An essential book for unstanding how schools affect behavior

Michael Rutter is a psychiatrist who is a sociologist. It's a rare combination. This particular book is widely cited in the resiiency literature, yet few have read it outside of graduate courses. I knew of the basics of it as a national researcher studying how schools can prevent violence. It wasn't until a few months ago I actually read the book. I wish I had much earlier. Some folks will squawk about the book being written in 1979. It's really timeless. There are powerful lessons to understand in this book. The book sorts out the effects of schools on four domains: achievement, attendance, behavior and delinquency. Each of those domains is studied in the context of inner-city London. Through precision measurement of virtually every aspect of the school environment, Rutter and his colleagues bring us to an understanding of how the smallest of things in a school setting have a large impact, such as the number of student jobs in a building or the amount of student work hung on the walls. The book is shy on describing why these processes work in the way I would like, and I think it's important to turn to the work of people like G.Roy Mayer or Beth Sulzer-Azaroff (Lasting Change)to get a careful understanding of why the processes work. In the age when people are concerned about children shooting others in schools, I think this book is a fundamental book to understand what we must do.

Faithful Descendants of Wing Chun
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-14
What is Wing Chun? Application or forms. Can all of Wing Chun be learned from Chi Sao? Perhaps. Is a punch a strike or a block? Yes. Are forms a modern addition to Wing Chun? Yes. Are all teachers alike? No. Do all teachers emphasize the same things? No. Do all teachers have the same experiences? No. If you want to learn to be the best fighter, period, find the best teachers, who are fighters. Form follows function. Application is everything, what you call it has little to do with anything. John Beall deserves his place next to the best in Wing Chun or any other Martial Arts as a world class teacher. Xiong Jiang Joh Tzu

This book positively affected the way I deal with life

I read this book as a young man and dellighted to find I can now get another copy to replace my long lost volume. The book gives very clear explanations of game theory, zero-sum and non-zero sum, game trees and related subjects. It then goes on to weave a philosophy of civilized communication based on the mathematics.

The style is clear and pleasant to read, and what ought to be a dry subject is becomes a pleasant walk through a garden of interesting concepts.

I look forward to reading it again after many years.

As a devoted 1000 island cottager, I was particularly impressed by the detail that the author included. While I have boated by many of the islands myself, I found that I really knew very little about them until I read this book. A true find for those who enjoy a colorful rendition of the local history.

Simply the best Table Top Minature Game Out There
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-26
Brilliantly simple concept and realistic at the same time.

The game is very well developed and the system works very well without having complex tables to look up. After a while and you can play the game without having to look up a single thing.

Great for historical context as well, armchair generals will gain a new understanding of military units and hardware. The game is well researched in this area and the battle books and internet support will bring you off the beaten path for World War 2. They even have armies for Finland, Hungary and Romanina. As a Military History enthusiast I find that this game and my interests compliment each other very well.

This book contains the core rules and missions, good for any time period (the game itself is split between Early War 1939-1941, Mid War 1942-1943 and Late War 1944 - 1945). But to play you will need an Army Book and a miniature army, a playing surface and an opponent.

After my introduction to this game I haven't played another minature game and even sold off my armies from other systems.

Comments on the "uniformity of attitude" among O'Connor critics -- suggests that they focus, instead, on characters' atonement..

Giannone notes a "uniformity of attitude" among critics and suggests that their focus on seeking "the source of sin" in O'Connor's characters "cramps debate." Suggests that critics should, instead, focus on how her sinners "atone" for their sins.

Examines the empowering and "joyous aspects of O'Connor's fiction" and contends that it illustrates how her writings may be viewed as a "work of intimacy and ennobled humanity." Offers careful and detailed explications of virtually all of O'Connor's fiction as reflecting her own overlooked "great tenderness of spirit" and "controlled abandonment to love."

Reader's who find this work useful will want to track-down Giannone's, Flannery O'Connor: Hermit Novelist. Urbana and Chicago: U of Illinois Press, 2000 which focuses on O'Connor's themes of the desert life, ascetic spirituality and self-denial. Frequently cited, he has also written more than a dozen other essays and articles on O'Connor in a variety of other citical anthologies and journals, including: The Flannery O'Connor Bulletin, Studies in Short Fiction, Thought, Religion & Literature, Christianity and Literature, and Literature and Belief.

Original, even radical--and also convincing
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-22
This book is a radical reinterpretation of the role of certain types of voluntary associations in American civil society. It first reviews the history of fraternal orders and secret societies in the 19th century and then expands its focus to other, related types of voluntary organization. Overall, I found it a convincing and eye-opening account of the roles of self-interest and organizational competition in the non-profit sector. The author makes some claims about the desirability of non-profits that you may not agree with, but he at least sheds revealing new light on a subject otherwise treated with kid gloves.

This is a very important work. The author was an English speaking newspaper reporter in the US on 12-7-41. In 1945, he observed the fire bombing of Tokyo. He describes the terrifying results in very straightforward (newspaper) prose. Anyone who wants to fully understand WW2 must read this work.

Are you wondering if your junk may just be a treasure? If you are this is a really good starter book to check on some of those pieces.
The author gives you over sixteen categories such as, "Country Furniture," and "Pottery and Porcelain."
In these she shows some pictures and gives detailed explanation of other pieces to help you identify an object that maybe of value.
Although this is an older book, it is very well done, easy to read and quite informative. A great help for the beginning treasure hunter.
