I'm using this book for some ESOL students who are 8th graders and have a lack of prior education. I'm teaching them map skills and helping them learn about the world. The Oceans are a concept they need to learn for history and Earth Science.

This is a great book ! Ce livre remarquable captivera les Américains autant que les Français. Pour apprendre à mieux se connaître et à mieux cerner son propre système de valeurs, nous savons tous qu'il est indispensable d'arriver à porter un regard extérieur sur sa culture. Voilà précisément ce que M. Baudry nous aide à faire tout au long de ces pages.

M. Baudry comprend la culture américaine dans ses moindres détails et décrit avec finesse et esprit toutes ses subtilités. Nous, les Américains, accordons une importance primordiale à l'accomplissement des tâches (peu importe laquelle à partir du moment où elle débouche sur des résultats!). Notre culture obéit aussi à une logique contractuelle. C'est pourquoi, le rôle que les Français accordent aux relations nous déconcerte. Toutes ces particularités sont difficiles à saisir sans l'aide d'un expert en la matière.

Si vous êtes Français ou Canadiens-Français et que vous avez affaire à des Américains ou si vous êtes Américain et que vous traitez avec des Français, vous ne pouvez pas rêver d'un meilleur livre. Il vous prodiguera des conseils utiles et vous guidera dans vos relations avec tous vos interlocuteurs de cultures différentes. Ce livre vous sera toujours d'une aide précieuse.

It is still difficult and hurtful for Spanish people to get an objective, pasionless opinion on Francisco Franco. If I were to recommend a way to try and achieve that, I would suggest reading several good books on the matter, including this among them. I found it far more readable that Paul Preston's biography, and far more to the point. And, frankly speaking, in my opinion B. Bennassar is as impartial as humanly possible. I regret it that is has not been translated into English: this is a book in French. Indeed, I regret even more that it is also difficult to get hold of a Spanish edition. If you can read French or Spanish, please get it and read it.

Other books that I would reccomend on the Spanish Civil war [maybe I am wrong but I have the impression that the franquist regime as such will be a less rewarding subject for the American public] are : 1) also by B. Bennassar, "Le guerre d'Espagne et ses lendemains" [in Spain translated as "El infierno fuimos nosotros", i.e., "Hell was us"]; 2 and 3) Two compilations of short biographies of Spanish characters, men ("Las tres Españas del 36") and women ("Doves of war"); and 4) "The Collapse of the Spanish Republic, 1933-1936: Origins of the Civil War" by Stanley G. Payne (not yet read it, but also seems worth it the pain).

The English edition of this book has been out of print since 1996 and is quite difficult to find. If you speak French and are into classical music, this book is the best made of any composer and shows the highly interesting life that teh great Franz Liszt led. Profusely illustrated with previously unpublished material, this book makes an excellent addition to your library.

A fantastic account, in text and pictures, of the discoveries of French Archaeologists in Afghanistan and northern Pakistan 80 years ago. A quick read, it is full of beautiful color plates telling the story of ancient relics from the lost Greek metropolis uncovered on the border of present day Uzbekistan to the towering Buddha at Bamiyan left by the great leader Kanishka and his Kushan civilization.

Written before the destruction of the Buddhas at Bamiyan, it includes a postscript bemoaning those tragic acts, and only reached the bookstores after the military operations began in Afghanistan. The reader is left wondering "what treasures yet lie beneath the soil in this archaeoligically rich post-Taliban nation?"

If you have a sunny, shady, wet, sloped or dry location this book has plans for them all. It is useful in designing your own garden or simply use one of the many plans provided. The color photographs are extensive and include complete gardens so you can see how different plants look together. This book takes the guess work out by providing the size, color(s), bloom time and growing zones for each plant reviewed. There is also some information on annuals, bulbs and shrubs that work well in a prennial garden. There are even tips on attracting butterflies to your garden. Overall, this book is full of great ideas for any type of garden you may be planning.
