"Bonaparte" was the first of a two part series of illustrated children's books on the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. "Bonaparte" follows Napoleon's life from childhood until he crowned himself Emperor in 1803. The second volume "Napoleon" follows Napoleon up to his exile on St. Helene. These two volumes are highly sought after by book collectors. I have seen these books valued anywhere from $200-1,200. The reason they are so coveted are because of the wonderful pen and ink illustrations by Jacques Onfroy de Breville (JOB). He is one of the finest French illustrators of the Belle Epoque period.

For those of us who find it difficult to rationalize paying so much for an old French children's book, we are fortunate that the French publishing company, Editions Atlantica decided to republish these volumes in the late 1990's. These volumes can both be purchased from Amazon's French site for approximately $25 each. Using the French Amazon site is relatively easy to do. Of further note, the British publisher Ken Trotman LTD has also recently republished another JOB book on the life of Prince Murat.

Finally, A Valuable Text Available to Astrologers
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-15
This valuable 1029 C.E. Arabic text was first translated by R. Ramsay Wright and published in 1934. For the most part this text hasn't been available to astrologers since the translation was typewritten and limited to a print run of 100 copies. Only those fortunate enough to find a copy in a university library had access to the translation.

This is all changed with the Astrology Classics edition of Al Biruni. David Roell of Astrology Classics has taken the astrological part of the lengthy translation and typeset it in a modern easy-to-read font with many clearly set tables, and published it in a a very affordable paperback edition.

For astrologers perhaps the most interesting notations in the text are the comparisons between the Arabic and Hindu views of astrological principles. This is invaluable in tracing the movement from Hellenistic astrology to India to the later Arabic writers.

My only complaint about this edition is that the original translation contained some interesting and pertinent information on the lunar mansions which is not included here. The lunar mansion material was located in an astronomical section of the text apart from the core astrological concepts, and perhaps that's why it was missed. Perhaps this material will be included in a later Astrology Classics edition of Al Biruni.

This edition of Al Biruni is a must purchase for any astrologer who wants to have a complete historical picture of the development of astrology up to and through the Arabic period. Plus there are many descriptions of techniques pertinent to modern astrological practice. For the low price there's no reason all astrologers shouldn't have this book in their library.

The only book about EVERYTHING IN LIFE!

This unfinished work by Gustave Flaubert was meant to be a manifesto against what he called the "French stupidity". The book was so ambitious that Flaubert had to immerse himself in different disciplines, all totally new and unknown for him such as agriculture and chemistry. Unfortunately he died before completing this magnificent book.

Bouvard and Pécuchet are a pair of copiers that meet each other by chance and soon become friends. One day, they receive an unexpected inheritance which allows them to finally pursue their dream: to write a huge book about every subject in the world; chemistry, biology, agriculture, politics, gymnastics and so on. They also want to discover the mysteries of love, magic, religion and education. Obviously this ambitious project ends as a disaster and Bouvard and Pecuchet decide to go back to the copying business and forget all about their unrealizable great project.

The author of this book is Arturo Valenzuela, not Juan J. Linz and Alfred Stepan as listed. They were the authors/editors of other books in the Breakdown of Democratic Regime series, but this one belongs to Valenzuela.

A superbly documented work of architectural triumph
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-08
In Building A Masterpiece: Milwaukee Art Museum, Franz Schulze (architectural historian, art critic, and professor emeritus at Lake Forest College, Illinois) presents a superbly documented work of architectural triumph as he showcases the world-class Milwaukee Art Museum designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava which joins the original building by Eero Saarinen. Dramatic photography illustrates and documents the new museum structure and enhance Schulze's informative essay as part of an illustrated retrospective of Calatrava's architectural career. Also included are highlights of the museum's encyclopedic collection with each color plate being accompanied by a brief essay of its own. Building A Masterpiece is a welcome and impressive addition to any professional or academic architectural studies reference collection.

Understanding the Complexity of Business
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-19
Business in Action is an overview of the many areas of business. This book is highly illustrated, with lots of pictures, graphs, and internet connections. Definitions are listed as margin notes in Blue to highlight the text on that subject. The pace of the book is quick with a lot of information compressed into a few paragraphs, with the occasional commentary. Longer essays are in the back of each chapter, with more websites then you could vist in a day.

In depth history and current view of Cajun and Creole music

Exceptional history and current description of Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco music. Will be appreciated both by tourists new to Louisiana culture as well as by serious connoiseurs of folk music and traditions and of French language. Barry Jean Ancelet is both a distinguished professor at the University of Louisiana (Lafayette), as well as being a Cajun "Garrison Keillor" (of Prairie Home Companion fame).
