Mr. David, Titular of the Raoul-Dandurand chair of strategic and diplonmatic studies, does a great job at giving a complete
overview of the international relations and, more precisely, the strategic studies. This is a great french strategy manual
for those who want to know more about strategic studies and interantional relations. Simply made and explained, this is a
great book for the beginner in this field.

the most accurate book written on this legendary army corps

Maybe you have heard of French Foreing Legion by word of mouth and unsurprisingly are willing to learn more about the most
legendary (and secret) elite army corps ever in France, this is the book you certainly will appreciate : precise description
on the history of French Foreign Legion is provided in part 1, part 2 deals with its present location, the mission and
the type of combat assigned to each "régiment". Compared to other books on the subject, only this one can retrace to you
how History is driven in every action of these men, only this one unveil so marvellously the lifestyle of these man who abandonned
their former existence to deserve an even tougher one, and Y. Debay's book will rise in you the enthusiasm he wrote his
book with for he know these men from their recruitment to their life in modern battlegrounds. I advised this book to a few
friends of mine who wanted to enroll in La Légion Etrangère : they are now enthusiastic legioneers, maybe because they knew
all about what was expected from them ( and what they expect from their new family La Légion Etrangère), certainly because
they could measure the whole meaning of total commitment (only 6% of candidates succeed throughout the recruitment test).
This book will be of great use to people interested in psychology : it deals with "total commitment" in a singular way. You'll
therefore understand better why some attorneys, some doctors, some top-managers...some simple men from all over the world
did make the Big Step and why the secrecy and legend of this closed organisation have gone throughout centuries.

This book doesn' t launch a new managementfashion nore gives a bunch of recipes for 'better management'. Philippe d'Iribarne
is a fellow-European who knows that there still are national borders (espacially in people's heads)and that one single, standard-approach
sometimes can be the fastest way down. I think this book is a must-reed for American managers who want to start a business-unit
in Europe.

This is one of the most interesting books you'll ever read. Once you start going trough it there is no stopping, you have
to get to the end of it. First time I read it, it was about 20 years ago... I am so amazed to discover that all the magic
is still there. I thought being a teenager made me see it so special. I was wrong. This is a book to cherish and keep forever.
I highly recommend it. I personally hate history, the fact that I was raised in a country where history was changed to please
the government and mostly it's leader made me strongly refuse to learn any history; I had the conviction that history is just
another tool to make people follow it's leaders... In spite it's historical content - this book makes you see the human nature
and mostly the differences between now and then; we are so fortunate to experience punishment and other control tools which
are being used to keep us from becoming as insensitive and uncaring as the personages caught in this great book. It's simply
the God Father of the book industry, but for another era and place all together.

Medievalists, Poets, Feminists, Take Note!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-07
Review Date: 2008-10-07
The three views of women announced in the title are expressed in three poems written in France, surely by men, sometime before
1328. The texts of the three poems, two in the Francien dialect of medieval Paris and one in Anglo-Norman, are included, along
with ample notes and solid English translations. These are not long poems; they are only 176 lines, 96 lines, and 149 lines
-- a few pages each. They are all three examples of the 'popular' genre of French poetry called "dit," meaning simply 'saying,'
and they are all anonymous. Most of the book in hand consists of two extended essays, the first, by Wendy Pfeffer, addressing
their literary structures and linguistic attributes, and the second, by Gloria Fiero, analyzing their historical context, examining
the degree to which they represent authentic perceptions of women in the Middle Ages, whose perceptions, and on what basis.
One of the three dits is virulently misogynist. Le Blasme des Fames can be translated 'The Vices of Women.'
Le Bien des Fames counters with 'The Virtues of Women,' and represents a defense of women that most modern feminists will find unsatisfactory, since the chief virtue of women appears to be that the Virgin Mary was one. The third dit - La Contenance des Fames, 'The Behavior of Women' - is perhaps less overtly misogynist than paternalistically condescending. Fiero's essay does a fine job of identifying whose point of view might be exemplified in each poem. Both the attitude of the Church and the general 'scientific' paradigms of the era, based on the authority of Aristotle and Galen, get their share of 'credit' for the disdain for women felt by the educated class, chiefly clerics. By contrast, Fiero suggests, the semi-literate nightly classes and the largely illiterate commoners may have held quite different notions of womanhood. It was, of course, also the age of chivalry, of hyper-idealization.
Here's a sample of Anglo-Norman French, from Les Blasmes des Fames:
Femme est huan esstace,
Le jour se muce, la nuyt est wace.
Femme est funteine desur la veie
Ke tuz receit e tuz avoie;
Femme est marchie de tele nature,
Tut tens bate e tut tens dure;
