This is THE book I recommend to my graduate fibers students. The ideas presented are both stimulating and timeless. All of the photos provide a jump point for individual exploration on a theme or concept. The range of presentation never fails to stimulate the most jaded of minds.

I refer to my copy all the time

This is a great collection of references for individuals seriously interested in Madagascar. Topics covered are diverse, ranging from Madagascar's unique extant flora and fauna to its paleoecology. I definitely recomend this book.

Some articles are in English, some in French - all articles have abstracts in both languages.

Be forewarned that this collection is not formatted like Battistini & Richard-Vindard 1972. It is less of a book, per se, and more a collection of about 50 articles- like an academic journal or conference proceedings. Not all aspects of Madagascar's biogeography are covered. Rather, this collection is representative of the vein of recent biogeographical research in Madagascar.

Excellent introductory book on the Mississippi

I thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating book about the Mississippi river. Although it's written for schoolkids, as an adult I found it covered the material in an interesting and enjoyable way. Not too detailed and not too general, and, other than the "I am Old Man River" big, not at all patronizing. I recommend this book for anyone who cares about this country and the river that has contributed so greatly to the development of its interior.

A study of the current biological bases of the human behavior
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-18
A study of the current biological bases of the human behavior shows why and how this one is entirely dominated by the value judgments and an unsuited semantics.

Henri Laborit tries, starting from contemporary biological knowledge, to release a methodology being able to be used as framework with a science of action.

Molecular physics to sociology and the political economy are all dependent to each other and the role of the Modern Man is to search for these structures.

A Classic
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-10
Black Metropolis is perhaps the founding document of African-American studies, a classic work of sociology that still resonates today. It is a paradigmatic expression of the Chicago School of sociology, however, a school that today stands in some disrepute, at least in some circles. Indirectly, it was the target of James Baldwin's famous attack on Richard Wright in his essay, Everybody's Protest Novel. The claim of the criticism has been that the Chicago School, due to its insistance upon using a "scientific approach", merely reproduces the very terms under which African-Americans have been oppressed--a claim that has proceeded under the warrant of European intellectuals such as Theodor Adorno. Still, Black Metropolis is a landmark study, and, unfortunately, many if not most of its observations and conclusions remain true today, and in fact it could be argued that conditions in the Black Belt of Chicago have gotten worse, not better, since 1945, the year of Black Metropolis' publication--which lends a certain credence to the criticisms mentioned above, though perhaps it should be qualified by saying that they are not so much criticisms of the Chicago School as they are criticisms of American society. Since then, as we know, we have witnessed a great shift in American public opinion away from what some consider to be the excesses of those days; so much so, in fact, that the work of Black Metropolis may again be regarded as a profoundly useful book. Embodying American liberalism as it does--which counted as a grave sin thirty years ago--Black Metropolis may possibly be due for a fresh look.

one of most interesting book about Fischer.
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 19 total.

I have 4 or 5 books about Fischer, but this one is different. It shows Fischer, the person. Seven contributors recalled their personal contacts with Fischer. Their encounters were first-hand, so their stories are truer. There are no deep chess analyses in this book, however they are the important games during Fischer's career. This is no problem, because I can find the analyses in other books or magazines, or even from chess programs. The interviews, stories, experience, observation that the authors shared enlighten me many points about Fischer. He is incredible, demanding bunch of money to play the championship with Spassky; then rejecting more money when having to defend his title. He turned down large sum of money when asked to write a book about the match. How could he rack up long strings of wins without allowing a single draw along? And these games were against the GMs. This book also has many good pictures along his exciting career. A nice article written by Unzicker near the end showed how fairly Fischer treated chess-fellows. This book could a short historical document illustrating the rise and fall of a chess titan.
