The best work I've seen on the subject yet. A must read.

If you are a serious writer, do whatever you have to do to get this book; I'm serious, buy it, read it at the library, steal it, whatever you have to do, just read this book! Originally published in 1912, this classic is one of the first (and, sadly, one of the few) full-length studies of prose rhythm. William H. Gass (as well as a host of other writers) was breastfed off this book! Read it!

The 1960s had an incredibly creative influence on everything, and this anthology is a perfect example. The poets are divided between those known primarily as science fiction writers, and those known as professional poets, though there's a certain amount of overlap. English poets, particularly the (then) young Liverpool poets & their compatriots, are especially represented here: Adrian Henri, Mike Evans, Brian Patten, et al.

There's a lot of energy & enthusiasm in these pages, but it's matched by intelligence & craft. While many of the poems indeed explore outer space, the emphasis is on inner space, as might be expected -- for example, Michael Benedikt's "A Beloved Head," or D. M. Thomas' "The Head-Rape." But the emptiness of space (and inner alientation) is explored as well, as in Ruth Fainlight's "A Report," or John Fairfax's "Beyond Astronaut." And then there are quietly chilling, sobering tales, such as Asa Beveniste's "The Gardeners," or Ruth Lechtliner's "A Winter's Tale."

Whether you're more interested in poetry or in science fiction, this slim volume is a treasure. I'm not sure such a collection would be possible today ... but please don't dismiss it as nohting but a 1960s artifact! Quality remains timeless, and these poems are just as moving today as they were some 40+ years ago. Desperately in need of reprinting, although that's unlikely now -- get a used copy while you can, and immerse yourself in new worlds!

The maverick genius, Jan Christian Smuts (1870--1950)invented the words 'holism' and 'holistic' in his book, Holism and Evolution, which stresses the importance of structure and function in holistic reference-frames. The first half of the book is brilliant. He discourses on how losses obtain from analysis and how gains obtain from holistic views. Function is put as an emergent quality, a something more than a mere sum of its parts. The ideas expressed in this book had great influence on the research methods and expositions in biology and medicine and have since extended to all systems studies. From the less edited second half of his book it becomes clear that he decided to publish before he finished the editing he had so carefully begun. It merits five stars for its vast range of applications in systemic reasoning.

A little out of date. But we had a very interesting internation finance class with this book.

Very interesting book about Art Hodes, jazz piano legend. Covers Art's life in jazz from the 20's on. Anecdotal accounts of the jazz life. You'll enjoy it.

I found this book at an antique store. And if you love to cook and find new recipes, browsing used bookstores and antique shops will give you some real treasures. This books was one such treasure. Lots of terrific cooking recipes to include game--and folks bring me stuff that I don't always know how to prepare! And when I set out to cook a standing rib roast for my NY's dinner, I used the commentary in this book to help me choose the right style of cooking.

You will find the 'staples' of cooking here, but also a few other gems that you might not see other places. Last night, I cooked Italian Sausages and Spaghetti. Very simple; exceedingly wondrous. My only complaint is that the measurements are sometimes imprecise: 1 #2 1/2 can of tomatoes (lbs? some other unit?) , 3 onions (large? small? medium?) In general, though, it should not deter the confident and/or intrepid cook. Just below this recipe is an "Italian Macaroni Custard". It appears to be a savory kuchen-like dish. I'm definitely going to try it.

This book will make a wonderful addition to any cook's collection.

The authors and contributors to this book worked deep in the fine details of Houston's past. So much of it has been lost to the ages, but with Houston's Forgotten Heritage, it almost comes back to life through the fine photographs of the opulent homes and even the log cabins. It is a joy to show this book to many of my "old-timer" neighbors, who remember a building here and there, and even the old fixtures, appliances, and ways of life. We should all be grateful to the authors of this book for reminding us of our glorious past.

Living in upstate NY, the Hudson is a majestic presence flowing by on it's way to the city. I'd been to the source, and parts here and there, but this book was an amazing opportunity to travel the entire length of the river, see the sights and get to know the many characters of the river. This is one of those great books that make you curl up and escape....and wish you were right there in the canoe!
