You thought you knew what reality is. Think again!

It is time you loose your naivety on such vital topics as time, space, and the nature of the material world. If Madonna says she's a material girl, it's obvious from costa de beauregard's work that she totally ignores what this statement implies. So be cautious next time you say: it's real. Read this book, then listen to Madonna. Quite an experience indeed!

An excellent collection

Kenneth Kraft did a great job compiling several original essays. Some of them, written by Buddhist scholars, cover an early history of Ch'an in China, the development of Japanese Zen, Zen poetry, Zen in America, and so on. Some, written by Zen masters and practitioners, offer an internal perspective on Zen, including chapters on zazen (Zen meditation), private meetings with a master, Zen Koans, and so on. The book has a broad scope and essays are very accessible. Highly recommended.

A Must Have

Review Date: 2006-06-23
This book is a must have for those who are teaching in non-western cultures. Though a number of articles, it addresses the field of language learning autonomy in non-western cultures. There has been concern that autonomy is only valid in western cultures because it is based on the western tradition of education. However, as these essays show, it may be dangerous to make this sort of cultural or ethnic generalization. Autonomy is present in all educational cultures. What may be the problem is that the approach of the teacher and the approach of the students may be different. If this is the case, then there may be some difficulty in developing autonomy in the students. I really recommend that any teacher teaching in non-western countries pick this up.

Antique University Course

Review Date: 2005-10-07
This is an antique classical course. It's main purpose is to train the student to write on par with Joseph Addison. It requires The Spectator by Joseph Addison. I found The Spectator in two volumes on Alibris, excellent condition, J. B. Lippincott Company 1890. You're to read a piece by Joseph Addison three times and then you attempt to write what you have just read. Thus it's important to find a copy of the The Spectator that doesn't have any editing by Joe Blow.

You're expected to know Latin and it is assumed that you do so. There are interpretations of the Latin at the end of each chapter but it is disruptive.

It's excellent. I highly recommend it. I also recommend the simplified Christian dialect that is the present fad and learning material from Memoria Press to start the Latin.

A pioneering scholarly work

It is difficult for me to imagine anyone reading through this work who is not a scholar of Hebrew poetry.
The work is of great historical importance as it defines as principal device of Hebrew poetry, the device of parallelism.
However refinements and qualifications of Lowth's thesis are made by more modern scholars , two of the most well- known of whom are, Robert Alter and James Kugel.

excellent reader for intermediate students
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-29
I've had intermediate college French and have studied in La Rochelle for a summer--so I'm no neophyte, but only marginally conversational. In addition to (many) other materials, this is a great resource. It's probably best to have had either 201 or 202 French before one starts with this reader because it assumes a decent, but not vast, vocabulary.

Contes et legendes has helped my reading comprehension markedly, mostly by building my vocabulary, but also with the exercies given after each tale. More advanced vocabulary is provided in the margin, but I still have to look some words up. The tales are usually interesting, and often funny--sorry for the cliche, but it does make learning rather fun.

Superb Photos ! Outstanding !

Review Date: 2006-01-29
Over 650 photos form the heart and soul of this outstanding and very rare book; taken in all the varied circumstances the Legion found themselves in, in their four hard years of bloody struggle on the Eastern Front. Word has it that the photos came from the veterans association, which has since disbanded, and the print run was small.

Tintin chases counterfeiters through the British Isles
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-25
While on a walk in the countryside Tintin sees a small plane make an emergency landing in a field. When he approaches the pilot to offer help he is shot at. Later he returns to investigate and follows a trail of counterfeit money to Scottland. Tintin is suspicious about what is going on on the Black Island. Natives say that a monster lives on the island and that those who travel there never come back. But Tintin must investigate...

Snowy explores the deadly sin of gluttony in this book: He spends the beginning of the book persistently dragging around a large bone and then a roasted chicken while Tintin scolds him. Snowy also discovers alcohol when he finds a leaky wine container in the cargo car of a train. Later Snowy drinks beer from a keg in a Scottish bar. Tintin is up to his usual quality, and fans of Snowy will especially like this one. The dog is super cute!

If you are reading this to help learn French, Tintin comics are good for reading at a French 2 level. There are many words that aren't basic vocabulary but it is still easy to follow the story because the writing and pictures tend to reinforce each other. Although there are many chase scenes and fight scenes in this one the language stays fairly interesting. Still the language here is slightly simpler than other Tintin stories, so this might be good to read near the beginning of French 2. The video allows you to hear the language and practice pronouncing.
