Still a great book about Sharks.

One of my proudest possessions is a personal letter from Jacques Cousteau which is framed and hangs on the wall of my study. Cousteau was more than just a great man and his books are a testament to his pioneering work involving so many different aspect of the sea and everything about the sea.

For many years the Shark was perceived as everything that was evil and frightening as far as the sea was concerned. No book about this splendid creature was complete without that section on Shark Attack. Not even the Lions from Africa plains or the North American Grizzly Bear got such a fearful press. Today, of course, the Shark is endangered and - suddenly!, we are all worried about the Great White and it's other equally magnificent cousins.

But take another look at this book's title. This book was fist published in 1970 and even then Jacques Cousteau referred to this creature as a "Splendid Savage." He uses those words in pretty much the same way as, say, a Victorian explorer might have described the people from a newly discovered tribe found deep in the Amazon jungle or wherever. That title is just another indication of how Cousteau's thinking was so far ahead of it's time.

The content is, therefore, relevant to the modern diver from the 21st Century. As with all the books in this series, it is a good read and I can only suggest all serious divers add a copy to their bookshelf before it finally becomes unavailable.

A work of original research and a must read .

This is an excellent piece of work, by far the most impressive one I have read on this topic in either French or English. It is thorough, scholarly, carefully written, well structured, and beautifully written (thus it would require a well qualified translator in order to keep the prose at that good level). It contains little jargon outside the precisions needed in the geographical, agronomic, cultural, or chemisty terminology used in the first chapters to speak competently on that topic.

I believe it is bound to become a major reference in its field. Despite quite a few books published over the years that have touched on one aspect or the other of opium in Asia (history, production, consumption, political and economic issues), all cited in the text and included to the book's bibliography, to my knowledge there is no other book competing with it at that level of exhaustiveness, and scholarship.

Each chapter in the first part (chapters 1-6) is highly informative and should be the ones a majority of readers (informed amateurs as well as specialists) will appreciate most. In particular, I can foresee journalists interested in these issues making a regular use of this new source. Chapters 7-9 raise the question to a more academic level; in this sense they are more debatable and they should appeal to scholars in the first instance.

All maps are original, well crafted, informative, and well sourced. Some tables are repetitive, simply presenting the same information in a different shape. The detailed index in all a reader could ask for.

A work of original research and a must read for anybody interested in Afghanistan, Burma, and opium of course: a reference for anybody interested geopolitics of illicit drugs in Asia (see other works of the author on his Web site: www.geopium.org).

I am currently in Deutschland learning Deutsch. I was fortunate to come across this book. It is A1 as a reference for Deutsch verb conjugation. There are so many Deutsch verbs which are irregular, one has to learn the correct conjugation of each verb individually. It is ideal to have a good reference book to look up any unfamiliar verb form when you are trying to speak and write good Deutsch. This book is very comprehensive, it gives you examples of the usage of these verbs in sentences and is very easy to use.

Very Interesting Historical Opinions

This book reflects on the relocation of slaves back to Africa and their resettlement in Liberia. The narratives are all by slaves, some expressing their content and others their discontent. As a Liberian, it was funny to find one of the major complaints was lack of bread, only rice and cassada (cassava as spelled in this writing), our favorite staple foods. Other aspects of life complained about were (which we consider parts of everyday life) : driver ants, palm oil, jiggers, and yes a freed slave in 1853 complains about a skin disease called craw-craw.

The two most interesting points in this book for me: One content slave pointed out that he left America because he knew in his heart there had to be somewhere on this earth where the black man could be free. Another discontent slave, who hustled his way back to America, said he would rather be a slave in America than live in Liberia without any hope.
In life there are leaders and followers, some saw an opportunity for a new beginning and others saw too much work ahead of them when leaving a country where everything was already established. Regardless of who we identify with, I am grateful to have come upon this work which provided me some insight into the history of my country.

This out of print groundbreaking anthropological account of Haiti as a tragic and revolutionary nation as told through the microcosm of the village Mireabalas is a must own, even at its exorbitant price. This perspective is unique and thorough and this book (in it's '71 edition) is extremely rare.

Review: Life is with People

I have read this book several times--as well as parts of it at least a half dozen times--and have never failed to glean an enormous amount of information about the incredible lives of Eastern European Jews before World War II. The authors (all of whom are highly trained in their respective fields) have opened up to their readers a beautiful and yet painful world which those of us who live in freedom and prosperity probably never knew existed before.

The writing is clear and precise and the reader is offered many direct quotes as well as regional aphorisms and Yiddish terms used by the Eastern European Jews to describe their friends, family and surroundings. At times I was filled with laughter, other times brought to tears by the words of those who lived in the shtetleh of Poland and Russia.

The Jews of Eastern Europe were a simple people of faith---in their God, in their little run-down communities, in their family and friends---but they also lived in a world which evoked a constant sense of fear knowing that anytime day or night they were subject to the violent whims of their Gentile neighbors. During the worst pogroms, Jews were attacked and sometimes murdered in front of family members and friends. And yet, because of the social conditions in Eastern Europe, those who witnessed the horrors of a pogrom might actually come face to face the very next day with those same Gentile attackers in the marketplace, and they were expected to act as if nothing at all had happened. We of democratic laws and justice would not fair so well in such a society; they had no such choice, for to complain was to risk one's life and bring down further destruction on their shtetl.

With few exceptions, the Jews of Eastern Europe lived and died with dignity and courage despite the sometimes horrible conditions under which they were forced to live, and this book describes this world more simply and clearly than any other I've read. For them, life truly was "With People", and it opened up my eyes to the incredible value of my own family and friends and the freedoms so richly enjoyed in this, the nation of my birth. I was deeply moved by this book and would recommend it to anyone, regardless of their national origin or religious faith. John Edward Flynt
