I will write this in norwegian since the book is printed in it.

The specialist's indispensable resource.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

As the title of the work indicates, West's compilation is a work for the classicist and ancient historian with a good knowledge of Greek. The archaic period (i.e. until c.500 B.C.E.) forms the main concentration of the content. This adds, if anything, to its value. After many years of relegation to the background through concentration on the 'Classical' period, interest on the previously rather neglected archaic literature and history is showing a revival. West here presents a full resource of the surviving material of this time, including new fragments (e.g. of Simonides and Arkhilokhos), while retaining from the earlier edition the verses of such prominent authors as Solon (580 B.C.E.?) and Theognis (600 B.C.E.?), both richly deserving the attention which earlier generations have tended - unaccountably - not to give them. The 'Classical' period (c.450 B.C.E. -) cannot reasonably be studied in isolation; a classicist should have a reasonable knowledge of the background against which this developed its literature and thought. A newcomer to this period's work will be agreeably surprised. This is a work which no student of ancient civilisation and language should be without.

Mini-sized guide laden with maxi-helpful information
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-06
The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is just wonderful; it's like a "Cliff Note" of the opera, and extremely informative and educational. I particularly like the size; these guides are not cumbersome and fit right into my shirt pocket. The ladies will find sufficient room in their pocketbooks.

The story narrative with the music examples is excellent. I prefer it to a libretto; indeed, it's a much easier way to follow the essence of the story. The essay is magnificent; very well written, not pedantic, and extremely insightful and comprehensible. I congratulate Burton Fisher for a job very well done and Amazon for making these handy, information-laden booklets available. The Opera Journeys Mini Guide Series is a wonderful contribution to opera education and opera appreciation.

My tip: acquire the entire collection because you will be in easy reach of superbly presented opera guides consisting of story analysis, principal characters in the opera, story narrative with music highlights, background, analysis, and commentary.

Superb In-Depth Description of 1930's Peking
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-17
Wonderful, evocative account of old Peking before the mass destruction by the current regime. This book reads like the wonderful Blue Guides of Europe (before Blue Guide recently changed the format and gutted so much of the information). The extent of description is amazing - the Lama Temple's rituals, for example, involving canabalism in pantomine: the monks worked themselves into a frenzy and then tore to shreds a man-like figure made of dough and filled with red liquid jam - mess everywhere!. The authors also recommended that tourists of the day go armed in the temple because of the determined attentions (ahem!) of the monks.

I used this book as a guide in the 90's while living in Hong Kong and visiting Peking - it still had great value despite all the losses (the coverage of the Forbidden City is incredible) I found many interesting out-of-the-way spots I would have missed if I'd relied on my strangely (sadly) poor Blue Guide China. In Search of Peking is one of those books (like Austin Coates' Myself a Mandarin for Hong Kong) that will really make you glad you lived (or visited) in China, despite all the modern concrete.

We had to buy the book...

After keeping this book for the six weeks the library allows, my four year old was so sad to let it go that we are buying it. It is one of those rare books that a parent won't mind reading over and over again. I thought maybe it was a little advanced for a four year old when we checked it out, but it is so rich in detail that a wide range of ages will enjoy it. Even the adults. The pictures are excellent and the thumb tabs make it easy to find the sections to review again. I think this will be a favorite for years to come. I have reserved Nicolas Harris' other books from the library and we may be back to buy those, too.

A clash of detective genres
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-25
Although not commonly heard of nowadays (in the English speaking world at least) Georges Simenon was a very prolific writer of the detective genre, most famous for his Maigret series (with well over a hundred books stretching from 1931 all the way to 1972!!). Maigret is basically a French response to detectives like Sherlock Holmes. Not as interested in physical evidence and the rational, he seeks to understand the characters behind the cases and their often tragic lives. Maigret has an aspect of humanism and warmth throughout the books, especially for those less fortunate in French society. His cases present an element of uncertainty that is natural when dealing with people and are thus much more realistic than Sherlock Holmes type stories (although less satisfying "logically").

This particular book describes Maigret's wrestling with some American gangsters that come to Paris for unknown reasons and then amongst other things, kidnap his unpleasant/pathetic colleague Lognon. The whole book follows a culture clash as the gangsters and the people Maigret talks to about the case, such as Poccho the dodgy Sicilian-born US expat, are much more direct and familiar, and are used to resisting police. There is also an element of pride as everyone tells Maigret not to bother - these aren't your French amateurs but real American gangsters who don't much about. But of course he shows them!

The Maigret novels may not be profound literature but they are extremely well written, compassionate and involving detective stories. This one is like a clash of genres with the 1920s gangster book and the Maigret empathetic-but-tough-French-detective-book coming together.

Living Green-over 30 years ago!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-20
Imagine a group of forward-thinking, do-it-yourselfers discussing a totally sustainable house. Now let these guys go out and buy an old Victorian fixer-upper in an older part of Berkeley, California in 1974 and begin to put their ideas to work. Solar & wind will take care of the power. An organic garden produces fresh produce and chickens, rabbits and fish supply the meat. Everything gets recycled and graywater is pumped out to water the ornamentals. The yard is ripped up and planted with alfalfa for the animals to eat. No cement driveway here! Rainwater would be wasted as it runs into the street, so the driveway is gravel or wood chips to help absorb rainwater. The toilet uses no water as it is a composting toilet.Energy and water is conserved in every way possible. These great ideas made up the "Integral Urban House" and it was a wonderful example of sustainability before it even came into vogue. The book is a do-it-yourself book. All the ideas are laid out and explained. There are even blueprints for some of the construction projects in the back. I love the book and use it as a springboard for ideas. Here is a listing of the Table of Contents:1.Beginnings 2. Integral Design 3.Design Processes 4.Conservation of energy 5. Conservation of water 6. Managing Organic & Inorganic Wastes 7. Growing food in urban areas 8.What plants need to grow 9. Raising plants indoors 10. Raising small stock 11. Some other animals for urban backyards 12.Solar energy 13. Managing wildlife 14. The house & the street 15. The Integral Urban neighborhood 16. Bibliography 17. Construction & working plans 18. Units of measurement 19. Index.
