Henri Goursau is my cousin, so I'm biased. In addition to being my cousin, however, he's an engineer for Air France in Toulouse, and has worked in the aerospace arena for years. I've found that his dictionaries - generally compilations of current technical/aerospace/engineering terms translated from French to English or English to French - are an exceptional aid for anyone working in international technology. For example, if you need a French term for solar dynamic power technology, you'll find it. I haven't seen anything like his dictionaries in the U.S. market, and am truly pleased to see that they are part of Amazon.com's inventory

A beautiful gem

It is a pity that this small book does not have (at least in Amazon) an English translation. It is really a small masterpiece of imaginative writing, rooted in Classical Greek literature. It is a tale of the initiation of a small girl who lives in one of the very Ancient tribes of pre-classical Greece. In the savage ritual of her tribe, in order to advance to womanhood, Diotime has to have her first fight against lions. Then it is time for her to get a husband, and along comes a young tribal chief, a sailor with no experience in the travails of landed life. He too must go through an initiation with lions in order to win the beautiful Diotime. They have to travel then with an old wise man, aboard his old ox, to look for the supreme lion, to confront and defeat him. The imagined world of very Ancient Greece is wonderfully depicted, and the story is infused with savagery and humanity. Less than a novel, it is almost a short story, but a very powerful one. Very recommended.

We brought this book with us to South Africa, and it was extremely helpful. Lots of photos, driving directions (which may be dated, due to ongoing construction and the transient nature of certain dirt roads), intelligent evaluations of the myriad dive sites, and detailed descriptions of local marine life.

Fortunately, we purchased it before we arrived there, as there was nothing similar available on the local bookshelves.

Plenty of kids' books cover life underwater - but how many follow a scientist in his explorations in a research sub? A 'you are there' atmosphere for grades 3-5 is created in an engaging picture book which pairs color photos throughout with an account of scientist Rich Luz, whose explorations have changed the nature of deep sea science. An excellent, eye-catching title, Diving to a Deep-Sea Volcano deserves a space on library display shelves.

Good book for students of Italian
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-23
This book, written in Italian, is based on a vocabulary of about 1200 words (Level B). Difficult words are explained in simple Italian (no English translations), and throughout the book you will find many drawings of animals, objects or situations that provide additional help in understanding the story.

The story tells the life of a Catholic priest in a small Italian village just after the war. He has to reconcile the political views and rules of the city government with the social needs of his congregation--and he does so in a sometimes humorous, sometimes pathetic, way. Some of the problems and solutions are quite bizarre but give interesting insight into a different culture.

Other Italian books for advanced beginners are "Ti ho sposato per allegria" by Natalia Ginzburg, "Mio marito" by Dacia Maraini, "Veleno a colazione" by Tiziana Merani (with CD), "La casa sulla scogliera" by Cinzia Medaglia (with CD), and "Delitto in piazza del campo" by Maria Luisa Banfi (with CD).

A wonderful book on wood gilding
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-11
Wood gilding reached its splendour in France, as proved by so many examples we can still enjoy today: Frames, furnitures, sconces, chandelliers, architectural elements and so many gilt objects still in Versailles and all over French museums, châteaux, churches and galleries. Mr Perrault shares his experience as restorator in Château de Versailles, through a comprehensive book on the art of gilding, providing useful information in order to choose the proper materials and techniques. The book is intended for professionals interested not just in gilding, but in preserving both ancient, historical techniques, as well as valuable antiques and antiquities, whose restoration demands the use of only the very best materials. A final list of materials and suppliers is provided, like a XVII century store I had the opportunity to visit while in Paris, and where authentic (historic) materials can be purchased for fine restorations.
