This is great either for the pictures or heavy-duty learning. The contributors are a pack of the finest scholars on Christian history, and the outlook is global. The history of Eastern Orthodox, Coptic, other churches of Africa, Asia, etc. all get decent coverage. And the book is a stimulus for Christians of all these backgrounds to appreciate and learn from each other. It would be good as a Christmas present.

Very moving stories and a great publishing house

Dickens' Christmas Books might be some of his most overlooked works, except for, of course, "A Christmas Carol." But in these stories he has captured the season's spirits of reflection and faith better than any other work I've read. "A Christmas Carol" is an acknowledged masterpiece; "The Chimes" and "The Battle of Life" are particularly moving as well. Four of these five stories bring me to tears by their ends.

I started in 1991 to read one story per year in the published sequence, (for Christmas 2000, I'm reading The Haunted Man again) and this has made December and its holidays more enjoyable and meaningful for me. I hope to continue the cycle and look forward to reading "this year's Christmas story" aloud to my family as my kids grow up.

Oxford Press/World's Classics publishes excellent quality paperbacks, and they do justice here to Dickens' powerful works. I highly recommend this work (and especially this publisher) to anyone; if you're looking for "A Christmas Carol", get this volume of all the Christmas Stories and enjoy even more of Dickens' masterful ability to weave the human condition into such moving short stories.

CAREFULLY EXAMINES THE ESSENCE AND EVOLUTION OF OUR CHURCH'S MAJOR DOCUMENT ON HUMAN LIFE IN THE MODERN WORLD
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-25
Written by a priest professor at the Gregorian Institute in Rome, a scholarly Jesuit priest renowned for his academic abilities, the book presents the genesis and meaning of our Church's most important social document of our time, a document now ignored at our peril as a species and a spirit.

Gaudium et Spes pronounces strongly our Church's and our Faith's position on matters such as war and peace, human rights, economics, international relations and so much more that needs to be addressed prophetically as a Church now more than other. In fact in conjunction with other official documents and pronouncements of our Church, we find ourselves as practicing Catholics unable to support in any way directly or indirectly the Iraqi invasion and its continued immoral, indefensible, illegal engagement.

The authoritative Reverend Father Tanner comprehensively reveals the roots of this document and its implications today. He also explores another document regarding the mass media. This volume, admirably published by that great and Catholic printing house, the Paulist Press, deserves a place in every Catholic library and household, and time in every Catholic hand as we pray about our mission in the modern world and our actions and words among other persons.

I purchased and read "Classic New Hampshire" by Linda Landry because my son was the chef she wrote about in Chapter 7, Canterbury Shaker Village. Her account of Leo and the reataurant is accutate and brought back fond memories of our visit to the village and the Friday evening meal. Our family is very proud of him and thank Ms Landry for putting him in this book.

Climate Change and American Foreign Policy is an important new book. It is the first book to examine the actors, institutions, and ideas shaping U.S. policy on climate change (global warming). The contributors come from across the geographic and ideological spectrums, enhancing this book's legitimacy and giving readers different perspectives on this critical topic. The book begins by introducing the issue of climate change in the context of U.S. foreign policy, before critically evaluating U.S. policies and actions. It then analyzes the domestic and international politics of U.S. climate change policy, covering such issues as science, the presidency and Congress, non-governmental organizations, diplomacy, and the international negotiations leading to the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol. The book concludes by looking at the role of international norms in shaping U.S. climate change policy.

This book is a valuable new resource for all those interested in global environmental issues, particularly climate change. It is essential reading for policy makers and environmental activists, and it will be an important text for courses in global environmental politics, environmental policy studies, American foreign policy, and international relations.

Before I bought this book, I went through few other books in the library like "Organic Neuropsychiatry" by William Lishman, American Psychiatric press of Neuropsychiatry by Stuart C. Yudofsky, Fundamentals of Clinical Neuropsychiatry by Michael Taylor, etc. They were too elaborate. I found this book more clinically oriented and more practical to use in clinical setting. I found it very useful in my rotation in psychiatry.

I am a private Equine veterinarian whom has been actively involved in Equine practice since I graduated in 1986. I have gone through this book in various places as I have not been able to own one for some unknown reason and my first impression of it was it is a must for every Equine Veterinarian. It contains alot of valuble information. Now thanks to the Distance Learning Programme in Equine Surgery, conducted by the Post-Graduate Foundation, University of Sdyney under Dr.Nick Kannegieter, I was able to get this book as it comes highly recommended in this programme.

Christian biography to inspire and inform your own walk

A Cloud of Witnesses: Calvinistic Baptists in the 18th Century is a slim volume of less than 100 pages by Michael Haykin, a man full of conviction, humility, and piety. Dr. Haykin provides 5-8 page biographies of ten Baptists from the 18th century, many of them being little-known. While Abraham Booth (chapter 4) and John Ryland (chapter 5) are recognizable names, few people have heard the names of Coxe Feary (chapter 7), Mrs. Anne Dutton (chapter 3), and Hercules Collins (chapter 1).

For every Matthew Henry and John Bunyan of the period, countless Baptist pastors labored faithfully among their flocks with scant ability to get noticed by future historians. Haykin writes:

"Such great names inspire, but it is the churches themselves that challenge us most. Each was a united, spiritual family. Pastors were more concerned to find spiritual satisfaction among their own people than to establish reputations in the evangelical world."

This book brings quick knowledge of these folks, and does so in a way that reveals some of their personal failings. For example, Haykin writes about John Thomas: "His friends, like Carey and Andrew Fuller, noted that his character had a number of glaring faults - he was prone to extreme mood swings, was sometimes easily angered, had little money-sense, an was given to impatience." (53) And yet, God used such men as Thomas in powerful missionary service, imperfect though he was.

This volume inspired me in my own Christian walk and ministry.
