, I had opportunity to purchase art proofs of Jack Davis art. Now, I can see the art the way it reproduces! Unlike the at of Jack Kirby, Jack Davis' version of Rawhide is fun. His postures are exaggerated, and the panels don't always look right. But, the art is fun. Villains are caricatures of themselves, and yet still threaten.

Other jewels in this volume are touches like the bottom notes "You've never read a comic like the FANTASTIC FOUR! Get your spine tingling copy today!" The text pieces, which were popular at the time, are good features in the books that made still make me pause while reading the book.

Need some more reasons to buy the book? Mark Evanier writes a killer introduction too.

The Bible On Matisse

Review Date: 2002-10-04
I noticed that this is coming back into print in November 2002, so I figured I'd write this review. If you are a fan of Matisse, you should snap up this book. It is an awesome achievement by Mr. Schneider. There is a tremendous amount of biographical data here, as well as a wealth of reproductions- both color and black and white. One caveat, though. This is definitely not for the casual reader! There is a lot of detailed analysis of the paintings included- such things as Matisse's theories on the use of color and shape; the tremendous amount of work and thought that went into each work in order to create color harmony and a balance of all the pictorial elements, etc. Mr. Schneider respects the reader, so some of this stuff can be a real challenge! But I found it very worthwhile! Matisse's paintings are deceptive, at least to the layperson. They seem soothing and simple. Well, I can promise you that after reading this wonderful book you may still find the paintings soothing, but when you realize what went into the process of creating them you will never again think of them as being simple! This is one of those rare books that opens your eyes and makes you look at something in a completely new way.Reviewer Note: Please be aware that the book I am reviewing is the over 700 page book written by Pierre Schneider, NOT the much shorter book written by Mr. Jacobus and only translated by Mr. Schneider!

Excellent first-hand account of experiences on the Trail & in Santa Fe
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-09
Matt Field, a middling actor down on his luck, sickly, rejected twice by two different women when he proposed marriage, decided in 1839 to take a trip to Santa Fe with one of the trading caravans headed to that city from Independence, Missouri. Accompanied by a few friends, he steamboated from St. Louis to Independence, where in July he joined a small (18 men) caravan and set out across the plains. Going through Council Grove on to Bent's Fort, he continued over Raton Pass after which he left the main caravan and followed a trail to Taos and then down to Santa Fe. Thoroughly enjoying his stay in Santa Fe, but fearing a winter crossing of the plains, he left the capital late in September, took the Cimarron Cutoff, and made it back to Independence by the last day in October.

Fortunately for posterity, Field kept a journal of his trip, which is included here; he was also later hired by the New Orleans Picayune to write a number of articles based on his travels and experiences (they also are included here and make up the main portion of the book). A budding poet as well as an actor, Field turned his outward-bound journal into a long epic poem (the return leg remained in typical diary form). Though his poetic skills are not very good, this poem remains a unique document in the annals of western literature. The newspaper articles are another matter; they are superbly written and fascinating to read. The articles were meant to entertain readers, and hearsay and embellishment abound, but their bases are in fact and in what Field experienced. Everything seemed to be worthy of his attention and subsequent relating, from sights along the trail to humorous anecdotes related to him by others he met along the way. There is the obligatory grizzly bear story and thunderstorm-on-the-prairie story, but also more personal items such as a funeral in Taos and a wedding in Santa Fe. The articles ran for two years in the Picayune and as they still do today must have brought much enthusiasm to their first readers. The trade along the Santa Fe Trail was in decline by 1839, and to have Field's first-hand impressions of what it was like then is remarkable. It's among the half-dozen most important original works regarding the trail and the trade and the people who were involved with both, and it's a delight to read. Highly recommended.

An Important Book for Everyone on the Planet- A Timeless Classic!
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-14
While written in 1947, this potent book is timeless and wise beyond measure; a book that would do well as important reading in all schools and in all nations, perhaps a universal class called: "Maturity 101".

At the time of publication, this book was a national and international best seller. After reading it, one will see why. It stayed in the #1 slot until the publication of the "Kinsey Report" one year later- Prof. Alfred Kinsey's, et al., block-buster science report on human sexual habits.

Overstreet gives us such gems as: ["All children, Diderot once observed, are essentially criminal. It is merely our good luck that their physical powers are still too limited to permit them to carry out their destructiveness." Had he lived today, Diderot might have expanded his remark. He might have said that all childish minds are dangerous, but particularly when those minds are housed in adult bodies; for then they have the power to put their immaturities fully and disastrously into effect."]- i.e., war mongering, wanton destruction of our shared environment, destructive relationships, selfishness in politics and business, etc. Here, begins the message of the critical need for children to be taught socialization (including sex education), care and awe of nature, love of self, family, community, etc.

"The Mature Mind" brings up many of the more contemporary ideas of universal maturing of consciousness put forth in Duane Elgin's books: "Awakening Earth", "Voluntary Simplicity", et al.

I rate "The Mature Mind" as one of the most important books in history and in these times of contentious unrest, environmental destruction, socio-economic-religious-political predation, the message about the importance of human maturation cannot be overstated.
