A novice might find it difficult to grasp the contents completely without a teacher's assistance, but any serious student of music will find it a great introduction to the subject. It is a good read for anyone interested in Western music. I find it very helpful as a review when helping college students prepare for certification tests in music education or for the GRE specialty test in music. It covers a broad range of issues at a deep enough level to make it a perfect review, or introductory, resource. It would also be an excellent study guide for anyone taking college level placement or exemption tests in music theory.4544Instruction & Study4539Theory, Composition & Performance4507Music86Entertainment1000Subjects283155Books713227011General AAS4539Theory, Composition & Performance4507Music86Entertainment1000Subjects283155Books4510General4507Music86Entertainment1000Subjects283155Books713223011General AAS4507Music86Entertainment1000Subjects283155Books0536575541http://www.amazon.com/INTRODUCTION-FINITE-MATHEMATICS-John-KEMENY/dp/0536575541%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0536575541John et al KEMENYHardcover97805365755480536575541Ginn PressBook1989Ginn PressGinn PressINTRODUCTION TO FINITE MATHEMATICS3900USD$39.003750USD$37.501300005.01105365755415442001-07-29Marriage laws and PermutationsFrom game theory to the Gambler's ruin this book has classical mathematics well explained. Brower. His reflections in the interim led him "to feel that literary preoccupations need to be tempered with attention to the fundamental human concerns of Japanese court poetry." We are all the beneficiaries of this change in focus.

Japanese Court Poetry is certainly a scholarly landmark, and it does not detract from its stature to claim in the same breath that this concise, well-organized Introduction to Japanese Court Poetry has no equal as an introductory survey. One suspects that the clear, compact presentation may owe something to the fact that the book began as a series of lectures, where every word must be weighed. Miner's opening sentence succinctly defines his use of the phrase "Japanese court poetry" to mean "a historical segment (ca. 550-1500) of what Japanese themselves call waka, or Japanese poetry -- serious verse written in their own language, as opposed to Chinese, from the earliest literate times." (p.1)

He later discusses what he sees as a general contrast between the assumptions underlying Japanese poetry and Western literature. "Their common elements aside, Western literature by comparison reveals a faith in action, in ideas, and in moral responsibiity -- these are what matter. Japanese literature emphasizes human feeling and reflection in participation with much that we think is opposed to man -- especially nature and the divine. The contrast, if simplified more, is between Western faith in persuasive ideas and Japanese faith in cultivated feeling. . . Faith in human feeling -- belief in its integrity and truth -- is probably the most consistent feature of Japanese literature from earliest to contemporary times." (p. 9) Food for thought. . .and discussion.

But Miner also explains the nuts and bolts: kokoro versus kotoba, the forms of poetry (tanka, choka, sedoka, renga, etc.), "pillow-words," honkadori, the poetic diary, and so on. Chapters Three through Seven systematically survey the poetry of Hitomaro through that of major poets to 1500. Chapter Eight recaps Major Themes, followed by a Glossary, a Finding List for Poems, and an Index. A nice tight little package of fewer than 200 pages.

I highly recommend this book both for the general reader and for the student of Japanese literature. (It was Required Reading in a course on early Japanese literature which I taught for many years.) The poetry written by the Japanese imperial court between A.D. 550 and 1350 is regarded as one of the great literatures of the world. This volume introduces readers to that literature, offering at once a condensation, a reorganization, and an extension (to A.D. 1500) of "Japanese Court Poetry" (1901). It is a comprehensive treatment of taxometrics suitable for beginners. Authors are fair in their assessment of different methodologies and stick to scientific, rather than dogmatic reasoning. Bravo.Introduction to the Taxometric Method is a user-friendly, practical guide to taxometric research. Drawing from both classic and contemporary research, it provides a comprehensive introduction to the method. With helpful tools and guidance, the book is intended to teach those new to the method, as well as those already familiar with it, tips on how to conduct and evaluate taxometric investigations. The book covers a broad range of analytic techniques, describing their logic and implementation as well as what is known about their performance from systematic study. The book opens with the background material essential to understanding the research problems that the taxometric method addresses. The authors then explain the data requirements of taxometric analysis, the logic of each procedure, factors that can influence results and lead to misinterpretations, suggestions for choosing the best procedures, and methodological safeguards to prevent erroneous conclusions. Illustrative examples of each procedure and consistency test demonstrate how to perform analyses and interpret results using a variety of data sets. A checklist of conceptual and methodological issues that should be addressed in any investigation is included. The accompanying CD provides a variety of programs for performing taxometric analyses along with simulations and analyses of data sets. Introduction to the Taxometric Method is ideal for researchers and students conducting or evaluating taxometric studies in the social and behavioral sciences, especially those in clinical and personality psychology, as well as those in the physical sciences, education, biology, and beyond. The book also serves as a text for courses on this method, or as a supplement in psychological assessment, statistics, or research methods courses. Familiarity with taxometrics is not assumed.1591471427Taxometrics: Toward a New Diagnostic Scheme for Psychopathology1593852746Confirmatory Factor Analysis for Applied Research (Methodology In The Social Sciences)0805864296Introduction to Statistical Mediation Analysis (Multivariate Applications Series)0805847286New Developments in Categorical Data Analysis for the Social & Behavioral Science (Quantitative Methodology Series)0805862072Modeling Contextual Effects in Longitudinal Studies713013011General AAS491490Psychology468214Social Sciences465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713011011General AAS468214Social Sciences465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books712982011General AAS465600New & Used Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books713014011General AAS319654011Qualifying Textbooks251254011Custom Stores44258011Specialty Stores283155Books11207Research11119Psychology & Counseling10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11225Statistics11119Psychology & Counseling10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11229Testing & Measurement11119Psychology & Counseling10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11175General11119Psychology & Counseling10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books713279011General AAS11119Psychology & Counseling10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11274Methodology11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books11284Research11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books11289General11288Sociology11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books713503011General AAS11288Sociology11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books11268General11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books713494011General AAS11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1589831217http://www.amazon.com/Invention-Method-Rhetorical-Hermogenic-Greco-Roman/dp/1589831217%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D15898312171146982http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51N86NBN1GL._SL75_.jpg7550http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51N86NBN1GL._SL160_.jpg160106http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51N86NBN1GL.jpg475316et al George A. The first of these parts is known in Greek as Huresis or invention, literally finding, and listed a series of topics, with examples, that could suggest things to be said in the exposition of the subject and in support of the argument. Invention differs somewhat in each part of the speech. This treatise discusses three parts of a typical judicial or deliberative speech: the introduction, and proof. There is no explicit discussion of epilogues. The fourth book of On Invention is largely devoted to matters of style and composition. It is throughout an unusual work, differing considerably from other discussions of rhetoric both in its teaching and in its terminology.
The second treatise translated here as On Method of Forceful Speaking continues the originality of On Invention and is included because it addresses topics neglected in the first treatise. The work is by a different author and has its own distinctive terminology. There are some similarities to the Pseudo-Dionysius' art of rhetoric. The author shows no awareness of Aristotle's discussion of style or of other classic rhetoricians. There is some attempted systematization.
This volume contains the Greek text, textual apparatus, and first published English translation of two treatises on rhetoric, with introductory material and notes. Once attributed to Hermogenes of Tarsus, these treatises are now believed to be by unknown authors writing in the second or third century C.E. or later. The first treatise, entitled On Invention, is a handbook for students providing formulas to aid them in the composition of declamations on assigned themes. The second treatise, On the Method of Forcefulness, discusses prose style with special attention to figures of speech. Extensive notes interpret the often-difficult content and relate it to other writing on rhetoric. The Greek text is that of Hugo Rabe (1913).158983061XProgymnasmata: Greek Textbooks of Prose Composition and Rhetoric (Writings from the Greco-Roman World)0195312937Ancient Greek Scholarship: A Guide to Finding, Reading, and Understanding Scholia, Commentaries, Lexica, and Grammatical Treatises: From Their Beginnings ... Rather than essays on the changing direction of socialist thought the direction given by Michael Novak rather reeks of "we're all social democrats now".
Michael Novak has achieved some remarkable fame or notoriety depending on your own perspective as the leader of the Capitalism as Moral sect of conservatism in the United States. His major book, the Spirit of Democratic Capitalism, articulates his case for the morality of markets and he has been feted throught the world for his contribution.
This book articulates his reformist vision of the welfare state and in this he finds common cause with the other contributors to this slim volume. Each of the authors accept the basic view that socialism as it was practised in the Soviet Union et al has gone and that increasingly, countries throughout the world are turning to some form of capitalism. Reviewer's Note: There appear's to be a conspiracy of silence among those who are loudest in the capitalism is victorious debate about why Africa has not in general gone along the capitalist route. Indeed Zimbabwe has travelled almost totally in the opposite direction.
Another common theme between Novak and the other's is the acceptance of the need for the State. Far be it for me to question this acceptance but rather simplistically I thought that conservatives were for at least a minimal state as opposed to the more libertarian case for none at all. Perhaps I have read Novak incorrectly but he appears to be satisfied to keep the state as we know it and reform it, a stance shared b y the so-called socialist authors.
But then, for Novak, the state is an instrument of the democratically elected representatives of the people. An instrument which should use it's power to achieve certain political and social objectives. While he decries the so-called breakdown in social society and yearns for the return of stay at home mothers while the married father brings home the weekly paycheck and where there is more order and authority in the world, Novak is signifying the common cause that authoritarian conservatives like him have with the descendents of ethical socialism in Britain.
This book is more about getting policy formers to change the direction of their policies to bring about a new social order. It is about convincing people that all of this freedom that we seeem to be accruing is bad for us if we do not use it with responsibility. It is a project which hijacks liberty in the name of restoring civil society but which requires fewer choices rather than more. In this idyll which never really existed along with that wonderful concept of merrie rural englande but which conservatives want us to return. The American equivalent is no better a sort of Christian conservative equivalent of the Stepford Wives.
This book represents the jealousy and resentement felt by Conservative elites for the growing ability of everyone to exercise choice in the world where before that capacity was limited to the priviledged few. It is a blatant attempt to convince the powerful middle class voter that the only way to protect their position is to restore some order to the world. In fact the more I read books such as this the more I recall the essential Victorian society where people said one thing and did another. A society which could not talk about sex but where prostitution was rife and confined by the customers as far as they could to the ghettos of the poor.
To it's credit it is a well written book and Novak demonstrates his skill as an author and the ability to marshall his arguements to achieve a clearly defined objective. It is certainly a book that everyone should read...and BE WARNED BY.2612General3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713049011General AAS3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books16022781General16022771Political Doctrines16022621Political Science11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books16022861Socialism16022771Political Doctrines16022621Political Science11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books16022631General16022621Political Science11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books713501011General AAS16022621Political Science11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB000KGEPTQhttp://www.amazon.com/Isaac-Asimovs-Science-Fiction-Magazine/dp/B000KGEPTQ%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000KGEPTQ6019874Isaac, et al AsimovPaperbackDavis Publications, Inc.Book1977Davis Publications, Inc.Davis Publications, Inc.Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine: Vol 1, No.1; Spring 1977495USD$4.951000USD$10.000520005.011B000KGEPTQ5002007-03-28First issue - Collector's itemThis is the first issue of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, which has been popular enough to continue even today, years after Asimov's demise. To start off with a bang, this first edition included works by some of the sci-fi fields best authors of the 20th century, including Arthur C. Clarke, Gordon R. Dickson, George O. Smith, John Varley, and Asimov himself. I recall buying this around the time Star Wars came out; I was already a sci-fi buff, and that was a great time for it!1000Subjects1Arts & Photography2Biographies & Memoirs3Business & Investing4Children's Books4366Comics & Graphic Novels5Computers & Internet6Cooking, Food & Wine86Entertainment301889Gay & Lesbian10Health, Mind & Body9History48Home & Garden10777Law17Literature & Fiction13996Medicine18Mystery & Thrillers53Nonfiction290060Outdoors & Nature20Parenting & Families173507Professional & Technical21Reference22Religion & Spirituality23Romance75Science25Science Fiction & Fantasy26Sports28Teens27Travel283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books
