Despite the title ("The Stone and the Sword"), which could confuse you into thinking of King Arthur, this is indeed the French translation of Eiji Yoshikawa's "Musashi", whose English version has nearly unanimous five star reviews. The translation of the novel is in two parts, the first being this book, the second being "La parfaite lumière".

We speak Spanish and want our children to learn, so we purchased this book. The story is fun and the pictures are nice. We read it to them in Spanish, and they read it in English, as it has both languages. Our hopes are that when they become familiar with the story, they will read it in Spanish too!

Jeanne Hilary is definitely one of the most exciting young photographers out there. No one reports on the human condition with more insight. Her subjects have energy, soul, and character. Jeanne can make a yawn or a backward glance look beautiful, and she can take the mundane everyday and make it heroic. Pay attention. You'll see her name again.

Well, this is a book that shocked me a lot, just after reading his book about St. Francis. I hadn't heard of Christian Bobin before, but by now I like him. The words cannot express my idea, I just say that it helps us think, laugh and cry!

Often called one of the most beautiful (and rare) books ever printed, La prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France is a collaborative artists' book by Blaise Cendrars and Sonia Delaunay. This facsimile is a really great piece of work.

Non seulement rend t'il ce petit livre accessible aux néophytes mais il nous fait en plus pénétrer dans l'âme du mysticisme juifs en vulgarisant ce sujet très difficile avec une maitrise rarement atteinte!

The book, in french, refers to the events after the fall of Constantinople to Ottoman Turks and the efforts that had been made to reconquer it. To this matter, a marriage was arranged between princess Zoe Sophie Palaeologina, the daughter of the younger brother of the martyr Constantine Palaeologus, with Ivan III, the duc of Moscow, as it was known in that time, the appropximately small country of Russia. After this marriage Russia expanded to its natural territory, expelling from there the Mongols.
It is nice to learn how these kind of marriages were arrannging in that time, and the complexing diplomatic moves that had to be done.
It is a very interesting historical book...

This is the French text edition of an epic work by its Swedish author. Translated from Swedish into English, this beautifully written book of historical fiction was first published in 1954 and met with excellent reviews at the time. It is the second part of a four part opus, the first of which is "The Emigrants". This book, "Unto a Good Land", is followed by two additional books, "The Settlers" and "Last Letter From Home".

In the first volume, "The Emigrants", the author detailed the emigration of a Swedish family to the New World, grounding it in the reasons for the exodus of so many Swedes from their mother country in the middle of the 19th century. The focus of the first book in this four part opus is on the family, relatives, and friends of Karl Oscar Nilsson, a peasant farmer who unceasingly worked his farm, only to find that, no matter what he did, he could not progress and would continue to live on the cusp of total poverty. The focus of the first book is on their life in Sweden. Gathering up his family and friends of the family, the Nilsson family decides to take the monumental step of making a fresh start by emigrating to the new world, specifically the United States of America.

The second volume, "Unto a Good Land", focuses on the arrival of the Nilsson family and friends in the United States of America. It details their journey from New York, a journey that was to take them across the Midwest by rail, steamer, and foot to arrive in the wilds of what would one day be the State of Minnesota. It is in this wilderness that the Nilsson family and friends would homestead and struggle to make a new home. The author regales the reader with the travails this hardy group of settlers would encounter in their efforts to create by the sweat of their brow a new home in the wilderness. The early struggles of the Nilsson family to succeed in what was an unknown frontier is engagingly chronicled. I have enjoyed the first and second volumes so much that I look forward to continuing their journey with them by reading the remaining two volumes. This is a book that those who love historical fiction will greatly enjoy.

Took a while to get through this, in French, but well worth the effort. Ms. Blanche offers wonderful comparison and analysis. Would be great if translated as well!! Way to go Martine!
