Réaliste et émouvant
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-07

This is one of my favorite stories. It details the trip of a group of brothel prostitues on holiday for the first communion of the Madam's niece. In the course of the story, it highlights both the virtues of the prostitutes and the corrupt morals of the general public, thus exposing the hypocrisy of burgeoisie society. Pick it up in French if you are able, there is wonderful slang and interesting nuances that you can't get from the English version.

Les travailleurs peuvent réellement changer le monde
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-24

I know what that reviewer means by the rubber band holding this book together. I'm not quite to that point, even though it has had hard use since 1965. It is a wonderful compendium of the lives of the great poets. I imagine it will remain in print for a long time.

I'd read this book if I had to crack a code to do it

My copy (found in a used book store in Boston next to an amazing French Vietnamese restaurant) was so torn and tattered I had to hold it together with rubber bands. In the past, reading bios of my favorite authors was like finding your dear old uncle was a pediphile. These stories focused on the amazing creativity formed by the lives of extraordinary people. I looked for years for a better used copy - no one sells them. This book is the last thing to go before you get evicted!

I've surfed just about every website on Hawaii & have gotten very little information. This book seems to cover all the bases. I wish I had the book when I first went to the Big Island 7 years ago. You can bet there are alot of places I won't miss this time around.

A most excellent adventure

If you have even an ounce of adventurers blood in you, this book will guide you to some fabulous off the beatin' track adventures. I traveled to Hawaii with my 9 year old son with the hope of giving him some memorable adventures. With the help of this book, we found mile long lava tubes (caves), flowing lava, rainforest hikes, deserted beaches and beautiful snorkling, and virtually all of it was free. All we had to provide was the willingness to explore. The book is well written, with accurate information and delightful humor. They even have a web site for updates. In my opinion, the authors have set a benchmark that few others guides will achieve. We can't wait to return.

Creepy, intelligent & NOT like anything else ever
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-14
I can sum up this book by saying that it's as if you took a twenty something year old guy off the streets, crammed his head with about a thousand literary references from like recent poetry to plays in ancient german and Italian, then had him sit down to a typewriter and tell an extraordinary story about becoming an opium addict in 21st century america. While checking out books about heroin, I came across this title in my local bookstore. The title stuck in my mind, and by the next night I found myself ordering it here online. When I got it I expected to read a couple chapters a day but wound up reading the whole thing in one wack. While this book is kind of hard reading at the beginning (most because the author writes most of the book in this like street style of talking), it doesn't take long to get sucked into the writer's mind and the story and find yourself like halfway through the thing before you even know it. Told in first person, it chronicles the life of one like lonely street kid who's super bright and follows as he becomes a teenage alcoholic and then an opium addict in his twenties. Most people I tell this to always mention trainspotting and ask if it's like that. I tell them no, it's not like trainspotting at all... it's shorter, much more intelligent, much more readable, it's totally focused on an intividual mind, and it's one of the strangest tales of like modern literature (for its style, its subject matter, and the fact that the actual plot of the book follows a book from the 1800s called Confessions of the English Opium Eaters. This might be the most readable "intellectual" books I've ever read, as it really does challenge the mind and stretch your grasp on the English language and your familiarity with literature references in general. Check it out, and you won't be sorry you did.

The unbearable likeness of being - in a drug way
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-20
While I've never messed with drugs myself, reading books like this one can really see why a person would yield to them. Mic, the narrator, is a character that you feel is constantly looking for something with real meaning in this world, finding it, then losing it. And with the perpetual losses, as he puts it, he feels he has no choice when he suddenly discovers a way of "charming away those phantom bogeys that beset me." Since the very first part of this book (the "prelude") the sense of loss leaps out at you. While it's subtle at first, talking about parents and growing up in a neighborhood where he has no friends, Mic gradually makes his way through "teenhood" and into adulthood by a constant repetition of gains, losses and escapes (chemical escapes from the pain of the losses). Not to spoil the end, but the reader does get a feeling of hope as he/she finishes up the book. And it's not so much a hope that is black and white (like Mic finally has some great epiphany - nothing cheesy like that), but instead it's more a sense that Mic, through all he's written on the page, has found a way of dealing with the crushing disappointments in life, rather then finding a way to avoid them. This whole aspect of the book is summed up perfectly in a single exchange of dialogue near the end, where Mic is talking to a friend you know he's about to lose. "Mic, do you always get what you want?" "Yes, I do... But I never get to keep it."

My professor intended this book to be a reference for the microbiology course he taught. I personally found the book to be so interesting and well done that I just dived right into it, and still find more new things each time I crack it open. As a dual Biochemistry and Microbiology major, this book is going on my reference shelf.

This book is both fascinating and broad enough to be reliable as a reference. Can be picked up and flicked through or read topically. Rivals Madigan et al. Excellent illustrations and on the right level for undergrads.

you own at least three of Denise Duhamel's collections! No words can really describe the ride through this book--the swings, the cobblestones, the banana peels where you least expect them. In fact, I'd change my headline to "Don't tell me you love life unless...

This book is full of the intimate delicious Duhamel at her best.

Funny, whimsical, a great read!

Denise Duhamel's Mille et Un Sentiments is a fantastically entertaining read on the airplane, in the subway, or wherever you feel the need to escape into her whimsical collection of utterances. This long list poem is hilarious, moving, shocking in turn - Duhamels' sometimes playful, sometimes intimate list thrills and delights. Imagistic flashes ("510. I feel the slippery cards in a tarot deck-my whole reading is sky blue, completely blank.") vie with outrageous confessions, and self-awareness flirts with self-mockery - like the tabloid-speak of "86. I feel my publicist doesn't really want you to know the real me." This slim collection is a great introduction to Duhamel's work and a must for fans.

We've owned a copy of this book for many years and use it constantly. In particular, we love the recipies for scones and for pancakes. The book was revised since we got our old copy (formerly called just "Muffins"), but as far I can tell, most of the changes are visual and don't affect the recipies (for example, some art work was removed). They should put it out in hard-cover.

A handy and well loved resource!

I'm purchasing my second copy of this book - the first is well worn due to repeated useage. Whether you're interested in wholesome eating using ingredients such as wheat flours and honey, or if you're just looking for great muffins, nut breads, etc., this book covers it all. I've received rave reviews of my Banana Bread and all of my muffins thanks to this book. The authors provide a 'Quick Mix' recipe for ease in making recipes often. You'll find recipes for everything from pancakes, popovers, coffee cakes, biscuits, savory dinner breads as well as the muffins and nut breads. ENJOY!
