A wonderful collection of interviews

I read the English-translation of _Ethique et Infini_ before working with the original French. Either way, this collection of interviews clearly and very conversationally introduces the life and works of Emmanuel Levinas, one of the most important thinkers and writers of the 20th century.

A JOURNEY TROUGH FINK
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-09
This book examinates Eugen Fink's Philosophy from the phenomenological studies with Husserl and Heidegger till the last years of his life. The Focus is on the first phenomenological steps about the absolute, the descriptions of time, space and world. This becomes, through the connexion of the problem of the imagination (representation) and the reduction the central theme of his collabboration to the sixth Descartes' Meditation with Edmund Husserl. To connect this last theme with the development of his proper philosophy as a cosmology is the last step: this happens by the means of the relation between "Spiel" (game) and imagination, which is the phenomenological reduction. In this collection of essays by Tengelyi, Richir, Sebbah, Waldenfels, KErckhofen, Bruzina, Depraz, Mouille, Besnier, Norr, San Martin, Vandevelde, Biemel, Meitinger, Leibovich, Sepp, Dastur and Ruggenini, the reader has the possibility to look trough Finks philosophy from several points of view.

Aeschylus and the sacred Athenian concept of justice

The Orestia trilogy is the tragic story of the awesome responsibility of a blood debt. In the first play, "Agamemnon," the title character returns victoriously from Troy to be murdered by his wife, Clytemnestra, who having sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia so that a fair wind would blow the Achean army to Troy. In the middle play, "The Choephori" ("The Libation Bearers"), Orestes comes to Argos to avenge his father by killing his mother. After doing the bloody deed, Orestes is afflicted by madness and flees in terror from the Furies, the hideous spirits who hunt down and punish murderers. Thus the stage is set for "The Eumenides," the final play in the trilogy.

"The Eumenides" begins a few days after the end of the previous play, with Orestes seeking refuge at the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. In a most unusual move for a Greek tragedy, the action then jumps ahead several years when Orestes, after years of wandering as a tormented outcast, arrives at Athens and throws himself on the mercy of the godess Athena. The Furies arrive, hot upon his heels, and demand he be punished for his act of matricide. However, Orestes insists that since he acted according to the dictates of Apollo, he is guiltless of the crime. This is a shocking declaration, especially for someone from the accursed house of Atreus. Athena convenes a special court to hear the case against Orestes, but they are unable to reach a verdict, leaving it to the goddess to decide his fate.

Ultimately, the Orestia is a celebration of the Athenian civilization that had created a democratic government and a system of trial by jury. That such a system could be perverted might be true, as the case of Socrates strongly suggests, but Aeschylus is comparing the system to the past to draw a strong distinction between vengeance and justice. The Orestia has great importance because of this theme, and not simply because it is the only surviving example of a Greek tragic trilogy. The climax of "The Eumenides" is rather strange for a Greek tragedy, since it ends on an exalted note of reconciliation and optimism. This is symbolized most by the transformation of the Furies into the Eumenides ("kindly ones"). But ultimately it is the Athenian legal system, where a new type of justice is tempered by mercy, that is being glorified in this triology. The tragic story of Orestes is simply the tale Aeschylus chooses to teach his lesson.

I used this atlas on a rock climbing tour through Europe I completed one year ago.

I rented a vehicle in Paris and put on at least 2000km in 14 days.

I planned my route from Paris to Amsterdam to Berlin then on to Vienna Zurich Bern Milan Monaco Cannes and back to Paris.

The atlas is very accurate even down to sideroads in the countryside of Italy.

I was even able to plot the location and route to my hotels.

You may wish to supplement the atlas with the online version of the map which has details down to the block including direction of traffic.

(Direct Comment From Steve Brown of Key Life)
I just started reading your book and I love the dynamite cover (thanks for sending it)... and what is within the cover is even better than that. It is a convicting book because it's true and doesn't compromise on sin. And it is a freeing and wonderful book because it doesn't compromise on grace.

May your tribe increase!

Just stopped and prayed for you with thankfulness for you.

Bless,

Steve

Beautifully illustrated with full-color photography throughout, The Everglades introduces young readers to the treasures of the Everglades ecosystem, from its alligators to its rare flowers, reptilian and amphibian inhabitants shaded green or brown, bears, raccoons, panthers, and much more. Fun facts abound in this picturebook: "Raccoons have a better sense of touch in their front paws than any other meat-eating animal. They use their sensitive paws to search for crabs, crayfish, clams, frogs, and snails in shallow water. When early settlers saw the animals splashing on the edge of marshes they wrongly thought they were washing their food." Highly recommended for children's collections in both school and public libraries.

Mr. McCord was my grandfather's best friend throughout life, so his books were always around. Every Time I Climb a Tree has been my favorite of his children's poetry. His poetry creates a child's experience of life. "The Pickety Fence" and "Pen and Pencil" as well as the ladybug poem are wonderful.

An excellent resource for the serious historian and the casual collector alike, this remarkable digitized manuscript provides fully searchable text in both Latin and English. I was hoping for the Chauncey Leake translation, but who can argue with the "first English text of 1653!" PDF format offers intuitive navigation, and I can't say enough good things about the copy and paste-able text which made paper-writing a sheer delight. Original diagrams as well as the full Latin and English texts are printable. A treasure!
